Summer tyres 2016
Go all the way
Mastering the extremes
We come from the North. We know and master the
extremes. We know that exceptionally demanding conditions require quick thinking, a relentless fighting spirit
and the ability to cooperate. This recipe is also used to
create the market’s most advanced summer tyres that
master rough roads and heavy weather.
Under the varying Central European conditions, there
is a constant threat of aquaplaning. This makes wet grip
and handling the most important characteristics of a tyre.
Alongside the safety features, economy and driving comfort
are also important aspects of a summer tyre. Nokian Tyres’
premium summer tyres are pleasantly quiet and economical,
without compromising on driving pleasure and safety.
The balanced combination of all these different characteristics
makes our tyres unique and reliable. They will get you there.
Our selection of summer tyres can offer you the tyres you
need for your car and driving style, regardless of whether
you are looking for sporty handling, safety on wet roads or
economical driving under varying conditions.

COMFORT AND SAFETY.
The Driving Safety Indicator (DSI) on the centre rib indicates tread
depth. You can check the amount of remaining tread in millimetres by
examining the row of numbers on the tread. The numbers disappear
as the tyre wears down. When the tread depth is below 4 mm,
a red stripe that indicates low tread depth will appear around the tyre.

MORE KILOMETRES, LESS NOISE.
Silent Groove Design. The circular indentations on the walls of the
longitudinal ribs control the airflow. They prevent the creation of an
unpleasant, howling sound. The design makes driving comfortably quiet.

Your tyre choice matters
Ultimate green safety
Greener mobility and an eco-friendlier future involve all
of us. Fuel consumption is the most significant environmental
impact of your tyres. Lower fuel consumption equals less harmful
greenhouse gas emissions.
Lowering the rolling resistance of tyres is at the core of our development work. A tyre that rolls lighter consumes less fuel, thereby
causing lower carbon dioxide emissions. High-quality raw materials
and natural material choices support our principle of sustainable safety.
The safe characteristics need to remain virtually unchanged throughout
the service life of the product.
Our new product, the Nokian eLine 2 summer tyre, is a green pioneer;
its wet grip and fuel efficiency (rolling resistance) are in the EU tyre
label’s best category, A. The state-of-the-art rolling resistance amounts
to fuel savings of up to 0.6 l /100 km compared to the tyre with the
weakest rating.
We are developing innovative solutions that reduce rolling noise
in order to allow you to enjoy silent and more comfortable driving.
Reducing external rolling noise adds to general comfort in the city
centres and peaceful rural routes alike.

The success story
continues
Nokian Tyres is the northernmost tyre manufacturer in the world,
working relentlessly for safer, more comfortable and eco-friendly transportation – year round. The roots of Nokian Tyres go all
the way back to 1898, when Suomen Gummitehdas Osakeyhtiö
was established. Our factory in Nokia, Finland has stood by the
Nokianvirta river since 1904. Nokian Tyres Plc was listed on the
stock exchange in 1995.
Since the beginning, our careful testing and development has been
leading the way towards safer and eco-friendlier tyres. Our experience
in manufacturing the world’s most awarded winter tyres, the Nokian
Hakkapeliittas, also guarantees your safety when using our advanced
summer tyre range.
2016 marks the 80th anniversary of the first Hakkapeliitta winter tyre.
It was introduced in the early spring of 1936. We will celebrate Hakkapeliitta in many different ways during the year.
For more details about the fascinating story
of the Hakkapeliitta tyres, see our website:

The new Nokian iLine summer tyre rolls pleasantly and
safely in any summer weather. It offers first-class fuel efficiency, which amounts to greener driving for smaller and
mid-sized family cars. The top-notch driving feel remains
stable and reliable even under extreme conditions. The
unique Venturi Grooves effectively prevent aquaplaning
and the pine oil added to the rubber compound maximises
tyre durability.

Dangers of
aquaplaning
In dry summer conditions the driver does not really need to
think about the tyres at all. When a thunderstorm takes you by
surprise and suddenly fills the grooves in the road with water
then aquaplaning is an obvious problem.
The best way to prevent aquaplaning is to use new tyres. Even new
tyres do not completely eliminate the risk of aquaplaning, but it is
possible to control the car as long as you adjust the driving speed to
the conditions.
Lost feel
When there is less than four millimetres of tread in the tyres, the tyres’
wet grip and aquaplaning properties essentially deteriorate; the risk of
aquaplaning, in particular, greatly increases. Furthermore, the breaking
distance is longer and the car will skid easier.
Tests conducted by Nokian Tyres show that with a worn-out tyre (tread
less than 1.6 mm, approximately 5 mm of water on the road), aquaplaning will occur when driving in a curve at the speed of 76 km/h,
whereas the aquaplaning speed for new tyres is 96 km/h.
The high-performance Nokian Line, designed especially
for high-powered cars, masterfully handles the rapidly
changing road conditions in the summer. Tailored for Central European roads, Nokian Line provides the best possible
grip and a precise driving feel, especially for wet roads. The
new innovations, the Cross-block Sipes and surge grooves,
enable Nokian Line to steer precisely even on roads
made slippery by rain. The structural features and tread
compound of the logically behaving Nokian Line have been
tailored to work together and correspond to the different
challenges of the T, H, V, and W speed categories.

Buying summer tyres?
Precision, power
and comfort
Here’s how you can find the best ones for you.
Your car rests on four palm-sized patches that keep
you on the road and in control. Your choice of active
safety equipment is very important. When considering the options, you should ask yourself a few
questions: how much do you drive, what kinds of
roads do you use, and what are you like as a driver:
do you seek the best possible driving comfort, or do
you favour a small fuel bill?
Nokian Tyres’ versatile summer tyre selection offers you
premium performance under varying weather and road
conditions. All of our product development work revolves
around you and all other drivers, whose everyday driving
and safety we want to enhance.
Powerful four-wheel drive vehicles pose tougher demands on tyres
in terms of both performance and structure. SUV tyres must have a
precise driving feel, and they must withstand higher wheel loads
and work reliably under extreme speeds. SUV drivers also value
versatile features, and want their tyres to be comfortable and quiet
like passenger car tyres.
Rely on our test-winning products and enjoy safe driving!
Just choose a tyre that suits your specific requirements!

Take care of your tyres
Useful tips for tyre maintenance
Do tyres need to be run in ?
We recommend tyres to be run in for 500 km after their mounting.
Therefore, avoid strong acceleration, breaking and turning at first.
During the running-in, the tyre grease that is used between the tyre
and the rim in the mounting dries, which makes the tyre remain
tightly in place in relation to the rim. Remember to after-tighten the
nuts/bolts after driving ca. 200 km.
What are the recommended
inflation pressures?
You can find the correct tyre pressure in the vehicle’s manual. The
pressure levels must be inspected by using a calibrated gauge with
cold tyres every three (3) weeks. When the car is heavily loaded,
you need to increase the tyre pressure by 10 –15 per cent. Special
attention should be paid to vans and motor homes with a tyre pressure that should be close to double compared to ordinary cars. Hard
loads require more tyre pressure. Pressure levels of C-tyres targeted
for heavy use are typically approx. 4 – 5.5 bar (400 kPa to 550 kPa).
Remember to check the pressure on your spare tyre regularly too.
Can I drive my winter tyres all year round?
We do not recommend the use of special winter tyres like Nokian WR
A3 and Nokian WR D4 or Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 throughout the year.
Modern winter tyres may wear unnecessarily quickly, particularly on
coarse spring roads. The wear may also be uneven due to unusual
fast wear. Winter tyres should be mounted in the autumn when the
ground freezes and replaced in the spring when the sun is starting to
warm the roads.
DID YOU KNOW?
The location and pressure indicators on
the sidewall information area improve
safety. The information area allows for
recording the correct inflation pressure
and installation location during tyre
change. Safety is improved further by a
new section that can be used to record the
tightening torque of bolts for alloy rims.
We recommend a
minimum groove
depth of
4 millimetres.
Should tyres be rotated
from the front to back?
Drive tyres wear more quickly than free-rolling tyres. We recommend
tyres to be rotated from the front axle to the rear axle ca. every 8,000
km. This way, the tyre wear is evened out and the total driving distance of the tyres is maximised. The rotation direction that is marked
on the tyre must be followed.
How long will the tyres last?
DID YOU KNOW?
DID YOU KNOW?
By giving out information about your
driving conditions, car and driving habits
our tyre selector will find the best tyres
for you.
www.nokiantyres.com/
tyreselector/summer-tyres/
The DSI driving safety indicator
displays the remaining tread in
numbers and safe kilometres.
The numbers fade one at the time
as the tyre wears down. Tyres should
have at least 4 mm tread depth in
order to reduce the risk
of aquaplaning.
The safe service life for tyres is six (6) years. The maximum life is ten
(10) years. Over the years, the rubber compound will harden and the
tyres will lose grip, even if the tyres do not wear out otherwise. The
safe minimum tread depth for summer tyres is 4 mm. Between seasons, the tyres must be stored in a cool, dark and dry space. The tyres
must not touch solvent substances such as oil, gasoline or lubricants.
What if the tyre is damaged?
If a tyre is damaged, avoid driving on an under-inflated tyre. Take the
tyre to a tyre dealer for assessment and repair.
