In April 2013, the world was rocked by the Boston Marathon
bombings and on Monday, May 20, 2013, tragedy struck again in
the form of an EF5 tornado that swept through Moore, Oklahoma
and surrounding suburbs, destroying at least five schools in its
path, killing at least 24 and injuring hundreds of others.
What does all this have to do with the Kalamazoo Klassic? Now
celebrating its 35th year, the Kalamazoo Klassic has experienced its
share of trials and tribulation over the three and half decades it has
been in existence, yet has persevered as one of the most prestigious
races in greater Kalamazoo. As you step back in time and read
through the history of the Kalamazoo Klassic, the early roots of our
running community, as well as historical moments in Kalamazoo
and even national history are reflected throughout.

When the gun sounded for the first Kalamazoo Klassic at
precisely 8:57 a.m. on June 30, 1979, 650 runners sprinted off
on a 10-kilometer course of what is now the oldest running event
in Kalamazoo.
Twenty-five years later, on June 21, 2003, hundreds of runners
celebrated a quarter century of success by gathering yet again for
competition and personal pleasure on the top of Maple Street
hill for another sounding of the classic Klassic gun. Many things
have remained unchanged since 1979: Maple Street Hill, allvolunteer sponsorship by the local running club, and the
excitement of the field. But many things have changed: the
addition of the 5K run, electronic timing (the “chip”), the finish
in South Middle School Fields, and the increasing number of
women and older runners.

AGILITY PHYSICAL THERAPY
In the late 70’s the Kalamazoo Track Club was a collection of
about 25 serious runners whose focus was training and racing
competitively. At the same time the running boom for the
average person was sweeping the nation in the wake of Frank
Shorter’s Olympic Marathon win in 1976 and the popularity of
Jim Fixx’s best-selling book “The Complete Runner." Joggers
were everywhere. With this backdrop, a few members of the
Track Club, with Blaine Lam as their spokesperson, proposed
that the club pursue a new direction: “Embrace the average
runner.” The critical vote on the new direction was 13 to 12 in
favor of the change and the stage was set for the birth of the
Kalamazoo Klassic.
The renovated club, with David Kays as President and Blaine
Lam as Vice President/Newsletter editor, captured the local
running community with its calendar of regular races, an
informative newsletter, and the idea of sponsoring a major road
race to be called the Kalamazoo Klassic. The first race was run
“on a shoestring,” Lam says. “There was minimal sponsorship
(Lee’s Sports was the main sponsor) and the scoring was done
with 3×5 cards.”

BRONSON ATHLETIC CLUB
The 1979 Klassic resulted in a tie between WMU teammates Tom
Duits and Bob Lewis in 30:58. Tom Duits is known as the first
Michigander to run a sub 4:00 mile and still holds the mile
record at WMU.
The 80s
In May 1980 a tornado ravaged downtown Kalamazoo, killing
five people and causing millions of dollars in damage. The
second Klassic was run a little more than a month later as
Kalamazoo recovered from this blow of nature. The race date
was moved to June 14, with the field capped at 1000 – and easily
filled. First National Bank signed on as a major sponsor, a role
that it played for many years. The year 1980 was also the debut
of the turtle, a graphic T-shirt mascot that appeared off and on in
different forms for most of the years of the Klassic. The front
page of the Saturday Gazette had three pictures of the Klassic
and described the day as “threatening sky and rolling thunder.”
But as we know, that doesn't deter runners.
Beginning January 1, 2013, KAR members may
join Bronson Athletic Club for a $199 initiation fee
, a deep discount off the regular initiation fee of
$395, and receive the first month primary
membership dues free. For more information on

The Turtle, first making its appearance as mascot in 1980, reappears on and off
throughout the years. The turtle has returned to help us celebrate the 35 th
anniversary of the Kalamazoo Klassic.
The third Klassic (1981) grew to 1,323 participants and witnessed
the return of the winners of the first Klassic. Duits and Lewis
repeated their feat by finishing together in a time of 30:19. The
women’s race was won by WMU's Darcy Tomlinson in a very fast
35:27. Kalamazoo has always been the home of excellent Masters
runners as shown by the finishes of Randy Hoffman (33:05) and
Tina Hayward (39:20). Tina would go on to win the Boston

Marathon Masters a few years later. The 1981 race was held on
the 3rd Saturday of the month, setting a tradition followed since.
Many dedicated KTC members nurtured the race in these early
years. Blaine Lam was consistently a driving force. Tom Powell,
James and Linda Gregart, and Dave Mackey were heavily
involved in the growth of the race. The fields were generally over
1,000, with hundreds of finishers under 40 minutes. In 1983 a
40:00 time would not have broken into the top 200 places.
The race has not been without its tragedies. In 1982, Richard
Robbins, 49, collapsed 200 yards from the finish line as he was
ascending Peeler Hill. Within seconds he was being treated by
paramedics, but died a few days later.
When two local runners, Chris Crowell and Bruce Johnson,
formed Gazelle Sports, they began a long and continuing
relationship with the Klassic. In 1988 Gazelle Sports started their
sponsorship of the Kids’ Klassic, a 1K Kids’ run on the evening
before the 10K (which had been started by the KTC about 4 years
earlier.) Hundreds of kids and parents line up every year for this
fun family event. Several of the top runners in high school the
last few years had their first experience running at the Kid’s
Klassic including Adriana Field and Jessie Stewart who both ran
for the University of Michigan.

In 1985 the 5K race was added. Five-K races were gaining in
popularity and the new distance was added to attract joggers who
were not yet ready to tackle Maple Street Hill, better known as
Kalamazoo's ‘Heart Break Hill.’
In 1987 the finish was moved from the top of Peeler Street to the
fields at South Junior High. The move allowed more room for
spectators and post-race activities.
The 90s
In 1996 and in 1997 the 10K event was eliminated. Entries for
the longer race had been decreasing and expenses to stage the
race had been increasing. For 2 years the 5K was the only event.
On the eve of the 1997 Klassic a ferocious storm swept through
southwest Michigan. Many trees were down, many homes were
without power, and many events in the region were cancelled…
except, of course, the Klassic, which went off without a hitch in
humid weather.

In 1998 the 10K was reinstated by popular demand for the 20th
Anniversary of the Klassic. Although the 10K still does not have
as many participants as the 5K, it remains the essence of the
‘Klassic.’ This was also the first year the “chip” (a device the size
of a quarter that is laced onto the shoe) was used to facilitate
timing.

As June 19, 2010 approached, the stage was set for an
extraordinary 2010 Kalamazoo Klassic. The 10k had been
selected as the RRCA National Championship and the 5k the
RRCA State Championship. The Klassic was also proclaimed an
Olympic Day event and the 10k was included in the Michigan
Runner race series. Jean Knaack, the Executive Director from
RRCA flew in from Virginia to run the 10k. In honor of Olympic
Day and the RRCA Championship designations, 1988 Seoul
Olympian (20k Race Walk) and RRCA State Representative Gary
Morgan was scheduled to make a special guest appearance as
well.
Shortly after the last child crossed the finish line of Friday
evening’s Kid’s Klassic, dark storm clouds approached the
Kalamazoo Klassic expo grounds at the Kalamazoo Free
Methodist Church. Volunteer crews worked quickly to collapse
the 10 x 10 tents and tables scattered throughout the exhibit area
in a race against Mother Nature and the approaching storm.

Thankfully, most of the children had gone, and the few remaining
were those working the event. Just as the last tent was folded, a
storm producing 70 mph winds and heavy rains pounded the site.
Most took shelter in the church, which lost power within minutes.
It is often said history never repeats itself, but the Klassic seemed to
be the exception to the rule as the staging of the 2010 Kalamazoo
Klassic was strangely reminiscent of the 1997 Kalamazoo Klassic 13
years earlier. The stormed that pummeled the area that year left
many downed trees, homes without power and cancelled events, yet
the Klassic went on.
Fast forward back to 2010, a group from the organizing team
braved the elements and drove the ¼ mile down to the magnet
school field, only to find the large rented tents and finish line
scaffolding leveled by the winds. The decision was made to leave
the remaining 10 x 10 tents and tables up at the church, and bring
them down early the following morning. After the winds and rains
subsided, I left for home and decided to drive part of the course and
assess damage. My race day assignment, along with that of our new
shadow director Wendy Sosville, was to place the mile markers and
clear the course of debris. About ¼ mile up Bronson Boulevard,
traffic was forced to a standstill – a tree had fallen from the cliffs on
the west side, landing across the entire road. After scrambling to
determine if there was a way to divert the course and if the tree
would be removed, we were able to confirm the tree would be gone
in time for the race.
The next morning, volunteer crews were transporting tents and
tables down to the soggy fields long before the crack of dawn. Cindi
and Steve MacDonald rebuilt the scaffolding which had collapsed
the night before while the rest of the crew set up clusters of 10 x 10
tents to replace the large ones leveled by the winds. Wendy and I
set out to place the mile markers and clear the course of the debris
that had fallen the night before. We finished just 30 minutes prior
to the 10k start. Runners were already starting to gather at the top
of Maple Hill.

Several participants have made the Klassic a part of their lives for
25 years. Dick Hoeskstra ran the first Klassic in 1979 as a high
schooler. Since then Dick has finished all 23 Klassic 10Ks and the
5K for the two years the 10K was not offered. Dave Dunn has also
participated in all 25 races. Dave ran the 1979 race as a high
schooler and continued to race the Klassic during his years at WMU
where he ran track. His best time at the Klassic was 32:18 in 1984. A
chronic back injury ended his running career in 1993 but he
returned as a Race Walker and has won the Klassic 5K Walk three
times. Patsy Hand was talked into running the first Klassic by a
friend. Since then she has participated every year despite forgotten
numbers and torn ligaments. Patsy, Dave and Dick were presented
25 Year Commemorative Jackets at the 25th Klassic Race Awards
Ceremony.

Leadership Team Appointments and
Changes
Kalamazoo Area Runners is pleased to announce the following
leadership team appointments.
Scott Everett has been appointed as Director of the Wednesday
Night Runs from the Portage YMCA with Teresa Redmond.
Scott is replacing Pat and Sherri Enlow, who had to temporarily
relocate to Georgia to care for a family member. Since thanks to
Scott for filling this leadership position.
We wish Pat and Sherri Enlow a fond farewell. Pat and Sherri
had to relocate to George for an undetermined period of time to care
for family. Pat and Sherri have served as directors of the
Wednesday evening runs from the Portage YMCA for the last year,
and served on the 2013 Beyond committee with responsibility for
the half marathon component of the program. In the year they
served on the KAR leadership team they demonstrated tremendous
commitment and dedication, and will be greatly missed. We wish
both Pat and Sherri the very best, and hope that they eventually may
be able to return to Kalamazoo some day in the future. As a side
note, they are visiting Kalamazoo this week, and will be making an
appearance at the May 29 Wednesday night run at the Portage
YMCA.

Running Community News
GET YOUR COLON ROLLIN’ 5K WALK/RUN
June 1st Bailey Park, Battle Creek
The Calhoun County Cancer Control Coalition (5C) is a group of individuals and organizations
working together to reduce the cancer burden in Calhoun County through community collaboration.
This year they have decided to host the first Get Your Colon Rollin’ 5K walk/run on June 1, 2013 to
spread the word about getting screened for colorectal cancer.
The registration fee is $25 if registered on or before May 18, 2013, after that registration is $30 (nonrefundable). Registration can be done online at www.calhouncancer.org or call (269) 339-5016 to
have a form faxed or mailed to you. Scholarships are available. If you would like to participate but
are unable to afford the registration fee, please call (269) 339-5016.
This event will take place at Bailey Park in Battle Creek along the Linear Park Path. Registration
starts at 7:00 am and will end promptly at 8:45 am. (This is necessary for an on-time start.) Race
starts at 9:00am and award ceremony is at 10:15am. Awards are given for first place overall male
and female as well as first, second and third place in each division. T-shirts are guaranteed to
everyone that registers by May 18th. No-shows will not receive a T-shirt; t-shirts not claimed will be
distributed to race day registrants following the race on a first come-first served basis.
Did You Know…
 Anyone can get colorectal cancer.
 Colorectal cancer screening is recommended for everyone at age 50. (Those who have a
family history of colorectal cancer should ask their doctor about getting screened earlier than
age 50.)
 Colorectal polyps and colorectal cancer don't always cause symptoms, especially at first.
Someone could have polyps or colorectal cancer and not know it. That is why getting
screened regularly for colorectal cancer is so important.
 Screening for colorectal cancer helps prevent this disease. Screening can find precancerous
polyps (abnormal growths), so they can be removed before they turn into cancer. Screening
also finds colorectal cancer early, when treatment works best.
If you have any questions, please contact Jenny Rogers at 269-339-5016 or

Xtreme New Brand of Obstacle Racing Launches Clear of Mud –
Coming to Battle Creek August 24, 2013
Established Race Director Sommer Sports Creates Outrageous Challenges
Sommer Sports, a triathlon and running race company just outside of Orlando, FL, is launching the
http://www.xtremeobstaclechallenge.com/Home.aspxXtreme Obstacle Challenge, an urban obstacle
challenge with more than 25 obstacles including some super fun, larger than life creations
They are bringing the event to Battle Creek August 24th and are also looking for obstacle race lovers
who would be interested in a paid, part-time position as brand ambassadors for the race.
An informal open house is being held at When/Where: Wednesday, May 29, 2013, 5:30-7:30pm at
the meeting room Hampton Inn Marshall at 17256 Sam Hill Drive, Marshall, MI 49068 (phone 269789-0131).
CLERMONT, Fla. (May 22, 2013) – Sommer Sports revolutionizes the obstacle industry with the
Xtreme Obstacle Challenge, an urban race designed to challenge competitors with tough but fun
obstacles. Xtreme urges racers to wipe off the mud and take on their more than 25 high-energy
obstacles with featured larger than life challenges throughout course. The inaugural event takes place
Saturday, June 29, 2013, at Sun 'n Fun in Lakeland, FL, with events in Michigan and Alabama
announced for later this year.
“We’re most excited about our iconic Dizzy Lizzy challenge,” chuckled Fred Sommer, founder and
president of Sommer Sports. “If racers make it to end of what may be the world’s longest treadmill,
they face Dizzy Lizzy's large, quickly rotating, slanted spiral turntable. The race will no doubt be won
or lost on this challenge, and it's guaranteed to produce some laughs.”
Other crazy obstacles include Cubic Conundrum, Matrix, Barrel Roll, and more that lead to a
dynamic, elevated fight to the finish line.
The course is designed to test physical and mental toughness that can’t be conquered with strength
alone. To add to the entertainment, Xtreme always welcomes spectators free of charge.
Competitive waves are eligible to win the $2,500 purse and age group awards. Participants are
encouraged to tackle the challenge in teams and race in costume for the chance to win prizes.
In addition to Xtreme race support, all participants receive an event T-shirt, chip timing and an
Xtreme finisher’s medal. The race touts a memorable post-race party with plenty of food and drink
coupons, live entertainment and a healthy exchange of bragging rights.
Founded in 1984, Sommer Sports is involved in more than 40 participatory athletic events annually
in Clermont and beyond. More information about the Xtreme Obstacle Challenge can be found at

Stay tuned for our next “Featured Member” story in the June edition of The
Rundown!
Everyone has a story. Stay tuned next month for another runner’s story. As a writer and a writing
teacher my philosophy is that everyone has a story. If you know of a KAR member whose experiences
would make a good running story please contact me at [email protected] with a
brief synopsis of their story. Please contact this individual prior to contacting me to make sure that they
are fine with me writing an article about them. Also include the individuals contact information.
