COUGARS HOST BOISE STATE, SET SIGHTS ON .500 MARK
Following a come-from-behind, overtime victory at UNLV on Saturday (Oct. 25), the Cougars
will return to Edwards Stadium to take on Boise State in the first-ever meeting between the two
schools. The game will be broadcast to a national television audience on ESPN, beginning at 5:45
p.m. (MST). The Cougars, now 4-5 overall on the season, will look to improve to 5-5 (.500) with
a win on Thursday. Boise State, winners of five straight, will enter Thursday’s game following a
77-14 pasting of San Jose State. The Broncos are 7-1 on the season and lead the WAC with a perfect 4-0 league record.

Thursday’s game between BYU and Boise State will mark the first-ever meeting between the two
schools. The game will mark the third time this season BYU has faced an opponent for the first
time, including games against USC (Sept. 6) and Stanford (Sept. 20). The Cougars are 0-2 in those
games; however, since 1922, BYU has posted 42 wins against first-time opponents. Overall, the
Cougars are 42-49-1 (.462) in games vs. first-time opponents. BYU head coach Gary Crowton has
fashioned a perfect 2-0 record in games against Boise State. As the head coach at Louisiana Tech
(1996-1998), Crowton and the Bulldogs posted a 31-27 win in 1997 and a 63-28 win in 1998 over
Boise State. The game will mark the first time BSU coach Dan Hawkins has faced the Cougars.

TELEVISION RECORD
From national publications to live television broadcasts, BYU football is one of the more visible
programs in the country. Since its first national television appearance in 1974, BYU has posted a
52-35-2 record when playing nationally televised games, including a 24-16 mark on ABC and a
28-22-2 record on ESPN or ESPN2. Dating back to 1980, the Cougars have appeared on national television an average of three times per season. Since the 1980 season, BYUhas played in at
least one nationally-televised game per year. On Sept. 1, 1984, Robbie Bosco led BYU to a 2014 victory over Pitt in the first live ESPN College football broadcast. Thursday's game will mark
the fourth of five nationally televised games this season. (The Cougars’games at USC and UNLV
were “split” nationally on ABC.)
THURSDAY NIGHT LIVE
Since the 1999 season — the first year of the Mountain West Conference — the Cougars have
played on Thursday night eight different times, posting a 4-4 record. Thursday’s game will mark
the third and final Thursday night contest for the Cougars this season. BYU started the season

THURSDAY’S STORYLINES
• Thursday’s game will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
• BYU head coach Gary Crowton is 2-0 against Boise State, racking up wins as the head coach at
Louisiana Tech.
• The Cougars are 5-2-1 all time against teams from Idaho, including a record of 3-0 against Idaho
State, 1-2 against Idaho and 1-0-1 against the College of Idaho. BYU has not played a team
from the state of Idaho since 1955 — a 49-6 loss at Idaho. The Cougars are 2-1 in Provo against
teams from Idaho. BYU has not lost to a team from Idaho since 1955.
• The BYU roster includes three players from Idaho, including Levi Madarieta (Weiser), Scott
Tidwell (Nampa) and Quinn Christensen (Idaho Falls) while the Boise State roster does not
include a single player from the state of Utah.
• The Cougars recorded their fifth overtime victory on Saturday, defeating UNLV 27-20.

(517.9), Scoring Offense (41.9), Rushing Defense (75.5), Total Defense (340.0), Scoring
Defense (15.9), Net Punting (37.5), Punt Returns (13.91), Passing Efficiency (161.4)
• Boise State’s Ryan Dinwiddie ranks sixth nationally in total offense, averaging 326.0 yards per
game.
• Thursday’s game will mark the 70th career game for BYUhead coach Gary Crowton. In over
five seasons as a head football coach at the Division I-Alevel, Crowton has tallied a record of
42-27 (.609), including a mark of 21-14 (.600) at BYU. Crowton spent three years as a head
coach at Louisiana Tech, posting a record of 21-13 (.618).

THE STREAK IS STILL ALIVE ... 359 GAMES AND COUNTING
Following Toby Christensen’s 8-yard touchdown reception from Matt Berry in the second quarter at UNLV, BYU extended its NCAA-record streak to 359 games without being shutout. BYU
was last shutout during the 1975 season (Sept. 27, 1975 vs. Arizona State.) Interestingly, the
Cougars do not have a single player on their rosters who was alive the last time BYU was shutout.
MILESTONE VICTORY
The Cougars’44-36 win over San Diego State on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003 marked BYU’s 450th alltime victory, dating back to the 1922 season. Over that 80-plus-year span, the Cougars have posted a mark of 450-348-26 (.562). The win also marked the 20th victory for head coach Gary
Crowton since taking over the helm of the BYU program in 2001. In his third season at BYU,
Crowton has racked up a record of 20-14 (.588). Over the span of his career, including three years
as the head coach at Louisiana Tech Crowton is 41-27 (.603).

COUGARS LOOK TO AVOID 35-YEAR OLD RECORD
The Cougars haven’t lost four straight games in a single season since the 1968 season. Yet, having lost three straight at home, dating back to the Cougars Sept. 20 loss against Stanford, BYU is
just one win away from equaling the 35-year-old record. After opening the season with a 24-13
win over Georgia Tech at Edwards Stadium, the Cougars have dropped three straight home games,
posting a 1-3 mark on the season. The Cougars lost an 18-14 decision to Stanford, followed by a
24-10 loss against Air Force on Sept. 27. Most recently, BYU lost to Colorado State, 58-13, on
Oct. 9, marking the most points ever allowed and the largest losing margin ever recorded in Provo.
With a three game home losing streak, the Cougars will look to pick up a win against Boise State
and avoid the first four-game home losing streak in Provo since the 1968 season. That year, under
head coach Tommy Hudspeth, the Cougars were 0-5 in Provo. A win on Thursday, combined with
a win in Provo on Nov. 22 (vs. Utah) would ensure the Cougars of their 32nd straight non-losing
home season.
HOME SWEET HOME
With a perfect 6-0 record in Provo during the 2001 season, the Cougars have recorded 12 undefeated home season since the 1967 campaign. In fact, since the stadium was expanded to 65,000,
the Cougars have posted eight different seasons without losing a game in Provo. The 2001 perfect
home season marked the first since 1998. BYUfinished the 2002 season with a 4-2 home record,
marking the team’s 31st consecutive non-losing home season. The Cougars are 169-56 (.751) in
Provo, dating back 40 years (1963), including a 10-7 (.589) home record against MWC opponents
since 1999.
IN THE TRENCHES
The BYU offensive line, which includes three seniors and two freshmen, weighs in at a beefy
1,600 pounds, averaging 320 pounds per man. The O-line will be squaring off against a Boise
State defensive line (two seniors, a junior and a sophomore) that tips the scales at an average
262.8 per man. On defense, the Cougars’line (three seniors) weighs in at 280.3 pounds per
man, while the Broncos’offensive line (two seniors, two juniors and a sophomore) average 290
pounds per man.
RUSHING TOUCHDOWN DROUGHT COMES TO AN END
Prior to the Cougars’game at San Diego State, BYU had not scored a rushing touchdown over 30
straight quarters, dating back to a second-quarter touchdown run from Lance Pendleton against
Wyoming on Nov. 9, 2002 in Provo. Over that span, including the second half of the 2002
Wyoming game, the Cougars posted a record of 3-5, scoring a total of 11 touchdowns.
Quarterback John Beck put an end to the streak, scoring on a four-yard touchdown in the first
quarter. Since that touchdown, the Cougars have scored three more rushing touchdowns, including another rushing TD at SDSU, a two-yard run at Wyoming and a 1-yard run at UNLV.

THE CROWTON FILE
In 2001, Gary Crowton, a native of Orem, Utah,
took over a BYU program that had been under the
direction of college football’s sixth all-time winningest coach, LaVell Edwards (257-101-3; .716).
In his first season, Crowton guided the Cougars to
an impressive 12-2 season, climbed as high as
No. 9 in the national polls, lead the nation in scoring and yards-per-game average, won the MWC
title and earned a trip to the 2001 Liberty Bowl.
Crowton, 46, came to BYU with a long and
proven list of coaching accomplishments. Prior to
serving two seasons as the offensive coordinator with the NFL’s Chicago
Bears, where his offense ranked third in the NFL in passing yardage during
the 1999 season, Crowton was head coach at Louisiana Tech from 1996-1998.
There he guided the Bulldogs to a 21-13 (.618) record over three seasons,
including a 9-2 mark in 1997. Competing as an independent for three straight
years, Louisiana Tech recorded wins over the likes of Mississippi State, Cal
and Alabama. Using its Crowton-designed, high-powered offense, the program also recorded impressive wins by scoring 50-or-more points against
eight different opponents, including games of 60-or-more points in five different games. Crowton’s offense ranked third in the nation, both in passing
and total offense, while the Bulldogs racked up 12,746 yards passing in three
years, an average of 4,249 yards per season. The prolific Tech offense also
produced 115 touchdown receptions, averaging 38.3 TDs per season. Under
Crowton, Louisiana Tech engineered 22 different 300-yard passing games,
including a school-record 10, 300-yard outings during the 1998 season. In
1998, Crowton’s final season at Louisiana Tech, the Bulldogs combined for a
school-record 4,943 yards passing.
Crowton’s coaching career actually began in 1982 as a student assistant under
Edwards at BYU. While at BYU he

Famer, Steve Young. From BYU,
Crowton moved on to Snow College
in Ephraim, Utah, where he coached
from 1983-86. While at Snow
College, Crowton moved from defensive backs coach to offensive coordinator. Under his offensive leadership,
the Badgers won the National Junior
College Athletic Association National
Championship in 1985. From Snow
College, Crowton moved to Western
Illinois for one season, before taking
over as the offensive coordinator at New Hampshire.
In 1991, Crowton was hired as the quarterbacks coach at Boston College
under head coach Tom Coughlin. There he helped develop quarterback Glenn
Foley as a candidate for the Heisman Trophy. After three successful seasons
with the Eagles, Crowton was hired as the co-offensive coordinator at Georgia
Tech, where his offense led the Yellow Jackets to a No. 21 national ranking in
his first and only season in Atlanta. In 1995, Crowton was hired as the offensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech, where he would become the head coach
the following season.
Crowton, who is the first-ever head football coach at BYU to serve an LDS
Church mission, is married to the former Maren Peterson of Bountiful, Utah.
The couple was married in 1985 and have seven children.

IT’S NO COINCIDENCE
While at Louisiana Tech, Gary Crowton recorded three straight seasons with
a scoring average of 33 points per game or better. In 1996, the Crowton-led
Bulldogs averaged 36.4 points per game, but dropped off to a mere 33.1
points per game in 1997. In 1998, Crowton’s final season at Louisiana Tech,
the Bulldogs published a 41.1 points-per-game average. During the 2001 season, his first year at BYU, Crowton and the Cougars lead the nation with an
amazing 46.7 points per game average.
CROWTON NOTABLES
• Crowton is the first coach in BYU history to win more than seven games in
his first season.
• In only his fourth year as a Division-IA coach, Crowton recorded his 30th
career victory — a 56-34 victory over Sonny Lubick and the Colorado
State Rams during the 2001 season.
• In his fifth season as a collegiate head coach, Crowton coached in his 50th
career game, defeating Hawaii, 35-32.
• Crowton’s 20th victory at BYU came on Oct. 4, 2003 at San DiegoState —
a 44-36 win over the Aztecs.
• Crowton became only the second coach in BYU football history to win 12
games in a single season after defeating Mississippi State, 41-38, during the
2001 season. LaVell Edwards accomplished the feat three different times
during his 29-year career, including a 14-win season during the 1996 campaign. Crowton’s previous single-season best win total was 9-2 at Louisiana
Tech during the 1997 season.

LAST WEEK (BYU 27, UNLV 20)
The BYU offense scored a touchdown on its only possession in
overtime, and the defense intercepted a fourth-down, desperation
pass by UNLV to earn a 27-20 victory over the Rebels at Sam
Boyd Stadium on Saturday. Matt Berry completed a nine-yard
touchdown pass to Toby Christensen to give the Cougars the lead
following their first overtime possession. Berry was 3-for-4 for
24 yards in overtime, including two passes to Daniel Coats.
Berry finished the game 31- of-44 for 274 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also ran for one score — a quarterback keeper to tie the score at 20-20 with just :29 seconds
remaining. After Berry's touchdown pass in overtime, UNLV's
offense
took the field. On its first play, Rebel running back

third and 12. The defense forced an incompletion on third down
and Aaron Francisco intercepted a pass on fourth down to seal the Cougar victory, ending BYU's
two-game losing streak. UNLV jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter, benefiting from three
Cougar turnovers on consecutive possessions, resulting in 10 Rebel points. But the Cougars would
come roaring back in the second quarter, matching the Rebels' output in the first quarter to knot
the game at 13 going into halftime. BYU scored first on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Berry
to Christensen. Matt Payne rounded out the scoring, kicking 40- and 50-yard field goals in the first
half of play. The two teams remained scoreless for much of the second half. The Rebels scored on
a 22-yard pass from Kurt Nantkes to Earvin Johnson to take a 20-13 lead with 4:56 left to play in
the game. After the UNLV score, BYU took over with 4:56 left in the game, and Berry led the
team 70 yards down the field, scoring on a one-yard run to tie the game and force overtime. He
completed 6-of-7 passes on the drive for 53 yards, completing passes to four different receivers.
POST-GAME NOTES
• With a 27-20 victory over UNLV, the Cougars improved to 5-0 in overtime games. Each of the
Cougars’five overtime games have been played on the road. With the win, BYU is now 2-0 in
overtime games played at Sam Boyd Stadium. BYUdefeated Wyoming in overtime in las
Vegas at the 1996 WAC Championship game. Saturday’s game was the first overtime contest
since upending Virginia, 38-35, in Charlottesville during the 2000 season.
• The Cougars entered halftime with a 13-13 tie, marking the first time since the San DiegoState
game BYU has not trailed at the break. The game marked the fifth time this season BYU has
not trailed at halftime.
• UNLV’s Dillon Pieffer connected on a 33-yard field goal with 7:10 left in the first quarter, marking the sixth time this season (fourth straight game) BYU’s opponent has scored first in the
game. The Cougars are 3-3 when the opponent scores first.
• BYUreceiver Toby Christensen was credited with 10 receptions for 81 yards and two touchdowns. Christensen’s performance marked the first time in nearly two seasons a receiver has
produced 10 or more receptions. Christensen’s 10 receptions marked the first time since the
2001 season finale on Dec. 8, 2001 (at Hawaii) that a BYU receiver has recorded 10 or more
receptions.
• Defensive back James Allen was credited with 12 tackles in the Cougars’ win over UNLV.
Allen’s double-digit performance marked the second double-digit tackle performance since
David Nixon posted 12 takedowns against Colorado State. It also marked the fifth double-digit
tackle performance by a BYUplayer this season. Aaron Francisco leads the team with a pair of
11-tackle performances (vs. Air Force and Stanford).
• With the victory, the Cougars improved to 9-2 all time against UNLV and have now won seven
of the past eight meetings. The win also marked the Cougars fifth straight win over UNLV at
Sam Boyd Stadium. Since the two teams first meeting in Las Vegas, BYU has posted a perfect
5-0 record against the Rebels in their own stadium.
• With the win, BYU head coach Gary Crowton improved to 2-1 all-time against the Rebels while
UNLV coach John Robinson fell to 1-4 against the Cougars.
• Entering the game, UNLV averaged 327.3 yards per game. The BYU defense held the Rebels
to 271 total yards — 56.3 yards below their average. The game marked the seventh game of
the season that the BYUdefense has not allowed a 100-yard rusher. The Cougars have not
allowed a 100-yard rusher in five straight games.

Prior to the Cougars' 44-point offering against San DiegoState, the Cougars had scored just 76
points through the first five games, marking the lowest overall scoring total to start a season since
1970 when BYU scored just 55 points in the first five games. That stretch also included a 17-0
shutout at UTEP, and a 10-7 win over North Texas. The Cougars started 1-4 in 1975 and finished
with an overall record of 3-8. The Cougars posted more points against the Aztecs, eclipsing their
combined total over the previous three games. In fact, BYU racked up 24 points in the second
quarter, marking the highest single-quarter point total of the season. Against Wyoming, the
Cougars managed just 10 points, marking the fifth time this season BYU has scored 14 or less
points. Through the first nine games of the season, the Cougars have scored 170 points, averaging 18.9 points per game. The scoring average is the lowest through nine games since the 1970
season when BYU averaged 13 points through nine games.

A BYU alum, Wrubell joined
the broadcast crew in 1992 as
the sideline/lockerroom reporter. He began calling BYU basketball
games in 1996.
Joining Wrubell is game analyst and former BYU quarterback Marc
Lyons. Lyons is a 22-year veteran of Cougar football broadcasts, and
contributes to KSL's extensive midweek and gameday coverage.
In his second season on the sidelines is Bill Riley. Riley also hosts the
weekly "Gary Crowton Show" (Wednesday nights at 7:00) and
"Coordinators' Corner" with Robbie Bosco and Bronco Mendenhall
(Thursday nights at 7:00 live at Tucano's Restaurant).
Chief Engineer John Dehnel returns for his 18th season, while veteran
statistician Ralph Sokolowsky and spotter Doug Martin complete the
lineup in the booth.
KSL's gameday coverage begins two hours prior to kickoff with the
"Cougar Countdown Show." The "Cougar Pregame Scoreboard Show"
starts the broadcast's second hour, with the "Cougar Pregame Coach's
Show" 35 minutes prior to kickoff, followed by the "Cougar Kickoff
Show."
After the game, KSL presents the "Cougar Postgame Scoreboard Show,"
followed by the "Cougar Lockerroom Show," "Cougar Postgame Coach's
Show," "IFA Country Store Replay," and "Cougar Call-In Show."

COOPER LEADS MWC
Redshirt Freshman Brett Cooper leads the Mountain West Conference in kick returns and ranks
seventh nationally with an average 28.5 yards per kick return. In his first game as a kick returner
(vs. against San Diego State) Cooper returned four kicks for 154 yards, including a season high
return of 49 yards.
WHAT A PAYNE
Junior punter/kicker Matt Payne leads the Mountain West in punting and ranks 9th nationally with
an average 45.2 yards per punt. He is also second in the league after connecting on 14-of-17 (.824)
field goals, including a long of 53 yards—the second longest field goal in BYU history behind a
56-yarder by Owen Pochman. Payne also leads the Mountain West with a perfect 18-for-18 mark
in point-after attempts. Sixteen of Payne’s 58 punts have landed inside the 20-yard line. Against
UNLV, Payne nailed 40- and 50-yard field goals and had five punts for 258 yards, averaging a
career-high 51.6 yards per punt.
SWEET REVENGE
Since 1980, BYU has had 67 different opportunities to repay an opponent for a previous loss.
When the Cougars face an opponent, having lost in the previous meeting, they have recorded a
43-24 (.642) record. Since Nov. 7, 1998 BYU has lost only three games to an opponent in a payback situation, posting a 18-3 record. BYU knocked off Syracuse on Aug. 29, 2002 and held off
Hawaii on Sept. 6, 2002. In 2003, the Cougars have posted a 3-2 record in payback opportunities, defeating Georgia Tech, 24-13, New Mexico, 10-7 and UNLV 27-20, while losing to Air
Force 24-10 and Colorado State 58-13, in the first five of six total payback games this season. Of
the six-payback opportunities, the Cougars will face four opponents in Provo. Following is a look

A BRATH OF FRESH AIR
After running back Marcus Whalen went down with a foot injury in the Cougars’season-opener
against Georgia Tech, junior running back Reynaldo Brathwaite burst on to the scene and hasn’t
looked back. Brathwaite leads the Cougars with 735 yards rushing on the season, ranking fifth
overall in the Mountain West. Brathwaite, a 5-foot-10, 170-pound junior has 131 carries on the
season, averaging 5.6 yards per carry. He has posted a BYU record 95-yard touchdown run (at
San Diego State), in addition to an 89-yard run in the Cougars’10-7 win at New Mexico.

On the season the Cougars have allowed 33 scoring drives, including 13 drives of 38 yards or
less. The longest drive for an opponent this season has been an 83 yarder (at San Diego State),
while the shortest was an 11-yard drive posted by USC. BYU opponents average scoring drive
covers 49.5 yards. Offensively, BYU has had 30 scoring drives, averaging just over 55.3 yards
per drive. The Cougars’longest drive was a 95-yarder against San Diego State, while the shortest was a 7-yard drive at UNLV. Nine of the Cougars’30 scoring drives have been 78 yards or
longer.
MWC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Throughout the season, the Cougars have had two different players earn Mountain West
Conference player-of-the-week honors:
Junior running back Reynaldo Brathwaite was named the Mountain West Conference
Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 15 after racking up 169 yards on 19 carries in the Cougars'
10-7 win over New Mexico. The 5-foot-10, 170-pound junior college transfer (Grossmont JC)
recorded the Cougars' first 100-yard rushing performance of the season, averaging an impressive
8.9 yards per carry. He was also credited with three receptions for 18 yards, in addition to a
game-saving pass completion to Toby Christensen for 26 yards. Brathwaite's rushing average
was enhanced following an 89-yard run on the Cougars' second drive of the game, setting up a
20-yard Matt Payne field goal that would prove to be the difference in BYU's three-point MWC
victory over the Lobos. On the play, Brathwaite took the handoff to the left side and promptly
ran in to a wall of New Mexico defenders. After changing directions, and picking up a key block
from tackle Brandon Stephens, Brathwaite sprinted down the sideline 89 yards before being
brought down at the UNM 1-yard line. Brathwaite's run marked the longest in BYU history since
Weldon Jackson rumbled for a school-record 93 yards way back in 1958—over 45 years ago.
Brathwaite's run also tied Colorado State's Cecil Sapp for the second longest run in MWC history. With his performance, Brathwaite became only the seventh player to eclipse the 100-yard
mark against the Lobos since the start of the 2000 season—a span of 40 games. It was also the
most yards recorded by a single player against New Mexico since Utah's Dameon Hunter reeled
off 177 yards in 2001. Perhaps the most crucial series of the game came with 4:47 remaining in
the fourth quarter. With the game still very much in doubt, Brathwaite became the go-to-guy for
the Cougars. On first-and-10 from the BYU 30-yard line, Brathwaite was credited with a nineyard carry, setting up a second-and-one from the BYU 39. Another Brathwaite carry gained four
yards, followed by another one-yard run. Two plays later, facing second-and-12 from the New
Mexico 42-yard line, Brathwaite picked up six more yards. On third-and-six, head coach Gary
Crowton went to his bag-o-tricks. Brathwaite took the pitch from quarterback Todd Mortensen,
looked off his primary receiver, Jason Kukahiko, and found Toby Christensen for a 26-yard pass
that gave BYU the game-clinching first down. All totaled, Brathwaite was credited for 213 of
the Cougars' 308 total net yards -- 70 percent of BYU's total offense in a 10-7 victory over New
Mexico.
BYU freshman tight end Daniel Coats was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the
Week on Sept. 1 after helping the Cougars to a 24-13 season-opening victory over Georgia Tech.
In his first collegiate game, Coats not only earned the starting assignment against Georgia Tech,
he also led the entire team with six receptions for 93 yards. Coats, a graduate of Northridge HS
in Layton, Utah, was also credited with a game-high two touchdown receptions and averaged
15.5 yards per reception. With BYU trailing 3-0 with 5:07 remaining in the first quarter, facing
a fourth-and-three from the Georgia Tech 38 yards line, sophomore QB Matt Berry found Coats
over the top for a 38-yard, finger-tip touchdown catch—his first, career reception. In the third
quarter, trailing the Yellow Jackets 13-7, Berry hooked up with Coats for what would be the
game-winning touchdown—a 15-yard pass in the endzone to cap a seven-play, 80-yard drive to
start the second half. With his performance, Coats ranked as the nation's top tight end with an
average 6.0 receptions and 93.0 yards per game. He was also the nation's second-leading freshman receiver.
PAPER OR PLASTIC
Against San Diego State, BYUrecorded six sacks, improving its season total to 17. Against
Colorado State and Wyoming the Cougars sacked the opposing quarterback three times each
contest. Last week against UNLV, the Cougar defense sacked Rebel quarterback Kurt Nantkes
one time to improve its total to 23 sacks. In the season’s first five games the Cougars had recorded 11 sacks, averaging 2.2 sacks per contest. Colby Bockwoldt leads the team with 4.5 sacks,
followed by Brady Poppinga with four and John Denney with 3.5. BYU has seven players with
at least two sacks on the season.

DEFENSIVE NOTES
The Cougar defense, which ranks 17th nationally and yields 302.5 yards per game, will face a
Boise State offense that is third in the nation in total offense with an average of 518 yards per
game. Bronco quarterback Ryan Dinwiddie is ninth in the nation in pass efficiency with a rating
of 161.1 and has thrown for 2,609 yards 18 touchdowns and one interceptions. BYU’s defense
ranks first in the MWC and is tied for 21st nationally with eleven interceptions. Jernaro Gilford
and John Denney lead the Cougars in interceptions with two a piece. Eight Cougars have at least
one interception. Last week against UNLV, Aaron Francisco grabbed his first interception of the
year to seal the Cougars’victory in overtime. The Cougar defense ranks second in the MWC
in rush defense and second in pass defense.The BYU defense has scored one touchdown on the
season. Interestingly, that touchdown came against San Diego State, marking the third straight
game at Qualcomm Stadium the Cougars have scored a defensive touchdown ('99, Hans Olson;
'01, Isaac Kelley; '03, Colby Bockwoldt.). On the season, the BYU defense has prevented its

ONCE IN A BLUE MOON
A loss against Utah in the 2002 season-finale marked the first losing season at BYU since the
Cougars posted a 5-6 record in 1973. Like Crowton in 2002, it was also LaVell Edwards’second season at the helm. Following a 63-33 win over Air Force on Oct. 20, 2001, the Cougars
claimed their 28th straight non-losing season. The Cougars’streak of 28 straight non-losing seasons ranked 10th all-time at the NCAADivision I-Alevel and was the third longest streak in the
nation. Nebraska currently ranks first with 41 straight seasons without a losing campaign. After
the Cougars posted a losing season in 1973, they went on to win a National Championship in
1984, 21 league titles and made 23 bowl appearances, including 17 straight bowl trips from
1978-1994.
AMONG THE BEST IN THE MWC
In the four-year history of the Mountain West Conference, the Cougars have posted a 21-13
record against league opponents. During that span, the Cougars have registered a combined,
overall record of 36-21 (.632). Overall, the Cougars have won more league titles, and have been
to more bowl games than any other team in the MWC. BYU has won two of the four MWC
titles. Of the seven MWC opponents, only Air Force and Colorado State have a winning record
over the Cougars with both posting a 3-2 record against BYU in the five-year history of the
Mountain West. Utah has posted a 2-2 record against BYU. The Cougars own a winning record
over four MWC opponents, including New Mexico (4-1), San Diego State (4-1), UNLV (4-1)

Entering Fall Camp, the BYU roster boasts 49 players with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better, including 15 studentathletes with a 3.5 GPA or better. (Todd Mortensen leads the team
with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average.) Additionally, five players
on the 2003 roster have graduated and will be pursuing graduate
degrees at BYU, including Toby Christensen, Ifo Pili, Justin Jory,

TURNOVER A NEW LEAF
Last season the Cougars gave up an average 2.9 turnovers per game. After nine games, BYU has
produced a minus 6 turnover margin. While recording four turnovers against Georgia Tech, allowing just two, the Cougars gave up five turnovers against USC, while forcing just three turnovers.
In a defensive battle at New Mexico, the Cougars recovered one fumble, and did not allow a single turnover. Stanford won the turnover battle, throwing two interceptions while recovering three
BYU fumbles and intercepting two passes. Against Air Force BYU had one interception and lost
one fumble. Against San Diego State BYU recovered two fumbles and intercepted one pass, while
the Aztecs recovered three Cougar fumbles. Against Colorado State, BYU recovered two fumbles,
while the Rams also recovered two fumbles and recorded two interceptions. Wyoming and BYU
committed three turnovers a piece. BYU produced a minus two turnover margin last week against
the Rebels. On the season BYU committed 28 turnovers, while its opponents have committed 21.

IN THE RED ZONE
On the season, the Cougars have scored 19 of 23 times it has entered the Red Zone. In the seasonopener against Georgia Tech, BYU scored on 3-of-4 trips inside Georgia Tech’s 20-yard line,
including two touchdowns and a field goal. Defensively, the Cougars gave up two field goals, and
forced a fumble inside the Red Zone. In one of the best red zone defensive series of the night,
Georgia Tech had a first-and-goal from the Cougars’four-yard line. Linebacker Mike Tanner and
Cougarback Aaron Francisco stopped P.J. Daniels for a one-yard to bring up second and goal from
the three-yard line. After a delay of game penalty, Tech quarterback Reggie Ball threw the ball
away as the Cougars applied exceptional defensive coverage. Facing third and goal from the eightyard line, defensive end John Denney swatted Ball’s pass attempt to force fourth-and-goal from
the eight-yard line. The Yellow Jackets managed a a 26-yard field goal after having the ball inside
the four-yard line. Against fourth-ranked USC, the Cougars scored on three-of-three attempts
inside the Red Zone, including a 14-yard touchdown pass from Matt Berry to Daniel Coats.
