and Chair of the Board of Directors
Dear Friends,
Child’s play. Two small words often used to denote something considered simple, obvious, or trivial. Yet it turns out
that child’s play is anything but…significant evidence from research and evaluation demonstrate that child’s play is,
in fact, crucial to the successful social, emotional, physical and intellectual development of our children.
At Port Discovery, we understand that a child’s early years are more important than any other. Play serves a vital
role in building the foundation for learning and opens children’s eyes to the possibilities of the world around them.
Exposure to quality play-based learning from an early age leads to both short- and long-term positive outcomes
for all children, especially those with high needs. Those outcomes include improved school readiness and success,
increased high school graduation rates, and increased college attendance and completion rates.
Port Discovery has a history of creating innovative, award-winning programs and exhibits that promote learning
through purposeful play and that fully include our diverse society in terms of heritage, ability, gender and family.
By focusing on creative play, both independent and guided, Port Discovery inspires creative thinking and problem
solving — the very skills required for success in the 21st century.
At Port Discovery, play equals learning.
In 2012, with that philosophy in mind, the Museum continued its efforts to bring the best informal learning
opportunities to the children of Maryland and beyond:

Port Discovery becomes the first children’s museum in the nation to receive Nano, a mini-exhibition from the Nanoscale Informal Science Education Network that invites visitors to examine the world of nanoscale
science, engineering, and technology
STEM learning opportunities are expanded with NanoFabulous, a mini-exhibition — developed by the
University of Maryland, Materials Research Science and Engineering Center — that helps elementary school
students understand how scientists work at the nanoscale level
Port Discovery expands its Military Appreciation Program, providing free admission to military families and partnering with the U.S.O. to include children’s cards and crafts in care packages
The Museum offers additional Discovery Days and Discover Me Days, which provide free access for children with
special needs
The Museum launches a new permanent exhibit — Kick It Up! brought to you by UnitedHealthcare, designed to
fight childhood obesity by promoting physical activity, wellness and prevention

We believe in the Power of Play.
Throughout the United States, a new emphasis is being placed on the importance and value
of play. Play is critical to childhood development and learning. Play strengthens the bonds
between children and their families, caregivers, and teachers. Play promotes critical thinking,
communication, problem solving, and collaboration, often referred to as 21st century learning
skills. Play contributes to the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being of children
and youth.
Research proves that play:
• builds ability to solve problems, negotiate rules, and resolve conflicts
• develops confident, flexible minds that are open to new possibilities
• develops creativity, resilience, independence, and leadership
• strengthens relationships and empathy
• helps grow strong healthy bodies and reduces stress
In short, play is essential to the healthy development of each and every child, and lays the
foundational skills for lifelong success in a world that is increasingly complex, competitive,
and interconnected.

Port Discovery is dedicated to providing high quality exhibits, programs, and creative learning
opportunities for children from birth to age 10, with a continued emphasis on early childhood. Each
programmatic year begins with the solicitation of input from experts in the fields of education, science,
research, and child development that guides educational content throughout the Museum. On-going
guidance is provided by experts sitting on our Museum Education Advisory and Health Advisory
Councils. At Port Discovery, learning is cross-disciplinary; thus, subjects such as science, math, literacy,
visual and performing arts, and healthy living are woven into learning experiences throughout the
Museum.

Connections
As educators, researchers and community leaders
discuss the challenges facing education today, two
factors have emerged as critical to academic success:
• Parents/caregivers are an integral part of the
learning process for children.
• Effective educational strategies involve
community partnerships that offer diverse
experiences, expertise and resources.
Port Discovery successfully connects with parents,
caregivers, teachers and community organizations
to put the “Power of Play” into action. Our programs
and exhibits provide learning experiences and
environments that are grounded in children’s
interests, incorporate multiple learning disciplines,
and engage children as hands-on, active learners who
learn best through play.
Parents
For parents and caregivers we provide an exceptional
learning environment packed with a variety of
developmentally appropriate programs and materials,
model engagement and educational activities, and
connect visitors with community resources.
Schools
For teachers, we provide out-of-school active learning
environments and programs that reinforce in-school
activities. School programs include guided visits,
afterschool and outreach programs.
Community Partners
Providing the highest quality programs for our visitors
requires collaboration with leaders and advocates
in education, science, health, child development and
disability awareness.

This innovative partnership brings together
parents of young children and child
development experts in our Tot Trails exhibit,
designed for children three and under.
Parents learn about the latest research in
child development, receive expert advice,
and engage in personal exploration of their
children’s purposeful play and learning.
Towson University
Port Discovery and Towson University have
launched a major collaborative initiative
to establish The Children’s Learning Lab.
This partnership is designed to develop,
implement, and assess learning models and
exhibits.
PACT: Helping Children with Special Needs
Our partnership with this Kennedy Krieger
Institute affiliate helps the Museum meet the
ever-growing demand for programs serving
parents and educators interested in the
healthy development and well-being of
young children with disabilities.
University of Maryland’s Materials Research
Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC)
MRSEC funded, designed, and fabricated
NanoFabulous, creating a unique
nanoscience laboratory experience for our
visitors. MRSEC’s partnership brings students,
scientists, and educators together to explore

Accessibility
As a key informal educational resource, Port Discovery
is accessible for all children regardless of age, ability, or
socio-economic status. At Port Discovery children play
together, at their own pace, in developmentally appropriate
ways as they explore our safe, fun environment and
participate in our programs.
School and Family Access
Reaching out to children from underserved communities is central to
Port Discovery’s mission. Of the more than 35,000 school visitors this
year, over 11,000 students and chaperones received free or reduced
admission through our School Access Program, primarily those in Title I
schools. Through our partnerships with the Maryland State Department
of Education (MSDE) Family Support Services Network, we provide free
Family Access Memberships and free one-day admissions for underserved
families throughout the region.
Discovery Days/Discover Me Days
Dedicated to students with disabilities, Discovery Days provide a
nurturing environment for children with special needs. Discover Me Days
offer inclusive programming for children of all abilities. To accommodate
growing demand, in 2012 Port Discovery offered four Discovery Days and
seven Discover Me Days, serving over 4,300 guests.
Countdown to Kindergarten
This annual event encourages school readiness skills in children about
to enter kindergarten while providing parents with information and
resources to prepare for school registration, including health care
screenings and free immunizations. In 2012, Countdown to Kindergarten
included 1,000 free admissions to kindergarten bound students and
caregivers who reside in Baltimore City.

Target Family Fun Nights
Through generous support from Target, Port Discovery hosts Target Family Fun
Nights, where general admission is $2 per person from 4 pm – 7 pm on the third
Friday of every month. In 2012, more than 9,600 guests took advantage of this
great offer.
Wonderful Wednesdays and Littles’ Days
On Wonderful Wednesdays the Museum books only school groups from Pre-K
through 1st grade. On the 2nd Saturday of each month, families enjoy Littles’
Days, featuring age-appropriate creative-arts-based programs. Almost 29,000
guests attended these popular days dedicated to our youngest visitors.
Military Appreciation
Port Discovery is proud to recognize the courage and commitment of our
military personnel. In honor of the brave men and women defending our
freedom and our great nation, Port Discovery provides free admission to military
members and their children from November through May, culminating with a
Salute the Troops event on Memorial Day weekend. Additionally, the Museum
offers free family memberships through partnerships with Fort Meade and
Aberdeen Proving Ground.

hours to share this special day together.
Imagine my surprise when I arrived at Port
Discovery and was thanked for my service
and offered free admission for my family.
The money we saved can now be used to
treat them to a nice dinner and/or just

Programs
Every day at Port Discovery is packed with programs and activities designed
to delight and educate our visitors from birth to 10 years of age. Programs
developed by our staff of professional educators combine a multidisciplinary approach using storytelling, writing, music, dance, arts and
crafts, and games to foster creative expression and to strengthen artistic,
reading, writing, math¸ science, communication and problem-solving skills.
Among our most successful programs:
ArtVentures
In this 10-week after-school enrichment program students, primarily those
attending Title I elementary schools, learn core values such as courage,
integrity, commitment, determination, teamwork and citizenship.
Mother Goose on the Loose
and Jingle Jangle Music Time
Early childhood programs delight early learners and their caregivers with
stories, songs, and interactive play, while building early language skills.
Talking About Tots
New in 2012, this child-centered story time is followed by parent education
discussions with child development experts from Kennedy Krieger Institute.
Healthy First Saturdays
Our monthly community health fair instills in children and families the
fundamental components necessary to live a healthy and balanced life.
The Money Game and Build Your Own Nest Egg
Financial literacy programs provide the basic tools, information, and
opportunities necessary to practice healthy financial decision making.
Pop Up Science and Alice in Nanoland
Port Discovery has become a leader in the mid-Atlantic region in engaging
and educating young children on the basic concepts of science, technology,
engineering and math (STEM).
STEM in Spring
This week-long period of special programs is dedicated to STEM learning.

Exhibits
Kick It Up! brought to you by UnitedHealthcare,
opened in June 2012. This new soccer and games
stadium, complete with electronic score board and
goals, offers hands-on programs to get children’s arms
and legs moving and hearts pumping.
Tot Trails is a learning environment where young children explore and
learn about their world and parents learn about their children through
interaction and observation.
Two science exhibits – NANO, a mini-exhibition produced by the
Nanoscale Informal Science Education Network, and NanoFabulous,
provided by the Materials Research Science and Engineering Center
(MRSEC) at the University of Maryland – provide interactive experiences
that help children and their families understand the science of things too
small for the eye to see .
In the Royal Farms Convenience Store and Fill’er Up Station exhibit,
children learn how to make healthy choices in a convenient world.
Children are challenged physically and mentally to climb, slide, and scale
rope bridges in KidWorks, a three-story urban tree house.
Pretend play rules the day in Tiny’s Diner, where children explore
cooking, serving, and managing a restaurant.
The Oasis offers quiet space for family games and reading.
Adventure Expeditions recreates a 1920’s archaeological search for the
Pharaoh’s tomb.
StudioWorkshop features activities and programs to inspire each child’s
inner artist.
Wonders of Water helps children understand human interactions with
water in fun, exciting and interactive ways.
Children use detective skills as they follow clues to solve a missing
persons’ case in Miss Perception’s Mystery House.
Traveling Exhibits
In 2012, the Museum hosted blockbusters TINKERTOY®: Build Your
Imagination™, Adventures with Clifford the Big Red Dog™, and The
Adventures of MR. POTATO HEAD.

Each spring, Port Discovery celebrates the Power of Play
with Play It Forward, the Museum’s annual fundraiser.
Adult guests enjoy a variety of fun activities that
demonstrate the educational value of Port Discovery’s
informal learning environment and discover how the
Museum’s many programs connect purposeful play and learning.
They also take pride in knowing that their support of Play It Forward
benefits the Museum’s School and Family Access programs, which
provide free or reduced admission for children and caregivers from
economically challenged communities, children with special needs,
and military families.
Central to this festive celebration is the Great Friend to Kids Award.
Presented by select children’s museums throughout the nation and
nationally by the Association of Children’s Museums, this award
recognizes those who have made significant and outstanding
contributions to strengthening education and advancing the interests
of children.
In 2012, Port Discovery was proud to recognize McCormick &
Company, Inc. as the Museum’s Great Friend to Kids. In addition to the
company’s outstanding support of Port Discovery’s Healthy Families –
Healthy Communities Initiative, McCormick is a generous partner with
education, health, human services and civic organizations throughout
Maryland and around the world.
