Engine Overview
In February of 2004, Brother® released the HL-5140/5150/5170. Reasonably priced with a duty cycle of 20k pages per month, this 21
page per minute printer has a first page out in less than 10 seconds. Like many other Brother® systems, the HL-5170 uses separate
toner and drum units that snap together but are sold as separate OEM SKUs. This printer series uses TN540 and TN-570 low yield
and high yield toner cartridges, which are rated for 3.5k and 6.7k pages. The drum unit, DR-510, is rated for 20k pages. Equivalent
models include MFC 8220, 8440, and DCP 8040 and 8045.

Static Control® has newly qualified for use with the Brother® HL-5170 series printer (TN-540/570
toner unit) its Brother® HL-1240 doctor blade and doctor blade sealing foam. The doctor blade
and doctor blade sealing foam function properly with the OEM and SCC systems, enabling the
remanufacture of any TN-540 or 570 core, regardless of the condition of the OEM doctor blade
and sealing foam. When coupled with SCC’s HL-1240 developer roller, the HL-1240 doctor blade
and doctor blade sealing foam reduce print defects, achieve the highest print quality, and prevent
toner leakage. The doctor blade sealing foam must be replaced when replacing the doctor blade to
prevent toner leakage, as removal of the OEM doctor blade will damage the sealing foam.

Developer roller
SCC has qualified its Brother HL-1240 replacement developer roller for use in remanufacturing the
Brother® HL-5170 toner cartridge. This roller offers the same look, form, fit and function as the OEM
and offers very comparable image density and page yield. This replacement developer roller is crossqualified to function in numerous compatible printers, fax machines, digital copiers and multifunction
printers that utilize the TN430/TN460, TN530/TN560, and TN540/TN570 toner cartridge. It performs
well when used in combination with either OEM stock components or SCC system replacement components. While it may not be necessary to replace the developer roller each time the cartridge is
remanufactured, this component will become worn over time. Damage can occur from wear or rough
handling, causing print defects including light print, repeating patterns and streaks.
