With his former production partner – the highly accomplished Doug Beck – BORIS completed ‘underground house’ remixes for Britney Spears, Cyndi Lauper, Salt-n-Pepa, Boyz II Men, Brandy, Shania Twain, and Mya, among others. Indeed, BORIS has an impressive catalogue of production credits under his belt, but it’s in the clubs and the electrified surge coming from the DJ booth where BORIS’ influence reigns supreme. Today, he holds a residency headlining the main room at Crobar as well as regular gigs playing Asseteria parties and afterhours at Discotheque. BORIS’ latest compilation, BELIEVE (Moist Music), has been released worldwide on JANUARY 24th, 2006. Live BORIS club mixes are burning-up the satellite airwaves on SIRIUS Satellite Radio (Sirius Channel 33, “Area 33”) and New Yorkers can also catch BORIS on WKTU Radio’s underground house music show, “The Sanctuary DJ BORIS : FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE… Zdraz woutjie Mista B, wassup ? Hey, Boris here. How ya doing? I understand that you’re hailing from Russia. Anything from there that you’ve brought into your work ? I brought the so-called “hard-work ethic” over with me when my parents and I moved to the U.S. as immigrants. I was only 2-years-old when I first came over to the States. My parents were immigrants who came to this country, worked really hard and succeeded. Your press release states that you embody the NYC sound. Which one then, knowing that there are also David Morales, Louie Vega, Joe Claussell, Danny Tenaglia, François K, Junior Vasquez also firmly associated to it ? More than ten years ago, before I ever started DJ’ing professionally, one of my biggest influences was Junior Vasquez. That’s back when I used to go out to the clubs a lot, like when I was 15-years-old. My three favorite artists are: Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and Prince. I think that all of the big “New York DJs” can personify a kind of “New York sound,” and I’d like to think that I embody a particular style of this hallowed sound. (At least, that’s what I’ve been told several times!) [laughs] My sound is very high-energy, uplifting, progressive house, and since I play for 12, 13, 14 or 15-hours non-stop, I get the opportunity to take my crowds on a real journey. I play tracks that are really banging, yeah, but I also play tracks that are considered classics, or tracks that are really melodic and beautiful, as well as tracks with vocals, but not that many diva vocals. Mostly, my sound has a lot of tribal percussion, and New York crowds are really into drums because that’s what moves them. New York crowds are really very demanding. As a club DJ, and especially in big-rooms (like the ones I play in), you have to prove yourself night-after-night. If you’re not being creative and really moving the crowd, they’ll let you know it and you’ll never get away with it again. At least that’s what I’ve seen from my experience. How did you get to DJ and produce ? As I said, I started going out clubbing in New York when I was only 15-years-old. My parents moved here from Russia and we lived in Brooklyn. There’s a big Russian community there, as you might know. Anyway, my parents have always been really supportive of me, and when on my sixteenth birthday, they bought me a DJ set-up: a Gemini mixer and two Technics SL-1200 series vinyl turntables. I really have to give big props to my parents, because all the time I was going on-and-on about how cool the big club DJs were and how much I wanted to be a DJ myself, my parents never discouraged me or told me that I had to be a doctor or lawyer, instead. [laughs] I practiced for around two years just in my bedroom, and then I gave a demo tape which I’d made to a friend of mine. He listened to the demo and he must’ve liked what he heard, because he turned me on to a party that he was starting – which happened to be my first gig – and that turned into a kind of residency that lasted for two years. As far as production goes, a mutual friend introduced me to my former partner (Doug Beck), and from there on, we produced a lot of great tracks together. Nowadays, I do my own productions, such as for Atlantic Records for Missy Elliott’s track titled “Lose Control,” and for Colombia Records/Sony Music for Vivian Green’s track “Wish We Could Go Back.” What have been your influences ? See above: my earliest and biggest influences were Junior Vasquez, and today are Danny Tenaglia and Carl Cox. Your definition of a (good) DJ ? I’d say my definition of a good DJ is determined by his or her mixing, track selection, how he or she programs a night, and how well he/she is able to control a crowd. A (good) production ? You’d know a good production when you hear one, even if you don’t know a single thing about studio production. If a record sounds good, is a good mix, if the arrangement of instrumentation and vocals is good, and if the track has great energy…then that’s probably a well-produced track. A (good) night ? For me, a good night consists of a great vibe, excellent music, a crowd that’s very “up for it” and open-minded and enthusiastic, a terrific venue… and of course, great lighting and visuals. The fact that the sound has to be strong and clear goes without saying. Your view about the current situation, musically speaking ? I feel that the dance music scene is back on the rise, due to more people coming out to the clubs. There was a time there – mainly during the Giuliani era and the period following 9/11 – where the club scene took kind of a beating, but I definitely feel that it’s healthy right now and only getting stronger. Take a look at all the new venues, big and small, opening-up all over the city! You’re left on a desert island with no less than 3 things. Which ones ? A giant home-theatre-type TV (with satellite connection, of course!), a toothbrush, and a really powerful laptop with wireless Internet connection and a hard-drive that’s loaded-up with Ableton Live and Pro Tools so I can still make music. And, lots of books. Ok, that’s four items! Your 3 favourite DJ’s/artists/producers ? Right at this moment, my three favorite DJ/prodcers are Danny Tenaglia, Carl Cox and Chus and Ceballos. Spaciba barza tovaritch. Anytime, and let me know when you’re coming to New York, next time. _ BORIS DMC ORTOFON Ortofon has been chosen as the exclusive cartridge and styli sponsor for the DMC World DJ Championships This mean that only Ortofon will be permitted to be used by the competing DJs in the events worldwide. Yes, I have been scratching since I was 1. Where does this interest come from? It comes from my Dad, DJ Akshen. How did it all start? My Dad gave me his old mixer and a broken turntable to play with and I started making scratch noises like…”Ch, Ch, Chicka Ch” and learned where to put my hands on the turntable and mixer by watching my Dad practice. ie.Merg - USA Critics would say that your father is too big of an influence and that he is living his dream through you, however you seem well balanced, very happy and satisfied with your life. So is it a hobby or a career plan? Both, it is balanced because of my Dad and Mom. My Dad takes care of all the Djing stuff and my Mom takes care of everything else. What’s your dream? To be the bestest DJ in the Universe. Who are your favorite DJs? What did you feel when you finally met Q.Bert, and when you scratched with him? My favorite DJ’s are My Dad (DJ Akshen), DJ Swamp, DJ Craze, A-trak, The X-ecutioners, and of course the man himself Q-bert. It felt really, really good and I was so excited when I met Qbert and when I got to scratch with him. Are you a DMC DVD nerd? Yes, I have a good memory of all the DMC videos I watch. Dj Q.Bert Izoh -Japan What are your favorite moments in all the DMC video / DVD? Watching DJ Swamp break the Pioneer CDJ 1000 and his records in the 2001 DVD and watching DJ i.e Merge beat juggling and breaking his records in the 2004 DVD. Funniest moment? 1997 World Finals DJ Kid and MC Jack. What do you listen to at the moment? I listen to Hip-hop, Piano music, Drums, and Rock. What are you reading at the moment? In the Land of Peevish Pets, a story in my Reading Mastery book. Your three favorite movies? 1. Clock stoppers 2. The Incredibles 3.The 2004 DMC US Finals DVD for now until I get the 2005 DMC World Finals DVD. Favorite needle? The Q.Bert Ortofon’s How would you describe your style? My style is just whatever. C2C Can you tell us who is who in C2C, how did you guys come together, where you are from and how long you have been into djaying ? C2C consist of four dj’s: ATOM,GREEM,PFEL and 20SYL.We all come from the same city (NANTES) and we know each other for a long time now...we were at high school together and we were friends before starting mixing. 20SYL started in 95’ followed by GREEM and ATOM in 97’. We created c2c at that time. Then PFEL joined us in 2001 as he get into djing in 2000. What does it feel like to have won the World Finals 3 times in a row ? It’s just a great achievement for us to win the title for the third time. You know, it’s always cool to fix a new team record like Craze did in the solo competition. We’re part of the DMC history now ! How did you prepare yourselves for the competition ? Any kept secret to win each year ? We try first to do a kind of brainstorming to know what kind of stuff we’ll play in the show, what will rock the crowd and the judges and then make the difference... This year for example we wanted some latin and black rythms, so we came up with a bossa nova and a blues routine. Then we found some sounds to create those, like a quika, a whistle ,an acoustic guitar for the bossa nova and a Crunchy guitar, some harmonica’s riffs and a bluesmen voice for the blues routine. We choose some patterns and try to find a good balance beetween technicality and musicality. Then we practice till we can perform it perfectly in the dark , hands tied!! No but we don’t have any special recipe or any secret to win each year, we just try to be as musical and original as we can ,that’s it! Your routines, even in competition, are full of musicality, what is your approach on it ? We all love acoustic sounds and music instruments in general. So we try to get original and realistic sounds to recreate a track or to compose any kind of music. This year for the show we played a couple of sounds by ourselves or we asked others musicians to played some stuff as well .Then we pressed it on vinyl to recreate what we wanna do. We used some vintage keyboards like Rhodes, hammonds, Clavinet... we played some guitar and bass riffs and a couple of percussions as well. We try to use our own sounds you know, not just the latest breakbeat release! I think that’s why you can feel the musical aspect very much in our show. Pfel, as you are competiting in solos too, do you find it easier to create solo routines rather working collectively with C2C ? Not easier it’s just really different. Actually there are positive and negative aspects on both works. For example you have to do a lot of concessions in team working as yours or others ideas are not shared by everyone, you have to make choices and discuss every single point to make sure everybody like what we’re doing. This is just up to you in the solo side wich is a bit more «comfortable». But on the other side you have less ideas and possibilities with one brain and two hands rather than four brains and eight hands ...so the routine will be even more complete and well done. So,it’s two different jobs and i really love both...so i think i’ll keep both! What equipment do you use? We all use TTX turntables and Pro SM-1 or DXM mixers from NUMARK. We use ORTOFON needles (either the new Q-Bert which are really good or the golden ones we won at the world’s!) and Sennheiser headphones (HD 25 is the best!). For production we all work with Mac computer on Pro tools or Digital Performer and we use MPC 2000XL by AKAI for making beat, but we’re waiting for the 2500XL now! As we told you before we have also a couple of «classic» instruments as well (guitar, bass ,couple of vintage keyboards and a bunch of percussions). What is your point of view on turntablism French scene ? The turntable French scene is at the fullest for a couple of year now! Every championship since 2000 have crowned a French dj in one category ( Netik and Kodh at the world supremacy,Troubl’ at the ITF and the Beatdown,BNN in team final 2002 and ourselves from 2003 till this year). France is definitly one of the strongest dj nation in the world now but we need more interest from medias and sponsors to keep this movement alive now. New dj’s are coming up and the old ones keep creating and involving into djing so we really need more support to continue this way. What’s next ? Are you touring, do you plan to release a C2C album ? Now we’re starting working on an album for 2006 as well as new breakbeat(Flyin saucer 4!) We have a small tour in Uk in February and March ,we’ll probably go to the Winter Music Conference in Miami as well and some gigs in France of course during the year. Anyway you can check all our moves and news on Ortofon.com or on our label website www.onandon-records.com .There’s also a forum in it so people can speak to us and ask questions. Not only is he responsible for inventing the musical genre called Hip Hop but his pioneering use of the turntables make him The First DJ to play the Turntables as a Musical Instrument thus helping to elevate the status of the DJ to a masterful, artistic position. Grandmaster Flash, you were named the first DJ to use the turntable as an instrument, you host the last MTV Awards with Diddy, a lifetime in between, no? What you’ve been up to? Well, so many things, at the moment I am working on the soundtrack of a video game, on an album, on a syndicated radio show. I’m in the process of writing a book, and of course I have been deejaying a lot. The best gig you ever done? There all are different, there are so many. As a pioneer of the Hip Hop, how do you see the state of this culture nowadays? I think Hip Hop culture has split into different types of Hip Hop, which is wonderful. I had always hope that it would spread around the world, so now Hip Hop is a world culture. What do you listen to at the moment? A bit of everything, I am still learning. I listen to Jazz, Funk, Rap, RnB, Techno…The key thing is to please my audience so I must stay familiar with all type of music. As a DJ I have never just played Hip Hop, I have always played a mixture of music. If you listen to Techno, Drum and Bass or even Rock , you can hear Hip Hop influence, sometime as a sample of music or sometime it’s a drums sample. Tell us about your label? It’s called Adrenaline City Records, I will come out with an Lp of myself and eventually look for other artists. Funniest memory? In the early seventies, I tried to smoke some weed and DJ, and the labels of the records were just moving all over the place, I could not DJ, probably my funniest memory and definitely my worst DJ night. There has been a lot of evolution in the scratch fields, do you follow the Scratch music movement? Some Djs are scratching so well that I look at them as artists and it is an art, which is going to go forward. I’ve seen Q.Bert, the Executioners, A Trak… it’s all very impressive. What are you reading at the moment ? I read books on meditation and books on health. What do you think of the equipment evolution, djs using cds, mp3s…? Modern technology happens, but I still use turntables. Vinyl is very familiar to me and the people want to see me deejay a record, cut it up, and do what I do with it, and see how fast I can get the next record, so when I am performing all these things take place. It’s a bit more work but it is more pleasing to the crowd to see. Your Top Ten tracks of all time ? I can never answer that question, I’ve got over 30 000 records. Who are your favourites DJs? Oh boy, I don’t know there are so many. But if you had to invite 6 to rock your party? Q.Bert, Grand Wizard Theodore, Paul Oakenfold, DJ Demo and Eric Morillo. Your favourite movie of all time ? Animal House. What is the favourite record you made ? Superrappin’ or maybe Adventures of Grand Master Flash on the Wheels of Steel which I still perform part of it at every gig. Favourite needle ? Ortofon, I call it The shorties blue one (i.e. the OM DJ) How would you describe your style ? Multi faceted, I do a little bit of everything during my performances. I have to squeeze 30 years of experience in a two hours session. KENTARO You are the 2002 DMC World Champion, but do you still follow the dj competitions ? I still check out the battles, mainly DMC. It is my roots and I might come back in the near future. Everyone loved C2C’s performance at DMC Japan finals 2005. Great set, but even better set at DMC World finals 2005. That makes me want to come back though. What have you done since this title ? Touring all over the world, lots of festivals, studio times with other artists, making my own beats, etc… coming to Europe. What is behind the concept of your latest release ? I take this as “Ninja compilation”? Ninjatune has been my favorite label and the tunes I picked are just well flow chilly hip hop and breaks, I just wanted to keep the flow from intro till the end, fresh and very headbangable. Do you still work on routines ? Yes. I ve made lots more routines after DMC, I always do some kinds of new routines in my set at gigs. How did you discover scratching ? Well, met with my first turntables when I was 12. since then I’ve been scratching. One night I was watching TV and there was a TV show of DJ Battle and It was really shocking. That is very first reason I started Djing. Are you following that “scratch music scene”: Toadstyle, Ned Hodding, The Birdy Nam Nam, Gunkhole, Noisy Stylus etc…? What do you think about all those bands ? I like the new album of BNN, it is really dope. Melodious. C2C is my fav band as well. Just the quality of their beats and instrumentals are just phenomenal. What is your opinion about that “all scratched” music ? Its just like any other bands. Within the limitation and how you create is most interesting point of turntablism. Are you the best DJ in the World ? I would not say that myself, but everyone do their job, juggling DJs do their job, house DJ just mixes nicely, Mcs rap, and so on. My job is to entertain people and introduce my favorite music with my way of mixing and cuts and juggles musically. I don’t think I m that bad at it! What are your future projects ? I am putting my first album together at the moment. It is coming really nicely and some tracks are with some unique guests from all over the world. Touring all over the world, what are the main differences between Japan and the rest of the world ? Crowds outside of Japan, especially in Europe are really quick reacting on what I do, and they go crazier than Japanese crowds do, but it does not mean that they don’t understand, it is just that Europe has got more agressive people I guess. Japanese music scene is really big, I think UK is big too. What are you listening to ? Hip hop, drum n bass, reggae etc….breaks… What are the internet sites you are regularly checking ? Record shop sites. Your favourite movie ? Not sure. There are so many. Kill Bill is kinda unique even though many people say many different things on this movie. I like it. The favorite club where you played ? mmmm.. all the clubs! (World head quarters) How do you see your future ? Bright, I mean I am very excited about the future. I need more time to do what I wanna do at the moment. So I’ll do one by one. I complete one by one all my tasks. I cant wait to see the future !. Pacha vS Morillo “I’ve used every needle in the world and Ortofon are the ones I like. I actually love them. They’re the only ones I’ll use. And all the DJs love to use Ortofon at the club. Most of the top DJs request them.” Jarrod Khoury, Systems Director, Pacha New York. Pacha, Europe’s most recognized nightlife brand, hits New York. Located on West 46th Street adjacent to the Hudson River, Pacha is a 30,000-square foot nightclub and event space comprised of four levels, each featuring unique decor and varied capacities. World-renowned lifestyle brand Pacha has teamed up with DJ/ producer Erick Morillo to launch Pacha in New York City. Pacha was founded by Ricardo Urgell in 1967 and has since grown in to a global brand that encompasses more than 25 nightclubs, a hotel, restaurants, a record label, radio station, magazine and merchandising. “After 36 years and 25 nightclubs, it has been the dream of Pacha to host a New York venue. We believe New York is the spiritual home of discos and nightclubs and we are happy to be a part of its great history.” says Pacha’s brand director Danny Whittle. “I want this to be a club where the best DJs in the world will come to play on the best sound system in the world,” says Music Director and Co-Owner, Erick Morillo. Notorious for consistently drawing unprecedented crowds to Pacha’s flagship club in Ibiza, Spain, Morillo will take up residency behind the turntables at the new venue on a monthly basis. Frequented by celebrities Pacha has long been a fixture on the international party circuit. The name ‘pacha’ comes from Spanish folklore and roughly translates to “live like a king” and New York’s Pacha will fully embrace that philosophy.
