April 2011 - Placencia Breeze
Question: What’s the best place to live in Belize? For answer see page 4 “Taste of Placencia” fuels funding needs for local volunteer fire department! fire dancing lesson with Stephanie. The nearly 60 incredible raffle prizes awarded throughout the evening kept everyone’s rapt attention. The quality and diversity of prizes donated by our exceptionally generous vendors served to garner interest in the event well ahead of time. The Tipsy Tuna Seaside Bar on the beach provided the perfect venue, and many thanks go to Salva and Gillian Zabaneh for donating their time and location for the 2nd year in a row. Amy Faux joined in the fun with her fire dancing poses at the fundraiser for the Placencia Volunteer Fire Department April 1st. More photos page 4. Photo by Muzamanzie Photographs On Friday, April 1st, the Peninsula Volunteer Fire Department lit up the night with the 4th Annual Flaming Heart Ball at the Tipsy Tuna Seaside Bar. PVFD’s signature fundraiser, this year’s event, “A Taste of the Peninsula” boasted record breaking attendance and widespread community support. The crowd’s taste buds were fired up with 30 exquisite dishes, all donated by the finest chefs and cooks on the Peninsula including Chef Calbert Gardiner who barbecued juicy chicken and pork onsite. Performing selections smoking with references to FIRE, Gram Berrie provided a red hot performance throughout the evening. Professional fire dance artist, Stephanie Wandke mesmerized attendees with a literally blazing fire dance, and entertained diners throughout the evening as a very spirited Mistress of Ceremonies. A few adventurous souls stepped up for a As they have each year, Bowen and Bowen’s printing department produced and donated the artistic roadside banners. Photo by Muzamanzie Photographs Consultant’s report turns thumbs down on cruise tourism in southern Belize Cruise ships in Placencia: it was one of the most controversial issues ever to hit the peninsula. Now, the issue has been put to rest as a report by an independent consultant hired by the Belize Tourism Board has strongly recommended that the development of a cruise port in the village would be nothing short of a disaster. The report, written by Rich Wilson of Seatone Consultants of San Francisco, California, was commissioned following a public outcry over plans by a U.S. based developer to create a “tourism village” on the southern tip of the peninsula. That privately owned area would serve as the point of arrival for tenders running from cruise ships operated by Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines anchored in the channel several miles offshore. The issue was complicated by strong evidence of conflict of interest on the part of the CEO in the Ministry of Tourism who promoted the project with Royal Caribbean while at the same time having his real estate firm broker the land purchases for the cruise port’s developer. Faced with significant resistance to the plan, the BTB hired Wilson to determine how Placencians as well as residents of other southern areas felt about cruise tourism. The consultant conducted dozens of interviews and led public consultations in Placencia, Dangriga and Punta Gorda. His findings, released in March, were unequivocal: (Cont’d pg 2) The Placencia Breeze –April 2011- Page 2 Expanded cruise tourism nixed So, where do we go from here? By Stewart Krohn While the cruise issue may be behind us, the resulting cleavage the controversy opened is very much with us. In fact it could be argued that the debate over cruise ships in Placencia was not about cruise ships at all. What was it about? Depending on who you talk to, a lot of things: “locals” versus “foreigners” (or even “local locals” versus “foreign locals”), rich and poor, black and white, PUP and UDP, with a few “old beefs” thrown in for good measure. What all these issues have in common is the question of how our community confronts the concept of change. The challenge is not whether or not the Placencia Peninsula changes or doesn’t change; it changes almost daily before our eyes. What we need to deal with is how we channel that change and influence it to work to our benefit and not our detriment. The Placencia BTIA has launched an initiative to promote a consensual vision and plan a better future for area residents. It’s called Peninsula 2020 and is guided by a steering committee comprised of a broad cross section of representative organizations and individuals. With assistance from the World Wildlife Fund the committee has hired a team of local consultants—Mark Usher and John Flowers-- who will shortly begin their work of interviews, consultations and meetings with focus groups. We ask the public to cooperate by speaking openly and frankly in any such encounters and remember that the product that results from these efforts—a broad statement of how we would like the peninsula to develop—will only be as good as the effort we put in. Placencia mourns loss of dedicated mother and community member It should never be said that in true times of need, when straits could not be more dire that the Placencia community and its friends do not band together in solidarity. This has been the case in the community’s reaction to the tragic auto accident on Sunday April 3 that took the life of one of our young mothers, Ionie Westby, and left four young girls in very serious condition. While immediate family rushed to the sides of the stricken, a network of support quickly spread out. St. John’s Memorial School, where three of the girls are students, organized a candlelight walk throughout the village the evening after the crash, handing out little purple ribbons to honor those affected by the accident, as well as a gathering at Ms. Ionie’s home the following evening for a sing along. Word went out that the girls were in need of blood and immediately transportation was organized to carry several willing donors to the nearest blood banks. Use of social networking like Facebook helped keep friends and family near and far updated on the immediate needs and condition of the children as well as their caregivers. This especially helped to ease the pain of those that were far away feeling helpless and grieving. When the school sent out word that they were organizing a fundraiser for the children, some area restaurants jumped on board pledging to donate a portion of proceeds from their business day to the fund. Again the use of social media saw a similar pledge from an establishment in Caye Caulker and the ball just kept rolling. The girls; Ayana & Aliyah Hernandez, Ariel Westby, and Erica Cal presently remain at the Karl Huesner Memorial Hospital in Belize City where they are Evidence on all counts says expanded cruise tourism a bad idea for Placencia Peninsula Continued from pg 1 “ Based on the set of ideas, concerns and viewpoints during the public consultation, the central recommendation of this report is that the government of Belize should not approve a new port of call, contract or agreement with cruise lines, developers or their affiliates for operations in the Placencia Peninsula. Not only is there widespread resistance to the establishment of cruise tourism in Placencia, as demonstrated by public sentiment, there is also abundant and compelling evidence that communities in the surrounding area are ill prepared for cruise ship arrivals.” Ionie Westby June 9, 1979 – April 3, 2011 receiving treatment for their injuries. And while we’ve rallied together to help when and where we can, it is with a heavy heart that we are faced with the realization that Placencia has lost 31 year old Ionie Westby. A mother, daughter, sister, aunt and a friend, Ionie played an active role with the school. She could be seen early in the morning and most evenings training the students in softball, the sport that had been her passion growing up. She was known to accompany all field trip and school excursions. One parent sadly stated, “She would always drive along with the busses in her own ride when we went on trips. When it was time to pick up food or if a child was sick and needed something Ionie was always willing to go get it.” Her spirit for life and the love of her children will always be remembered. “…Expansion of cruise tourism to fragile areas such as the Placencia Peninsula is therefore highly problematic, risky and may result in irreversible negative impacts to the existing tourism sector, the ridge to reef resources of the south, and the safety and security of local communities.” At a follow up public consultation held on March 21st the new CEO in the Ministry of Tourism confirmed that his ministry would endorse the report and recommend that Cabinet should follow its conclusions. The full report is available at http:// www.placencia.com/BELIZE%20CRUISE% 20VIABILITY%20REPORT_2011.pdf Ionie is survived by her common-lawhusband Normandy Hernandez Sr; children Normandy Jr. ; Ayana, & Aliyah, mother Gail Westby; brothers Martin, Erwin,& Charles; sisters Abigail & Stephanie Westby, several nephews and nieces, including Ariel, aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends. She was predeceased by her father Charles & brother Carl. She will be missed by all who knew her. The Placencia Breeze April 2011- Page 3 What’s Happening In Town?! The program titled “Garden to Table” will for the first time formally organize the relationship between the hospitality and food sectors and farmers in Belize. With a specific focus on high quality USDA certified organic produce; the program expects to meet visitor demands for freshly grown local ingredients while contributing towards the economic development of local communities. Under the OAS funded Sustainable Livelihoods project, currently being executed by Ya’axche Conservation Trust, Indigenous communities in the south are already producing, organic fruits, vegetables, and naturally produced honey and preservatives. Farmers in Toledo are currently sharing lessons learned with farmers from Hopkins where the next phase of the Garden to Table program has already begun. For the BTB, this is yet another way of ensuring that the benefits of tourism accrue to as many people in Belize as possible. The guy has three advanced degrees. He is better at math than you are. What started out as Sal making a few algebra videos for his cousins has grown to over 2,100 videos and 100 selfpaced exercises and assessments covering everything from 1+1 to college level calculus, to physics, finance, and history. The mission of Khan Academy is to deliver world class education to anyone, anywhere. “The Khan Academy's materials and resources are available completely free of charge. All of the site's resources are available whether you are a student, teacher, home-schooler, principal, adult returning to the classroom after 20 years, or a friendly alien just trying to get a leg up in earthly biology. You’ll need a laptop and access to the internet. That’s it. Students can make use of Khan Academy’s extensive video library, practice exercises, and assessments from any computer with access to the web. Each video is a digestible chunk, approximately 10 minutes long, and especially purposed for viewing on the computer. "I teach the way that I wish I was taught. The lectures are coming from me, an actual human being who is fascinated by the world around him,” says Sal. “I see Khan Academy becoming the world's first free, world-class virtual school where anyone can learn anything--for free.” So turn on the fan, sign your child into khanacademy.org and grab that Belikin. Oh, you won’t be heading out to the veranda to put your feet up. This one is going to grab you and you’ll be so fascinated at how much fun your child is having that you will be challenging her to a contest to see who can do the best. The points and badges you’ll both be earning will make math homework more fun than heading down to Barefoot on a party night. A Hunting License is also required from the Forest Department under the Wildlife Protection Act Chapter 220 Revised Edition 2000·2003 of the Laws of Belize. The Fisheries Department along with the National Hicatee Conservation and Monitoring Network (NHCMN) have now revived national efforts to establish better management measures for the conservation of the Hicatee in Belize. Over the past years, the Fisheries Department has observed an increasing trend in the illegal harvesting and sale of the Central American River Turtle (Dermatemys mawii) locally known as "HICA TEE", The sale of these turtles, including its meat which is being served in restaurants and is promoted in Village events and other festivities throughout Belize has become more eminent. These practices are illegal in Belize and threaten the survival of this species. A recent survey conducted in 2010 in Belize indicates that populations are in decline, especially in areas traditionally fished by fishermen in rural areas. The Hicatee is a turtle endemic only to the region of the coastal lowlands of Southern Mexico, Northern Guatemala and Belize. Presently, Hicatee is classified as critically endangered (facing an extremely high risk of extinction) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In Belize, there are currently existing laws under the Fisheries Act for the protection and management of 'HICATEE', which are provided below: No person shall: • have in his possession more than three such turtles at any one time; • transport on any vehicle more than five such turtles; • fish for such turtles during the period from 1st May to the 31st May inclusive in any year; • fish for females of such turtles greater than 43cm (17.2 inches) and smaller than 38cm (15.2 inches); • fish for such turtles in any of the areas specified in the Fifth Schedule attached to these Regulations; • Sell or purchase such turtles. FIFTH SCHEDULE: Fishing for Hicatee in the following areas is prohibited: Belize River: from Beaver Dam Creek to Labouring Creek; New River: from Irish Creek to Water Bank; Rio Bravo: upstream from Dos Bocas Dam, including Booth's River; Cox and Mucklehany Lagoons and headwaters of Mussel Creek; Northern and Southern Lagoons and (Manatee lagoons and Manatee River); tributaries Sibun River: between Ferguson Bank and Sibun Bar. The Fisheries Department is requesting your kind cooperation in enforcing the current Fisheries Laws pertaining to Hicatee by informing the public that the 'SALE OF HICATEE IS ILLEGAL'. Please note that the Enforcement Unit of the Fisheries Department will be enforcing these laws, especially as it relates to ' PUBLIC EVENTS' and other 'CULTURAL ACTIVITIES". As a key stakeholder, the Fisheries Department will continue to consult and keep the National Association or Village Councils updated on any emerging issues or other related activities. Thanking you in advance for your committed support to the sustainable use and the conservation of the Hicatee. The Placencia Breeze – April 2011- Page 14 Bats go bananas over Bill’s rum soaked fruit Article & Photo by Barnacle Bill It all started with a single banana. We had been feeding the local birds for quite some time here in Maya Beach. They get all the watermelon and cantaloupe rinds, some leftover rice, and an occasional banana. One evening while we were sitting on the deck drinking some cold beer, we noticed a bat was swooping around the last dregs of a banana leftover. I saw a photo opportunity and grabbed a camera. It soon became apparent the bats didn’t much mind me sticking my lens right into their dinner buffet so we brought out more banana’s to keep up the feeding frenzy. My first shots were ‘OK’, but I knew with a little more thought and effort I could get some much better ones. I photographed a lot of bats over the next few months and received a lot of comments from a wide group of folks. One person sent me this link http://www.plosone.org/article/info% 3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0008993 explaining how some experts came to Cayo to study the effects fermented fruit has on fruit bats. The question was: Do they get hammered? As you may know, fruit that lays on the jungle floor ferments into ethanol, then animals eat it and some get a bit tipsy. They conducted their tests using an obstacle course and had some ‘drunken’ bats fly thru it. The bats passed with flying colors! So I decide to conduct my own research. I marinated a banana in One Barrel rum all day long, then set it out at dusk. These bats ate that banana along with about a shot of rum and showed no wobbly effects! They flew with no strange patterns, no mid-air collisions. One did bump into my head but we can’t say why. And I may have heard one belch. My conclusion: if you weigh 500g, don’t get into a rum drinking contest with a fruit bat. She has seen a lot of changes in the village over the year but she doesn’t mind them; she grew up in Belize City and is used to crowds. A love of cooking was instilled in her by her mother. “She taught all of her children to cook, the boys and girls. There were 12 of us, six boys and six girls. My father died young and my mother did not have the money to send any of us to high school. At age 13 ½ I went to work in a sewing factory.” Daisy explained. In 1992, Daisy opened her first business known simply as Daisy’s Ice Cream Parlor. At that time Daisy’s was THE hang out, especially for the younger crowd who all gravitated to Daisy’s. It was the only place in Placencia where someone could get a few scoops of ice cream and for the record the ice cream was delicious! At the time Daisy’s four children were attending primary and secondary school and they and all their friends felt the ice cream “I started small” Daisy explained. “First it was ice cream and pastries, and then I added burgers.” Eventually she expanded the menu to include Belizean cuisine, garlic butter shrimp, fried chicken, T-bone steak, and burritos. Her husband Ivan, a fishing guide, brings in the fish and lobster for the restaurant. Over the years Daisy’s grew into a fully fledged restaurant, relocating onto Placencia’s main road like so many other businesses. Daisy closed the restaurant in 2008 because she wanted to take a break, but when her son Jeremey wanted to go into the restaurant business and work with her, she re-opened the restaurant under the name of J-Dees. “He does the bartending and maintenance.” “Back before we had electricity, the generator at the co-op was turned off at midnight and this side of the road was a dark and scary place. It was just mangroves and brush. The houses were on the beach side.” Daisy went on reminiscing about Placencia of days gone by - the parties on the beach that lasted until sunrise. One person on a guitar while others would sing…. That was how Placencia used to be. As reggae music played on the speaker out on the verandah, Daisy talked about her other children. Her daughter Shelly, who is a nurse and living in Los Angeles, her daughter Tracy who lives in Cayo and is a teacher and her son Ivan Jr. who works with his father in Placencia as a tour guide. Daisy made sure all of her children attended high school, since she did not have that opportunity. J-Dee’s Restaurant & Bar is located on the main road in Placencia, north of the Everyday Market. MEDICAL SUPPLIES Many months ago, Rotarian Gail Dusa started looking in to obtaining medical supplies for the area. Working with the Rev. Tim Tam, Executive Director of The Word at Work (TWAW) organization in Amarillo, Texas, and our own Dr. Alexis Caballero, a list was prepared of needed supplies and arrangements were made to include the available items in a container being shipped by TWAW. Gail’s persistence and hard work resulted in Placencia Rotarians and Dr. Alexis meeting at Wallen’s Market in late March to load the many boxes into a truck and unloading them at the Clinic to be sorted through by Dr. Alexis and the Clinic staff. The shipment included boxes of such things as gauze, bandages, gloves and numerous other supplies, as well as dental chairs, that will all be put to good use in providing health care and dental services to area residents. We wish to thank Gail Dusa for her tenacity and all of her hard work following through on this, Harald and Carl Wallen for arranging to transport the many boxes from Belize City to Placencia and storing them until arrangements could be made to get them to the Clinic, and Dr. Alexis Caballero and the staff at the Clinic for their assistance. Special thanks need to go to the Rev. Tim Tam and The Word at Work organization for their efforts in shipping the equipment and supplies and to Jack Maxwell, Bixby, Oklahoma Rotarian and founder of the Medical Supplies Network, Inc. of Tulsa, Oklahoma for collecting the medical supplies and forging the connection with Mr. Tam and TWAW. Both MSNI and TWAW work with many organizations and groups in Belize supplying donated materials). We look forward to working with TWAW and MSNI on possible projects in the future. SCHOLARSHIPS The application deadline for scholarships for the next school year was April 1. Once the applications are received, the Rotary Club of Placencia’s Scholarship Committee will begin the screening process with the intention of selecting up to 6 students to receive scholarships for the next school year. It is expected that the scholarship recipients will be selected by the end of April to allow the students ample time to plan for the next school year and we will include the names of those selected in the May or June Breeze. The Rotary Club of Placencia meets Tuesday’s 12:30 PM @Yoli’s UPCOMING Planning is continuing for the annual Senior Lunch scheduled to be held on May 15, 2011 at the Tipsy Tuna. This will be our fourth time hosting this event, which has proven to be one of the most fulfilling ones that we hold every year as we honor the senior citizens of Placencia and Seine Bight Villages for all that they have done for our communities to make them better places. Planning is also continuing for this year’s Lobsterfest and our infamous Duck Race. Tickets for the Duck Race will go on sale ahead of Lobsterfest and, in the past, have sold out before the day of the race, so make sure that you watch for the start of ticket sales to avoid being disappointed. In addition to the above, we will continue to hold our monthly Bingo games to raise funds for various causes/projects and we stay in touch with the schools and other Rotary Clubs regarding how we may assist in projects being planned. OUR CLUB The Rotary Club of Placencia is proud of what our Club has accomplished in our community and hopes to continue to build on that success. All of the projects undertaken not only require labor to complete, but, also planning and coordination with the various groups we work with and Rotary Clubs from the U.S. and Canada. Please consider joining us and doing your part to make our community the best it can be. More information can be obtained by attending one of our meetings (Tuesdays at 12:30 PM at Yoli’s), visiting our web site (www.rotaryclubofplacencia.org) , or talking to any member of our Club. This is your community, please join us and do your part. www.rotaryclubofplacencia.org The Placencia Breeze April 2011- Page 23 St. John’s announces March Students of the Month Ricardo Rivera and Rene Leslie learn to make scientific observations, measurements and analyze data to learn how to wisely manage and enhance their beaches and reduce pollution as part of Unesco’s “Sandwatch” program. The Sandwatch program was first developed in Tobago in 1998 with funding from UNESCO, and has since been implemented in Dominica, St.Vincent and the Grenadines, and San Andreas, Columbia. The SandwatchProgram seeks to change the lifestyle and habits of children, youth and adults on a community–wide basis, to adapt to climate change by building ecosystem resilience, and to develop awareness of the fragile nature of the marine and Left to right: First Row: Aaliyah Leslie – Standard III, Keanna Leslie – Standard II, Shane Vernon – Infant I, Amy Faux – Infant I, Kandi Perry-Standard VI. Continued from pg 23 to the wise management and enhancement of their beaches and to reduce the level of pollution in adjoining seas and oceans. Activities include monitoring the Placencia beach to see what changes will occur over the years and incorporate monthly monitoring by using permanent transects. Students have thus far engaged in classroom presentations to learn about erosion and accretion, climate change, ocean acidification and its causes. Students were divided into three groups and their first hands-on activity was to identify an area on the beach where they will monitor beach changes using transects from fixed landmarks. They identified all existing structures, trees, signs, animals, debris, beach users and drew a map of their area on bristol board, they measured high and low water mark, they interviewed older community members to learn of visible changes of the beach over the years, they identified the types of sand grains found on the Placencia beach and looked at it under a microscope, an experience they explained as an eye opener of beautiful colours, shapes and texture and now want to venture to see other things. The Sandwatch Project will continue to identify and describe types of debris found on the beach, observe and interview beach users and conduct a beach clean up to culminate the project. Students have been very excited to participate in the project and thanks to their classroom teacher Mr. Jesus Cawich for his support and dedication and principal Ms. Loburn Brown Martinez for her approval for Std V students to participate and her desire to continue creating meaningful activities for her students to be engaged in during their school year. SEA would like to say farewell to Mr. Jesus Cawich as he moves on to teach to another school and welcome Mr. Justo Torres who will now work with Standard V students to complete the sand watch project. Future plans include implementing similar Sandwatch projects in Seine Bight, Hopkins and Monkey River villages. Ashley Garcia, Kerlin Puc, volunteer tutor, Allen Cano and Carina Ardon have fun learning. Staff photo Kerlin Puc, age 16, daughter of Ruth and Andy Puc tutors three Seine Bight students at her home every Sunday. In addition to reading and math, she makes time for spelling, art and recess. Kerlin’s mother cooks a hearty meal for the children's lunch . Kerlin used diagnostic tests from www.khanacademy.org to evaluate their math skills and a host of other web sites to tailor the curriculum material to her students’ abilities. When she finds something she cannot explain she searches for a You Tube video to explain it. Last week her students learned the seven continents, and the countries of the western hemisphere. “It is so much fun,” bubbles Carina. “I love Miss Kerlin’s school.” “I learn so much more when I teach something,” says Kerlin. Kerlin is earning her high school diploma using a home schooling program. Her goal is to attend university and become a doctor. The Placencia Breeze April 2011- Page 29 More mangos eaten fresh in the world than any other fruit! Just look up, they’re EVERYWHERE! In April and May many Placencia’s can be seen grabbing a mango from a nearby tree and biting into it to pull back the peel. One can cut an X in the top of the mango and peel back the skin like a banana, holding on to the bottom half of the fruit. It’s a little less messy, but worth it. Beyond being delicious and satisfying, mangoes are an excellent source of Vitamins A and C, as well as a good source of Potassium and anti-oxidants, Mangos beneficially contain an enzyme with stomach soothing properties similar to papain found in papayas. These same enzymes, makes green or ripe mango an ideal marinade ingredient. Mango Tango, a familiar Belizean marinade, is sold in local markets. Rich in potassium and containing antioxidants like beta carotene, an average sized mango is low in calories (approx. 110 per average sized mango), fat (only 1 gram) and sodium and very high in fiber. This fruit is a healthy diet staple. Placencia’s Mango Guacamole is a perfect accompaniment to its white sandy beaches, clear blue seas and gentle trade winds. Served with chips and an ice cold beer while watching the sunset over the lagoon, it’s a healthier alternative to cheese smothered tortilla chips. If there might be any left over (slim chance) garnish your homemade burrito! For a salad supper add chunks of leftover chicken to a green salad and garnish with Placencia’s Mango Guacamole. Happy eating! Placencia’s Mango Guacamole Ingredients • • • • • • • • 2 tablespoons minced white onion 2 limes, juiced 2 chile peppers, seeded, or Marie Sharps hot sauce to taste 2 limes, juiced (yes, two more) sea salt to taste 4 ripe avocados, peeled and pitted 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro 1 large mango - peeled, seeded, and chopped Directions 1. Combine the onion and the juice of 2 limes in a small bowl; allow the onion to soak in the lime juice for at least 1 hour. Strain and discard the excess juice. Set the onion aside. 2. Grind the deseeded chile peppers, the juice of the next 2 limes, and salt together in a food processor or mash in a bowl until no large chunks of pepper remain. (If using hot sauce simply add to lime juice and toss in with the avocados before mashing or blending.) 3. Add 1 avocado and process until creamy and smooth; repeat with remaining avocados. Transfer the mixture to a serving bowl; fold the onion, cilantro, and mango into the avocado mixture. Serve at room temperature. The attending vet for the month was Dr. Floyd Bennett, who offered discounts on all surgeries performed over the weekend. Along with the discounted surgery cost, Dr. Bennett gave each surgery patient an exam, nail trim, and flea & tick treatment for the month. These additional services were given FREE to all surgery patients. Other specials for the month, were Heartgard & Iverhart for monthly heartworm preventative, and also Advantage & Vectra for cat flea treatments. These products were offered at half price for all, with an extra $1.00 discount on each dose for current PHS members. Sunday started off with a bang. There was only one surgery scheduled, but even before that an emergency came through the door. A dog had been hit on the road and needed immediate attention. Dr. Bennett was able to see the dog immediately and ascertained that there were no broken bones, only less serious damage, which was attended to. This was followed by 3 feral cats being brought in by Deb Coston, a PHS Board member, who is helping with the Feral Cat Program. For this weekend, there were 6 traps set in attempt of catching feral cats for surgery and subsequent release. No feral cats were caught overnight Friday for the Saturday clinic, but 3 were caught overnight Saturday for Sunday’s clinic. PHS is still dedicated to reducing the feral population on the Placencia Peninsula. Currently we will not be holding special clinics for this purpose, but will be trying to catch ferals for surgery on the weekends that a vet is here for a regular clinic. For the 2 day clinic there were a total of 39 animals seen by Dr. Bennett. He performed the following services for them: 1 dog was spayed; 1 dog was neutered 1 feral cat was spayed; 2 feral cats were neutered 1 wart removal surgery; 1 growth removal surgery 1 teeth cleaning 22 6-in-1 vaccinations given 10 rabies vaccinations given We thank the volunteers for the March clinic who donated their time and talents to PHS. They were: Penny Dial, Juana Itch, Mary Ann Kaye, Jeanne Marechal, Angie Markham, Mary Smith, Pat Sylvester, Jarka Tesnerova, John VanDeurzen, and Pat VanDeurzen. Also a big thanks to Roberts Grove, who hosted Dr. Bennett for the weekend. Pet question for the month: It was invented back in 1872 and it is a danger to dogs. What is it? Look for the answer in the next Clinic Report Article.
