Disability Services’ Picnickers Traveled to a Galaxy Far, Far Away
Schaumburg Township Disability
Services took picnickers to a galaxy
far, far away for its 30th annual “Star
Wars” themed picnic Saturday,
Aug. 15. Guests received a surprise
visit from “Star Wars” characters
Darth Vader and a Jedi Warrior.
During lunch, volunteers danced
to a flash mob performance to the
song “Happy.”
Guests also enjoyed musical
entertainment by disc jockey
Eric Brandt and participated in
Brookfield Zoo’s nature and science
activities coordinated by state Reps.
Michelle Mussman and Fred Crespo.
Volunteers served the guests lunch,
which consisted of Village Tavern’s
world famous chicken fingers and
frozen custard desserts that were
donated by Barry Himmelfarb of
Culver’s. After lunch, guests played
bingo for a chance to win one of many
prizes donated by local businesses.

Access Corporation (ITAC), Village
Tavern and Grill, the SchaumburgHoffman Lions Club, Culver’s and the
Schaumburg Township Foundation
sponsored the picnic.

Adopt-a-Family Program
Every year, the Adopt-a-Family program invites caring
residents and businesses to share in the holiday spirit by
“adopting” income-eligible families, seniors and disabled
adults by giving gifts, gift cards or other necessities.
Last year, this program brightened the holiday season
for almost 500 households. If you wish to donate, need
additional information or want to adopt a family this
upcoming holiday season, please contact Diana Nelson at

Children wth Disabilities Have a Thrilling Time at Septemberfest
The village of Schaumburg and Schaumburg Township Disability Services
coordinated complimentary carnival rides for children with disabilities
and their families at Septemberfest Saturday, Sept. 5. Fantasy Amusement’s
owner Bill Johnson sponsored the event for 300
children who attended and enjoyed two hours
of rides on the bumper cars, Ferris wheel and
more. Many families expressed their sincere
gratitude for organizing this special event for
their children and to the carnival staff that
were patient and kind to all. n

Special thanks to the Hoffman Estates Garden
Club, the Schaumburg Garden Club, Local Boy
Scout Troops, District 54 School Gardens and
the neighbors in our community who graciously
gave hundreds of pounds of fresh fruits and
vegetables this past summer season. We would
like to thank all of the gardeners for their hard work and dedication. Fresh
fruits and vegetables in our food pantry were a delicious, healthy option for
our clients. Your commitment and green thumbs were greatly appreciated. n

The Schaumburg Township Employment Support Center was established
to provide guidance and assistance for township residents in job searching,
help with creating or reviewing a resume, filling out job applications or
just guidance on where or how to find work. Computers are available to
search job listings.
In addition to our business hours 9 am to 1 pm every Monday, Tuesday
and Wednesday, the center also offers helpful career seminars scheduled
as follows:
Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 10:30 am – “Developing a Career Portfolio”
Wednesday, Nov. 11 at 10:30 am – “The Hybrid Resume”
Each of these seminars will help you get in contact with the employer and
your goal of re-employment. Preregistration is recommended, as seating

pantry. Amy joined our team in April and we

Veterans Services
Transportation News
Through a grant, the Transportation Department is attaining a new
dispatch software program. There are many changes coming with this new
program. All township residents who are registered with our bus service
will be receiving a call to verify that their information is current.
This is an exciting step for our department! As with any major changes,
there could be some glitches as well as this is a new learning experience for
everyone. We appreciate your patience.
Dispatch accepts reservations for your transportation needs up to 30
days in advance. We are a reservation-based service and time slots fill up
quickly, so please do not wait until the last minute to schedule your ride.
Dispatch is open for reservations from 9:30 am to 4 pm Monday through
Friday. If you have any questions about our services, our dispatchers would

Snow Shoveler Volunteers Needed
This upcoming winter season, become
a snow shoveler volunteer with
Schaumburg Township to help our senior
citizens and people with disabilities with
snow removal. Anyone interested in
volunteering, please call Kim Kettel. We
are also interested in snow removal fees
from companies.
SNAP Application Assistance
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance
Program (SNAP), formerly food stamps,
helps those with limited income
purchase food. A volunteer is available
at the township the first Monday of
each month from 9 to 10 am to assist
applicants in applying for SNAP benefits.
Walk-ins are welcome. Please call the
General Assistance Department for the
list of required documentation before
you apply for SNAP benefits or for
additional information. n
Low Income Home Energy Assistance
Program – LIHEAP
The Low Income Home Energy Assistance
Program (LIHEAP) provides financial
assistance to help those with limited
income pay their utility bills. Eligibility
for this program is based on household
income and size.

residents with disabilities

Please come and volunteer with us to clean up the yards of our township
seniors and people with disabilities Saturday, Oct. 24, from 9 am to 1 pm.
We will meet at Schaumburg Township before heading out to the homes

New to the township, the smoking cessation support
group meets weekly on Thursday at 6:30 pm in room 102. A
certified tobacco treatment specialist from NCH facilitates
this group.

The diabetes support group meets twice a month on the second and
fourth Wednesday at 10:30 am in room 102. Please join our lively group
for new ideas and encouragement.
Pregnancy and Infant Loss Northwest Suburban Support Group
The pregnancy and infant loss Northwest Suburban support group meets

Kenneth Young Center

The Kenneth Young Center (KYC) offers an
array of services to youth and families requiring
intervention. The KYC staff helps children
and adolescents who are experiencing crises,
depression, severe emotional disturbances or
other mental health concerns. By providing
assessments, mentoring, individual counseling
and group therapy, the KYC staff is able to help
children and their families overcome obstacles
and thrive.
KYC has a long-standing mentoring program
in place for severely at-risk youth. Additionally,
family sessions along with group therapy are
commonly used as part of the treatment plan.
KYC caseworkers realized that dealing with a child who
has severe emotional and behavioral problems could be
overwhelming for parents/caregivers. Many parents feel
defeated as they attempt to navigate through accessing
information and resources. In response to this, a parent
mentoring program was developed.
Parent Mentoring is a one-on-one, appointment based
service within a developed treatment plan, driven by a
therapist. These appointments occur in the home and
places in the community, such as a coffee shop or library.
In addition to learning important information about their
child’s illness and how to access the best community
resources, parents learn how to set healthy boundaries
with their children.

spans eight weeks. KYC has bilingual
facilitators who help bridge the language and
cultural barriers some families face. During
the program, parents work with a KYC staff
member to set reward and consequence charts
as well as identify appropriate boundaries.
These groups are held at KYC offices in Elk
Grove Village and Schaumburg. In April 2015,
KYC expanded its parent support services
to include a special peer support group for
parents. This type of peer mentoring offers
firsthand personal support and guidance to
families. This includes encouraging self-care,
offering one-on-one support, advice on
overcoming obstacles, sharing of information and various
community resources. Parents are also able to interact
and build a relationship with an empathetic peer who
shares a similar experience. The Parent to Parent group
meets once per month and is ongoing. Parent to Parent is
currently offered at the Mount Prospect location but, may
extend to KYC’s other locations in the future.
Parent support programs have many benefits. Parents
realize that they are not alone and are encouraged to
care for themselves, which helps them to provide better
care for their child. Furthermore, they learn how to be an
advocate for their child and themselves.

Free Prescription Discount Card
Schaumburg Township residents may
be able to save money on prescriptions,
lab work and imaging tests with the free
Coast2Coast Rx prescription discount
card. The Coast2Coast card is available
to all township residents—even those who have
health insurance—and offers discounts on over
60,000 prescription drugs. Most major chain and
independent pharmacies accept the card, which can
save residents up to 65 percent on brand name and
generic drugs. The card may even offer better pricing
than certain health insurance plans; residents should
compare pricing even if they have insurance.
Other benefits the card offers: No expiration date,
good for pet prescriptions when filled at the pharmacy
and anyone can use it as often as needed. Stop by the
township to pick up the card or visit coast2coastrx.com
to download and print the Township of Schaumburg
card. The Coast2Coast Rx card is not insurance and is
not intended to replace insurance.

Fall is the time of year when
we see the leaves changing
colors, enjoy cool, crisp
evenings around the fire
pit and watch football
games under the lights. Fall
is here, but winter and the
snow are not far behind.
The Road and Bridge
Department has noticed
boulders that are placed
too close to the street in
the unincorporated area,
which could be a potential hazard to both our snowplow
drivers and the equipment. If a snowplow blade hits a
boulder, it could potentially damage the snowplow.
We encourage you to relocate them before the freezing
temperatures and snow arrives.
Shoveling, snowplowing or blowing snow from your
driveway into the street is a dangerous traffic hazard for
your neighbors and emergency responders. Drive safely
during a snowstorm, stay back from snow plowing
equipment and keep a sharp lookout for road crews.
Please give our snowplow drivers plenty of distance so
that they can clear and treat the roads. Give yourself
plenty of time to reach your destination. Arriving at
home 10 minutes later is better than not arriving at all.
Our department receives calls regarding potholes, removal
of dead animals and driveways plowed shut. Generally,
these calls are for other jurisdictions. Please call your city
or village public works department if you do not live in
unincorporated Schaumburg Township.
There are a number of roads within Schaumburg Township
that other local government agencies are responsible
for clearing the streets of snow and ice. In the village of
Schaumburg, the red-colored trucks plow incorporated
village streets; the Illinois Department of Transportation
(IDOT) has orange-colored trucks that are responsible for
plowing state designated highways (e.g., Route 19); Cook
County uses the green-colored trucks to plow county
highways (e.g., Schaumburg Road); Schaumburg Township
has white-colored trucks that are responsible for plowing
unincorporated areas of the township.
Have a wonderful fall and remember that whatever
the case, the only bad question is the one not asked. n

Appeals
Schaumburg Township opened for appeals at the end of
Aug. and closed Sept. 21. If you missed the appeal period
with the Cook County Assessor, you still have time to
file an appeal with the Cook County Board of Review
sometime before the end of this year. Both the Cook
County Assessor and the Board of Review allow 30 days
to file an appeal. Contact the Board of Review’s office in
Rolling Meadows at (847) 818-2067 or the downtown
Chicago office at (312) 603-5542 for their appeal dates for
Schaumburg Township. If your appeal is successful, it will
reflect on your 2016 second installment property tax bill.
Once the second installment of the property tax bill is
mailed out, it is too late to file an appeal for that tax bill.
Cook County will be reassessing Schaumburg Township
next year in 2016, which is our next triennial. Look
for your notice in the mail in late summer 2016. The
reassessment year is the best time to appeal because if
your assessment is lowered, it will benefit you for the
next three years of your property tax bills in 2016, 2017
and 2018.
Tax Bills and Payments
The Cook County Treasurer’s office mails out tax
bills and collects payments; the last property tax
bill payment was due Aug. 3, 2015, and the next bill
payment will be due Mar. 1, 2016. For a copy of your
bill and/or payment information, please contact the
Cook County Treasurer’s office at (312) 443-5100 or visit
www.cookcountytreasurer.com.

Mobile Dental Services
In collaboration with Northwest Community Healthcare, Schaumburg
Township offers dental services to residents who are without dental insurance
and have income at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level. Dental
services include preventive treatment, simple restorations, fillings, extractions
and oral health education. Please contact the General Assistance Department
to apply or for additional information. n

To register to vote, you must be a U.S. citizen, at least
18 years of age by the general election and a resident
of your precinct at least 30 days before Election Day.
You also must display two of the following supporting
documents. Neither needs to be a photo ID, but one
must include your current address. Acceptable forms of

Community Shred & Electronics Recycling Day
Saturday, Nov. 7, 9 am – 12 pm
Schaumburg Township Parking Lot

Schaumburg Township is hosting a Community Shred and Electronics
Recycling Day Saturday, Nov. 7, from 9 am – 12 pm. This free event is
available to Schaumburg Township residents only; businesses cannot
participate. Paper shredding is limited up to four boxes/bags (1 cubic
feet or 15" x 12" x 10") per car. Paper clips, staples and rubber bands do
not need to be removed. Electronics recycling will accept computer/
IT equipment, cell phones, batteries, small appliances and home and
office electronics. Other items, such as light bulbs and string/holiday
lighting are not accepted. There is a $35 disposal charge for tube TVs
and a $10 charge for CRT monitors.
