Welcome to the Haines Borough &
the Southeast Alaska State Fair!
It’s hard not to love the Fair—in fact, it’s safe to say
many of us have an enduring “Love A Fair” with this
time-honored tradition. At the Fair, we meet with old
friends and make new ones, enjoy excellent entertainment
and great food, spend time with family, marvel at exhibits created by our
neighbors from around the region, participate in exciting contests, and
shop at unique vendor booths. Year after year, the Fair surprises with new
things do, to see, and to learn. It’s no wonder we love the Southeast Alaska
State Fair! Enjoy!

Curtis Salgado will bring the BLUES to Southeast
Alaska on Friday night! Well known as a legendary
blues man from Portland, OR he plays harmonica
and fronts his own band as lead vocalist. Salgado has
been nominated for four of the Blues Foundation’s
2009 National Blues Awards, including Soul Blues
Male Artist of the Year and Album of the Year for
his album, Clean Getaway. In 2010, Salgado won the
Foundation's Male Artist of the Year award. Curtis
Salgado grew up in Eugene, Ore. listening to jazz,
and to his father, an aspiring singer of classical
music. His ambitions coalesced when, at age 12, he
saw Count Basie’s band perform. Curtis became a
part of the burgeoning Northwest blues scene,
eventually hooking up with up-and-coming guitarist/
vocalist Robert Cray. The
pair recorded the album
Who’s Been Talking. Salgado
also sat in with the likes of
Muddy Waters, Bobby
“Blue” Bland, Albert Collins
and Bonnie Raitt. Aside from
being a tremendous
vocalist, Curtis is one of the
finest blues harmonica
players in the country. In
1979, when John Belushi was
filming Animal House, he
caught Curtis’ act and liked
what he heard. Curtis took
the actor under his wing and
schooled him on blues Hillstomp
history, which Belushi
soaked up like a sponge. He used a good portion of
Salgado’s show as the basis for the Blues Brothers
act he and Dan Akroyd put together. The first Blues
Brothers album was dedicated to Curtis. From 1984
to 1986, Salgado fronted Boston’s Grammy-winning
"Roomful Of Blues" before returning to Portland
where he formed The Stilettos, who toured nationally
with such acts as Steve Miller and The Doobie
Brothers. He even did a stint as lead vocalist with
Santana in the 1990’s. After three critically-
acclaimed solo albums with Shanachie
Entertainment, Clean Getaway may be the
breakthrough that Curtis has been working toward.
Hillstomp will get Haines stompin’ when this
Portland, OR junkbox blues duo takes the stage.
Infamous for digging through the dumps and
forgotten backwoods of American music, Hillstomp
recycles traditional elements into a refreshing and
distinctive brand of do-it-yourself hill country music.
North Mississippi trance blues, a bit of Appalachia,
and a dash of punkabilly come clanging and tumbling
from assorted buckets, cans and BBQ lids, all
drenched in rambunctious slide guitar. Somehow it
works. Despite their homemade instruments and
novel approach, Hillstomp is no novelty act. Don’t
expect your feet to
get
any
rest,
because these guys
are gonna keep your
feet stompin’ all
weekend long!
The .357 String
Band
Forgoing

.357 String Band
plays with all the fire
and fury of Rock &
Roll. Anything but
derivative, The .357 String Band pays homage to
both the dark roots of Americana - the fatalistic
murder ballads, sneering Outlaw Country and
unforgiving Gospel - as well as their own background
coming of age in Milwaukee’s Punk and Rockabilly
scenes. The result is a faster, meaner folk music something the band calls “Streetgrass.” Impossible
to pin down to any one genre, The .357 String Band

styles with rock. Traveler’s sound is an innovative,
new fusion of world music and rock. Using traditional ethnic instruments combined with all the
power of a full blown rock band, their performances
are intense, exotic and adrenaline-driven. The real
magic of a Traveler show is in the connection they
make with the audience. They give a high energy,
passionate performance that draws the audience
in. People are always moved to their feet and drawn
closer to the stage to be part of the experience.
Scott Jeffers is composer and band leader. His
Lebanese heritage and American upbringing has
inspired his vision to fuse elements of ancient ethnic music with rock.
He has traveled extensively through foreign lands
to gather inspiration for the Traveler project. Composing most of his songs while surrounded by the
people, sounds, sights, smells and landscape of
these faraway places brings a true authenticity to
the fusion. Known for his fiery and passionate violin
and vocal performances, Scott’s commanding presence onstage adds to the trademark power of the
live Traveler shows. He also brings traditional instruments from his journeys to the stage: Bouzouki,a
traditional Greek stringed instrument, and an Arabic Oud, an ancient predecessor to the guitar.
Seeing this group live is a truly rich and wonderful
experience to be enjoyed by the whole family.

Deering & Down pair sturdy, sweet female vocals
with clang-and-twang guitar textures. One can
imagine the rich vocals, reminiscent of Fleetwood
Mac’s Stevie Nicks and Margo Timmins of the
“Cowboy Junkies,” paired with classic strings of Ike
Turner, Keith Richards and Hubert Sumlin. Had
Deering and Down only been looking for the most
expedient route to stardom, they most likely would
have never set up headquarters in a small town in
Alaska. As fate would have it, at the age of 16,
Canadian-born Lahna Deering found her way up
north, where she met and befriended rock and roll
journeyman Rev. Neil Down. Based in the town of
300 residents, Deering and Down wrapped up a
winter’s worth of work even further north at remote
studio in the Yukon Territory. There they recorded
their first album together, “Coupe de Villa.” Now
headquartered in Memphis, Tenn., Deering & Down
are back in the North to get you groovin’ and
shakin’.

Sasquatch Prom Date

into Whitehorse sporting a

threw on her prom dress and
Sasquatch Prom Date took
the stage.Their jumpin’ tunes
appeal to everyone from
underage punkers to elderly
grandparents reminiscing
about poodle skirts and
saddle shoes. The band’s oldtime rockabilly jive comes
alive with retro guitars,
ribbon mics and Keevil’s
1950s upright bass. Vocal
yelps, walking basslines, a
groovy backbeat and
scorching guitar riffs evoke
images of drag strip races, Flamebuoyant

fountains. The music has a
catchy simplicity with a psychobilly undercurrent.
Open the frosty bar door at 40 below and the
sudden onslaught of ’50s rockabilly draws even the
most reticent woolly bushmen onto the dance floor.
Fans have started coming to performances dressed
for the prom. It’s hard-driving, sweaty rockabilly all
night long.
Nicole Edwards and the Joy Seekers “Yukon's

love and talent for music to every project in which
he’s involved. Nicole’s ability to sink her voice to the

The Hi-De-Ho’s Hailing from as far away as Heidi’s
house on the state park road in south Haines, this
band of local bandits plays an eclectic mix of 30’s
and 40’s swing and jazz, timeless blues, and noncontemporary favorites. Featuring lots of neighbors
and friends (or soon to be), this band will swing you
up to the dance floor.
Sweet Sunny North Square Dance with Sweet
Sunny North! These familiar Haines maestros have
been playing Old Time music of the sweet sunny
south for square dancers at both ends of the Lynn
Canal for years. Len Feldman, Katya Kirsch, Burl
Sheldon, Tom Heywood and friends will join with
Haines’ own good-time caller, Gene Kennedy, to
provide a darn good excuse to get out and dance.
No experience necessary!
Julia & Greg Julia's powerful vocals will give you
goosebumps, paired with skillful guitar work by
Greg Horner. This duo is sure to surprise and please
fairgoers.
The Fishpickers play traditional acoustic instruments: fiddle, mandolin, banjo, upright bass, and
washboard. The group is made up of local fishermen
and artists who work the fishing nets and stormy
seas on the Alaska coast, working hard in the
summers, playing hard in the winters. These musical
artisans travel and play their very own unique style
of music: Old Time Texas Fiddling and Old Time
Banjo Rapping, currently playing with the Bavarian
Double Bass and the New Orleans Creole Scrub
Washboard! If you want to have a good time, kick
up your heels and swing your gal, don’t miss the
FISHPICKERS, because they’re having a good time
too.
Burl Sheldon A Haines guitarist and singer/
songwriter, has been performing for 27 years. He’s
opened for The Wilders, Laura Love, Livingston

live performances have been aired on the syndicated radio shows River City Folk and West Coast

Original Movie
“Smokin’ Fish”
Shows daily at the Photographer’s
Building in Dalton City.
Cory Mann is a quirky Tlingit businessman hustling to make a dollar in Juneau,
Alaska. He gets hungry for smoked
salmon, nostalgic for his childhood and
decides to spend a summer smoking fish
at his family’s traditional fish camp. The
unusual story of his life and the untold
history of his people interweave with the
process of preparing traditional food as
he struggles to pay his bills, keep the IRS
off his back, and keep his business afloat.
By turns tragic, bizarre, or just plain ridiculous, Smokin’ Fish tells the story of
one man’s attempts to navigate the messy
collision zone between the modern world
and an ancient culture.

RECYCLING
CLING and COMPOSTING
RECY
air
at the F
Fair
Haines Friends of Recycling volunteers help make the Fair a “Green” event through
their recycling and composting program. In 2011, you’ll see HFR’s new recycling containers marked for #1 plastics and aluminum, and composting containers for food waste and
compostable service ware (plates, cups, and silverware) in the center of the Food
Vendor area.
HFR worked with food vendors to encourage them to purchase compostable
products for food service. Ask vendors if you aren’t sure if their service ware can
be composted.
HFR sends aluminum and #1 plastics to a center that processes them for reuse.
Food and compostable serviceware compost in bins, quickly breaking down into
rich, dark soil.
See HFR volunteers at their booth to learn more about recycling and composting –
including a demo compost bin, and how to implement recycling and composting at
an event.
Thanks for supporting the Fair’s efforts to “Go Green” by separating trash from
recyclables and compostables when you finish eating!
