Volume 165 June 2010 Get Your Poker Run Hands Now! The Poker Run featuring the music of “Second Nature” on Saturday, June 5th, 2010 See inside for more details and Sponsors... FROM THE BOW... by Loraine Vienne, General Manager Dear Members, Recently, we have experienced, as have several other Marinas, a rash of breakins in our Marina. I want each of you to know that we are working with the Cornelius and Mecklenburg Police Departments to invetigate all possible measures of action for additioanl security. I appreciate all the calls, input and reccomendations. We have been exploring various feasable options with the police department, owners and management. We will be posting signs on the gates and on the end of the “T”s indicating that we are on the patrol watch of both police departments. We have been put on a zone check by the police department, our security officers have been notified and the police officers will be installing a deer camera (motion activated) to take pictures. Harry and his staff have been keeping a closer eye on the gates and when they find or hear they’re not working - they are trying to get them fixed as soon as possible. Please notify me in the front office if you are having specific issues with your gate. We held our 2nd Annual Marina/Boating Safety Day this past Saturday in which many members had the opportunity to speak with local officials. If you find you have had an unauthorized boarding on your boat it is most important that you report it to the Police Department, even if nothing is taken. We are also exploring the future action of limiting service vendors here at the Marina and instituting a policy that all detailors and venders may only be hired and let onto the docks by our marina staff to eliminate the dock codes being given out freely to the many service vendors, who freely frequent our marina, hired by Members. Please feel free to call my office with additional concerns or suggestions. I look forward to seeing you at the club! She began as a server and bartender working her way through college at University of North Carolina at Wilmington where she enjoyed the fast pace of the industry and the seasons on the coast of North Carolina. After moving to Charlotte in 2006, she completed her Bachelors degree at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte majoring in Communications and Public Relations. She interned and then was brought on full-time as an Event Coordinator and Manager for a production company in Charlotte called Extravaganza. Her clients loved her attention to detail, hard work ethic and positive attitude. She has been a staff member at The Peninsula Yacht Club since April 2010 and looks forward to an active summer on the lake and getting to know all the members and families. As a native (18 years) of Colorado, she enjoys the outdoors and traveling. Time allowing, she participates in area charity runs and volunteers for non-profit activities. a column by Alex Rooker As this Newsletter makes it to your in-box, the June 5th Poker Run will be upon us. Unless there is lightening in the sky, I heartedly suggest “doing” the event- even if it rains. Some years ago my sailboat family joined friends on their power boat and proceeded even though it was a relatively cold, gray, overcast morning spitting rain. We all had rain gear and relished the event because it was more than a boat ride, it was an adventure. To enjoy the on-water part of the event, small craft work ( or have a friend with one!). For example, Poker Run 2006 my wife, Diann, and mother, Vivian, joined me on a Sea Doo GTX. Off we blasted, from the club, in search of more adventure. We immediately found the first installment- a floating beer can on the lake. I stopped the Sea Doo --and in attempting to retrieve the trash, we turned the Sea Doo over. As it is often said, “no good deed goes unpunished”. Thank goodness we were able to air-dry going to the various pick up points. My Mom, now 82 years old, still talks about that Poker Run above all the others she has attended. This year, folks can obtain poker hands at the club. So you can join the fun without a personal “adventure”. We conclude the day with a band and a dinner beginning early evening. BEACH MUSIC CONCERT - FRIDAY JULY 2ND - Huntersville Ford is sponsoring the Craig Woolard Band to kick off our Independence Celebration. www.craigwoolard. com opens with a sample of what we will enjoy. Buffet starts the evening at 6:00 pm with the band beginning to play at 7:00 pm. Enjoy the whole weekend: make use of the pool, take out a kayak, sail a lazer, take out your own boat- then shower and change clothes at the club and stay for the evening sunset while enjoying the food and service. Years ago a close friend used to remark, as we were vacationing together, “who has more fun than we do”. That could well become a motto for PYC members.
