But a replay, called after the NASCAR Wrap Up tire got away from his crew with about 50 laps left, saved Edwards from a costly penalty. It kept him in third place after a pit stop instead of around 20th. From there, the 28year-old drove past the leaders and into the Las Vegas sunset, winning in dominating fashion for the second time in less than a week. He celebrated with his traditional backflip and served notice that fans may see many more before the season is over. The championship belt and Edwards’ spot on top of the point standings, may be temporary. His No. 99 car had a problem getting through inspection as the lid on the oil reservoir encasement was off, which could have given Edwards a slight aerodynamic advantage. NASCAR officials impounded the car and will take it back to the Research & Development Center in North Carolina before determining what, if any, penalties to enforce. Five Nationwide cars were penalized for similar infractions at Daytona. But for now, Edwards is a winner. He did it despite wandering tires, which are a big NASCAR no-no. Edwards’ crew had two of them get away during Sunday’s UAW-Dodge The Conservative Weekly Voice Of Las Vegas Inside: Media Scared To Question Obama See Editorial Page 6 400. The first one cost Edwards a penalty as he had to drop back to the end of the longest line early in the race. The second one didn’t cost Edwards anything once NASCAR took a look at instant replay. A cameraman, who Fox announcers were quick to point out it wasn’t one of their guys, got in the way of the crew member charged with catching the tire as it hit the wall. He couldn’t make the grab and the tire bounced off and kept rolling. “The crew member that was supposed to catch it told me right away what happened,” Edwards’ crew chief Bob Osborne said. “When you think that you didn’t actually break a rule, you’ve got to keep a level head. I wanted to go ballistic for sure and yell and scream and kick and punch. But the officials were good in the situation, reviewed the film and made a judgment call in Penny Wisdom Buy the ticket take the Ride —Hunter S. Thompson our favor.” Edwards did the rest with a superior Ford Fusion. He quickly got in front and stayed there, despite numerous cautions and a 17-minute red-flag delay. Edwards made sure Dale Earnhardt Jr. didn’t get a big run on the final restart, crossing the line well in front. “We are close to the form that we were in 2005 when it seemed like a Roush Fenway car would win every week,” Edwards said. “That’s what I’m excited about.” Back then, Edwards’ first full season at the Cup level, he won four times and was third in the standings. Many Vegas bookies probably made him a good bet to contend annually for championships. But Edwards didn’t win in 2006 and didn’t make a backflip again until last June. Jack Roush admitted that he didn’t test the car enough and fell behind some of the other power teams. However, late last season Roush’s famous Panama hat made some more appearances in Victory Lane as Edwards, Matt Kenseth and Greg Biffle won races during the Chase. Edwards has won three times _ all in the new car _ in the last 12 races, dating to last season, and has six top 5s in that span. He’s won twice in Atlanta, where the series heads this weekend. “I think that we’re caught up,” Roush said. “I don’t think we have an advantage, but on any given Sunday 20 cars can win and 4 or 5 of those are ours.” Sunday’s results prove Roush’s point. The team had three cars in the top 10, including Biffle’s third-place finish. Kenseth, too, was near the front most of the day and was battling Edwards for the lead with five laps to go when Jeff Gordon slid up the track and clipped him. That ended Kenseth’s chances, though he still managed to finish 20th. The victory puts Edwards on top of the point standings for the first time in his career. It’s a spot Roush is used to occupying. Now comes the hard part: Hanging on to the lead by escaping inspection penalties. His crew already knows it can help by hanging on to the tires. Remember 2 months ago, when all the GOP candidates made immigration one of their top issues? So, what happened? The GOP selected Mr. Amnesty as its candidate. Boeing failed, after spending tens of millions of dollars, to build a virtual fence on the Mexican border. And America’s youth fell in love with an untested politician from Chicago. What about the immigration issue? It is buried for 2008. The sad fact is our government does not want a real fence, for it would work. The Bush Administration wants cheap labor for its business supporters and it uses illegal immigration as a relief valve for the autocrats who run Mexico. The real issue is illegal immigration, not legal immigration. Until we are willing to stop illegal immigration, there will be no support for an overall reform of immigration policy that works to the benefit of the people of this nation. The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) has proposed a set of seven principles that should guide immigration reform. Hopefully, the next President and The Penny Press Tips Its Cap To: The Clark County, City of Las Vegas, Henderson and North Las Vegas officials who moved rather quickly to shut down the various clinics owned by Doctor Dipak Desai after one was found to be reusing syringes and vials of anesthetic drugs, a serious breach of medical practice. Over 40,000 patients were potentially exposed to various strains of Hepatitis because of the practice. Clark County lawyer Kermitt Waters, who filed two petitions Monday to let voters decide whether to repeal a law that has prevented him and the state teachers union from circulating petitions to increase the gaming tax. The Penny Press Sends A Bronx Cheer And A Bouquet of Weeds To: R & R Partners, the advertising agency which we paid to give us "What Happens In Vegas Stays In Vegas" for being such whores that they took on as an account the various clinics which were shut down by the local governments for medical malpractice so they could get paid to spin this somehow. If they need the money so bad, surely they could find people to represent who don't openly defend medical malpractice. Congress will adhere to these guidelines and come forth with real immigration reform. The FAIR principles are: First Principle: Cut the Numbers Any level of illegal immigration is unacceptable, and current legal immigrant admissions of about one million persons each year are entirely too many. Second Principle: No Amnesty or Mass Guest-Worker Program The 1986 amnesty was a failure; rather than reducing illegal immigration, it led to an increase. Any new amnesty measure will further weaken respect for our immigration law. Third Principle: Protect U.S. Wages and Standards of Living Immigration policy should not be permitted to undermine opportunities for America’s poor and vulnerable citizens to improve their working conditions and wages. The current system accepts selfserving attestations of employers who seek lower labor costs as protections of American workers. Fourth Principle: Major Upgrade in Interior Enforcement, Led by Strong Employer Penalties Employers who knowingly employ unauthorized workers are the magnet that attracts illegal entry into the U.S. These employers are complicit in the illegal alien cartel activity of smuggling, trafficking, harboring, and employing and must be punished. Fifth Principle: Stop Special Interest Asylum Abuse Reforming the refugee and asy- lum system means returning to the original purpose and definition of the program: any person who... is unable or unwilling to return to, and is unable or unwilling to avail himself or herself of the protection of that country because of persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.... America must honor it responsibilities to protect people who are fleeing true political persecution as defined by U.S. and international law. Treating aliens illegally residing in the country the same as foreigners on legal visitor visas for purposes of the Temporary Protected Status designation is illogical and a form of amnesty that must be ended. Sixth Principle: Immigration Time Out We must restore moderation to legal immigration. Beginning with the recommendations of the Jordan Commission in 1995, we need to restrict immigration to the minimum consistent with stabilizing the U.S. population. Seventh Principle: Equal Under the Law There should be no favoritism toward or discrimination against any person on the basis of race, color, creed, or nationality. A balanced approach to immigration reform, based on such principles, is likely to attract the support of a majority of American voters. Media Scared To Death Of Obama It used to be that the third rail of American politics was Social Security. Because, for the most part, they are afraid of being called racists. For those folks who grew up in what folks in New York and Washington sneeringly call “flyover” country, that name comes from the third rail of New York’s subway system which supplies electricity to the motors. Touch it and you are dead. Here’s another story the media seems to have missed, for the most part. And that was the way politicians treated Social Security. Touch it and you are dead. Today, the third rail of American politics is race. The mainstream media—which is usually defined as all national media excluding Fox News Channel—is so afraid of Barack Obama that they were willing to throw their prior media darling, Hillary Clinton under the bus. In doing so, that collective group of geniuses has completely ignored the fact that Obama is just another pol from the Chicago machine who has associated with some fairly scummy characters on his way to his current state of beatification. He is “friendly” with former SDS Weatherman Willliam Ayres, by the admission of his own campaign staff. I would suppose that is OK with the 18 to 30 year old set which thinks the two-year Senator is a candidate for American Idol, but those of us who are old enough to remember the SDS Weathermen remember that they bombed the Pentagon, the New York Police Department Headquarters and in 2001, after 9-11, Ayres said that he wished there had been more bombing. Friendly means, among other things that Obama was on the same panel with Ayres in a 2002 conference sponsored partially by the University of Illinois—Chicago. Now, serving on the same panel, which discussed the topic “Intellectuals in Times of Crisis”, is, of itself, not a disqualification to become President. But it’s not like Ayres is the kind of friend or advisor you want your next President to have. Yet I defy you to count the column inches of space or the number of minutes on the evening news devoted to this connection in the national media which has been pimping for Obama. It took no less than Ann Coulter—who is endorsing Hillary Clinton to show her disgust with the GOP candidate—to point out that the mainstream media is covering Hillary like a Republican and Obama like, well, Bill Clinton. Why? Prominent black Democrats who have been long time supporters of Clinton have been under enormous pressure from Obama surrogates to endorse Obama. Many of them have caved. Others have not. It would seem fair to point out that nobody in the Clinton campaign is going to white women and trying the same tactic. Have you read about any of that in the mainstream media? Of course not. Virtually no major media outlet has bothered to mention that Obama has virtually no experience doing anything save making flowery speeches. Clinton is starting to fight back on her own, but she’s swimming upstream. I’m not a fan of Hillary Clinton. But it is time to admit that unless Ross Perot can enter a time machine and come back as a 65-year-old, no matter which viable candidate wins this election, we’re going to have a liberal in the White House from at least 2009 to 2012. So it would seem that the question the mainstream media should be asking in the Democratic race is how can a man who has virtually no experience in governing anything, become the President and Commander in Chief? Who is he going to consult in the war on terror? William Ayres? Bernardine Dohrn? Patty Hearst? What are his real views on race relations? His church’s leader has some views which are reminiscent of Malcolm X. One of Martin Luther King’s close associates has said recently that Malcolm X once passed a message to King to tell people that they better deal with King lest they have to deal with Malcolm X. Is there anybody passing such a message to Obama? Why can’t the mainstream media at least ask those questions without fear of touching that third rail. They would certainly be much more brave if the Republicans had nominated J.C. Watts or Clarance Thomas for President. FRED WEINBERG THE PENNY PRESS, MARCH 6, 2008 PAGE 7 Commentary: Gary David Goldberg WWAKD (What Would Alex Keaton Do) It’s been almost twenty years since Family Ties went off the air. And, Alex P. Keaton’s political idols Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan have each gone off to their deserved places in history. Yet I still get asked a lot, well okay maybe not a lot but more than twice, whether Alex P. Keaton would be a Republican today. And, if so, who would be his candidate in the 2008 presidential election? Before I go any further I should point out that I’m a registered Independent. I vote Democratic most of the time but not always. And, I am part of the 75% of Americans who strongly disapprove of the job George Bush has done as President of our United States. I should also point out that in order to properly represent Alex and his political point of view I, as well as the rest of the Family Ties writers, did a great deal of research on this subject. And during that time I developed a very healthy respect for the true conservative point of view. A powerful and proud strain of American political thought. And, even today I bow to no one in my desire to see the capital gains tax eliminated. Alex Keaton was a true conservative Republican. He was for limited government. He was strongly against government involvement in the personal lives of its citizens. He was competent and capable. The ultimate over-achiever. But, above all Alex Keaton was a firm believer in the power of ideas. The true conservative belief in the competitive marketplace of intellectual discourse. Where the best ideas win – usually Alex’s. And, so it’s difficult to recognize in this current incarnation of the Republican party, a party whose legacy will include Terri Schiavo and Hurricane Katrina, a place where Alex Keaton might feel the least bit comfortable. Alex was smart. Real smart. And, proud of it. He also believed deeply in the power of science. And, the free exchange of scientific ideas. Uncensored. Unfettered by excessive government regulation. Not stifled by religious orthodoxy. Not re-written by political hacks with no academic or scientific credentials. So, it’s hard to picture Alex in a party which seems to be waging war against science. And, where their presidential candidates seem comfortable debating whether or not the earth is round. On the other hand, I can’t see Alex easily voting for a Democrat. Alex was loyal. I think his natural inclination would have been to go for John McCain. But, that would have been John McCain in 2000, when he was still talking straight: Jerry Falwell was an agent of intolerance. And, waterboarding is torture. McCain going back on those two key points would have certainly kept Alex from pulling the lever for him now. I think Ron Paul’s message is one that would resonate with Alex. And, he would appreciate Paul’s intellectual power, and his willingness to state his positions unequivocally and without regard to which way the political winds were blowing. I think he’d really like Huckabee’s ideas of getting rid of the IRS. (I know I do.) But, ultimately Alex likes to win and I think that would have kept him from fully committing to either of those guys. Hillary Clinton? I have to disclose that I’ve known Hillary Clinton for 20+ years. I think she’s a warm, funny and caring person of formidable intelligence. And, I admire her greatly. And, I would love to be able to say that Alex would vote for her. But, I don’t think I believe that it could happen. If he did vote for her it would have to be a “very special” episode of Family Ties, indeed. So, what about Barack Obama then? I honestly don’t know. I think Alex is an Independent now. And, certainly as deeply engaged in politics as ever. He would be intrigued by Obama. Impressed with his eloquence and his intelligence. Unhappy with his plan to tax the wealthy at a higher rate. But, keenly aware that eight years of neglect and corruption and no-bid contracts have to somehow be overturned. And, I think Obama’s slogan is very similar to Alex’s own personal mantra – “Of Course I Can.” I think that Alex might just be ready to take a chance. Might just. I can picture him stepping into the voting booth, closing the curtain behind him, taking a very deep breath and then for the first time in his life putting his hand up to the Democratic party lever. He touches it tentatively, trying to get comfortable. Takes his hand off. Puts it back. He grasps the lever firmly now. Squeezes it. And, as he’s about to pull we FADE OUT. And, there’s your ACT BREAK For what it’s worth Michael Fox and I have differing opinions about just where Alex Keaton is today. I believe he does pro bono legal work for The Children’s Defense Fund. Mike thinks he’s just now getting out of prison. What can you do with your 401K or other tax sheltered retirement plan? Immediately transfer all funds to a money market account. Sure you won’t make much, but you won’t lose it. The broker will try to talk you out of selling. The fund manager will also be very unhappy. Accounts in money markets do not make any residual payments for them. Most investors who own mutual funds do not realize there are hidden fees that amount to about 2% every year. Mutual fund managers are paid by the amount of money in the portfolio and not on the performance of the fund. Even when investors are losing money month after month they remain fat cats. Brokers will tell the usual story that this is a great “opportunity” to buy XYZ company at this price. Don’t believe it. “This is a good company and it pays a large dividend.” Really? From 2000 to 2003 the S&P500 Index lost 40%. Would the dividends you might receive make up for such a huge loss? You can answer that one. History shows that during any 10-year period there has always been a market decline of 20% to 40% and sometimes more. Index funds are not a safe haven and 80% of mutual funds do not perform as well as a major index. Every index fund lost money during that 3 year period and many have not yet recovered. Cash is king. Recently there has been a new financial instrument created. It is an ETF – Exchange Traded Fund. It is similar to a mutual fund, but the expense ratio is about 1/10 that of regular mutual funds and it can be bought and sold during trading hours. Brokers also allow stop loss orders to be placed. And here is the kicker. There are bear ETFs. These are shares that go up when the stock market goes down. There are hundreds of them that take in the entire market including specialized sectors. These can be found simply by a Google search using the words “bear ETF”. Take the time to study these as this is a way you can use these inverse funds to profit in a bear market. That day will come. At some point, the media will quit taking sides in this thing and maybe start covering Barack Hussein Obama the same way they cover Bush, the same way they cover Cheney, and the same way they cover every Republican. I’ll look forward to that day when truth comes. I look forward to that.” Apparently, more content in attacking conservatives than liberals, the presumptive Republican nominee took responsibility for the remarks of Cunningham, but then repudiated them without even hearing what the comments were! Oh, and he claims that he never met Cunningham, a charge Cunningham himself repudiated to CNN’s John Roberts. From the transcript: ROBERTS: He said he’s never met you. CUNNINGHAM: He’s got a bad memory. ROBERTS: When did you meet him? CUNNINGHAM: I met him at the home of Bob Ryan, who is a friend of mine in Cincinnati, and I met him at the Kentwood Country Club in Cincinnati, Ohio, in the presence of [former] Senator Mike DeWine. I met him twice. His people called me specifically. His people said, “You’re the guy we want because you’ve met John.” But I’m not going to meet him again. I’ve had it up to here with McCain. He’s off the list. I’m joining Ann It seems he accepted the endorsement of televangelist John Hagee, a man frequently accused of being anti-Catholic in his sermons. Media reports say Hagee has referred to the Roman Catholic Church as “the great whore” and called it a “false cult system” and “the apostate church”; the word “apostate” means someone who has forsaken his religion. Hagee also implies that the Catholic Church helped shape Adolf Hitler’s anti-Semitism. “In no way did I intend for his endorsement to suggest that I in turn agree with all of Pastor Hagee’s views, which I obviously do not,” is about all the presumptive Republican nominee will say about Hagee. “It’s simply not accurate to say that because someone endorses me that I therefore embrace their views.” To his credit, the presumptive Democratic nominee has repudiated and rejected the endorsement of Louis Farrakhan, despite the glowing comments made by the virulent racist and anti-Semite at the Founders Day event in Chicago, all but proclaiming the presumptive Democratic Nominee the second coming of Mohammed. I guess the political machine behind the presumptive Democratic nominee is a bit more adept in handling this sort of crisis than the presumptive Republican nominee. But at least the Republican actually had a hand in writing his legislation. One can’t say that the presumptive Republican presidential nominee isn’t sensitive to matters of race in this campaign. Or is he? Stephen Dinan’s column in the Washington Times on Tuesday cites their Fox 5/Washington Times/Rasmussen Reports poll as saying the presumptive Democratic nominee is the most “likable” candidate for president. The presumptive Democratic nominee, according to the poll, is liked by Republicans nearly as much as the presumptive Republican nominee, and among all those polled, liked more than the presumptive Republican nominee and Hillary Clinton combined! The presumptive Republican nominee has a long hard row to how, and his trip to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue becomes rockier and more impassable by the day... But as the presumptive Democratic nominee could say, quoting Sally Field, they like him, they really like him. For now. WYATT COX Wyatt Cox doesn’t have to write too much these days. Before I learned how to speak God’s language, I said many things that were not even close to being God’s will. My mouth was untrained and unguarded. Do you have problems? Chances In the Bible, the apostle Paul are your answer is right under your said it like this, However, brethren, I nose! At least a major part of your could not talk to you as to spiritual troubles could be found there. I [men], but as to nonspiritual [men of don’t believe that anyone can live the flesh, in whom the carnal nature a victorious life without being well predominates], as to mere infants informed concerning the power of [in the new life] in Christ [unable words. to talk yet!] (1 Corinthians 3:1 The It’s easy to underestimate just how important our own words can actually be. Every time we open our mouths to speak, we have the opportunity to improve our lives or tear them down. Our words, in a very real way, are the building blocks of our lives. To say it another way, the life we are living right now has been strongly influenced by the words of our mouth. When we use words that uplift and encourage, we build a strong foundation that’s positive and lifegiving. When we use our words to help others—to teach, to train, to guide—we are building a life worth living. However, if we are deceptive, using our words to lie or cheat, or if our words tear down and destroy, our lives will be filled with misery. When we’re young, it’s only natural to get into trouble with our words. Immaturity can cause us to carelessly say things that come into our minds. But as we grow older, we’re expected to filter the words we say. We are supposed to become more mature—to learn that there are certain things that are beneficial to say and other things that are harmful. Sadly, this is a level of maturity that some people never achieve. Although they grow older, their mouths don’t mature accordingly. Many of us, however, learn to think before we speak and carefully consider the words that come out of our mouths. There were many times when I did not understand the impact of my Speaking God’s Language Amplified Bible). Little children are typically very selfish and often see themselves as the center of the world. As “babies in Christ,” we can be like this and say things that reflect our own will instead of God’s. And just as natural babies must learn to speak the language of their fathers, when we become Christians, we must learn how to talk God’s way. This takes time. We need time to understand His Word and His nature. The language of God will always be consistent with His desires, His wishes, His will, and His Word. The more we get to know Him, the more we will be able to speak His language in every situation.
