Welcome to Prep Family Sausage Sizzle Principal`s Pen
2nd February 2016 #1 Principal’s Pen Dear Parents, Welcome back to Edge Hill State School for another exciting year of learning. The start to this school year has been as smooth as we would wish. From Day 1 students and teachers have been focussed on getting the school year off to a great start. Teachers have been establishing routines and setting class expectations. Thank you for making sure that your family was ready for school with books and uniforms and of course making sure that home routines are back to normal. I know teachers are looking forward to sharing what will happen this year when Parent Teacher Nights are scheduled over the next few weeks. It is very helpful if you are able to attend the class meetings and we look forward to seeing you. This year we have enrolled 150 Prep students at Edge Hill. Last Thursday we held a Sausage Sizzle to welcome our Preps and their families. Thanks to the P&C for organising this event as well as organising the coffee for Wednesday and Thursday mornings last week. School numbers will be finalised on Friday this week and we expect a total enrolment of 1070 students. A Back to School disco will be held this Thursday evening for students in Year 1-6. Please be patient and tolerant as we all want to keep our students safe. On wet days we need to take even more care as traffic conditions deteriorate. This is a good time of the year to remind your child about road safety. YEAR 3 THURSDAY 11th FEB 5.00PM If your family details (address, telephone contacts, email address, emergency contacts etc) have changed please contact the Office so that we can make sure we have up-to-date information. This is particularly important when your child is unwell and we need to contact you. YEAR 5 THURSDAY 11TH FEB 5.30PM Over the next few newsletters I look forward to sharing with you a number of new initiatives we will introduce this year: our school Sustainability / Kitchen Garden Project, Japanese Immersion Program in Year 1, introducing STEM ( Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), establishing a new art studio, a new Technology and Innovation Centre, and forming a Triathlon squad. 2016 is going to be an exciting year for our school community. STEM News A special thank you to the School and Community for making me feel welcome and a valued part of the Edge Hill Team. I bring experience from my work in Queensland schools and my time spent at NASA’s Space Camp, hence the photo... I am very excited about my role as “STEM Coach”, combining Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, in Prep to Year 6 classrooms. I will be encouraging students to invent, innovate and improve on ideas and give them glimpses of future STEM career paths. I am looking forward to leading the introduction and implementation of the Digital Technologies subject at Edge Hill School. Lastly, but most importantly, I encourage the students to share their ideas when they see me around the school, perhaps at lunchtimes, or maybe when I’m working with the Robotics Group in the Lab. My first major role next week is to introduce myself to the students and to speak about safety, care and responsibility when experimenting, building and discovering.
