hogwash - Harley Owners Group: Atlanta Chapter
July 2008 www.atlantahog.com HOGWASH DIRECTOR’S ARTICLE The Official Newsletter of the Atlanta Chapter, Inc. Chapter Number 0788 As you flip through this month’s HOGWASH, I hope you’ll take a few minutes and read Nancy Hardman’s article. It’s always great to have a member submit an article but one like this is a big part of why HOG is so popular. Family, friendship and knowing that if you have a problem while you out for that ride, someone is there to help. I was fortunate enough to get to go on Scott’s Sticky Fingers Ride (Great Ride by the way) And saw how the people came together, From the group assisting Nancy to the others who patently waited, no one felt the need to take off and leave the group. There were many members along with several guests and everyone was happy to wait and make sure their fellow rider was taken care of before we took off on the next leg of our journey. I am always proud to tell people that I am a member of HOG and especially the Atlanta Chapter, but its situations like this that remind me how great the origination and all the members really are. As you all know, we are always looking for new Road Captains, but we are really in need of Road Captain’s to lead rides through the week and some Sunday, after church, ride. The Wednesday ride I lead in April had 14 people along. All you need is your Harley and the desire to lead your fellow members on some memorable rides. If you are unsure where to go or how to get there, Diana and I would be happy to get you started. All you have to do is contact either me or Diana and we’ll hook you up. In no time you will be leading people on rides they will be talking about for years to come. I hope to see you all out at one of our events soon, you make the chapter what it is, so come out and help keep it the best chapter in these here parts. It’s the greatest pleasure in being a member. Meeting and making new friends on every ride is one of the best parts of the ride! We had some very enjoyable rides in May and June. The July calendar is looking very full and adventurous. It was great to spend Memorial weekend with so many of my riding buddies. We all did so much riding. It was great. Sticky Fingers was a wonderful ride both there and back. The Riders Resort ride was awesome. Too bad I can’t tell you what happened there, but what goes on at the bon fire stays at the bon fire! However, it was great to hang with some wonderful friends. Join us for any of the upcoming July rides, we have several new road captains leading their first rides this month, they would love to have a fun group to ride with. See you on the Cloudland Canyon, Pizza Farm, 29 Dreams, Biker for Boobs, or Copperhead lodge Ride. Being a Road captain can be very rewarding in so many ways! It doesn’t have to be a big ride or a long ride, just enjoy the ride! Happy Trails, Diana Bodden, Head Road Captain Shane’s Social Chris Robey, Director Please join me on Tuesday, July 22 for a Shane’s Social at 3894 Due West Road, Marietta, GA. We will have some great BBQ and wonderful fellowship and even a discount. Get your Rider’s Rewards points and have some fun. Look forward to seeing you. Here’s the plan, we will meet at the regular time 7:00 P.M. at the pavilion, if you can get there a little early. We will have a quick 15 minute meeting and safety briefing. Just like the 50/50 you can buy your bug target for $5:00 you can buy as many bug targets as you would like. Come in your car on your bike, whatever. Put your target on the front of your bike, or car. We will then leave the pavilion and take a scenic ride over to Taco Mac in Douglasville. Whoever has a bug or the most bugs in the center of their target wins. So that we have an independent judge, I am going to approach Randy Snyder of Full Throttle to judge for us. Once at Taco Mac we will be at the Friendship table in the back of the restaurant. There we will have our usual door prizes. It will basically be more of a social event rather than a dull old meeting. Also, if you can’t make it to the pavilion just meet us at Taco Mac, I would anticipate being there no later than 8:00 P.M.. Can’t wait to see everyone? Saddle & Paddle Ride I plan on having an overnight ride to the Natahala Gorge on Saturday, August 2. We will meet at the pavilion around 7:30 A.M. and leave at 8:00 A.M. we will ride to Natahala and once there we will raft down the Natahala river. It’s about a two-hour float. When we finish there, we will ride to a hotel in the area and spend the night. On Sunday morning we will get up and ride some of the wonderful roads in the area, possibly the Cherohala Skyway and then head back home. I need to hear from anyone interested so I can arrange to block some rooms in the area. So please contact me as soon as possible at either 404-502-2380 or more so [email protected] . Please let me know. Bobby Conway, Assistant Director SAFETY OFFICER’S ARTICLE Don’t Get Spiked! Today with the leash laws on dogs in force, one would think he would not be chased or attacked by “Spike” while riding his/her bike. It happens, especially on rural roads. This is a hazard that causes accidents frequently. With this problem lurking on the side of the road waiting to spring into action, what should one do short of using pepper spray? The preferred method is to change speed to throw “Spike’s” timing off and get him confused. It will cause the dog to overshoot the front tire. One must be careful not to run over him in front of the motorcycle! Never kick at a dog. You could lose control of your bike, or the dog could grab your pants’ leg causing you to fall. Just remember—don’t get spiked! Jim Byrd, Safety Officer A Big Thank You! Noel and I have been riding with the Atlanta Chapter HOG for five years now. I always knew riding with the chapter was safe because there is safety in numbers. However, I did not realize the full advantage of riding with the chapter until today. Riding with the chapter has many advantages other than the friendships we develop over the years, it has members who are there when you need assistance. For any member, especially a women riders there are so many advantages of riding with a group. Today, after leaving Sticky Fingers for our Memorial Day ride, my bike would not crank. Thanks to Scott, Andy, Skeeter, John and Noel, they were able to get my bike cranked so I could ride it home. Karen and another guy (I do not know his name) helped by holding my saddle bags and battery covers while all the guys tried everything to get my bike to crank. Thanks to everyone, the day was not blanketed with the remembrance of my bike stalling and Noel and I were able to complete the ride. As I write this note, Noel has just found and corrected the problem with my bike and I am ready for the next ride with our chapter, The Atlanta Harley Owners Group. Thanks again for everyone who helped and those who waited in the hot sun on me.
