Many thanks to all who attended the Halloween Mixer on October 24. It was a wonderful mix of people from RPTC, RB Community Tennis Club and players from all around San Diego. The tennis was fun— the food was delicious! And it was great to make some new friends. Special thanks to Tracey Austin and John McEnroe for their appearance. I heard they provided a bit of commentary on their courts! Thanks to the Castleberrys and the Shermans for coordinating this great event! 3 Lob Letter November 2014 Two Smash & Grabs Last Week Two cars were hit at the park this week, in broad daylight – windows shattered and purses stolen. The landscape maintenance committee is planning a Club Care Day for Saturday, January 17th. Volunteers needed! Women’s A-Level League Fall Report With three teams fielded in both the Competitor’s and Leah’s leagues, RPTC A team members played a lot of tennis this fall! Thanks to our Competitor captains: Christine Bristol, Alison Hout and Pete Sievers, who are leading their teams through a long (injury plagued) season. They greatly appreciated the help of our BB subs! Leah’s League, though a shorter season, was challenging for our teams as they were all in the same flight and played against each other. The cooperation of our captains: Norma Garrison, Kathy Gallo and Susan Dere, set the right tone for our sister teams. Thanks to each of you for captaining! Sign ups for Winter League are underway. If you haven’t received the sign up email, please let me know at [email protected] and I’ll get your email address corrected (Also, see the following page). Please consider captaining a team this winter! Having new captains does a lot for the teams and the club. It gives our “regular” captains a well-deserved break; gives you a chance to get to know the members at RPTC better; and captaining gives you a better appreciation of what the job entails. Also, if you do not have a partner and are looking for one, let me know. I am willing to help you set up some social matches. Patti Sherman A-Level League Coordinator 5 Lob Letter November 2014 RPTC WOMEN WINTER LEAGUES SIGN UP RPTC is taking sign-ups for NCDTL and NCI. Note: If you are not sure that you will be available regularly, please either sign up as a SUB or let us know what you expect your availability to be so incoming new captains have this information when they draft teams. (This might include planned extended vacations, surgery, work, child care restrictions or other obligations) If you can only play in the 9:00 slot, sign up as a sub. Teams are fielded according to RPTC’s Policy for Fielding Teams, which can be found under Standing Rules on the website. The Captains Committee (the outgoing Fall Captains), will meet next month to rate players, appoint new captains and address player requests. After that, the new winter captains will draft the winter teams. If you have an item you would like discussed at the next Captains Meeting, please let your captain or the League Coordinators know. Captain’s Request: Once you have signed up, please don’t ask to be removed from a roster in order to play at another club. Make sure of your plans before signing up. ** Because our membership is growing rapidly, we cannot always guarantee placement in both leagues at the same time. If you are requesting to play in more than one league, please list your first and second choice. (If it looks like space is limited, we will notify you early in the process). If you are interested in playing league at RPTC this winter please respond directly to this address: [email protected] with the following information no later than Sunday, November 9th. Your Name Your phone numbers (only if changed recently) What level are you requesting? (AA, A, BB, B, CC) (ratings are determined by Committee) Which league are you signing up for? (NCDTL OR NCI) Which league is your first choice? (If signing up for both leagues) Partner’s name (if you have one—not required) Are you willing to captain a team? Are you available to “sub up” if needed? WE MUST HEAR DIRECTLY FROM EACH PLAYER WHO WISHES TO PLAY—EVEN IF YOUR PARTNER HAS ALL READY SIGNED UP. 6 Lob Letter November 2014 Men’s Winter League Sign-ups It's already that time -- time to start preparing for the upcoming 2015 North County Doubles Tennis League—Mens Division. A few reminders... This league is not a USTA league and you do not need to be a USTA member to play. You do need to be a member of RPTC. RPTC typically fields teams at the A (4.5), BB (4.0), and B (3.5) levels. On occasion there are not enough clubs in the area able to field "B" teams to warrant a "B" league. If this happens we will strive to place some 3.5 players on our BB teams if we have available slots. Normally, each league match features 6 doubles matches on Sunday mornings -- three at 9:00am followed by three more at 10:15ish. This year, the NCDTL Administrator is considering reducing the number of lines from 6 to 4. If this happens, it may impact how many players we can put on each roster. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more. League play usually starts in early-mid January and runs for 2-3 months depending on how many teams are in the a division. If you are interested in playing on one of our NCDTL teams this season....Send an email to Men’s League Coordinator, Dan Scherer at [email protected] Include your USTA rating (for placement on a team), your preferred email address, and your cell phone number. Please respond no later than 11/10/14. · Dan will then compile the sign-ups and work with the captains to determine the team rosters. Dan will communicate the rosters to you sometime in late November or early December. Also, please let Dan know if you are interested in being a captain. 7 Lob Letter November 2014 RPTC TENNIS TIP “Five Basic Forehand Footwork Techniques” Lesson Six – The “Run Around” Forehand By: Coach Sam Langley The “Run Around” Forehand footwork technique is moving around the backhand to take a forehand. Moving around the backhand offers many advantages when executed properly, but can be a costly maneuver when used inappropriately. Roger Federer is one of the best at this and has been touted many times by his peers as being his most effective weapon. The shot can turn a point around, from defense to offence as well as deliver the final blow, resulting in a jaw dropping, lightning bolt aimed with surgical precision. When attempted at an inopportune occasion or when poorly directed, impedes one’s ability to cover the court left vacant by positioning toward the backhand side of the court. Thus, anticipation, timing & execution are paramount to its effectiveness. One of the main benefits is, the ability to aggressively hit to either side of the court with a spin effect that curves the ball toward the outside or wider. The terms are “outside in” and “inside out” which essentially signifies which side of the ball was struck and its direction. Hitting as such imparts critical spin to assist in control, pace and the devastating angle created by curving the ball. Also it should be noted, when your opponent realizes you’ve moved around your backhand to take a forehand, they must shift their position more toward the center of the court protect against the angle and type of spin created. I have prepared a short video demonstrating a few “Run Around” Forehands as it’s easier to see than describe. Have a look! The “Run Around” Forehand Footwork Technique - Lesson Six – Video can be found here: The “Run Around” Forehand Footwork This concludes the series of “Five Basic Forehand Footwork Techniques”. I hope you found the tips and examples beneficial and useful to your own play. There are more Forehand footwork techniques than the five basic I presented but these will greatly improve your ability to arrive, execute and recover from your forehand shots. Try them it out and enjoy the journey to improvement. Have fun, see you on the courts! Coach Sam 8 Lob Letter November 2014 Ask the Ump! Q. Dear Ump, Fault, Let or Point?? Submit your Ask the Ump questions to [email protected] then look for the reply in upcoming LobLetters During a match my opponent hit a let second serve that bounced high off the net, I reflexively caught the ball in the air while standing well behind the base line. My opponent claimed the ball should be replayed as a first serve because I caught the ball before it was out of play. I countered that it should be a double fault because I caught it behind the baseline. Were either of us correct? MP A. Dear MP this was not a double fault because you caught the ball and prevented it from landing out. But your actions in no way warranted a replay of the entire point. So your opponent did not deserve a first serve either. The ball was a let and a second serve was in order. Rules of Tennis 22A. The Ump. 9 Lob Letter November 2014 UNUSED RESERVATIONS POLICY – PLEASE READ There have been reports by members and staff of reserved courts going unused. Failure to call and cancel a reservation in a timely manner is monitored and the member will be called by staff. Failure to cancel reservations in a timely manner, of unused courts more than two times in a 30 day period will result in a one-week suspension of reservation privileges. Repeated offenses will be subject to suspension of membership at the direction of the Board of Directors. Please be considerate of your fellow-members and cancel your courts online or by phone as soon as you know you won’t be playing after all. This is each member’s responsibility. Our squeegees are in need of 6 roller replacements! RPTC is now a NonProfit 501(c)3 organization, which means all donations are tax deductible.
