June 1, 2010 - May 31, 2011 President: Vice President: Secretary: Treasurer: Directors: Members, Many thanks to all the members who have generously donated to Joe Minotti our Ceiling Fan drive. Ten fans have been purchased and a licensed electrician will install the fans in the very near future. Our first Members & Guests night (aka Lounge Party) was a financial success. The menu was simple, the food was good and everyone had a great time. Future dates will be posted for our members. This month, a special thanks goes to our resident handymen, John LaCorte and Ozzie Gallucio, for fixing our dining room tables and chairs. They worked very hard to accomplish this. Many thanks, also, to Tom Woodward and Roy DiLiberti who repaired our barstools. We can now sit with confidence! Continued special thanks to Director Pete DiGuilio, Tom Woodward and Roy DiLiberti for keeping all our appliances and equipment working properly. Everything in the club is old and in need of constant repair making each day a challenge. We are also indebted to our banquet coordinators, Liz Piettro and Virginia Esposito, for their hard work booking outside functions. And, of course, we thank our Bingo Committee and their never ending commitment to Monday and Tuesday Bingo. The income produced by these two committees is vital to this club. We are blessed to have such a large group of dedicated volunteers who render their time for the good of the club. I hope you all know how much you are appreciated. And to those who have come forward to volunteer at our Festa, we are grateful. Three days in the sun and hot weather – what a sacrifice from our loyal members! Respectfully submitted Anita Sanguinetti for Maria Luke, Secretary P.5 ALPHONSO JOSEPH D’ABRUZZO Surprisingly, the above name person is none other than Alan Alda of “Mash” fame. Alan’s father Alphonso Giovanni Roberto D’Abruzzo was an actor and singer and adopted the name Robert Alda. Alda is a portmanteau of first two letters in Alphonso and the first two letters of D’Abruzzo. Alan’s mother was of Irish descent and her name was Joan Brown, she was also a former Miss New York. Joan gave birth to Alan in January of 1936, seven years later Alan became ill with polio and received the Sister Elizabeth Kenny Treatment regimen. It basically cured him. This system consisted of wrapping the legs in hot woolen blankets and stretching the muscles. It was a very painful treatment. Once recovered, he attended the Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains, New York, from there he went on to Fordham University in the Bronx where he was a student staff member of its FM radio station. In his junior year he studied in Paris; acted in Rome, and performed with his father on television in Amsterdam. After graduation he joined the U.S. Army Reserves and served six months in Korea as a gunnery officer. A year after graduation he married Arlene Weiss, with whom he has three daughters, and now seven grandchildren. The Alda’s have been long time residents of Leonia, New Jersey. In 1972 Alan auditioned for the role of “Hawkeye Pierce” in the TV adaptation of the film “Mash”. He assisted in writing 19 episodes and directed 32 of them. Alan received 21 nominations for Emmy Awards and won five. He was the first person to win Emmy Awards for acting, writing and directing for the same series. The novelist of the book M*A*S*H*, Richard Hooker, did not like Alan’s portrayal of Hawkeye Pierce. Hooker, a Republican, based Hawkeye on himself. Alan, however, was more of the left wing persuasion. The last show in 1983, a 2 ½ hour show, is the single most-watched episode of any TV series. Alan is the only one to have appeared in all 251 episodes. Following his career in “Mash”, Alan has been involved in many political movements. Over the years he appeared on various TV shows, and wrote a number of stories and shows, and acted in, produced, and inspired a number of films and plays. At seventy-four years of age, he is still active.
