High, mid or low vacuum – we master them all
Optimal solutions
Capture at source technology can be divided in two main
categories:
•
•
Capturing at source
The most efficient way to capture air pollution in industry
is as close to the source as possible. One avoids extracting
large air volumes and above all the pollutant is not spread
around in the room. This is what we refer to as “capturing at source”. Contaminants may be in the form of solid
waste, dust, fume, mist and gas, produced, for example, in
a metalworking process such as welding or grinding or in
a handling process involving foodstuffs or chemicals. The
extraction of exhaust fumes from car and truck engines is
another typical example of solving problems at source.
High vacuum = high speed extraction low air volume
Low vacuum = low speed extraction high air volume
Sometimes we also refer to mid vacuum. This technique is
applied in applications with light dust and shavings where
the extraction capacity can be adjusted in order to save
energy and reduce noise.
Nederman masters the whole spectra of vacuum
technologies – from high to low vacuum. Therefore, we
always can offer the most practical and cost-effective
solution from our extensive range of products and systems.
See also product guides on pages 8-11
High vacuum
High vacuum, i.e.high speed extraction is done very close
to the source or directly on the source. Typical applications
are floor and machine cleaning, extraction from high
speed tools such as grinders, cutters, sanders and suction
from welding guns. The high vacuum technology allows
solutions with flexibility over the whole working area
combined with low air volumes.
Low vacuum, i.e low speed extraction, allows capturing
the pollutants at a greater distance due to the higher air
flow. Low speed capturing is recommended for extraction
of fumes, dust exhaust and other airborne particles. The
extraction is carried out with extraction arms, exhaust
nozzles, enclosures and canopies over machines.

Applications with explosive risks
Risk Evaluation Form
The Nederman Risk Assessment Report (published on
www.nederman.com), filled in by the customer, qualifies
and quantifies the pertinent aspects of the production
process, including, for example, the type and composition
of the dust, the air flow requirements and the extraction
system. We then recommend suitable equipment for the
described application and guarantee its functionality
with respect to the information supplied. Each project is
individually documented in detail for future reference.
The consequences of fires or explosions can be extensive
and include rupture of afilter systems and recirculation of
contaminated air with subsequent health risks and damage
to plant. Although it is impossible to completely eliminate
the risk of creating explosive mixtures, it is possible to
reduce the risk of ignition and the effects of an explosion.
Where dust is concerned, assessment is based on the risk
of combustible dust being present in the atmosphere,
classified on a scale from continuous presence of explosive
concentrations to unlikely presence with limited short
term risks. A similar scale is used for assessing the risks
involved when dealing with gases.
Directives for explosive applications
Within the EU, harmonized regulations have been in force
since 1994, whereby employers are required to assess the
risk of creating an explosive atmosphere in their production
environments. Two other directives became mandatory in
2003 concerning explosive applications:
European Directive 99/92/EC/ATEX 137
This directive states that it is the responsibility of the user/
employer, to assess and classify the working environment.
Thus, the risk of working in a potentially explosive
atmosphere is the first criterion that has to be examined
when choosing an extraction arm, filter or fan for any
operation or process. The Nederman Risk Assessement
Report will be the basis for the choice of products for
which we, as manufacturer and supplier, will be responsible
with regard to product compliance.
European Directive 94/9/EC/ATEX 100a
The European Directive 94/9/EC applies to the equipment
manufacturers and harmonizes the technical and legal
standards to which equipment for use in potentially
explosive atmospheres is manufactured.
What is a dust explosion?
An explosion is the rapid combustion of a mixture of dust and gas
– usually air. Dust concentrations have to be high enough to feed
the combustion chain reaction. The speed of the resulting shock
wave is less than 340 m/s. If the mixture is highly turbulent there
could be a more violent explosion and the shock wave could reach
2,000 m/s, causing extensive damage. Potential ignition sources
are also important to assess. For example, sparks from grinding
or welding, electrical sparks, and glowing material from the work
process.
Examples of different types of explosive dust
Organic dust in the food industry:
Baking flour, soup powder, spices,
flavouring
Synthetic organic dust:
Powder paint, plastic, grinding dust
Metal dust:
Aluminium, magnesium, titanium,
and chromium
Pharmaceutical dust:
A great number of powders
Nederman offers a range of Ex approved and
marked products which are manufactured
according to these requirements.

Capture at source – Low vacuum solutions
Generally speaking, low vacuum products and systems are
used for extraction purposes where the air is contaminated
with small, light and low velocity particles that can be
regarded, for design purposes, as acting like a gas. Welding
fume and baking flour dust are good examples of potentially
hazardous substances that are best dealt with at source.
This means that:
• their removal uses high volumes of air, 600 – 2000 m³/h
• they are extracted via large diameter ducting at relatively low speeds, around 10 – 25 m/s
• the pressure drops that have to be overcome are low,
normally in the region of 1 – 3 kPa.
Typical applications for low vacuum solutions
• engineering processes such as welding
• grinding and oil mist recycling
• food and pharmaceutical processes involving the handling
of powders or chemicals. In these last instances there is
often a latent explosion risk and specially adapted products are available for dealing with such situations.
Bench top applications
Bench top extraction of fumes, vapours and light dust is
often used in small-scale or light industrial applications
such as soldering and gluing or working with solvents.
Schools, laboratories, health clinics and medical research
institutions are some of the workplaces that can benefit
from these solutions. Detailed product information about
bench top extraction can be found in the Nederman Product
Catalogue.

How to dimension
In the dimensioning example it is assumed that only 50%
of the extractors are in operation simultaneously. The
calculation then provides the approximate maximum airflow
and vacuum requirements so that a suitable fan can be
chosen. If a careful analysis of frequency of use is carried
out, and dampers and inverter equipment are installed, it
will often be possible to further reduce the size of the fan.
Dimensioning the ducting
The following simplified dimensioning procedure can be
used for any extraction system:
1. Draw a simple sketch
Mark the proposed locations of the extractors, the filter (if
any) and the fan. Note the length of the ducting and how
many 90° bends are required. In this example it has been
assumed that there are 5+5+5+5+5 m of ducting and 5
bends.
4. Calculate the required vacuum
Determine the required vacuum by carrying out the
following steps:
a) Read off the pressure drops for the 4 m and 2 m NEX
HDs working at 1200 m³/h. The model requiring the
greatest vacuum will provide the dimensioning value. In
this case, it is 340 Pa for the 4 m arm.
Note! Only one arm shall be calculated.
b) Add 5 Pa for every metre of duct, measured from the
arm furthest away from the fan. 20 metre of duct in this
example.
c) Add a further 15 Pa for every 90° bend. 5 bends in this
example.
d) Add 1200 Pa for the filter, FilterMax F, single module.
(With a filter area of 60 m² and an operational load of 40
m³/m²h the filter unit can handle an airflow of
2400 m³/h). See page 25 for suitable filter cartridge. The
required vacuum is: 340 + (20 x 5) + (5 x 15) + 1200 =
1715 Pa
2. Choose extraction arms
Two 4 m and two 2 m NEX HD arms have been chosen.
3. Calculate the total airflow required
The arms will be used for heavy welding, requiring 1200
m³/h per arm. This means a potential maximum airflow
of 4800 m³/h if in operation simultaneously. In practice,
however, it is most probable that only 2 arms will be in
operation at the same time, which means that the design
airflow rate will only be 2400 m³/h (1200 m³/h + 1200 m³/h
= 2400 m³/h, 50% use).
A= Filter
B= Fan
13
5. Choose the fan
The connection from the extractor arm to the main duct
should always be at least 160 mm in diameter.
For more precise dimensioning of ducting, please contact
your supplier.
Note!
N
When using the NEDQuote design and calculation
program, different installation set-ups can be quickly
investigated to determine an optimum solution.

How to dimension High Vacuum Systems see page 40.
x= airflow
y= static pressure
The required fan capacity is 2400 m³/h at 1715 Pa.
A suitable fan is the NCF 30/25.
In this example, the following duct dimensions are
required:
From arm 1 to arm 2 From arm 2 to arm 3 From arm 3 to arm 4 From arm 4 to filter 2
From filter to fan 2
From fan to outlet 14
Always check that there is a sufficient incoming air supply
to the workplace. In a common ducting system, with one
fan serving several extractors, there is a risk of temporary
fluctuations in suction capacity and pressure drop, but
these problems are easily overcome by using dampers and
frequency controlled fan.

Low Vacuum Extraction Arms
The Nederman range of extraction arms covers a wide
variety of applications for use in both explosive and nonexplosive environments. The different models meet the
requirements of the relevant European Directives, such as
Directive 98/37/EC concerning safety of machinery and
Directive 94/9/EC, commonly known as the ATEX 100a
Directive, concerning the use of equipment and protective
systems in potentially explosive atmospheres.
99/92/EC, or ATEX 137, to assess and classify the working
environment. The resulting classification will be the basis
for the choice of arm for which Nederman, as manufacturer
and supplier, will be responsible with regard to product
compliance.
All Nederman arms are highly flexible, and simple to
position, extend and retract. Different attachments are
available for wall, ceiling or extension bracket mounting
as well as a number of accessories, including hoods and

Low Vacuum Filters
The first step towards effective and safe removal of fumes,
gases and dust from the workplace is choosing the most
suitable extraction arm. The next step is to consider how the
contaminants are to be removed from the extracted air so
that it can be returned to the atmosphere or recycled without
negative impact on the environment or workplace. These
situations are often governed by stringent regulations with
significant economic penalties if they are not observed.
Filter systems must therefore be chosen to fulfil a number
of basic requirements and the first main division of types is
with regard to their use in explosive or non-explosive environments. The production environment must be assessed
and classified according to current directives. The filters in
this handbook are for stationary installation; there is also an
extensive choice of mobile filter units, see the Nederman
Product catalogue for further details.
The Nederman FilterMax System
This is a modular system of filter units designed to deal
with all types of fume and dust resulting from mechanical
working or handling of a wide range of materials.
If additional workplaces are added to the extraction system,
increasing airflow requirements, then new modular sections
can be easily added.
There is also a compact stand-alone unit, C 25, for low volume applications where space is limited.
Dimensioning example
Light welding requires handling a load of 50 m³/m²h. In a
FilterMax DF with a single module the filter area is 72 m²,
which means that it can filter 3600 m³/h (50 m³/m²h x 72 m²).
This is equivalent to the volumes of extracted air from 3 or
4 welding stations in simultaneous operation. It could be
advantageous to consider a twin module set-up to ensure
sufficient capacity and longer cartridge life.
Note:
The welding shop in the example might have a total of 15
welding stations, but with a usage frequency of 15%, the
filter suggested will be sufficient.
When designing filter systems it is always important to take
into account additional parameters such as the temperature
of the extracted air at the inlet, the required filtration efficiency, possible recirculation of air and potential safety
hazards.
Nederman FilterMax C25
For further information see the Nederman Product Catalogue.

Nederman FilterMax F 30, 60 and 90
The filter handles the air polution from metal industries as
well as non explosive dust from other industries. Integrated
pre-seperator for coarse particles, sparks, etc. A wide range
of cartridges for different purposes are available. Protection
class IP54. In- and outdoor installation.
Nederman FilterMax DF 40, 80 and 120
The filter handles the air polution from metal industries as
well as non explosive dust from other industries. A wide
range of cartridges for different purposes are available. Protection class IP54. In- and outdoor installation.
Nederman FilterMax SFC
FilterMax SFC gives increased safety against release of
dangerous dust into the atmosphere. If the filtered air is recirculated a FilterMax SFC is vital to maintain a safe work
environment. In combination with a pressure switch the
FilterMax SFC can work as an emmission alarm as well as
a safety filter. FilterMax SFC can be used as a heavy duty
general filter cabinet in applications such as vehicle exhaust
or fine dust. One FilterMax SFC module filters the air from
one FilterMax F or FilterMax DF module. The maximum
capacity is 4000 m³/h, at heavy loads this is reduced down
to 2000 m³/h. For general filtration of dust or fume the
capacity is 2000 m³/h. The FilterMax SFC cabinet can be
equiped with straight inlets or a combinations of 90° and
straight inlets.
Nederman FilterMax DX 3000, 6000 and 9000
Designed for extraction of dry powder or dust with explosion risk applications or if explosion protection is demanded accordingly to the ATEX directive. Nederman’s Dustline
serie includes FilterMax DX and extraction arms and fans
for explosive environments. Food, medical or chemical industries are likely users for this application. Protection class
IP65.

Filter Cartridges
A number of different types of filter cartridges are available
to deal with the contaminants. These are chosen depending
on the source of the contaminant and the required degree
of filtration. The type and intensity of the operations
will determine the life of the cartridge, typically around
6000 hours of continual use. Filter cartridges are chosen
depending on specific filtration requirements defined by
particle characteristics and required efficiency.

Oil Mist Filters
Dealing with oil mist
Oil mist is the aerosol that is often formed when oil is used
as a coolant/lubricant during the machining of metal components. The mist comprises drops of oil, or oil and water
emulsion. It is well known than prolonged and repeated
exposure to oil products can be detrimental to health, which
means that good ventilation must be ensured under all
working conditions. Precipitation of oil mist on machinery,
equipment and the workplace floor can be both detrimental
and dangerous.
Mineral oil-based metalworking fluids are known as
neat cutting oils or straight oils. They normally contain a
number of undisclosed additives that can affect the viscosity of the oil. Emulsions normally contain 5 – 10% watersoluble oil and 90 – 95% water.
The Nederman range of oil mist filters NOM is designed
for use in conjunction with machining work where emulsions are used as the coolant/lubricant. They can also be
used in the metalworking press industry. Contact Nederman
for further information.
If straight oil is used the load must be moderate and limited
to 8 – 100 mg/m³ in the aerosol phase. The viscosity of the
coolant and degree of contamination will also affect the efficiency of the filter system and its working life.

Coolant viscosity ranges and suitability
NOM Oil Mist Filters have a unique filter concept using
one of the most advanced filter media on the market
offering trouble-free operation and low maintenance costs.
99.97% filtration efficiency is guaranteed when a HEPA
filter is used. A high level of filtration combined with a
gravity drip self-cleaning function ensures protection for
both personnel and equipment.
The filter units are simple to install, even in limited spaces.
All models are machine-mountable. Compact or standalone models are available. In processes where oil smoke
frequently occurs, the NOM Oil Mist Filter can be used to
handle the oil mist deriving from swarf and chips created,
for example, by CNC machines.
Oil smoke occurs when straight oil, used as lubricant/
coolant, heats up and a white or bluish-white smoke is given
28
off. The smoke comprises submicron-size particles or partially combusted oil. This often occurs, for example, in hot
bar press applications, and when gear cutting and die-casting aluminium. Contact Nederman for further information.
Recommended capacity
Investigate the routines to get full information regarding
number of machines operating at the same time, size of
machines, working hours a day (shift) and the cycle time.
Calculate the airflow capacity from a typical situation
For frequently openings of the door (manually handling
of tools, item, etc) an increased airflow is required in the
opening period due to increased open areas.
For automatic machines with normally closed doors it is
necessary to delay opening of the door.
It is of primary importance to generate well balanced
under-pressure so the oil-mist is removed and the bigger
droplets of oil or emulsion stay back in the machine for
recycling. Recommended air velocity 0.2 m/s through
closed machines
Example:
Scrap openings and other openings and gaps in a closed
machine might give an area like 1.0 m².
1.0 m2 x 0.2 m/s x 3600sek = 800 m3/h
A totally open machine needs a column hood.
Recommendation for emulsions
Pay attention to the viscosity (viscosity >200mm²/s, balance the airflow carefully) Make sure the filter never is
running with clean air through the filters. Never leave the
dirty filters unused for a longer period time. If filter is left
unused or running with clean air, water will dry out from
the emulsion which will crystallize on the filter surface, and
might block the filter. (Nedermans filters can be cleaned
with lukewarm water and dishing detergent like Fairy, if
necessary)
Recommendations for straight oil
Applications with straight oil and high workload need a
well balanced down time period for at least 2 x30 min/24
hours for draining the filters.
Nederman NOM 4
The NOM 4 is designed for single CNC machines with
limited oil mist, enclosed cabinet.
Nederman NOM 11, NOM 18 and NOM 28
These filters are designed for applications with need for
larger airflow capacities. In all metal fabrication with oil
mist troubles, these filters will fit into a central system,
connected to each machine. All units are equipped with
pressure gauge for control of filters as well as a indication
for need of cleaning (self draining).

Recommended installation
During operation with closed door the airflow can be
reduced, i.e. with a motorized damper. Before the end
of the cycle the airflow can be increased by opening of
the damper. The reduced airflow will reduce the amount
of extracted oil mist and oil vapors. The damper control
could be connected to a dedicated output from the machine
control system or from a signal from the coolant pump
system.
30
The position of the outlet in the CNC machine should be
protected from direct oil injections, as from the chuck.
Install adjustable dampers for each machine.
Low Vacuum Fans
The first design criterion is whether or not the environment
can be subject to explosions. The production environment
must be assessed and classified according to current
directives.
Nederman fans are designed for use in all types of
industrial processes and ventilation systems, and are
constructed for both indoor and outdoor use. The choice of
fan depends on the pressure drops and flow requirements
of the system in question. In some cases it might be more
economical to choose a number of smaller fans instead
of one central fan for space reasons or when loading
conditions are difficult to specify.
The size of the fan will be determined by the vacuum
required to overcome the pressure drops in the extraction
arms, filters and ducting and by the airflows required
to maintain the correct transportation speeds of the
contaminated air. To reduce power costs and increase
efficiency, the use of fan starters, dampers and fan inverters
is recommended. These will minimize the required airflows
in the system and optimize the fan speed at different work
loads.
Sound absorbers are available for use with NCF range fans.

representative for details.

Airflow control
Fans designed to handle full-time use of all extraction
arms in an installation risk being over-dimensioned. This is
because the frequency of use at each workplace is generally
significantly lower than a theoretical maximum design load.
To deal with these situations there are Nederman solutions
that offer considerable savings in power and maintenance
costs. Noise levels will also be reduced if airflows can be
kept to a minimum.
Nederman Fan Starter/Fan Contactor
The cost-effectiveness of the extraction system can be
improved if the fan only operates when work is being
carried out. A fan contactor can be activated via a sensor
clamp attached to the earth cable of welding equipment or a
switch in the hood.
Installing a fan starter:
• reduces power costs
• minimizes the volume of heated air extracted air from the
premises
• allows a stop delay of up to 5 minutes to ensure extraction
of remaining dust and fumes

Nederman Fan Inverter
The Nederman Fan Inverter detects the pressure changes
in the extraction system and adjusts the speed of the fan
accordingly.
The fan inverter:
• ensures the correct airflow for any given combination of
extractors in use
• reduces noise levels that would otherwise occur if the
system were under-loaded
• activates the frequency controller via a timer, switching
on and off depending on working hours
The inclusion of manual or automatic dampers in the
extraction system will also significantly improve its overall
efficiency and reduce running costs. The diagram shows
typical power savings in an extraction system when a fan
inverter is installed.

Nederman Fan Control
Nederman Motorized Damper
Less heated air is extracted to outside, and less electricity
consumed if the fan only operates while the work is in
progress. Two basic options give either the ability to switch
on/off the fan manually at the hood, or automatically with a
sensor clamp. Single phase power supply of the Operation
Box, 110/120 - 220/240V, 50/60Hz.
The efficiency of a multi-extraction point system can also
be improved if the fan only extracts air from the extraction
points that are in use. A motorised damper can be activated
via a sensor clamp attached to the earth cable of welding
equipment or a switch in the hood.
• Consists of a fan contactor and an Operation Box
• The automatic Fan Control has a sensor clamp to be attached on the ground cable of the welding set for
automatic start of the fan. It is able to detect currents from
8A
• The Operation Box consists of a transformer 30VA for the
light kit in the extraction arm, a timer for delay of fan stop
variable 0-5 minutes, two separate connections for sensor
clamps
• The Operation Box can be controlled by any closing
contact from other processes
• The Fan Contactor has a fan motor protection included.
• Opens or closes the connection to the ducting system
• Allows a closing delay of up to 5 minutes to ensure
extraction of remaining dust and fumes. Reduces energy
costs and increases efficiency. Provides optimum airflow
within a multi arm system, with the possibility of using
a smaller fan and automatic start/stop. The motorised
damper is available in two models. Manual, using a hood
mounted switch set, or automatic using a sensor clamp for
welding.
• Consists of a Motor Damper and an Operation Box
• Three damper sizes available diameter 125, 160 and
200 mm
• The Motor Damper Automatic has a sensor clamp to
be attached on the ground cable of the welding set for
automatic start of the fan and automatic control of the
damper
• The Operation Box consists of a transformer 30VA for the
light kit in the extraction arm, a timer for delay of damper
closing variable 0-5 minutes, two separate connections for
sensor clamps
• The Operation Box can be controlled by any closing
contact from other processes
• Connect the Motor Damper to a Fan Contactor to start the
fan.

Capture at source – High vacuum solutions
A Nederman High Vacuum System offers multi–
functionality. This means that our installations can be
designed for any application:
• Welding fume extraction
• Grinding/sanding/cutting dust extraction
• Cleaning
• Metal chip extraction
Dimensioning
To dimension a high vacuum installation, the total airflow
needed (m³/h) must be established. This is much depending
on the application and also on the use of automatic valves.
To make it easier to determine which High Vacuum Unit to
choose, the names of the products are related to their capacity. For example, a “VAC 20-2500” provides an approximate airflow of 2500 m³/h at a working vacuum of -20 kPa. Airflow
Installations without automatic valves must be dimensioned
for the full use of all outlets! The capacity of the vacuum
unit and the pipe system must be large enough for all outlets
connected at the same time. Installations with automatic
valves can be reduced in size. The vacuum unit and also the
pipe system can be made smaller.
Due to the fact that the valves open and close automatically
as soon as a tool is, respectively, switched on or off, the installation can be sized for the average amount of users at the
same time. Even if this is possible also when using manual
flap valves, it is now known that the valves will close as
soon as the operation is discontinued, thus the vacuum level
can be guaranteed. The average amount of users for which
the installation is designed should be agreed upon together
with the customer. It is known from experience that the
amount of users on an average is about 30 % of the total
amount.
On larger installations, the required airflow can therefore be
reduced to 30% of the flow for full use of all outlets. There
are different simultaneous factors for dfferent applications
as shown in the calculation sheets.
Vacuum
Normally the vacuum is not calculated if the basis requirements below are met. If the installation for example contains much longer piping system please ask Nederman for
advise. The procedures of how to make the right choice can
best be illustrated by going through examples on the following page. In assistance to this, the sheets and diagrams will
be helpful.
Basics
All values given for vacuum and flow as well as all other
design parameters are based on some general basic rules.
• Total length from vacuum unit to the furthest away located
inlet, Max 200 m.
• Main pipe diameter 100 mm.
• Max flow/main pipe 6-800 m³/h (600 is the norm, 800 can
be accepted intermittent)
• When required the main pipe system is build up by several
100 mm pipes.
• Dropper pipes Ø 63 mm.
• Max length of a dropper pipe 15 m.
• Only one inlet (> 150 m³/h)/dropper.
NOTE!
A high vacuum system needs a minimum pressure drop in
the system to work properly as e.g. filter cleaning is based
on a pressure difference in the system and the outside atmosphere. Using short hoses or big diameters in pipes and
hoses, the pressure drop can be considerably lower the normal and therefore result in poor filter cleaning.
When a system is used by few operators (compared to calculated simultaneous factor), the amount of air taken in at a
specific inlet can me much higher than what is mentioned in
the calculation sheets, or the velocity in the pipes might me
to low to transport the material.

Example (arrow): 7 grinding places (Ø 32 mm) and 2
cleaning places (Ø 38 mm)
A. All grinding places are permanently connected to the
system. Floor cleaning is carried out after normal working
hours and the equipment is disconnected when not in use,
thus that airflow can be disregarded.
Grinding: 7 x 200 m³/h = 1400 m³/h
Cleaning: 2 x 250 m³/h = 500 m³/h
Required airflow = 1400 m³/h
If floor cleaning is to be carried out during normal working
hours, 500 m3/h has to be added to the total airflow, thus a
different choice of vacuum unit is required.
Choice: 1 piece VAC 20-1500 (see A)
B. All grinding places are equipped with automatic valves.
Floor cleaning is carried out after normal working hours
and the equipment is disconnected when not in use, thus
that airflow can be disregarded. It has been agreed together
with the customer that a simultaneous factor of 25 % is the
average for his workshop.
Grinding: 7 x 200 m³/h x 0.25 = 350 m³/h
Cleaning: 2 x 250 m³/h = 500 m³/h
Required airflow = 500 m³/h
The required airflow at cleaning will determine the choice
of vacuum unit.

Dust explosions
On 1 July 2003, two ATEX directives became mandatory:
The ATEX Directive 94/9/EC, which applies to equipment
manufacturers and harmonizes the technical and legal
standards to which equipment for use in potentially
explosive atmospheres is manufactured.
The ATEX Directive 99/92/EC, which applies to endusers and requires a complete, documented analysis to be
conducted on sites that may have a potentially explosive
atmosphere and that only ATEX certified electrical,
mechanical and safety related systems are installed.
The Directive 99/92/EC states that it is the responsibility
of the user/employer to assess and classify the working
environment as to whether there is a risk of explosive
atmospheres, taking into account at least the following:
• the likelihood that explosive atmospheres will occur and their persistence.
• the likelihood that ignition sources, including electrostatic discharges, will be present and become active and effective.
• the installations, substances used, processes and their possible interactions.
• the scale of the anticipated effects.
In short, the first step is to determine whether the risk
is due to gas or dust, the second step is to determine the
classification zone.
Classification zones for GAS
Zone 0: An area where an explosive atmosphere is
continually present or present for long periods of time, for
example inside liquid fuel tanks.
Zone 1: An area where an explosive atmosphere is present
in normal operation but not continually, for example
refuelling areas.
Zone 2: An area where an explosive atmosphere is not
likely to occur in normal operation and if it does occur it
will exist only for a short time, for example storage areas of
solvent in sealed drums.
Classification zones for DUST
Zone 20: Place in which an explosive atmosphere in
the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is present
continuously, or for long periods of time or frequently.
Zone 21: Place in which an explosive atmosphere in the
form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is likely to occur
in normal operation occasionally.
42
Zone 22: Place in which an explosive atmosphere in the
form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is not likely to
occur in normal operation but if it does occur, will persist
for a short period only.
In addition, the kst-value (dust explosion constant) and
temperature range must be established in order to complete
the specification of the products.
Risk assessment
Due to the fact that most organic materials, synthetic
materials and metals can explode, a great deal of attention
has been given to dust explosions in recent years. The
risk of a dust explosion requires the presence of three
components: oxygen, a dust cloud with the necessary
particle size and migration characteristics, and a source of
ignition.
Oxygen – is always present to some extent.
Dust – a high concentration (> 40 g/m3) of most substances
is required to create a risk of a dust explosion (a simple
test, though not applicable to all materials: if you cannot
see a 25 W light bulb from a distance of 2 m, then there is a
risk of a dust explosion). If this is the case, the dust density
is far higher than the hygienic limit, so it is most unlikely
that such a zone will exist inside a working environment.
This concentration level will only be found inside a filter,
container or similar space and the Directives will not be
applicable unless there is electrical equipment inside.
Ignition – a flame, heat or more likely static electricity can
start an explosion.
A Nederman extraction system comprises conductive parts,
steel pipes, conductive hose couplers, valves in conductive
plastic etc, to avoid sparks from static electricity.
Nederman FlexFilter solutions are available for use in
Zones 21 and 22.
The Nederman Norclean line includes products for use in
Zones 00, 01, 02 and 20.
Risk assessments often show that there might be a high
enough concentration of dust inside the filter to cause an
explosion. In these cases, most filters can be supplied with
an explosion relief panel. This must be vented or placed
outdoors and surrounded by a clearly designated safety
zone.
General design rules
a) Risk zone approx. 15 m (depending on material).
b) Unit securely ancored to the floor.
c) Max. 1 m length, min. 2 mm pipe thickness. No diameter reduction.
d) Well displayed warning signs.

High Vacuum Valves
Automatic vacuum valves
A wide range of automatic vacuum valves is the key to
an efficient high vacuum system. The valve controls the
capacity of the system and makes it easier to decide which
unit you´ll need. All this will save operating costs. The
range of valves can be used for welding, grinding, floor
cleaning or other applications. TAV 50 can be fitted with
a micro switch which is part of an AS-set (option). The
switch controls the vacuum plant to make it stop when all
valves are closed and to make it start again as soon as a
valve is opened. A pilot signal cable and a suitable motor
starter are required to execute this function.
Nederman TAV 50
The TAV valve opens and closes by means of a pneumatic
cylinder. The cylinder can be controlled by a flow sensing
valve for pneumatic tools, or by a solenoid valve for electrical tools, welding and other applications. The TAV valve
is suitable where automatic vacuum valves are required.
The TAV valve can be used for welding, grinding, floorcleaning or other applications. The TAV valve can be fitted
to the droppers or to swing arms. Connection: ID male
coupler: Ø 50 mm, OD: Ø 63 mm.
NB. All valves require AS-set for automatic start/stop of
vacuum unit.

1*) Main components specified in manual document. 2*) Recommended mains fuses are somewhat larger than normally required with Y/D-starting. Most high
vacuum units are ”heavy started” and therefore require specified fuses. Cartridge type fuses recommended. Automatic circuit breakers normally ”too fast”. 3*)
Different motors might have slightly different figures. 4*) For Y/D-starting, the motor overload relay is set 0.58 x nominal motor current. 5*) Listed cable area is
minimum area at 40 °C (104 °F) ambient temperature. Several factors can influence required cable area. Installer is responsible for correct choice of cable. 6*)
On most markets a maintenance switch is required. Listed switches are fitted with one auxiliary switch for wiring to starter terminals 1-2.

Two different kit designs are available.
Dust extraxtion kits for rotating sanders
The fixed aluminium manifold is available in many models
to fit different tools. A durable polyurethane hood snaps
into the fixed manifold. The hood is available with or
without brush for Ø 125, 150 and 180 mm. (5” - 6” - 7”).
One kit consists of two main parts, an extraction nozzle
and a tool adapter. The unique design allows the nozzle to
efficiently remove the dust without interfearing with the
work. The adapter can hold the nozzle in two positions to
match Ø 180 mm (7”) or Ø 230 mm (9”) grinding wheels.
1) Snap in hood without brush, 125 mm disc. 2) Snap in hood with brush 125
mm disc. 3) Snap in hood with brush 150 mm disc. 4) Snap in hood without
brush 180 mm disc. 5) Snap in hood with brush 180 mm disc.
1) Polyurethane snap-in hood. 2) Dust flow. 3) Rotating disc. 4)
Fixed aluminium manifold.
The other kit consists of three main parts, an aluminium
manifold, a wheel guard and a snap-in plastic hood. There
are a large number of manifolds machined to fit different
tool makes and models. The wheel guard and the snap-in
hood are available for Ø 125 mm (5”) and Ø 180 mm (7”)
grinding wheels.

Capture at source – Mid vacuum solutions
Our new line of mid vacuum systems are designed for
handling light dust and shavings. The ability to adjust the
extraction capacity saves energy and will reduce unnecessary noise. The extraction is integrated on fixed machines
to capture the dust at source, and there are flap valves for
work bench and floor cleaning.
School woodwork or small to medium sized
carpentry workshops
With Nederman Mid-Vacuum systems you will have efficient extraction and always use the correct capacity for the
job avoiding unnecessary noise and saving energy.
- The dust is captured directly at the source with internal
extraction channels or by arms or shrouds
- Cleaning of floors and benches
- Ventilation (option) that will capture airborne
particles over the work bench. This dust is the biggest
environmental problem in these work shops.
Stationary Mid Vacuum Units
The central vacuum unit is useful for
- several simultaneous users
- light material
- voluminous material.
Compact units have collection bin, filter and fan built into
one cabinet to save floor space. The S-series has separate
fan units. If you choose our frequency controlled units
we can adjust the capacity to the actual work situation
automatically. In combination with several sizes on the fan
units you can always find the right solution for your need.
Choosing the correct run mode will save energy, reduce
noise and extend the life of the unit.
User friendly systems - basic technical solutions
with advanced control technology
- Several running modes and fan sizes make it possible to
adjust to your specific needs
- Choose the correct running mode for every type of inlet
and operation to minimize noise.
- Level indicator (option) will stop the unit when the bin is
full.
- Large bin, 240 liters.
- Easy bin handling with the built in carriage, saves time
and gives less spillage when emptying.
- No compressed air needed.
- Automatic filter cleaning.

Accessories for all exhaust systems
Nozzles
There is a full range of Nederman nozzles to suit all types
of vehicles and exhaust extraction systems:
• for single or twin exhaust pipes
• for manual or automatic attachment and disconnection
• with or without CO probes.
Nederman nozzles do not fit tightly onto the exhaust pipe.
This allows ambient air to be sucked in to the hose, which
acts as a coolant and thereby considerably extends its
working life.
Exhaust hoses
Nederman multi-purpose hoses are designed to withstand
mechanical wear and contaminants in diesel and petrol
engine exhaust fumes.
Hoses are available for:
• all types of vehicles
• standard use, up to 150°C
• heavy duty use, up to 300°C or up to 650°C.
See the Nederman Product Catalogue for further details.

Nederman Single/Twin Exhaust Extractor
The Nederman Single/Twin Exhaust
Extractor is ideal for small workshops where an individual solution is
required or where an additional extraction point is needed to expand an
existing system. A damper can be fitted to reduce noise and unnecessary
extraction of air when not in use.
The Single/Twin Exhaust Extractor
can be chosen with
• manual or balancer suspension
equipment
• twin exhaust extractor for adjacent
bays

76
Hose reels have a great advantage in that they can be hoisted completely out of the way when not in use. They can be
installed for single fan extraction or connected to ducting
with a central fan serving a number of units.
Hose reels can be
• operated manually, or electrically via pendant or remote
IR control
• integrated in a gantry handling system with IR control for
out-of-the-way storage
• fitted with a damper to reduce noise and unnecessary extraction of air when not in use
In normal use, hose reel solutions are virtually maintenance-free.

Nederman ALU-FLOWLINE
The Nederman ALU-FLOWLINE Exhaust Extraction System is a fully automatic extraction and hose return system
designed to meet the requirements of vehicle manufacturers and vehicle inspectorates. Vehicles moving along a
manufacturing or inspection line with their engines running
require a system that:
• extracts exhaust fumes continuously
• travels along with the vehicle • is robust and very durable
The ALU-FLOWLINE concept, based on Exhaust Rail System ALU 150, comprises three main parts: the exhaust rail
system, the return track and the control equipment. Extraction units, comprising a trolley and hose, are connected to
the exhaust pipes and travel along with the vehicles. Fumes
are extracted until the nozzles are disconnected, manually
or automatically, at the end of the exhaust rail. The hoses
are then retracted and the extraction units return to their
starting positions via bends and a parallel return track.
ALU-FLOWLINE allows continuous extraction of exhaust
fumes from a flow of vehicles in one direction.

Systems for emergency vehicles
Nederman MagnaSystem solutions
The Nederman MagnaSystem is a series of lightweight and
easy to install exhaust extraction systems designed specifically for emergency vehicles and featuring 100% exhaust
capture. The system can also be used in bus and coach garages if vehicles with similar exhaust positions and anchor
plates always return to the same parking bays. It comprises
two basic variants, MagnaRail and
MagnaTrack.
The MagnaSystem uses an electro-magnet to attach the
exhaust hose and nozzle to the vehicle. When activated,
the electro-magnet attaches to an anchor plate on the
vehicle, holding the nozzle firmly on to the tail pipe. When
leaving the parking bay :
• a radio link (optional) ensures that the extraction fan
starts when the engine is turned on
• the hose unit follows the vehicle as it exits
• at a pre-set disconnection point, the electro-magnet is
deactivated
• the nozzle is then instantly released, preventing stress on
the tail pipe and risk of injuries due to recoil on release.
The fan can be set to run after disconnection to ensure
complete extraction of any remaining exhaust fumes. The
anchor plate is mounted at a convenient height on the
vehicle body enabling nozzle attachment while standing
upright.
An oversized nozzle permits an ambient air mix in the air
stream, immediately reducing the emission temperature
by up to 50 % at the point of capture. This prolongs
component life and prevents burning hazards.
Airflow recommendation: ambulances 600 m³/h, fire
trucks/buses 1000-1200 m³/h.a
The anchor plate is the nozzle attaching point on the vehicle. It is mounted
at a convenient height on the vehicle body enabling you to attach the nozzle
while standing up right. The electro-magnet has an ergonomic handle and
attaches instantly to the anchor plate on the vehicle.
A) The tension of a leaf spring in the hose holds the nozzle firmly to the
exhaust pipe.
B) An oversized nozzle permits an ambient air mix in the air stream
immediately reducing the emission temperature up to 50 % at the point
of capture.
Nederman Pneumatic Track System (PTS)
The system is based on a an expandable nozzle expanded
by compressed air, fixing and sealing the nozzle tightly
round the tail pipe.
PTS is supplied with a choice of two different sized nozzles
to fit the most common types of tail pipes. A quick coupler
makes it easy to interchange the nozzles.
PTS is perfect for stations where vehicles vary from time to
time.

Nederman MagnaStack
MagnaStack is a 100 percent automatic exhaust extraction
system for vertical stacks, based on the same technique
as MagnaTrack. The extraction unit, however, is a hood
enclosure, which automatically connects with the vertical
exhaust stack as the vehicle is backed in to the parking bay.
Guide arms position the laterally adjustable hood to the
stack. The stack is attached to the hood with an electromagnet. As the vehicle moves towards the exit, the horizontal
hose and extraction hood follow smoothly along the guide
track. At the doorway the electric power is automatically
switched off, instantly releasing the exhaust stack from the
hood.
• Capacity: 1 vehicle per system
• Normal speed exit: up to 15 km/h - 10 mph
• Exhaust pipes: vertical stacks
Magna Stack is an exhaust extraction system designed
for vehicles with stacks, i.e. vertical exhaust pipes. Since
the extraction unit operates at a constant height from the
floor the system is normally used in garages etc. where
each vehicle has its own parking place.

Pressure drop, Pa
PTS is suitable for stations where vehicles vary from time
to time. The system is based on a nozzle expanded by compressed air, fixing and sealing the nozzle tightly round the
tail pipe. PTS is supplied with a choice of two different
sized nozzles to fit the most common types of tail pipes. A
quick coupler makes it easy to interchange the nozzles.

Accessories for extended functions
MagnaSystems
A Nederman MagnaSystem can be equipped with a transmitter and radio receiver that starts the exhaust fan when
the vehicle is started. The fan is running two minutes after
the vehicle has departed, which ensures complete extraction
of hazardous exhaust fumes.
Pneumatic Track System (PTS)
A Nederman Pneumatic Track System can be equipped with
either a pressure sensor (that senses the pressure build-up
from the exhaust fumes in the hose) or a radio transmitter
and receiver to start the fan automatically.

Hose and Cable Reels
Workshops and factories always need efficient and reliable
supplies of consumables such as oil, water, air and gas. Our
range of retractable hose reels can be used in all types of
industrial applications – from vehicle lubrication to highpressure washing down in food processing plants. Some
of the models are available in stainless steel and corrosion
resistant versions, specially designed for use in aggressive
environments and where extra demands are made on hygiene and cleanliness. The main advantage of self-retracting
hoses and cables is that they remove the hazardous risks
otherwise encountered when floor spaces get cluttered, a
frequent cause of tripping accidents. They also leave the
floor surfaces free for cleaning. Mechanical damage, caused
by trucks driving over the hoses, falling objects or excessive wear, can also be avoided.
Thanks to our long experience in the field of retractable
reels and hosing materials we can offer:
• A wide range of delivery solutions for liquid and gaseous
consumables
• Reels and hoses that are suitable for all types of working
environments
• Reels and hoses that meet strict hygiene requirements
• High quality equipment that is easy to install, operate and
maintain.
The tables below will help you compare the reels and select
the right one for the application.
