Truth is, that question has been around since the home was sold at auction back in 1929. Lots of folks have tried to find the answer, starting with the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, Franklin and Dixie Hibbs, Flaget Hospital, St. Joseph Parish, and finally Bethlehem High School. Some had a degree of success, but they all were eventually stymied by the tremendous costs, both initially and ongoing, to maintain a historical home such as Anatok. Much has been written and discussed about this process, but I’d like to share with our alumni and friends the process that got Bethlehem High School and Anatok named one of the top stories of the year by the Kentucky Standard. Almost three years ago, the School Board at Bethlehem was faced with a dilemma. A once proud but deteriorating building was in tremendous need of repair from a school whose mission and financial resources have nothing to do with historic preservation. Fully aware that this could be a difficult problem, I asked several civic-minded people with no ties to Bethlehem to work with me in trying to find a solution. These people brought experience in city government, community development, finance, real estate, religious history, and restoration construction to the conversation. We began work to answer a simple question. What is the best use of Anatok to benefit the educational mission of our school and at the same time maintaining a historical appreciation of the property? Two more committees, one lawsuit, and several thousand dollars later, Bethlehem seems to be coming to a conclusion with the Anatok question. able. The plan does not call for any borrowed money. On December 4, 2012, the Planning and Zoning Board approved a plan to convert Anatok into an outdoor classroom In January, a lawsuit and restraining order halted all progress on implementing our campus plan. Working with the court, a third Anatok committee was formed to try to raise enough money to restore Anatok and convert it into art and music classrooms. A goal of $500,000 was established as a starting point with an understanding that the actual renovation costs would likely be higher. A deadline was established to end fund raising on April 30. As part of the mediation agreement, the lawsuit was dropped and the restraining order was lifted to allow the deadline to be extended to May 31, 2013. After another statewide fundraising effort, the third Anatok committee fell far short of its goal. As of print time of this letter, the campus plan will begin with deconstruction of Anatok around July 15, 2013. I’ve been a school administrator for a long time and have had the pleasure of working with some of the best. Early in my career, I remember my boss at the time, Robert Smotherman, telling me that the problem with some school administrators and most well-meaning adults is that sometimes in education, decisions are based on what’s best for adults. He always reminded me, make decisions based on what’s best for kids! I’ve tried to remember that as we continue to work through this process. Bethlehem High School has been around for a phenomenal 194 years. The founding Sisters of Charity couldn’t have possibly seen where Bethlehem is today, but they have always had a vision to adapt to change. It reminds me of a quote I’ve kept on my desk since this process started. Former Secretary of State Dean Acheson and the Founding Sisters of Charity had the same philosophy: “If we learn the art of yielding what must be yielded to the changing present, we can save the best of the past.” What follows is a brief time line of our process: • • After a thorough evaluation of the building’s present condition and renovations, estimates from three local contractors, Bethlehem High School determined that they could not afford to renovate the building without some outside resources. In addition, a real estate analysis suggested the building did not have much worth in a private business setting. Unsuccessful efforts were made to find outside uses and sources of funding and after a yearlong search, the first Anatok committee voted to recommend to the School board to develop the property for immediate and long term use consistent with the education mission and financial constraints of our school. Essentially, we started over, but this time with a new question. What to do with the campus that would provide educational and growth opportunities for our students and maintain an appreciation and reverence to our historical campus. A new Anatok committee was formed, this time with new expertise in community planning, architectural experience, and local history in religion and community. The Anatok committee hired an architectural firm to help with planning. The architects were asked to present a plan consistent with our school mission, bolster campus identity, clarify traffic patterns, and maintain a strong appreciation of our Catholic heritage, the legacy of Daniel Rudd, and the building known as Anatok. After several meetings, the Anatok Committee approved a plan that they felt met those requirements. Anatok would be converted into an outdoor classroom using the original footprint. The rest of the building would be deconstructed with materials recycled to build a student area. The plan was developed in phases that allowed the project to be paid for as funding became avail 4 SPRING STAR SPRING STAR 5 LAVERN DOWNS LETCHER CLASS OF 1962 A D VA N C E M E N T P E R S P E C T I V E ALUMNI PARTICIPATION IN ANNUAL PHONATHON SETS RECORD AND BEGINS A TRADITION! CHRISTI MEDLEY, DIRECTOR OF ADVANCEMENT Dear Alumni and Friends, Bethlehem alumni ranging from the class of 1965 to the class of 2000 came together in March at the Alumni Phonathon to reconnect with their classmates. Our purpose was twofold: to reconnect and update contact information on our graduates and to request financial support for the operation of Bethlehem. Pictured above are members of the Senior Class who helped with the event. U.S.POSTAGE PAID LOUISVILLE, KY PERMIT #879 309 West Stephen Foster Avenue Bardstown, KY 40004-1445 A New Look Bethlehem High School stands alone in Kentucky in many ways - such as almost two centuries of continuous education and composite ACT scores approaching 25. The school is also the only one in the state with separate mascots for boys’ and girls’ teams, which harkens back to Bethlehem’s beginnings as an all-girl school. The girls have always been the Banshees, but since a Banshee is a mythical female being, the mascot wasn’t fitting for boys, who started attending Bethlehem in 1970. The boys retained the Eagle mascot from the prestigious St. Joseph Preparatory High School, which closed in 1968. The Banshees and Eagles make a good couple, but their mascot designs needed more consistency and cohesiveness. This year, Bethlehem has worked with Clay Pullen of Four Point Creative to create an Eagle and a Banshee with a contemporary look. Designing the Banshee was challenging. “She” not only had to match the Eagle, but she also had to be an “every-girl” figure. The new Banshee has a very ominous yet dignified look. Like the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, who started Bethlehem in 1819, the banshee exudes energy and spirt behind her hooded countenance. In addition to the new look for the Eagle and Banshee, Bethlehem has updated the star and seal to coordinate with our new over-all look. The star itself has not changed, it is now enclosed in a holding shape, which provides clarity. The seal further promotes the star and has added a new tag line, “Lighting the Way - Since 1819.” We hope you enjoy our new look, which includes the redesign of our magazine, the “Bethlehem Star.” These changes reflect our approach to educating our students in keeping with the times, the technology, and the dedication to always being at the forefront. 32 SPRING STAR
