Throughout this newsletter there
are countless examples of ROTA’s
programs in action, within Qatar
and across Asia. Our projects are
assisting people to build a future
based on hope, where individuals
have access to a quality education
and are given the opportunity to develop their knowledge
and skills. We are indebted to our partners and sponsors
for helping us to make this happen, not only through their
financial contributions, but also through the giving of their
employees’ time and resources.
All of our activities emphasize the need for society to
participate in the development of the country’s society and its
economic facets, and it is through society that we are making
our strongest commitments.
Wheels ‘n’ Heels 2014, ROTA’s largest annual community
event, brought together families of all nationalities in a
fun-filled day, in which they shared their enjoyment in
following a healthy lifestyle, while showing their support
for ROTA’s programs. Our sponsors also participated in the
day, entering teams into the events as well as staffing the
activities. We are grateful for their generosity.
Wheels ‘n’ Heels 2014 will definitely be cherished by
the children joining us as a day on which they enjoyed
themselves and learned about ROTA’s important messages.
Engaging young people of all ages is a key theme for
ROTA. The recently held Empower Youth Conference
2014 provided multiple opportunities for our youth
to develop the qualities necessary to grow their
leadership skills and contribute to society.

ROTA pilots Adult Arabic Literacy Program and
welcomes new season of English teaching
STUDENT VOLUNTEERS HELP WORKERS DEVELOP
language skills
uoyed by the success of its Adult English
Literacy initiative for low-skilled migrant
workers, ROTA has launched an Arabic
version of the course.
Under the ROTA Adult Arabic Literacy (RAAL)
Program, sponsored by Qatar Petroleum, a group
of volunteer trainers are teaching 50 migrant
workers Arabic.
ROTA partnered with Qatar University (QU) and
the Sheikh Abdullah bin Zaid Al-Mahmoud Islamic
Cultural Centre (FANAR) to develop a basic teaching
model. Low-skilled workers employed at QU are
being offered the course over a six-month period.
Prior to becoming trainers, the volunteers
attended a one-day training program organized by
ROTA, and provided by Mohammed Al Haj Mahmoud
B
Behind the program
The RAAL initiative is a result of a survey
carried out by ROTA, which suggested that 55
percent of low-skilled workers did not have
any Arabic literacy skills, while 45 percent of
workers appeared to have a fair degree of
spoken Arabic with no reading or writing skills.
The initiative aims to educate workers in
fundamental modern standard Arabic, which will
also build cultural understanding and tolerance.
Student volunteers taught migrant workers
basic Arabic skills in the program.
Taleb from Al Fanar. At the end of the training, Literacy
Trainers were given a copy of the RAAL curriculum.
Meanwhile, the 2013-2014 ROTA Adult English
Literacy (RAEL) program to help low-skilled workers
improve their English language skills, started with
a ‘Training The Trainer’ course for 36 new volunteer
student tutors. The volunteers attending the two-day
training session, developed in association with Qatar
Milestone Training Solutions, were from Georgetown
University in Qatar, Texas A&M University at Qatar,
Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar, Carnegie
Mellon University in Qatar, as well as ROTA itself.
Qualified Literacy Trainers are now delivering a
specially tailored curriculum to low-skilled workers
employed at Education City universities and ROTA.

Operating in 22 villages in the Kailali
District of western Nepal, ROTA’s ‘Improving
Quality of Education and Building Resilience
in Schools’ is increasing communities’
capacity to withstand natural disasters.
The Vodafone Qatar joint initiative is
carried out with the support of Mercy
Corps, ActionAid Nepal, and other local
groups. The project has improved the
infrastructure of school buildings, which
are often used as safe shelters during
times of crisis. The initiative also coaches
individuals on how to react to reduce risk.
The effectiveness of the program was
witnessed in July 2013 when the far
west of Nepal suffered heavy rainfall.
Shantaram Chaudhary, President, Shree
Shiva Lower Secondary School, explained:
“The Disaster Risk Reduction training
from the project helped us immensely in
reducing the flood’s impact. Apart from
the mock drill, we had also learnt about
the Early Warning System, so when it
started to rain heavily, we got the Likma
River gauge reading so that we could
prepare ourselves.
“Everyone who got this information
was able to escape the worst effects of
the flood, because they had already safely
located their important documents and
other valuable items,” he added. “Mock
drills and the Early Warning System saved
our lives and livelihoods.”

Executive Officer.
ROTA and Qatar Charity commit to
collaborate to support Palestinian students
New agreement will improve education facilities in West Bank
OTA and Qatar Charity have signed
an agreement committing the two
organizations to work together to
improve the quality of education in the West Bank.
Signed on 19 February 2014, by Essa Al Mannai,
Executive Director, ROTA, and Yousuf bin Ahmed
Al Kuwari, Qatar Charity Executive Officer, in the
presence of senior officials of both organizations, the
agreement will lead to improved educational facilities
and teaching capacity for students and their teachers.
Al Mannai explained how ROTA is committed to
supporting those in need in the Arab world with a
quality education and how this goal is mirrored by
Qatar Charity’s ‘Education and Culture’ strategy.
“Continuing educational advancement is
absolutely key to uplift the lives of Palestinians and
with Qatar Charity, we share the same belief that
this project will bring real benefits to schoolchildren
and students – equipping them with crucial skills to
R
help them cope with today’s ever-changing world
and become effective leaders and decision-makers
of tomorrow,” Al Mannai said.
The organizations will work to promote a culture
of reading, sports participation, and usage of the
Arabic language, in an area, which indications show, is
suffering from a significant drop in levels of educational
attainment due to current political and economic strife.
Al Kuwari emphasized that Qatar Charity is pleased
to be part of the agreement. “We are confident that
this partnership will go a long way in expanding our
efforts and create opportunities that will improve the
lives of many people in the quest for a more equal
society, and thereby make a difference.
“This agreement with ROTA will not only help
develop the West Bank’s children and students’
potential, but it will also develop and enhance their
personal, social, and educational skills to give them
a real advantage in life,” he said.

Wheels ‘n’ Heels encourages
families to adopt healthy living
Annual event brings community together in support of
ROTA’s work throughout Asia, while encouraging participants
to pursue more active lifestyle
OTA’s Wheels ‘n’ Heels family fun day has
become a not-to-be-missed annual event
with the 7th edition, on 7 February 2014,
attracting a higher attendance than ever before.
Capturing the essence of community spirit, the event
has grown over the years as more activities have been
added to each edition to engage families, spread the
important message of pursuing a healthy lifestyle, and
showcase ROTA’s educational initiatives across Asia.
The original concept was simple – encourage
families to show their support for ROTA by running,
walking, cycling, or skating a short circuit. From this
idea the current event has grown, and grown, and is
now held at the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) Park.
Supported for the last two years by flagship sponsor
Maersk Oil, the event is hosted with strategic partner
Qatar Cycling Federation.
Essa Al Mannai, Executive Director, ROTA,
emphasized what an honor it is for the organization
to host one of Qatar’s largest annual community
events of the year.
“It was great to see adults and children of all
nationalities enjoying Wheels ‘n’ Heels 2014 and
discovering how exercise and living a healthy
lifestyle can be such great fun,” he said.
“ROTA is proud to bring together thousands of
people to enjoy the entertainments offered while
supporting the need to provide quality education to
48 million children in need across Asia.”
The Wheels ‘n’ Heels event now includes a Kids
Zone with interactive arts space, skills-based
competitions, sports, and fitness activities to inspire
and educate youngsters while they are having fun.
For 2014, children were also issued with stamp cards
for them to get marked as they visited each different
play area. On completing the full games’ circuit and
filling their stamp card, children were presented
with a ROTA gift to mark their accomplishment.
The Childhood Cultural Centre, founded by an
initiative of Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser,
who is also Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, to
encourage, support, and develop social growth in
Qatar, provided books, arts, and crafts materials.
As always, a number of celebrities supported
Wheels ‘n’ Heels, with the 7th edition welcoming the
likes of singer Shamma Hamdan, music sensation
Diana Karazon, as well as Baraem Children’s Channel
presenters and masters of ceremony for the event,
Ahmed Al Mulla and Jihan Arsanious. Inspirational sports
icons included Mahmoud and Abdullah Bo Shri, rally
driver Nada Zeidan, and swimmer Nada Mohamed Arakji.
