Gallery Guide www.scva.ac.uk Masterpieces Art and East Anglia 14 September 2013 – 24 February 2014 Photo courtesy of Norfolk Museums & Archaeology Service, Cromer Museum SCVA_Master_GalleryGuide _A5_8pp vF.indd 1 14/02/2014 12:20 Welcome to Masterpieces: Art and East Anglia This Guide provides a list of all works, by location, in the sequence you will encounter them as you move through the galleries. This landmark exhibition celebrates the rich and distinctive culture and artistic heritage of East Anglia, from antiquity through to the present day, and marks the unveiling of the newly-refurbished Sainsbury Centre galleries by Foster + Partners. Featuring some 270 works drawn from over 65 public and private collections, Masterpieces is the most ambitious exhibition ever staged by the Centre – organised in honour of the 50th anniversary of the University of East Anglia. Curator Ian Collins has drawn together a diverse selection of masterworks that range from a flint handaxe worked some 700,000 years ago to an ironstone pebble from the same Norfolk beach carved into a reclining figure by Henry Moore in 1930. Gallery 2 The list includes artists as diverse as BurneJones, Constable, Freud, Gainsborough, Gormley, Hambling, Holbein, Kiefer, Spencer and Turner. The exhibition also explores the worlds of fashion, photography, craft and design with spectacular jewellery, architecture, furniture, stained glass and posters. You will find that works in the exhibition are not just confined to our new temporary exhibition suite but are displayed throughout the Centre. Ana Maria Pacheco’s spectacular work The Longest Journey is moored in the East End Gallery, John McLean’s stained glass window, destined for Norwich Cathedral, stands adjacent to the Living Area and the iconic Lotus 72 racing car takes up pole position in the Modern Life Café. We hope you enjoy Masterpieces and your visit to the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts.
