The River Heritage Museum, a Save America's Treasures project, is housed in downtown's oldest standing structure. State-of-the-art, interactive exhibits highlight the history and habitats of the fourrivers region encompassing the Ohio, Te n n e s s e e , Cumberland and Mississippi rivers. Paducah, the only major city in the Commonwealth of Kentucky with an American Indian name. When General William Clark platted a town at the northernmost point The focal point of Paducah's abundant architectural treasures, the 1905 Market House tells the story of a town that has survived tremendous challenges, including the Battle of Paducah during the Civil War and the disastrous 1937 flood. Located in the center of the Market House, the William Clark Market House Museum provides a glimpse of Paducah's rich heritage and colorful past. The meticulously reconstructed century-old interior of the List Drug Store is its most imposing exhibit. The variety of the houses of worship is evidence of one of the many freedoms Americans share. Downtown, Lower Town, Upper Town and Mid Town African-Americans carved out their own communities where they owned their own homes, stores and businesses, went to school and church and socialized. Although these neighborhoods were scattered throughout the community, the majority of the black-owned businesses were in Upper Town.
