366 A beautiful Geo. III Sterling
Silver Wine Cooler
Depicting scenes of half naked women
from the Island of Lesbos or Lemnos,
where a race of women killed their
menfolk and loved drinking wine.
Made by a London Silversmith, William
Hall 1803. One side of the wine cooler
has the Arms and Garter of Earl
Lonsdale with five rings.
The height of the cup is 25.5cms. The
width from handle to handle is 28cms.
The total weight is 3122gms, including
the inner silver sleeve, but note, William
Hall’s hallmarks are only on the main wine
cooler body and the top rim. At some
stage, perhaps years later, the original
vendor inserted a solid silver sleeve to
separate the ice from touching the bottle.
This silver ring weighs 582gms, has
no hallmarks upon it but it is silver.
Provenance: Bought by a New Zealand
vendor in 1985 at the London Silver
Vault, Chancery Lane for £5250.00
from H. Perovetz Ltd.
