Dear Parents,
“Freedom cannot be achieved unless the women have been emancipated from all forms of oppression”.
(Nelson Mandela, 1994)
Celebrating Woman’s Day this week is a reminder of how to love and cherish our grandmothers, mothers,
sisters, friends, colleagues and neighbours. The spotlight placed on women in the home and workplace suggests
that we should be striving for more equality to share our ideas, motivate each other, create a dynamic world
and solve problems. It is not the race between men and woman however, which, I believe demands our
attention, rather the race we run within ourselves. Woman, men, girls and boys alike! Do we recognise our
strengths, do we rise to challenges which beg our attention and do we give of our best at every opportunity, do
we help others, do we refrain from criticism when a kind word of encouragement or acceptance would change
the outcome for so many we come into contact with or have influence over? I challenge us all to live the life we
dream of for our children, let us set the example of being upstanding and focused with drive, tenacity and
integrity. Let our Reddam House children emulate the belief that everything is possible with the right mind set
and that we possess the ability to effect life in a positive and wholesome way because we see it reflected in our
parents and teachers.
Several improvements and additions to our ASB campus have taken place in the last few weeks: College
students are enjoying their lessons in the brand new Loft classrooms; additional stage lighting and technology
has been installed in the Hall; the Library is being renovated in a new space; additional security cameras have
been installed and passage sliding windows have been fitted in the upper Prep block.
We would like to acknowledge and thank the parents and children for their generous support of Slipper Day on
5 August 2016. The children really do love this day and enjoy the fun of wearing their comfortable footwear to
school!
We would like to thank Michelle Solomons for helping us out with substitute teaching in the ELS. Michelle is a
wonderful addition to our staff and we wish her well as she travels back to Saudi Arabia to take up her teaching
responsibilities again.
A gentle reminder to parents that allowing your children from Grade 1 upwards, to climb out of the car at the
stop and drop in the parking area facilitates independence. Letting a child walk into the school building alone is
empowering. Packing school bags, settling in and starting the day is something that everyone needs to learn to
do with confidence. The school environment is really intended for the use of children primarily to do exactly
this and it would be a great day indeed, when we see less of the moms and dads during the working school day.
We love your support at sport fixtures, open mornings, special assemblies and meetings etc. – but we really do
need to ask that you think twice about taking away the opportunity for your child to learn and grow
independently.
Herewith a few highlights from the Senior Preparatory and College:
• The Matrics of 2016 enjoyed a stylish Dance at the Westin Hotel.
• Congratulations to Ms Edwards on her engagement to Mr Rafe Fortes.
• Our Gr 7s wrote the national Science Olympiad.
• Minerva University USA addressed the Matrics on an interesting and alternative approach to tertiary
studies.
• The Gr 8s demonstrated their creativity and entrepreneurial skills at their Market Day.
• Ms Terblanche arranged ‘real life’ panel interviews for the Matrics as a component of Life Orientation.
• The Gr 12 Drama students concluded their Drama Practical Prelim Exam.
• The Senior Executive held the 2016 ‘Talent Show’. It was great to have past students making up the
panel of judges.
• Congratulations to Gemma Dobrin (Gr 12) on being selected as one of the finalists in the Open Design
DesigNation Achiever’s Award.
• Congratulations to Caitlin Doyle (Gr 8) on her recent success in the Karate-Do Goju Kai National
Championships in Bloemfontein. Caitlin has been selected for the SA National Team going to Canada
next year!
• We welcome Lisa Wimmer (Gr 11) back after she represented SA in Synchronised Swimming in Russia.
Well done!
Important Message: Senior Prep Parents
Every afternoon there are several Gr 4 to Gr 7 students left unsupervised on campus, often
until very late. If your child is not involved in a formal school extra-mural activity and/or
officially part of the Homework Centre, they must please be collected and go home.

LETTER OF THANKS
On behalf of the committee, staff and clients of this home, we would like to thank you greatly for the

This has surely come at the right time when we desperately needed such help and friendship from all sectors in

people but also is overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God”.
Moira Henderson House is a home for those who have fallen on hard times. We’re able to offer temporary

STAGE 3 NEWS
We hope that everyone had a wonderful long weekend and are feeling refreshed for the remainder of the term.
We have had a busy couple of weeks. Thank you so much to everyone who participated in the “Reach for a
Dream Slipper Day”. We have finished off our Doctor and Dentist theme this week. The children enjoyed
dressing up and role playing in the classroom hospitals. Next week we begin with The Fireman. Children are
encouraged to bring their fire engines to school and we will have a special fire engine play session during the
week. Please remember to label any item that comes to school.
We are in full swing with practicing for our concert, Wamkelekile! Thank you to all the moms and dads who
have offered to help. If you would still like to help with the painting of the back drop, make-up or washing
clothes, please speak to Ms B directly. Please keep an eye on the notice boards for further information. In
between all the busyness the children have delight in learning about the Olympic Games in Rio. Last Friday they
participated in a Mini Olympics and loved eating their golden chocolate medal. Please feel free to bring
newspaper cuttings to put up on our Olympic board.

STAGE 4 NEWS
Dear Parents,
As is it the Olympics at present, we have decided to cover it as our theme for the
next 2 weeks. As an introduction to the Olympics the children enjoyed taking part in
fun sports activities set out on the Astro. The children had to move through 5
stations where upon completion of the task they received a coloured Koki dot on
their hands and once they had the 5 coloured dots representing the Olympic Rings
they received a chocolate coin. The tasks varied from hopscotch, weaving through
cones and throwing a ball into the goals, sifting through flour blindfolded in search
of 3 smarties, walking along balance beams and jumping through hoops. The children thoroughly enjoyed these
fun activities. We will be discussing all aspects of the Olympic Games from the history of it to the sports that
people take part in.
Our next theme will be insects and we have some lovely activities lined up for
that week. Please take your children out into the garden to explore the bugs
they can find.
Just a reminder to please send in hats, as we seem to be experiencing some
warm days and the children are required to wear them for Playball and
sports. We have also noticed that some children's fingernails are rather long, please can you cut them to avoid
scratching.
Our concert rehearsals are in full swing and we are so looking forward to showing you all what we have learnt.

STAGE 5 NEWS
With a bit of a stop-start beginning to the term we are now heading into our Term 3 with full
force! Concert preparations are well underway and the Stage 5 children are very excited to see
what their costumes will look like and what they are going to say. Please be mindful of meetings
that will take place according to what you have indicated you are willing to help with towards the
event. The Stage 5 children will receive a slip of paper with their words written on it, this will come
home within the next few weeks. Please help your child learn their words off by heart, remembering to speak
clearly and slowly……..and have fun!
Our theme of the Olympics has been of interest to all the children and we are feeling super proud of our South
African competitors that have achieved thus far. The theme for the following two weeks is that of ‘Materials’
and our sounds are ‘v’ and ‘y’. We look forward to exploring this theme with the Stage 5 children. Remember
that we encourage books, posters and interesting items that relate to the theme table being brought into
school in order to help facilitate the learning around each new topic.
Thank you

GRADE 1 NEWS
The Third term is well underway and it’s so true that time flies when you are having fun.
Slipper Day was loads of fun and the money we raised went to the wonderful ‘Reach for a Dream’
Foundation.
In class we have been working hard on reading, comprehension, phonics and creative writing. In
Mathematics we continue to build our skills of counting, addition and subtraction and story sums. We also did a
number of activities relating to patterns and had such fun exploring this important concept.
We recently had a visit from “Hooked on Books.” We were enthralled with the captivating stories they told us
and all the books are in our school library just waiting to be read.
The Grade 1s have produced some work of an excellent standard of which we are extremely proud. Each child
has made substantial progress in their own way since the beginning of the year. Do please ensure that the
reading, phonics and counting homework is revised every day, Monday to Thursday.
Thank you for your continued support.
Barbie Houba and Jill Balcomb
GRADE 2 NEWS
We’ve had two short but busy and successful weeks.
The children enjoyed Olympic fun to get into the spirit and excitement of the Rio
2016 Olympic Games opening, last Friday.
The children also participated in Slipper Day on the same day, so it was truly a day
filled with excitement. Thank you for your support.
In Mathematics, we are now counting up to 180 using multiples of 2's; 5's and 10's. Please also practice at
home. In Literacy, we have introduced rhyming words to prepare for poetry writing.
Regards, Annel Mellet and Terry Beukes
GRADE 3 NEWS
It's Olympic Fever!
With the ever-exciting 2016 Rio Olympics underway, the build up to
the opening ceremony may have been as big as the occasion itself.
The Grade Threes were in charge of decorating the tree and boy, did
they get stuck into this job. Soon after setting up the tree, they had
the responsible job of pairing up with the Stage 3 classes to help them
along with our Mini-Olympic games. A great time was had by all!
Last week saw the Municipal Elections and we were fortunate enough
to have Thati's mom to come and tell us a little more about the
elections and she spoke us through the process. We all got a lovely,
bright orange water bottle and later did our own mini-elections in class.
In class, we are currently revising the parts of speech, namely nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs and learning
to construct a creative writing piece. The children are learning to break a story up into paragraphs as well as
applying a beginning, middle and end. With our Singapore Maths programme, we are now exploring division
and multiplication in a fun and interactive manner. The classes are responding very well.
We are now concluding our theme of Recycling (please note the new recycling igloo situated in the parking
area) and moving to the theme of "How people lived long ago". Brace yourselves and family members - plenty
of questions to come!
Have a fun-filled weekend.
Regards,
Taryn Doidge and Christine Savides

Match Reports
Soccer
U9A vs Camps Bay Prim: On Thursday 4th August the U9A soccer team played Camps Bay in a tough match at
Green Point Cricket Club. The boys went into the match confident of coming up with a positive result but
unfortunately they were just outplayed by a better opposition losing the match 4-0. We are sure the team will
bounce back in the next game.
U9B vs Llandudno: The U9B soccer team took on Llandudno on Thursday 4th August in a pulsating match. The
boys controlled the game with great guise and poise coming up trumps with a 3-1 victory. Well done to the
team for an outstanding performance.
