Kansas City's HarleyDavidson plant gets a new seven-year union agreement. Compiled by Diana Rowe With more than 5 months to spare on Monday, February 28th, Union workers at Harley-Davidson's Kansas City plant approved a new labor agreement that will help the company implement a new production system. The new labor agreement is for seven years, beginning August 1 and replaces one that was set to expire in July 2012, with implementation in phases. In the agreement, the Kansas City plant's 685 full-time hourly unionized employees but will most likely be reduced to 540 positions. However, 145 flexible positions (likely union members) will most likely be added to cover increased production or to fill in for other employees on vacations and other absences. Without an overhauled contract, the Kansas City plant might have been relocated to York, PA. Negotiators ironed out the agreement last week, and it was approved by vote on February 28. The agreement included necessary concessions to maintain work in K.C. -“BEST ON similar to what Harley had already negotiated at their Milwaukee and Tomahawk, WI plants. The concessions at the Kansas City facility are expected to provide $15 million in annual savings when fully implemented. The 358,000-square-foot Harley plant near Kansas City International Airport was built in 1998 and produces the Sportster, Dyna and VRSC families of motorcycles. FYI, Harley lost $46.8 million in the fourth quarter last year but for all of 2010 posted a profit of $146.5 million. MOTORCYCLE RIDER NEWS—ENTERTAINMENT MARCH 2011 3 The FlaunT Girls You may have seen them live at the Full Throttle Saloon during the Sturgis Rally or True TV on "Michael Ballard's Full Throttle Saloon" Reality Series, but do you really know what the FLAUNT GIRLS are truly about? The Flaunt Girls are a Spicy, Rock, Burlesque-styled dance troupe of talented women trained in the "Art of the Tease." The Flaunt Team is a unique blend of High Energy Dance mixed with a Burlesque Twist. These professionally trained dancers wow the crowd with flaunt appeal, and their appeal is intensified with those sexy costumes they wear on stage. The Flaunt Girls perform all over the United States, from Bike Shows to the Big Rallies like Street Vibrations, Biketoberfest and the Sturgis Rally at the Full Throttle Saloon, the latter which made them famous. They also have their own Flaunt Theater Show where they perform a full burlesque theater production. Fanny Shakesalot, Mia BigTease, IvannaSpankyou, and the rest of the Flaunt Girls perform to songs such as Big Spender, Fever, Cell Block Tango and Pink Panther. Motorcycle Rider News had the opportunity to speak with the founders of Flaunt, Breawna AKA; Mia BigTease and Angie AKA; Fanny Shakesalot , who had the following to say about Flaunt. Their love of dance and performing led them to the idea of forming Flaunt. Flaunt made their Sturgis debut in 2000 at the Grand Opening of the World Famous Full Throttle Saloon, and have been a part of the party every year since. By “Bubba” 4 MARCH 2011 MRN: What is it that keeps Flaunt going? What keeps us going is our love of dance and our fans. It is Flauntastic! We love bikers! We are also all very close friends and have been performing together for many years. Angie and I originally met in 3rd grade and ended up coaching in college together as well as many years in professional cheerleading. Nichole and Gina have also been with us for a long time and we really are a Flaunt Family. MRN: Beside biker rallies where have you performed? We have performed everywhere we have had the chance. We started as professional cheerleaders and have danced and performed at area events and concerts and even a rodeo or two. Flaunt started as a Burlesque Theater Show in Deadwood at the Saloon 10. We then took our show to The Full Throttle. We still perform the Theater Show and do special Christmas and New Year's Eve performances in the area. MRN: Breawna, what do you like to do in your spare time? I spend time with friends and family. My son is everything to me. He is six so there are soccer games and birthday parties to go to. He is my priority when I'm not at work. With the new season of FTS and my new business ventures, it has been a very busy time with not a lot of spare moments to just kick back. MRN: Angie ,we noted the long hours and hard work you put into the FTS, and Flaunt. When the rally is over, what do you do to relax and unwind? We take about a week off have an end of the Dance Season Party, and then two weeks later are back on the road again headed to Thunder in the Rockies in Loveland CO. We look forward to seeing everyone at this year's Thunder in the Rockies! Both Angie and Breawn invited you to visit their new website theflauntgirls.com. Launched in November, there you will find, updated blogs, Flaunt Merchandise, Flaunt TV and the ladies can add a profile and their pictures so literally anyone can be a Flaunt Girl. The Flaunt Girls are available for bookings and are looking for new businesses to partner with and promote. You can reach BreawnaNylen or Angie Carlson by messaging them at [email protected]. They would love to send you a media kit and give you information on how they can "Flaunt" your event. MOTORCYCLE RIDER NEWS—ENTERTAINMENT MOTORCYCLERIDERNEWS.COM MOTORCYCLERIDERNEWS.COM MOTORCYCLE RIDER NEWS—ENTERTAINMENT MARCH 2011 5 A True Chilling Story - Someone Upstairs is Watching over Us Riders By The Law Tigers America's Injury Lawyers Who Ride As a firm that specializes in motorcycle injuries, we unfortunately see all types of catastrophic injuries including loss of limbs, traumatic head injuries and, of course, riders who perish. We hear all types of tragic stories of human suffering as well as stories of courage and faith. The following story is a true story that was told to the LawTigers by the parents and their son, a young man who was seriously injured in a motorcycle collision. Although the LawTigers have changed the name of our client to protect his real identity, we have not embellished the story in any way or attempted to make it more dramatic than it is. The LawTigers were able to independently verify some of the facts of this story. Jeremy Dale was a 19 year old student from Dallas, Texas attending an out of state college. Jeremy had grown up around motorcycles and spent most of his life riding. Both his mother and father rode motorcycles and had done so for years. Therefore, it was natural that when Jeremy went to college, he brought his Harley- 6 MARCH 2011 Davidson Sportster with him. A woman was talking on her cell phone, not paying attention to her driving, and made a left turn in front of Jeremy. Jeremy had no opportunity to stop or take evasive action to avoid the car making the turn in front of him. As a result, Jeremy violently collided with the rear quarter panel of the adverse driver's vehicle. At the point of impact, Jeremy was thrown more than thirty feet off his motorcycle. The laws of the state where Jeremy was residing did not require that a motorcyclist wear a helmet and Jeremy, unfortunately, was not wearing one on this day. As Jeremy was thrown from the motorcycle, he landed face first onto the roadway. It was later determined that Jeremy had sustained fractures to most of the bones in his face. As Jeremy lay in the roadway unable to move, he was aware of his surroundings and that he had sustained very serious injuries. As with most head wounds, he was bleeding profusely from his head and face. Jeremy recalls that as he lay there, he drifted in and out of consciousness. The first person to appear at the crash site was a middle aged man who was wearing a reverend's collar. He had seen the accident and was a car length behind Jeremy at the time of the collision. He ran to Jeremy who lay face MOTORCYCLE RIDER NEWS—ENTERTAINMENT down in the roadway. He had a blanket and a towel that he had removed from the trunk of this car. He slowly and carefully turned Jeremy over to survey the extent of his injuries. The man realized immediately the seriousness of Jeremy's injuries simply by looking at Jeremy and the amount of blood loss. Doctors would later say that there was no remaining skeletal structure to Jeremy's face. They described his face as a sack of broken bones held together only by the skin of his face. The man wrapped Jeremy's head with the towel. The man propped Jeremy up by placing his arm around the back of Jeremy's neck. He spoke quietly to Jeremy. Jeremy has a very distinct recollection of what the man said to him. The man said, "I am Reverend Lane Smith of the 10th Street Bethany Church. You are going to be just fine. You are God's child and he will not abandon you in your hour of need. I will sit here with you and pray with you while we wait for the ambulance." Jeremy remembers feeling little pain although he realizes that he drifted in and out of consciousness. He remembers each time he regained consciousness looking up and seeing Reverend Smith's face. At some point, he realized that the paramedics had arrived and they were cutting his clothing off him. He recalls Continues on next page MOTORCYCLERIDERNEWS.COM Continued only then did Reverend Smith let go of him, although he remembers him continuing to hold his hand and talking to him. When the paramedics finally began to load Jeremy into the ambulance, he closed his eyes and laid his head back. Jeremy remembers hearing the chilling words that the paramedics said to Reverend Smith, "This one is not going to make it." Jeremy related some time later that he wanted to scream out with all of his being that he was still alive and he was fighting to stay that way. He heard Reverend Smith say, "This boy is going to be just fine." Jeremy closed his eyes and has no other recollection until he awoke in the hospital the following day. Jeremy's parents flew in from Dallas the next day. Over the course of the next week it became apparent that indeed, Jeremy was going to make it although he required several facial surgeries and extensive dental work. Once Jeremy was out of critical condition, he relayed the story of his encounter with Reverend Smith. Indeed, when the LawTigers obtained the ambulance records for Jeremy's case, it indicated that when the paramedics arrived, "the patient was lying supine in the roadway supported by a motorist (clergy)." After hearing from Jeremy how much support Reverend Smith had been to their son, Jeremy's parents decided to visit Reverend Smith and let him know how much his help had meant and that Jeremy was doing fine. They went to see Reverend Smith at the 10th Street Bethany church. Being new to town, they were having trouble locating the church. Finally, they stopped in a church they found at 7th Street and Bethany. The Office was staffed by the proverbial "little old church lady". Jeremy's parents told the woman that they were looking for Reverend Lane Smith of the 10th Street Bethany church and that they were having trouble locating the church. Could she help them? "May I ask what you want with Reverend Smith?" she asked. Jeremy's parents said that "it was a personal matter" that they wanted MOTORCYCLERIDERNEWS.COM to see Reverend Smith about. The church lady looked puzzled and said, "The 10th Street Bethany church has been gone from that corner for years and Reverend Smith passed away over 15 years ago." 1-888-LAWTIGERS (529-8443) www.lawtigers.com Free day trips from Denver compiled by Diana Rowe March often brings the biggest snowfalls in the metro area, but the Denver metro area still offers fun and free day trips even into the spring. But finally they just hopped on the bike to putt away. Then nothing but a dead battery and a bunch of wet clothes. That's when I met the very soaked Brian Hornbuckle up close and personal. If you're a Denver area biker, you've stopped and listened to Brian and his bands many times over the years. He's been playing since 1992 all around town, so yes, his music has caught my attention too. How could it not when he plays all the favorite tunes? Think Hendrix, Zeppelin, Black Crows, Jeff Beck, Larry Graham, Peppers -- blues, rock 'n roll, all oldies but goodies. You'll either kick back and listen or you'll not be able to keep your feet from dancin'. His song list reads like the iPod shuffle: Ain't no SunshineBill Withers; Josie- Steely Dan; Fool In The Rain- Led Zeppelin (and lots of other Zeppelin classics); SmoothSantana; Sunday Morning- Maroon; Just a Little Bit- Van Morrison; Shaky Ground- Temptations; Superstitious- Stevie Wonder; Folsom Prison- Jonny Cash; Come Back Baby- Ray Charles; Day tripper- Beatles - and that's only brushing the surface of their song list. Brian is a confessed gear head, preferring to wrench on his motorcycle himself, which I witnessed when his '96 Harley Softail's battery took a dive. (And yes, he got 'er up and running no problem.) Brian is also a dedicated musician. If he has a gig, not only does he show up, but he shows up on time and early. He still enjoys entertaining, and he's quite happy to play whether it's cold or hot. Brian Hornbuckle has that special talent to be as entertaining with his one-man band antics and soulful voice, as he is when he does gigs with the Brian Hornbuckle Band. The 4-piece entertainment machine includes Guitar - Lead Vocals: Jonny Vaughn, who he's played with off and on since 1988. He met drummer Jimmy Yozell awhile back and even toured Brazil with him. Brian's known his keyboard player Mark since Brian was 3 years old. Mark toured the country with Brian's dad for a band called Dreams. Brief Bike Week History The Daytona Beach Bike Week rally started as the Daytona 200 race on January 24, 1937. This first race was a 3.2 miles (5.1 km) beach and pavement course. It was won by Ed Kretz from California riding an Indian motorcycle with an average speed of 73.34 mph (118.03 km/h). This yearly race took a break from 1942 to 1947 due to World War II. During the years off, an unofficial event was still taking place commonly called Bike Week. In 1947 the official race resumed and gained in popularity. The event was then promoted by the late William France Sr., co-founder of NASCAR. Compiled by Diana Rowe One of the hottest bike weeks in the country kicks off this week, March 4-13 in Daytona Beach, Florida - Daytona Bike Week. You may not have time to load your bike on a trailer or ship it to Daytona, but you can make plans for next year's held March 2-11. Approximately 500,000 people make their way to the rally area for the 10-day event. The festivities include motorcycle racing, concerts, parties, and street festivals. The event is usually held on the first full week of March and contends with the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally as the most popular motorcycle rally in the United States. Just like Sturgis Daytona's streets rumbling with Hogs, especially LAKEWOOD Biketoberfest In 1991, the Daytona Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau created a second motorcycle festival event in October, named Biketoberfest. Biketoberfest is usually scheduled for the weekend immediately following Columbus Day, although some participants arrive on Columbus Day weekend and visit for the entire week. Part of the fun is a twelve-mile ride along a scenic route, known as the Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail.
