Introducing Caroline Meynell Winner of the Mary Moser Award 2012 (venues 131 & 57) Caroline trained as a jeweller in her 20s, and practised for 30 years. It wasn’t until an accident caused her to lose the sight in one of her eyes that she had to give up jewellery and began to paint. She largely eschews greens to depict landscapes in blues and earthy pigments. Despite the energy used to create each piece, she paints until she’s exhausted, continually dancing around a canvas laid flat, Caroline’s landscapes are reflective, with soft colours gently infused with light, full of a stillness and peace that draw people in and create a sense of space in busy lives. This annual award was established to honour Mary Moser’s commitment to Artweeks and to help develop the career of a professional artist who has taken up art as a second career later in life. If you have a nomination for this year’s award, then please email [email protected]. SPECIAL EVENTS Paintings by Caroline Meynell, winner of the 2012 Mary Moser Award will be exhibited in Summertown (venue 131) and in the O3 Gallery (venue 57) alongside an exhibition which examines trends and developments in contemporary illustration; how our visual language reflects the meeting of traditional draughtsmanship and emerging techniques such as digital manipulation, and explores what contemporary illustration and animation tell us about 21st century visual consumption. Presented in association with Comma. SPECIAL EVENTS Classes and Workshops We hope you are inspired by the creative talent on display during Artweeks and you may be keen to have a go yourself. Both during the festival and throughout the rest of the year many Artweeks artists and venues offer classes and workshops across Oxfordshire.
