To commemorate Don’t mess with Texas® (DMWT) upcoming 30th anniversary, DMWT is
partnering with the Boy Scouts of America groups across the state to emphasize the
importance of a clean-litter-free environment.
A partnership between Don’t mess with Texas and the Boy Scouts will create a strong, sustainable experience as
well as, an example for other youth organizations to follow by pitching in and doing their part. DMWT has an annual
Trash-Off event for which the Boy Scouts are encouraged to participate in as part of this partnership. In addition, this
year we will have various events across the state the troop can participate in.
BENEFITS:
Trash-Off Event
 For participating in a Trash-Off event, troops have the opportunity to earn a
special 30th Anniversary DMWT patch for participating in the clean-up event(s).
o Last year, in partnership with Keep Texas Beautiful and the Adopt-aHighway groups, there were 235 organized trash pick-ups across the
state; more than 30,000 volunteers; 3,709 miles of highway cleaned;
resulting in 1.4 million pounds of litter collected.
o Public relations announcements will be going out regarding partnership and litter clean-up
activities.
Trash and Treasure Hunt:
 Trash and Treasure Hunt events will be scheduled April through August. These events will be scheduled in
partnership with Keep Texas Beautiful Affiliates and area Convention and Visitor Bureaus. These will consist
of a clean-ups, games and prizes at various locations across the state.
o Promotional opportunities at each event.
o Scouts have the opportunity to set up a booth.
o Promoted on media relations materials and press events.
GOALS: Increase the number of youth keeping Texas beautiful, further reducing the likelihood of children
developing the bad habit of littering as they get older. This partnership will increase awareness, reduce the amount
of litter across the state, set the example that at any age, everyone makes the difference in keeping our environment
litter free, and educate the public on the cost of litter pick-ups, youth and volunteer programs to help keep Texas
beautiful!
HISTORY: In 1986, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) launched the Don’t mess with Texas (DMWT)
as a signature campaign designed to reduce litter on state maintained roadways. It is now one of the most
recognized and well regarded slogans in the world.
TxDOT has a three prong approach to litter prevention, included are the “Don’t Mess with Texas” public awareness
campaign, the Adopt-a-Highway program, and a grassroots partnership with Keep Texas Beautiful, Inc. All three work
towards a litter-free environment.

APRIL 22 – 24, 2016
Parent-n-Pal is an action-packed weekend camping experience
for a Cub Scout and his parent/partner at a Scout camp, doing fun activities like shooting sports such
as BB Guns and archery, games, horseback riding and more! It is the perfect outdoor experience for
all Cub Scouts. All meals and program are provided for you – you only need to bring your own tent,
sleeping bag, flashlight, camp chair and personal camping gear.
The cost is $60 per Person*. Cost covers four meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner Saturday and
breakfast on Sunday), a patch and all activity items.
*Scholarships available upon request (deadline April 15, 2016)

Live Scouting’s Adventure It’s here! The 2017 National Jamboree will be held at The Summit Bechtel Reserve located on the New River and nestled in the West Virginia Mountains. Circle Ten Council has the largest contingent of Scouts and Leaders attend in the whole United States and we would like to offer you the opportunity to be a part of this once in a lifetime event, where you will join more than 30,000 Scouts from all over the country as they find out first hand what it’s like to Live Scouting’s Adventure! Circle Ten Council has 17 Troops and 1 Crew reserved. Each unit consists of forty participants, including 4 adult leaders and 36 youth who travel together. Leadership opportunities will be afforded to the troops that can recruit the most Scouts to attend the Jamboree. DO NOT FORGET the Position of Responsibility of the Troop Outdoor Ethics Trainer
that youth can take and use for the Eagle Rank application. BSA requires that youth
serving the position of responsibility of OE/LNT Trainer for the unit MUST be 14 or
older and have the LNT Trainer Certification provided by these 16 Hr courses. This
POR is not an elected position but the youth will be appointed by the
SPL/Scoutmaster.

Wood Badge is for You
All of us understand how critical proper training is for adult leaders and many of
you have already taken part in many of the opportunities available at the District
and Council levels. We are a better because of it, and our youth have benefitted
from your commitment - thank you.
But please take a moment to review the Wood Badge opportunities coming up to consider attending or reaching
out to others to attend this world-class program. It matters not that you’re part of the Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Venture or Varsity programs or are a new or experienced leader. What does matter is your desire to become better
leaders so our youth can become better Scouts and young men and women.
Why Attend
Regardless of which course you attend, you will take part in an outstanding program which emphasizes leadership development and working with others. This is less about camping, hiking and outdoor skills than it is about
a world-class program which helps adult leaders find out the best about themselves. They learn to find the best in
others and acquire the skills and techniques to make it happen.
The only prerequisites to take Wood Badge is that you have completed training specific to your registered adult
leadership position, Youth Protection Training, and have a desire to improve Scouting. There is no specific time
in any position required, nor are camping skills.
Reflecting the best of nearly a century of Scouting experience, the course draws upon the most current leadership models used by corporate America, academic circles, and successful outdoor organizations throughout the
country. It builds on the best traditions and experiences of Wood Badge; and draws from a wide range of sources
within and beyond the bounds of Scouting to present the latest in leadership theory and team development.

Dallas Woods & Waters Foundation
The Woods and Waters Foundation (WWF) is an IRS 501(c)(3) charitable
organization which works closely with the Dallas Woods and Waters Club
(DWWC) to establish mutually compatible charitable goals. Their mission is
to ensure the future of the great outdoors through conservation, preserving
wildlife, restoring habitats, and educating youth in the outdoor disciplines
and the preservation of our natural resources. They also strive to develop
charitable contributions and gifts in order to further our mission and to assist
other charitable organizations with similar goals and objectives.
WWF offers $100 donations for assistance on Eagle Scout Service Projects.
They require a written request describing the project and the board will select
one Scout each month to receive $100 for use on their project. WWF only
asks that the Scout submit an article and pictures of the completed project for
their use in upcoming issues of the DWWC monthly newsletter. Request should be sent to:

Nowhere in the rules does it require the beneficiary of an Eagle project to be human.
Good thing, because an Eagle candidate from Texas has completed an impressive
Eagle Scout service project to benefit the Greyhound Adoption League of Texas. It
was the first time the agency had partnered with a Boy Scout for a project.
Ross R. of Circle Ten Council’s Plano, Texas-based Troop 1000, organized an
adoption event and raised awareness in his community about retired racing
greyhounds. He also held a collection drive for dog toys, treats and towels for the
dogs in foster care at this nonprofit corporation that has assisted 2,700 greyhounds
to date.
This great project is another reminder that an Eagle project doesn’t have to be
“permanent” to leave a permanent legacy. In other words, it doesn’t need to leave
behind something physical, like a bridge, to have a lasting impact on the young man’s
community.
Ross, who lacks only the Personal Management merit badge, Scoutmaster conference
and Eagle board of review before he can earn the Eagle Scout award, read my blog
post about nontraditional Eagle projects around the time he was starting his project.
“It was very encouraging to all of us — to my son and his family and his troop,” Ross’
mom, Karen, wrote in an email to me.”
Ross said his favorite part of the project “was spending time with the greyhounds.
They are calm and sensitive dogs. At the adoption event, the foster parents
commented that the dogs were happy to be with the Scouts. This helped make the
event a success.”
The event didn’t just benefit the Greyhound Adoption League of Texas in the short
term; it also resulted in several adoptions, including a member of Troop 1000
adopting a greyhound into his family.

I’m impressed by Ross’ humility. When Ross heard I wanted to feature his project
on the blog, his mom told me he was worried it wasn’t “big” enough to warrant
coverage. (You might say he’s no publicity hound.)
This young man has great character and strong leadership skills. And he’s only 14.
Great job, Ross, and good luck as you finish the final steps toward earning Eagle!

April 2nd - Mesquite Rodeo Parade
Don’t forget that we are going as a district, again, this year.
Line up on Carver Street in Mesquite, starting at 8:00 a.m.
The parade procession will start at 10:00 a.m. Please wear
your field uniform (formerly, Class A) and comfortable
closed-toe shoes. Remember, Scouts cannot get in and out
of a vehicle; if they start in a vehicle, they must remain in
that vehicle for the duration of the parade.
PACKS: Scouts will pass out candy (supplied by the
district) and perforated recruitment cards.
TROOPS: The City of Mesquite has asked for the Boy
Scouts to help hold the city banners during the parade and
pick-up trash, after the parade. Let Jo Lena know, if you
are able to help.
April Roundtable (4/7, 7:00 p.m., LDS)
All units (Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts) are asked to bring
with them a skit, poem, song, Scout related story, or Dutch
oven recipe (Let me know if you can bring a Dutch oven
cobbler and Ophelia will buy the ice cream! Let me know
what you are planning to do and the time it will take, so
we can provide a great program!) Please bring as many
people with you as you can. All adults will get something
for attending! Whichever unit brings the most adults - the
Cub/Scoutmaster will get an extra prize!!!

2016 Venturing Rendezvous at Camp Wisdom on
4/8/2016
Venturing Rendezvous is a weekend of fun activities for
co-ed youth ages 14 to 21. Troops, bring your Scouts
graduating 8th grade or older for a new experience.

for the day on Saturday, April 9th or camp for the
weekend, April 8-10. Located at Circle Ten Council’s
Camp Wisdom. Event Cost: $25 per youth and adult
attending if registered and paid by 11:59p.m. Friday,

Philmont Opportunity
Venturing Crew 728, Richardson, TX, is looking for
3 youth participants (co-ed aged 14-20) to join us at

volunteer service supporting and improving our local

Commissioners Needed

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT)
National Youth Leadership Training is an intense, 5 ½
day, outdoor leadership training experience for youth
troop, team and crew leaders. The course goal is to

BALOO Training For Cub Scout Leaders Saturday
April 9, 2016
Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation training is
an introduction to the Cub Scout outdoor program.
BSA’s Cub Scout level camping policies will be taught
along with the necessary tools to help units carry out a
successful camping experience.
Oak Leaf Spring 2016, 5/21-5/22
Oak Leaf is a junior leader experience designed to
supplement troop level training and prepare Scouts
for NYLT (National Youth Leadership Training). It is
for Boy Scout youth, First Class Rank or above who
will be serving in a leadership capacity within their
Troop. Minimum age is 12 years old at time of course.

Intro to Outdoor Leader Skills, April 8-10
Everyone without exception who attends this
course really enjoys the experience. Learn by doing.
Participate in an actual Boy Scout weekend campout.
You will learn first-hand how a Boy Scout Troop
operates in the field. You will see scouting from the
perspective of a scout and really understand the
program. This course is taught in conjunction with the
2 classroom sessions offered a few weeks earlier. It’s is
strongly recommended that you participate in both.
Advance preparation and sign-up required.
Face-to-Face YPT Training
Council-sponsored Texas Camp Code Facilitated
Adult YPT is planned for each Wednesday in April in
preparation for the upcoming camping season. Each
session will run from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. Registration
is required via CampMaster All sessions will close to
BSA requires that at least one adult on a Pack
overnighter be BALOO trained. Webelos Den Leaders
camping as a den must be BALOO trained.

What a great Camporee! We had nearly 125 Scouts and
Webelos out at Trevor Rees-Jones shooting things, eating ice cream and learning Native American skills like
flint knapping, fire starting and spear throwing. Scouts

Whitzel for putting together the Camporee.

IRON HORSE DISTRICT

A special thanks to Matt Kreps for providing the
leadership to the Iron Horse District Pinewood Derby.
Matt had a lot of help and we want everyone involved
to know it was a great time and we had a lot of fun. If
you’re in the Stonebriar Center shopping, drop by the
office and tell the staff there “Thanks!” for allowing us
to hold the event there again this year.
The Camp O Ree is coming up on April 8th at
beautiful Camp James Ray. Back to the Basics is sure
to help you get your Scouts up to par on Scout skills
and is just going to be fun. There will be a midway
set up for camping, OA, and perhaps even some tribal
style dancing. Your Boy Scout, Varsity and Venturing
age youth will be missing out if they don’t come, so go
to CampMaster and get your troop registered.
April is a great month to work on TRAINING. There
are plenty of opportunities to get that training you
need. Look on CampMaster for opportunities for
facilitator led youth protection training. You can
take Scoutmaster Specific at the Camp O Ree at the
beautiful Camp James Ray on Saturday the 9th. We
also have two Facilitator Led YPT’s that day; one of
which is at the Camp O Ree. Hang in there, it is not
over yet! We are having IOLS, OWLS, and BALOO
on April 22nd - 24th. Lastly we are putting together
an opportunity to discuss Cub Scout recruiting. We
are holding a seminar/swap shop for best practices of
recruiting for year round success. It takes more than
fall for us to reach our goal with regard to reaching
more youth with the values and program of Scouting.

LONE STAR DISTRICT
Serving McKinney, Anna, Farmersville, Melissa, Princeton
Thanks to the Training Committee under the
direction of CiCi Hardin, Lanette Saetre, and Meg
Clark. BALOO and OWL training took place at the
Pavilion behind the LDS Church on Lake Forest. It
seems to have been the only winter day we had this
season but at least 18 people braved the cold to gather
their pearls of wisdom.
District Crossover was a tremendous success as well
and the advancement committee did a stellar job as
we had at least 50 Webelos make the journey into Boy
Scouts. Congrats to each troop for their new Scouts.
Teach them well.

Thursday the 7th will be the Council Recognition
Banquet and 3 “of our own” will receive the Silver
Beaver Award. Oh, in case you may not know, Lone
Star became a Gold District this past year so be sure to
give yourselves a high five in passing.
Let’s not forget the Lone Star District Camporee will
take place April 8-10 at the Princeton POW camp.
There will be a DEA officer with their K-9 partner,
a helicopter, and even Baden Powell will make an
appearance. Come check him out. It’s an event you
want to attend.
April is gonna be busy! April 1st and 2nd kick off the
month with the District’s Pinewood derby held at the
First Christian Church of McKinney on 1800 W Hunt
Street. Test and Tune is Friday and racing goes live on
Saturday.
IOLS and Oak Leaf will be held Myers Park.... Go
learn something!
Day Camp is not far off. Keep in mind Face-to-Face
YPT is necessary to participate as an adult. A Face-toFace session will be held at the Fairview office April 6,

of volunteers for putting on the Texoma Valley District
Pinewood Derby on March 5. Many race stories are
circulating within Texoma Valley at schools and Blue
and Gold Banquets. These Cub Scouts are already
talking about building faster cars for next year. Thank
you, Kim, for providing our Scouts with another fine
race day.
The Texoma Valley District Camporee will be held at
Camp James Ray on Friday, April 1 - Sunday, April 3,

the event. The theme of the camporee will be ‘Light vs
Dark,’ Star Wars. Detailed camporee information can

Scoutmaster & Assistant Scoutmaster Training,
sometimes known as SALT is for anyone joining the
Boy Scout Program! It will be held on Saturday April
9th at St Ann’s Catholic Parish. You will learn how the
Boy Scout program will be delivered to your boy in
order to maximize the fun, adventure, and character
development that he will get out of it. Even if you are
not sure if you will be an adult leader, get to know how
it works and meet some of the folks who are joining
the movement!
Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation, also known
as BALOO Training, will be held on April 23rd from
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the beautiful Camp Wisdom. This
training teaches the basics of a campout with Cub
Scouts and is required for at least one of the adults on
any Cub Scout Camping.

1, 2016
A brief schedule for the weekend is as follows:
Friday night
Troops arrive and check in
There will be a Scoutmaster/SPL meeting, time and
location to be determined
Saturday
Shake down inspections - 7:30 a.m. - 8:45 a.m.
After the patrol inspection, they can take their
equipment back to troop camp site to gather any
missing materials they may have forgotten.
Flag Ceremony - 9:00 a.m.
Announcements
Shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.
The trek should finish up between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00
p.m.
Dinner at troop sites

Each Patrol will be asked to perform a Scout themed
skit or song.

Worksite Based Career Education
This month, we want to recognize several of the
advisors from Dallas Police Dept, especially Sr.
Corporals Angie Hernandez and Larry Allen. They are
currently working very hard with a special group of
Dallas Police Explorers that will be taking a Philmont
trek this summer. The Dallas Police are doing
wonderful things to grow the teamwork and leadership
skills of their Explorers!
We also would like to thank advisors from the Plano
Fire Dept, Rowlett Fire and CERT, and Coppell Police
Dept, who have taken an active role in planning a
council-wide Emergency Preparedness event for this
Fall. This event will be even more unique because it
will be planned by Explorers from their posts, as well
as any other posts that will join in the coming months.
Last but not least, we would like to extend a
HUGE thank you to the post president of the UT
Southwestern Exploring Post, Irma, who recently
shared about her experience in the Exploring program
with a group of United Way representatives. Some high
schoolers would be nervous to do this, but not her! She
did a wonderful job! It is obvious she has learned some
great public speaking skills from her position as post
president.
Architecture Explorers visit Faulkner Design Group
In March, Explorers from our new Architecture
Exploring post had the opportunity to visit an interior
design firm, Faulkner Design Group (or FDG). They
got to speak with professional interior designers and
architects and learn what to do to pursue that career.
As well, they got to explore a design of a new building
through a set of virtual reality goggles! The favorite
hands-on experience was to make sample boards
in FDG’s resource library. The rooms are filled with
samples of everything you could possibly need to
create an indoor environment; tile, carpet, laminate,
wallpaper, and marble counter top samples. In groups,
the Explorers were tasked to use samples to create
a concept for a beach-themed room (without using
typical beach-theme prints or ideas). At the end of the
visit, one Explorer said that, before this visit, she wasn’t
sure she really wanted to be an interior designer, but
now she was really going to consider it!

“2016 CHARACTER CAMP”
Volunteers Needed
Character Camp is a FUN filled day of activities to provide
an outdoor experience for students participating in the
Learning for Life program. Each day a different group of
students will attend Camp from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Students
who attend camp are registered with Circle Ten Council in
the Learning for Life Program.
Volunteers are needed to help run program areas such as
Archery, field games, group activities, hay rides and nature
walks. Continental breakfast and lunch is provided for
all volunteers. Participation can be used for Wood Badge
tickets and Community Service hours are given.

Circle Ten Council, BSA is proud to be a Strategic Partner
for Lemonade Day Greater Dallas 2016 – an annual
community-wide event designed to teach youth how to
start, own and operate their very own business using…….a
lemonade stand! Lemonade Day brings together the
business and volunteer sectors of our community to focus
on preparing youth for entrepreneurship, leadership and
a responsible life! Boy Scouts learn how to set goals, find
investors, select their site, build a stand, purchase supplies,
make healthy products, advertise, serve their customers,
account for sales, open a bank account and give back to
their community. They will learn how to run their own
company and in the process, gain essential leadership skills
that are core Scouting values.
Lemonade Day™ is May 7, 2016! In 2014, Dallas held its
first Lemonade Day, and last year we had over 1,400 future
leaders set up lemonade stands, and get in on the fun that
will help prepare them for life.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the objective of Lemonade Day?
Lemonade Day teaches Greater Dallas’s youth how to start,
own and operate their very own business…..a lemonade
stand. Through the program, youth not only learn about
entrepreneurship, financial literacy and business skills, but
they also learn valuable life skills as well.
How much does it cost?
Lemonade Day participation is free for all kids, schools,
community organizations, and other caring adults who
participate.
Where does the money go?
The objective is to teach Scouts how to run their own
business, so they will keep what they earn after covering
their expenses and paying back their investors. Scouts will
also learn how to open a youth savings account so that their
profits can continue to grow.
Can anyone have a lemonade stand?
Yes! Any child can participate in Lemonade Day as long
as a responsible adult agrees to work with them. After
registering online at Dallas.LemonadeDay.org, Scouts
will gain access to Lemonopolis, the on-line interactive
Lemonade Day program. To register as a group or to
register for hardcopy workbooks, contact
[email protected].
Will there be instructions on how to run a lemonade
stand?
Absolutely! Lemonade Day is all about teaching Scouts
the value of entrepreneurship. As the Scouts work through
the program, they will make all the decisions necessary to
open their very own business. Use this Leader’s Guide with
additional group activities that help to teach Scouts the
steps to operating a successful business.
Where will the stands be located?
Scouts will select their own locations for the stands, which
means lemonade will be available across the Greater
Dallas area! NOTE: Scouts will be responsible for making
arrangements or obtaining permission for their stand
locations. On the Lemonade Day Dallas website – dallas.
lemonadeday.org - Scouts can find suggested stand
locations including city parks and local businesses that
invite stands to set up in front of their stores on Lemonade
Day. Be sure to use the contact information to get
permission!
What time is Lemonade Day?
Scouts and their responsible adult are encouraged to
operate their stand at any time on May 7, 2016.
Can Scout troops participate?
We encourage every troop to get involved. Lemonade Day
is a unique experiential learning opportunity combining
Scouting advancement and life skills to teach Scouts about
business. It is also a chance for leaders, families and Scouts

Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Scout troops.
Spring Creek Forest Preserve (www.springcreekforest.org) and
Twelve Hills Nature Center (www.twelvehills.org)
have a long history of working with Scout groups, and can schedule
activities for troops and individual Scouts year-round.
Both parks work closely with the North Texas Master Naturalist
program and offer trained volunteer support
to help coordinate and supervise Scout activities.
