SABAH, BRUNEI, SARAWAK A WONDERFUL ‘CLOSE TO HOME’ HOLIDAY OPPORTUNITY BORNEO 20 Days - 19 July to 8 August 2016 A SMALL GROUP TOUR NATURE at its BEST! CULTURE at its most EXOTIC! BORNEO A NATURAL PARADISE Borneo Rainforest BORNEO The third largest island in the world remains surprisingly unknown. Strategically placed at the heart of the maritime sea routes of south-east Asia, ports of eastern Borneo have been thriving trading centres between China and India for over a thousand years. The island is surrounded by Indonesia (Java, Sulawesi, Sumatra), just 28kms from the Phillipines, and less than a thousand kilometres from Singapore. Before the sea levels rose at the end of the last iceage, Borneo was part of mainland Asia. The deeper waters between Borneo and neighbouring Sulawesi stopped that land connection from continuing, creating the current divide between the Asian and Australian/PNG biological regions. Hence Borneo’s flora and fauna is more indicative of Asia than Australia/PNG. Muslims in the 14th century converted many indigenous peoples to Islam. The Sultanate of Brunei ruled a large part of northern Borneo during a golden age between the 15th and 17 centuries. In 1842 the Sultanate granted part of Sarawak to an English adventurer James Brooke who established a Kingdom, and a dynastic monarchy known as the White Rajahs who ruled Sarawak for 100 years. The British North Borneo Company controlled present day Sabah from 1882 to 1941. During the WW2 Japanese occupation, the Dayaks (mainly Iban) played a role in guerrilla warfare against the occupying forces, temporarily reviving their headhunting practice. 1 After the fall of Singapore, the Japanese sent several thousand Australian and British prisoners-of-war to camps in Borneo. At Sandakan only 6 of some 2,500 prisoners survived. In the 1960’s, Borneo also saw the main confrontations over territory between Malaysia and Indonesia which resulted in the British army being deployed against the Indonesians and communism. The island historically had extensive rainforest cover. It is over 140 million years old, one of the oldest in the world. Unfortunately half the global tropical timber acquisition comes from Borneo. Logging and palm oil plantations encroach on valuable primary forests. But the island is still the centre of many endemic species of both plants and animals - 15,000 species of flowering plants, 420 species of birds, 220 mammal species. The rainforests are one of the few remaining natural habitats for the endangered orangutan, and an important refuge for the Asian elephant, Sumatran rhinoceros, and clouded leopard. Borneo has some of the world’s best and most unique cave systems Clearwater Cave has one of the world’s longest underground rivers, and Deer cave is home to over three million bats. Iconic Mt Kinabalu in Sabah is the tallest mountain at 4,095 metres. Population of the island is just under 20 million, mostly living in coastal cities with a sprinkling of towns and villages along the rivers. On this tour we visit all the most significant national parks and population centres with unique attractions and experiences to offer. O/n Hilton Doubletree Hotel Incl meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner Monday 21 July KUALA LUMPUR TO KOTA KINABALU (SABAH) An early morning flight today to the beautiful capital of the state of Sabah, Kota Kinabalu. After check-in we are enlightened about Kota O/n Shangri-La Rasa Ria Resort Incl meals: Breakfast/Lunch/ Dinner Batu Caves Kinabalu’s history and heritage as we drive the scenic route to the Sabah Foundation (Tun Mustapha) building, a 30 story circular glass sculpture (122m tall),the tallest building in Sabah. Returning to the city along the coastal highway, Signal Hill provides a birds-eye view of the city (accessed by smaller vans), before we visit the historic Atkinson Clock Tower and Australia Place. We conclude our day at the Sabah Museum housing a wonderful overview of Sabah’s heritage. Tuesday 22 July KINABALU NATIONAL PARK Approximately a two hour drive today to the foothills of Mt Kinabalu, towering 1,500 metres above sea level. We’ll be able to savour seasonal local fruit at Pekan Nabalu market, visit the education centre and mountain garden at Kinabalu Park Headquarters. We’ll take a leisurely hour-long walk (an easy level of difficulty) along the cool trails to explore the montane forest. O/n Shangri-La Rasa Ria Resort Incl meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner Wednesday 23 July NORTH BORNEO STEAM RAILWAY An interesting and unique experience today as we journey three hours by vintage steam train through the towns of Kinarut and Papar, typical of train travel in the by-gone days of British colonial North Borneo in the early 1990’s. The British Vulcan steam locomotive hauls five Japanesedesigned carriages, meticulously restored and renovated to reflect the era of the steam train. The carriage interiors highlight the natural woods of Sabah and accommodate just 16 passengers per carriage. Windows remain open during the journey to enhance the heritage experience. We’ll experience a ‘tiffin’ lunch on board as we pass through villages and paddy fields. We have short excursion stops at Kinarut and Papar. O/n Shangri-La Rasa Ria Resort Incl meals: Breakfast/Lunch Jalan Alor Food Street KOTA KINABALU, BRUNEI Old growth greenery abounds in verdant Ulu Temburong National Park. Brunei is considered the fifth richest country in the world by GDP, and one of only two countries in the world with zero public debt. The oil wealth of this small islamic nation has allowed it to create a prosperous, strict, sociallycontrolled religious state where happiness is found in pious worship, adoration for its benevolent Sultan, and mass consumption. We arrive at its capital of Bandar Seri Begawan, population around 140,000. Thursday 24 July KOTA KINABALU TO SANDAKAN An early flight this morning takes us to the port of Sandakan (just 28 kms from the Philippines), the former capital of British North Borneo and second largest town in Sabah, on the north-east coast of Borneo. Timber and agricultural products are exported through the port. Sandakan timber was so special, it was used in the construction of Beijing’s famous Temple of Heaven. The town currently has many immigrants from the Mindanao Islands of the Philippines. We take lunch in an English tea house and tour the town visiting Sandakan’s central market, Sim-Sim water village, the Pu Ji Shih Buddhist temple with a panoramic view over Sandakan Bay, and the historic Agnes Keith House. Accommodation: O/n Four Points by Sheraton Incl meals: Breakfast/Lunch Friday 25 July SEPILOK NATURE RESERVE This morning we walk through the rainforest to witness the feeding of the orang utans, before watching a video on these amazing animals and their rehabilitation back into the wild. In the afternoon we visit the Rainforest Discovery Centre, admire the beautiful native flora species of their botanical gardens, and get a birds-eye view from a 350 metre long canopy walk. Twenty five metres above the ground, this sturdy structure is the first of its kind in the country. Our last visit today is to the beautifully landscaped and moving Sandakan Brunei Empire Hotel Memorial Park, commemorating a 1945 WW2 tragedy. During occupation, the Japanese established a POW camp here, the scene of the infamous Death Marches. Approximately 2,400 Australian and British soldiers lost their lives as a result, within sight of victory by the Allies in the Pacific War. Dinner tonight is at the Ocean King seafood restaurant. O/n Four Points by Sheraton Incl meals: Breakfast/Dinner Saturday 26 July SANDAKAN TO BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (BRUNEI) Our flight today takes us into the small neighbouring sultanate of Brunei, sitting between Sabah and Sarawak. This tranquil corner of Borneo has splendid rainforests and the largest oil and natural gas fields in south-east Asia. Our accommodation is at the quite famous Empire Hotel & Country Club, Brunei’s only beach hotel. It is grand, spacious, state-of-theart luxury, evoking an opulent and tranquil ambience. Over its six year construction it employed over 300 highly skilled designers, technicians and craftsmen. It is recognised as one of the finest golf and spa resorts in the Asia-Pacific, boasting an 18 hole golf course, 160 hectares of lush tropical gardens, a palatial hotel lobby, multiple restaurants, shopping arcade and lagoon pools. Dinner tonight in a waterfront restaurant. O/n Empire Hotel & Country Club Incl meals: Breakfast/Dinner Sunday 27 July BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN Today is a day to visit the best of the unique attractions in the nations capital. We start by visiting the local market, before proceeding to the Brunei museum which focuses on the nation’s Islamic history, natural history and the oil industry. We’ll visit one of the world’s most beautiful mosques, the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque. A wonderful place of peace in the city centre, it features a huge golden dome and an interior of cool Italian marble. We photo stop at the entrance of the world’s largest residential palace - the residence of His Majesty The Sultan of Brunei. After a local lunch we continue to the Royal Regalia exhibition which showcases the coronation chariots, ceremonial armoury, traditional jewellery, and coronation crowns. Finally this afternoon we proceed to the world’s largest water village, Kampong Ayer. Ten percent of the country’s population (almost 40,000 5 Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque BRUNEI, TEMBURONG,MIRI the Resort Cinema. O/n Ulu Ulu National Park Resort Incl meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner residents) live in this huge water village on stilts stretching for 8 kms along the Brunei River.People have lived in Kampong Ayer for over 1300 years. When Ferdinand Magellan’s fleet visited in 1521, it was dubbed a ‘Venice of the East’. From a distance it appears like a slum, but in order to preserve the nation’s river dwelling heritage and origins, it has been provided with 36 kms of boardwalks, concrete jetties, piped water & plumbing, electricity & telephones, internet access, schools, mosques, clinics, police station, and a marine fire station. Many residents keep pot plants, pets and chickens, and use private water taxis to get around. We’ll visit a water village home and family to have refreshments there. Finally we take time in a shopping complex, before transferring back to the Empire. At night we’ll enjoy a sunset tour to photograph the mosques at night. O/n Empire Hotel & Country Club Incl meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner Monday 28 July BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN TO TEMBURONG A really interesting transit today from the capital, for a mildly adventurous immersion into Brunei’s best preserved wilderness rainforests in Ulu Temburong National Park. After lunch at a local restaurant, we transfer by speedboat through a network of waterways to Bangar Town where we visit the local market before proceeding to Batang Duri, the base for Brunei’s Outward Bound School. This is the embarkation point for the Temurai longboats which carry visitors Tuesday 29 July TEMBURONG TO MIRI Early (4.30am) wake-up call this morning for those who choose to enjoy the sunrise from the forest canopy tower before returning to the resort for breakfast. Proboscis Monkey up the Temburong River. They are steered by Iban men and women who, with remarkable ability, manage to avoid the sand bars, boulders and submerged logs. The narrow river winds through rapids and thick tropical rainforest providing cover for palms, ferns, ginger plants, durian and other fruiting trees. Birds and over 400 species of butterflies abound. Some of the butterflies are quite rare. We proceed to the Ulu Ulu Resort in the Temburong National Park by longboat. When water levels are low you will be expected to climb out and help push the boats to deeper water! Watch for proboscis monkeys and other wildlife. Keep your eyes open for cute squirrels, macaques and colourful hornbills. After dinner tonight we have a night walk (BYO torch) followed by a movie in The walk crosses a suspension bridge and is significantly uphill with many steps, but its all worth it for the amazing view from the top. The canopy walk itself is not very long, but you have the feeling that you are on top of the world, overlooking the highest of the tree canopy. After breakfast back at the resort, those who wish will be able to proceed further up the river by longboat to Sg Apan and trek to a beautiful waterfall for a swim and perhaps an optional tubing experience. Those who wish can spend the morning at leisure at the resort. After lunch back, we depart by longboat, vehicle and speed boat back to Bandar Seri Begawan. From here we travel by coach across the border from Brunei to the second largest town in Sarawak, the famous oil centre of Miri. O/n Marriott Resort & Spa Incl meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner Wednesday 30 July MIRI AND THE IBAN PEOPLE Today will be a relaxed day with time to explore Miri and the Resort. Miri is regarded as Sarawak’s most cosmopolitan centre (population of 300,000) comprised of almost the entire spectrum of Sarawak’s many ethnic groups. A low ridge just out of town was the site of Malaysia’s first oil well, the Grand Old Lady, drilled in 1910 by Shell. Appropriately, the old derrick stands right outside the Petroleum Museum whose interactive exhibits provide a great introduction to the hugely lucrative industry that has so enriched Miri. The hill itself offers views across town to the South China Sea. In town is the largest Taoist temple in south-east Asia and several very impressive public Forest Canopy Walk MIRI, MULU parks and gardens for which Miri is well known. There are several good shopping malls and plazas, including the Heritage Centre where craftsmen work at making the best souvenirs. We take a look at the bustling farmers market selling fresh foodstuffs brought in by local natives, before visiting the Heritage Centre and Old China Town. Late afternoon we take a scenic countryside drive through palm plantations and pepper farms to visit a traditional Iban longhouse where we’ll be able to experience the culture and way of life of these once feared headhunters. We will be able to sample some local rice wine as we have a local dinner there. O/n Marriott Resort & Spa Incl meals: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner Thursday 31 July MIRI TO MULU Morning flight today to Mulu and another Marriott Resort & Spa. It has an ethnic design resembling longhouses, resting on 5m wooded stilts over lush vegetation, linked by walkways. There’s a swimming pool, riverside bar, al-fresco dining, a new spa and gym. Mulu National Park, dominated by majestic Gunung Mulu (2,376m), is a paradise for naturalists but it rains often and humidity is high. It is supremely important for its high bio-diversity and its karst features. Ever since the 1930’s, the rich rainforest has attracted scientists. Every scientific expedition seems to discover something new - a plant or animal species previously unknown day - exhilarating, strenuous and adventurous. This UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the most majestic and thrilling nature destinations anywhere in south-east Asia. It encompasses caves and karst formations in a mountainous equatorial rainforest setting. The stars of the Park are the four show caves, Wind Cave, Clearwater Cave, Lang Cave and Deer Cave. We depart by longboat to explore Wind Cave with a short stopover at a Penan Longhouse. Mulu National Park to man, or animal behaviour patterns, etc. Mulu’s major claim to fame is its 295 kms of spectacular limestone caves, including the world’s largest cave passage (the Deer Cave), the world’s largest natural rock chamber (the Sarawak Chamber), and Clearwater Cave, the longest cave system in south-east Asia. There is also the possibility of sighting some of the unique fauna - including eight different species of hornbill, the bearded pig, a moonrat, shrews, the long-tailed macaque, gibbons, three species of deer, the small Malaysian sun bear, etc. O/n Royal Mulu Resort Incl meals: Breakfast/Dinner Friday 1 August GUNUNG MULU WORLD HERITAGE AREA Today will be an outstanding Wind Cave has several chambers including the cathedral-like Kings Chamber, with many impressive stalactites, stalagmites, flowrocks and rock corals, some of which are illuminated in the Kings Chamber. The longhouse we visit on the way, is home to Penan people, some of the last remaining semi-nomadic people of Malaysia. Their semi-modern longhouses, provided by the government, can house up to 100 people in just one long house. The men farm, fish and hunt, while the women care for the family and produce handicrafts. Traditional handicrafts include woven bracelets, beaded jewellery, musical instruments, mock blow-pipes, woven mats etc. fter Wind Cave we’ll continue by longboat to Clearwater Cave. Approx 200 steps lead up through the forest to the gigantic mouth of the cave. Clearwater is jaw-dropping. This is the 8th largest cave in the world, the largest in the world by volume, containing the longest underground river in south-east Asia (180 kms), which gives the cave its name. Its a fascinating cave to stroll around, with huge underground river caverns walkways and small floating bridges make this a relatively easy and enjoyable experience. We return to a crystal-clear pool at the base of the steps, filled by water that flows from the cave, for a picnic lunch. If we’re lucky we’ll see swarms of beautiful butterflies. We then longboat down river to the Park HQ and take a 3 km boardwalk to explore Lang’s and Deer Caves. Lang’s Cave is the smallest of the four show 7 Gunung Mulu World Heritage Area MULU, KUCHING, SANTUBONG era of the White Rajahs to the present day. caves, draped with living calcite and fantasy stalactites. Deer Cave, one of the largest single cave passages in the world, is 1,000m wide and 120m high. It has a 60m high ‘shower’ continuously falling from the roof near the ‘Garden of Eden’, just one of the spectacular views within the cave. Among these attractions is the world renowned Sarawak Museum and the legacy of the Brooke’s (White Rajah) reign. Sarawak’s early history is unique because it was ruled not by a foreign empire but by a family, the Brooke family, from 1841 to 1941. During the Brookes reign, many notable heritage buildings emerged, among them the Bishops House, old State Mosque, Government House and the St Thomas Cathedral. We proceed to the Bats Theatre hoping to see the black river of four million wrinkle-lipped bats pour out in a spectacular exodus on their nightly forage for insects, before returning to our resort accommodation. O/n Royal Mulu Resort Incl meals: Breakfast/Lunch Saturday 2 August MULU TO KUCHING Our flight today takes us to the stylish and sophisticated capital of Sarawak, Kuching, which brings together a kaleidoscope of cultures, crafts and cuisines. This afternoon after checkin we’ll take an orientation walking tour. Kuching’s bustling streets reward those with a penchant for ambling, some very modern architecture and some with an old colonial vibe. The broad waterfront promenade development is the city’s most popular meeting place, and has won wide acclaim, winning awards from international architecture and landscaping institutes. The waterfront has numerous facilities for live entertainment, cafes, restored old buildings (including the Square Tower), cultural enjoyment and arts appreciation. Behind the waterfront are the primary bazaar and everything from antique shops to clock towers. Hornbill Its a city of grace and subtlety, safe and clean with numerous surprising tourist attractions. O/n Pullman Hotel Incl meals: Breakfast/Dinner Sunday 3 August KUCHING This morning provides the opportunity to observe one of Borneo’s most famous icons - the orang utan, or ‘man of the forest’, only found in Borneo and Sumatra. We visit the Semenggoh Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre for orphan orang utans. Other animals are also kept at the centre. The primary objective of the centre is, of course, to return these animals back to their natural habitat. After lunch we commence our tour of the city highlights. We’ll experience the beauty of a multi-racial community and see attractions that take us from the The reign of the White Rajah ended with the invasion of the Japanese forces, but it is arguably the Brooke legacy that gave Kuching its current charm. Kuching is also ‘Cat City’! The city centre is dominated by a gigantic cat statue, and one of the unique attractions that we visit is the world’s only cat museum. O/n Pullman Hotel Incl meals: Breakfast/Lunch Monday 4 August BAKO NATIONAL PARK Departure this morning by coach and boat to the Bako National Park, the oldest gazetted national park in Sarawak offering a great introduction to Sarawak’s flora and fauna. The forests are home to many varied eco-systems. Wildlife that thrives in these forests include the famous longnosed pot-bellied proboscis monkey (only found in Borneo), the most attractive flower-&-fruit-eating silverleaf monkey, the flying lemur, longtailed macaques, mouse deer, palm civet cats, etc, etc. All these native fauna are in their natural wild habitat, hence exactly what we see cannot be guaranteed but we will be in their back yard with a specialist guide to assist!! O/n Pullman Hotel Incl meals: Breakfast/Lunch Tuesday 5 August KUCHING TO SANTUBONG This morning we transfer to the Damai Beach Resort, just a 45 minute drive from Kuching. Our resort accommodation is majestically nestled within the world’s oldest tropical rainforest with a private sandy beach and an array of interesting activities. Kuching RAINFOREST MUSIC FESTIVAL But the purpose for being here is to enjoy the totally unique Rainforest World Music Festival, where we (and thousands of others) spend the rest of the day. The festival features musicians from around the world showcasing their traditional musical instruments. Sarawak is renowned for its traditional musical instrument called the ‘sape’ which has been transformed into an icon of this festival. This unique world event is part of Sarawak’s efforts to conserve and preserve the natural environment through music. It was voted one of the top 25 music festivals in the world, brings together renowned musicians from all continents and indigenous musicians from the interior of mythical Borneo. From local native chants and African dance, to American folk music and percussion troupes, the festival blends culture and music. The Sarawak Cultural Village is the festival venue, in a setting between the South China Sea and the rainforests of Mount Santubong. In the Cultural Village itself, a circular boardwalk winds between wooden houses built in the style of local indigenous groups. On both days we are present, the festival operates during the afternoon with cultural displays, demonstrations, and really interesting musical workshops. Unlike typical music festivals, you can attend free workshops set in longhouses to enjoy educational jam sessions with the performers. You get to know the performers, their instruments and their cultural traditions. We’re likely to see the stars at any time walking around simply enjoying the festival. Everyone takes a break in the late afternoon before the evening band performances start at sunset. Two stages keep the evening action going without intermission, as bands change over. A wide variety of food, snacks and drinks are sold within the festival. O/n Pullman Hotel Incl meals: Breakfast Wednesday 6 August RAINFOREST WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL Today is the final day to again attend the festival or just relax amongst the beautiful surroundings.
