NEWSLETTER | 29 July 2016 | VOLUME 3:02 From the Headmistress Shirley Oosthuizen Dear Parents, Do your little bit of good where you are. It’s these little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world”. (Desmond Tutu) Welcome back to school and we do hope our new students and parents have settled in quickly. The term started on a celebratory note with our special assembly delivered by Mr. Marcel Golding, Liam and Erin’s dad in Stage 5 in honour of Mr. Nelson Mandela’s birthday and 67 minutes of doing good. Mr. Golding worked closely with Mr. Mandela during his time prior to and during his years in office as President of South Africa. Mr. Golding delivered a sensitive and informative talk about Mr. Mandela and what he gave his life for to the young children, along with photographs in which they showed much interest. Some of the children asked pertinent questions displaying curiosity and insight. We do believe that keeping our history alive in the hearts and minds of our children is so important lest we forget where we come from and where we would like to go to in designing our future together. The atrocities of the past government and its policies need to be explained to the new generation so that they may never be repeated. We would like to thank all the parents and especially the P and F moms who donated soup, bread and spreads. We thank you also for helping the children to make sandwiches which were donated to facilities for distribution. We do hope you took advantage of the demonstration of the Smart Heart Board Game ® as devised by the Counselling Psychologist Christine Kritzas. We thank her for the talk offered to staff as it was valuable in very interesting. Our beloved Art teacher, Linda Sivitilli, has undergone some surgery and we wish her a speedy recovery and we eagerly await her return to school. We welcome Jill Balcomb in Grade 1 and we do hope that she will be given a warm reception as taking over a class mid-year is always a challenge for all concerned. Our Academic Head, Christine Savides has been partnering the teaching and learning in the classroom to ensure a smooth handover. Please do not hesitate to come and see either Christine Savides or myself should you have any concerns. This serves as a gentle reminder to all parents that the children are expected to wear the Reddam House uniform with pride and in its entirety. Please do not allow your child to wear casual clothing items along with the uniform. “Education is the great engine of personal development. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mine worker can become the head of the mine that a child of farmworkers can become the president of a great nation. It is what we make out of what we have, not what we are given, that separates one person from another”. (Nelson Mandela) A brief synopsis of the first fortnight’s news follows in the Senior Preparatory and College: • The Teacher-Parent Liaison meetings provided a meaningful opportunity for dialogue and communication. • • • • • • • • • • • The SP and College Mid-Year Academic Awards Assemblies commended students who had achieved in the first half of the year. Well done to the award recipients! The Gr 6 and Gr 9 students wrote the IEB Core Skill Examinations. These assessments are conducted nationally. We await the results later in the term. We say thank you and farewell to Dean Anthony who is transferring to RH Durbanville. We acknowledge Dean’s contribution to Sport at ASB and look forward to our schools participating against one another. We will welcome and introduce Byron v d Merwe next week. Lynda Terblanche marked IEB Matric Life Orientation papers in Johannesburg. Sincere sympathy and condolences to Susan Joubert and her family on the passing of her father. We wish Kirsty Rielly a speedy recovery after their surgery and look forward to welcoming her back next week. The Gr 9 students and their families attended the Gr 10: 2017 Subject Choice Evening. This was preceded by a special College Careers Assembly where several past students shared their studies and career paths with the students. Later in the day, the Careers Expo provided a wonderful opportunity for all students to start collecting information on future studies and careers options. Thank you to the staff, exhibiters and to the students and parents for your positive support. Isabella Sinn (Gr 12) was invited to attend the 52nd National Science Olympiad Youth Science Focus Week in Pretoria as a guest of SAASTA. Congratulations to Caitlin Doyle (Gr 8) on being selected to represent WP in the Karate-do Goju Kai SA Championships in Bloemfontein over the coming long weekend. We wish her and the team success. Shelley Robertson is extremely proud of the soccer girls who participated in the 5-a side soccer tournament and zonal trials. Well done! The Matrics are certainly looking forward to their Dance tomorrow evening! • Today, 29 July in history - 1565: Mary Queen of Scots marries Henry Stuart - 1588: England defeats Spanish Armada - 1836 Inauguration of Arc de Triomphe, Paris - 1883: Mussolini born - 1937: 18 yr old Crown Price Farouk crowned King of Egypt - 1938: ‘Dennis the Menace’ first appears - 1948: London Olympic Games open (first since Berlin, 1936) - 1957: UN establishes International Atomic Energy Agency - 1958: NASA established - 1977: Ships ‘Antipolis’ (Oudekraal) and ‘Romelia’ (Llandudno) wrecked off Cape Town’s shores - 1981: Prince Charles and Lady Diana wedding - 1984: Los Angeles Olympic Games open - 2011: South Sudan joins AU as its newest member • Did you know? We have begun our term learning about Nelson Mandela and giving back, where the children were very eager to help out on Mandela Day and make sandwiches for those less fortunate than us. The rest of the week encompassed opposites and we concluded this theme with an Opposite Day. The children thoroughly enjoyed dressing up to add to the fun aspect of the theme. This week we have been covering the topic of Domestic Animals and this will continue into next week. We have also decided to incorporate the Olympics into our Term and will be covering this topic for two weeks following our current theme. Please try and discuss the various Olympic sports and the countries participating in the Olympics with our children. Below are some pictures of the special events from the past week. Please be reminded to return all reply slips ASAP and to bring in an A4 Flip File for Muscle Mania if you haven’t already done so. Please also remember to send in hats, art aprons, tissues and spare clothes, especially warm tops and long pants. Stage 4 Teachers Roxan Shapurjee and Jo Berga STAGE 5 NEWS Welcome back to all our parents and we look forward to a busy, concert filled Term 3. We have begun the Term discussing both 2D and 3D shapes and finding these shapes in our environment has proved to be lots of fun. These are the shapes that we would expect our Stage 5 children to recognise by the end of the year: 2D shapes - circle, oval, semi-circle, square, rectangle, triangle, star, heart, cross, diamond, crescent and possibly pentagon, hexagon and octagon. 3D shapes – sphere, cylinder, cube, cuboid, cone, pyramid. Please help us by encouraging your children to notice shapes all around them. For the following two weeks we will be discussing the forthcoming Rio Olympics. We would love to have newspaper articles and relevant information on this topic brought to school. The sounds we will meet are ‘z’ and ‘w’. Please note - For Art class with Ms Sivitilli the children are asked to bring in from home a 2L milk plastic container and a stick that is about 15 to 20cm long. General reminders; Tissues in locker Sun hats Art aprons 5th August – Slipper Day, bring R10 for a sticker and wear your slippers to school. Check noticeboard and letters with regards to the concert. We had lots of Reading Eggs certificates at the beginning of the term which was great to see, please keep working on this. Stage 5 Teachers Miriam Dawson and Alex Smith GRADE 1 NEWS Welcome back to the Third term. We hope you had a wonderful holiday and a good rest. We are extremely privileged to have Mrs Balcomb on our staff and we welcome her warmly this term. Our themes for this term include: My Community, Manners and Responsibilities, Pets, Plants and Seeds and Food. We have a number of fun classroom activities planned. Please ensure that ALL of your child’s possessions are marked – this includes lunchboxes and juice bottles, as far too many items are being misplaced and their owners can never be found if they have no names on them. If you have any items of clothing at home that belong to someone else, please return them to school so that the rightful owner can be found. If your child’s hair is getting a bit wild and unruly, please take them to the barber or hairdresser to have their hair cut so that they look neat and smart as they represent Reddam House. Winter sport continues as in the second term. If for some reason your child is unable to attend a sport’s practise a note in their homework books or an email to the teacher is required. Thank you for your ongoing care and involvement. Grade 1 Teachers Barbara Houba and Jill Balcomb GRADE 2 NEWS We started the new term by celebrating Mandela’s Birthday. Guest speaker Mr. Marcel Golding told the children more about Mr. Mandela’s life. We proudly did our 67 minutes of preparing sandwiches which were distributed to Prestwich Primary and the Haven Shelter. On Monday this week, the children enjoyed a stunning performance from “Hooked on Books”. The children are very enthusiastic to start reading the books that were part of the show. In Mathematics next week, we will start exploring fractions. In Literacy we will be recapping the importance of using correct punctuation in sentences and using various verbs and adjectives in Creative Writing. We started learning about “soil” and we will be starting our own Grade 2 herb garden. Please continue working on Mathletics and Reading Eggs – we are always proud to see the results. Grade 2 Teachers Terry Beukes and Annel Mellet GRADE 3 NEWS It has been an exciting start to the term as we have begun with two favourite activities in Mandela Day and Hooked on Books. Everyone was productive on Mandela Day and we peeled, mashed and spread to make -egg mayonnaise sandwiches for the children at Prestwich Primary School. A huge thank you to all of you for your kind donations! We have introduced multiplication and will shortly touch on division as the two concepts are taught alongside each other in Singapore Maths. In language work we have revised nouns, introduced adjectives and next week we will begin with verbs. In reading we are encouraging the children to stop periodically and reflect on the characters, plot and storyline so they focus on comprehension of more advanced texts. We have written return letters to our pen pals in Thailand with all our holiday news and are eagerly awaiting their replies. Finding out all about them has been fascinating and the children have really enjoyed practicing their writing skills in real life situations. Next week promises lots of excitement with Market Day and Election Day. We have some electioneering of our own planned and a few Olympic surprises as well which we look forward to sharing with all of you. Grade 3 Teachers Christine Savides and Taryn Doidge SPORT SPORTS REPORT Welcome to term 3. We continued with our winter sports programme right form the first day of the term. We would like to wish all our incredible athletes a wonderful term. Please remember to pack warm clothing for our sports stars to put on after practice and matches as the temperatures are still on the low side. Rugby We are extremely proud of the following boys, Oliver French, Oliver Beagrie, Luca Simone, Thato Kolisang, Luke Mardell, Andrea Parrello, Ben Osborne, Riley Robinson and Remi Mentjies, who play for Hamiltons Rugby Club. Last week on Saturday, these boys played against SACS in a very exciting match and they put on quite a show with an excellent 50-25 victory.
