REGULARS PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
DEAR MEMBERS
I would like to thank you for giving me and my new
team the opportunity to serve the Club by electing us
into the General Committee at the last Annual General
Meeting on 22 June 2014. My team and I look forward
to your support as well as suggestions and feedback
to improve your Club experience.
I would like to also take this opportunity to thank our
former President, Anthony Lim and his team for their
contribution, especially in terms of infrastructural
upgrades that were undertaken in the last 2 years. In
fact, a lot of the “hardware” has been put in place by
Anthony as well as the other former Presidents and
my mission now is to leverage on those infrastructures
and enhance the “software” part, in terms of better
programmes and activities for members.
I have been in the General Committee for the last 3
years holding various portfolios such as Assistant
Honorary Secretary/Honorary Secretary, Chairman
of the Service Excellence and advisor to the Senior
Members’ Social Sub-committee. I have a strong bond
with the Club and I am committed to see it succeed
further and live up to its vision to be the best family
club in Singapore.
There are 2 main projects that I want to embark on
during my term. The first project is the renovation of
the Atrium Café which will start around mid-August.
We are aiming at increasing the seating capacity and
at the same time, improving the ambience with better
lighting and décor to give the outlet a fresher and more
modern feel.
The second project is the upgrading of the Heliconia
Wing, in particular the lift leading to the Kensington
Ballroom. The existing lift has aged and its location
is not conveniently accessible to clients and guests
attending functions at the ballroom. With the new lift, I
hope we can attract more banquet clients as this is an
important source of revenue for the Club. This project
is currently in the feasibility study stage. I will update
you on the progress in the near future.
For the “software” part, I hope to add variety to
the Club’s already vibrant entertainment scene by
introducing more events and activities for members
of all age groups. New band performances and
different genres of music would be one of the ways
we can draw more members to the Club. Increase in
patronage will lead to higher revenue and ultimately,
this will strengthen our reserves.
The results from this year’s Member Satisfaction
Survey have been tabulated and our Member
Satisfaction Index (MSI) at 72.6 is similar to last year’s
72.7. This year, we also asked members to rate their
satisfaction level on Club activities, in which we faired
generally well. It’s heartening to know that the current
activities organised meet members’ expectation. Of
course, there will still be room for improvement and we
will certainly review all the feedback and suggestions
gathered from the survey and implement those that
2
are viable. For the full details on the survey results,
please refer to pages 14-17.
On the sports side, our players did well in the InterSocial Clubs Golf Tournament (ISCGT) 2014, currently
in 3rd position in Overall Team Standing, based on the
results of the first and second legs of the tournament.
We are also now in the lead for the Youth Inter-Club
Bowling Mixed League 2014 and 2nd in the Adult
Inter-Club Bowling Mixed League. In June 2014, we
hosted the SGCC-Prince Squash Open Tournament
with a total of 257 participants and we received
positive feedback for a well-organised event. We
continue to see active participation in social events
and activities organised by the Club such as the
Durian and Shopping trip to Johor Bahru and Junior
Gems Kids Party.
In the months ahead, we will be having an active
calendar of events. On 8 August 2014, we will
be counting down to the nation’s birthday at the
Kensington Ballroom with our Guest of Honour and
Club Patron Sylvia Lim. There will be a tour organized
on the evening of 18 August 2014 to Asia Pacific
Breweries for members to learn how our iconic Tiger
Beer is made. The SGCC Karaoke Challenge will
be held on 26 August 2014 at Club Twenty-Two. To
celebrate the mid-autumn festival, we will be having
a tea appreciation workshop, oriental stalls selling
accessories and home furnishings at the Main Lobby
and a lantern making workshop for the kids on 30
August 2014. In September, we will be screening the
F1 race as well.
With so much happening at the Club, I hope to see
you more often.
Yours Sincerely,
RANDY SNG
President

SPECIAL THE 57th ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
General Committee Members and General Manager
THE 57TH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The Club held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on
Sunday, 22 June 2014 at the Kensington Ballroom.
Lunch was provided for all attendees at 11.30am at
the adjacent Kensington Ballroom 3.
President Anthony Lim started the meeting at 1.05pm,
offering a warm welcome to members present. General
Manager (GM) Joseph Woon then invited Club Trustee,
Mr Hendrick Koh to present tokens of appreciation to
Committee Members who have completed their term
of office.
President’s Address
President Anthony Lim informed members of his
decision of not running for a second term due to his
work commitment. He then shared with members
highlights of the financial results. In summary, the Club
did better for FY 2013/2014 with net surplus before
depreciation and tax at $1.512m – an improvement
of 84% from the previous financial year. The cash
reserves also saw a steady increase at $5.418m as
compared to $4.728m 2 years ago; this was despite
the Club having undertaken several projects in the last
two years.
President then touched on one of his main thrusts
which was to enhance the Club’s status as “The
Best Family Club”. The first project was converting
the former Sports Bar to two separate spaces – The
Crossroads Lounge for the adults and The Hangout
for the youths. He then recalled his most satisfying
project which was the transformation of the Main
Lobby into an impressive hotel-style lobby and at the
same time tackling the heat problem by installing sun
shades and replacing the old air-conditioning system
to one that is more efficient. He also highlighted the
other projects carried out during his tenure such as
increasing the capacity of the Atrium Café and pool
deck area, creating a heritage wall to showcase the
Club’s history and renovating the Gardens Bowl.

He also took the opportunity to congratulate the
sportsmen and sportswomen who have done the
Club proud in various competitions.
To conclude, the President thanked his General
Committee (GC) members and SGCC members who
have supported him as well as the management and
staff for their dedication and hard work.
New General Committee
Four members from the existing GC stood for reelection for the office-bearer positions: Randy Sng for
the post of President, Kevin Kwek for Vice-President,
Bob Mong for Honorary Secretary and Peter Chia
for Assistant Honorary Treasurer. There were six new
faces - Koh Jin Kit for Honorary Treasurer, Edmond Tan
for Assistant Honorary Secretary and Foo Maw Shen,
Frederick Kang, Gilbert Low and Janet Yeong for the
positions of Committee Member. All nominations were
unopposed and the nominees were duly elected.
The newly elected GC members gave a short
introduction of themselves and their background.
President-elect, Randy Sng shared his aspirations
for the Club and highlighted the 2 key projects which
he will be spearheading during his term. One of them
is to renovate the Atrium Café to make it a more
conducive place for dining. The other is to upgrade
the lift at the Heliconia Wing which is currently old
and small, plus difficult to access due to its location.
However, he noted that this project is still at the
feasibility study stage. President-elect added that he
New members from the General Committee with Trustees and
former Presidents
hopes to leverage on the Club's existing infrastructure
and enhance the "software" part, in terms of better
programmes and activities for members. This will
hopefully increase patronage and make the Club a
better place for everyone.
The AGM proceeded with the confirmation of the
56th Annual General Meeting Minutes and adoption
of Annual Report and Accounts for the year ended
31 March 2014. The House also approved the
appointment of the Club’s existing auditor HLB Atrede
LLP for the ensuing financial year.
Any Other Business
Member Teng Leng Hock wrote in to enquire about
the Club’s master plan for upgrading of facilities and
also the cost of upgrading of the Crossroads Lounge
and the corresponding benefits and revenue that were
5
SPECIAL THE 57th ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
reaped from the project. GM replied that Presidentelect had earlier shared in his speech about his master
plan. He then explained that the cost of upgrading the
old Sports Bar has been factored into the cost of the
entire upgrading project - the renovation of the Main
Lobby and the creation of the new Crossroads Lounge
and The Hangout. He added that the creation of The
Hangout for the youths was an important milestone
for the Club as it further strengthens the Club’s
positioning as the best family club. In relation to the
revenue for the Crossroads Lounge, GM informed the
house that the average monthly revenue of the new
Crossroads Lounge, excluding the renovation period
of November and December 2012 has improved from
$47,385 to $49,157 after the renovation. He also
added that beverage sales from the darters which
were previously captured in the Sports Bar revenue
were no longer captured in Crossroads Lounge
revenue as the darts area has been relocated to the
second level of the New Wing, Club Twenty-Two.
Taking that into account, the new Crossroads Lounge
has in fact performed better than the previous Sports
Bar, especially in terms of revenue per square meter
of space as the new Crossroads Lounge occupies a
smaller space as compared to the previous Sports
Bar.
Dialogue Session with Members
As part of the usual tradition, an open dialogue session
was held. Member Sam Choo Chin Lye highlighted
that the Club needs to address the Main Lobby’s roof
as the heat situation is expected to worsen in future
due to global warming. Having air conditioners to cool
down the lobby would result in higher electricity bills
and hence, the Club needs to look for a long- term
sustainable solution. He also added that the Club
has to solve the roof leaking problem as well. Newlyelected Honorary Secretary Bob Mong and former
Chairman of Maintenance & Housekeeping said that
the Club will be looking into it.
Member Puah Neo Peng Chiew
6
General Manager Joseph Woon displaying the revenue figures of
the Crossroads Lounge
Member Puah Neo Peng Chiew acknowledged that
the management should have a long term plan in
place with regards to the upgrading of facilities. He
also suggested that the senior management team
should work on weekends and public holidays to
gather feedback from members instead of having
an annual survey. He also asked if the GC and
management considered installing an air-conditioner
system which utilizes heat generated from the system
to heat up water for the kitchen and shower areas. Mr
Mong mentioned that such a system requires a much
more complex set-up and bigger space hence it was
not feasible for the Main Lobby project. GM added
that such a system was indeed reviewed but, it was
too costly to be implemented; nevertheless this could
be re-looked at in future. Mr Puah Neo suggested that
SGCC be the first club to pioneer a totally smoke-free
club environment. President-elect Randy Sng said
that the Club has supported the National Environment
Agency’s (NEA) move to have smoking minimized in
the Club but that, the Club has to cater to the diverse
needs of its members.
After a fruitful dialogue session, President Anthony Lim
concluded the meeting. He then thanked members for
their attendance and invited them to the Crossroads
Lounge for drinks.

“I have been running a maid

and I am one of the pioneers
in this trade. I have been an
SGCC member since 1988
and this is my fifth year serving
the Club as a Committee

Membership Relations. I am
very passionate about dancing
and I am currently the advisor
to the Dance Interest Group,
advising on dance related
classes and activities.”
“I have been a member of the Club for
23 years and I am very familiar with
the Club’s operations. I am very active
in the darts scene and was the Darts
Convenor for the past three terms.
I was also previously a Committee
member (1994 – 2000) under the
leadership of former Presidents, Moses
Tan and Thomas Tan. As a retiree, I am
able to commit more time to the Club.”

“I am a banker by profession. I am
very active in school community work.
I serve as the Chairman and President

“I have been a member for 6
years and I enjoy the various
facilities and events in the Club.
I am married with three kids and
my children are very active in
the swimming scene. I recall a
few years ago the Club invited
me to submit a proposal to set
up a child care centre. Now as
a centre owner in the Club, my
work revolves around the Club
and I feel that I should be giving
some of my time back to serve
its members. I am currently the
F&B Chairman and this is my
second year in the Committee.”
“I joined the Club 11 years ago
when my family and I moved
into this vicinity. I play darts
and have represented the Club
for the past 7 to 8 years. I am
actively involved in sports,
namely Taekwondo, where I am
one of the resident instructors in
the Club. I am married with two
teenage children and they, too,
are very active in sports. Both of
them have represented the Club
in swimming and one of them is
currently a member of the swim
team. During my term, I hope to
inject fresh ideas in sports and
its related activities.”

REGULARS BEHIND THE SCENES / BOUQUETS
Behind the Scenes with Vicky,
Assistant Outlet Supervisor at Club Twenty-Two
“My role is to handle members’ and guests’ enquiries, control the flow of
guests coming into the outlet, promote beverages to members and guests,
supervise the service of the Guest Relations Officers, ensure the Karaoke
systems are in working condition, perform inventory checks and plan events
and manpower.
One of the challenges I face is when the Karaoke system breaks down. This
annoys the members and guests as it interrupts their enjoyment. I will try to
pacify the members and guests while troubleshooting the problem with the
help of the technicians.
It has been four years since I joined the Club. I enjoy organising and
emceeing for the themed night events as we get to put aside our uniforms
and dress according to the theme.”

SPECIAL PRESIDENT'S MEET-THE-STAFF-SESSION
President Randy Sng's address
The newly-elected President Randy Sng called for a
Meet-The-Staff Session on 30 June 2014. The session
kicked off with General Manager (GM) Joseph Woon
giving an overview of the management organizational
structure. President then gave a brief self-introduction
and then introduced his fellow General Committee
(GC) members who were present - Kevin Kwek, Bob
Mong, Peter Chia, Koh Jin Kit, Serena Goh, Foo Maw
Shen and Lee Say Yeow.
President shared with staff the projects that he would
like to carry out during his term as well as his aim to
make SGCC the best family club (refer to President’s
message on page 2). He then gave a summary of
the various portfolios which the GC members will be
holding and highlighted that the GC acts in an advisory
role to provide strategic direction for the Club while
the management team runs the projects. He also
reiterated the importance of good communication
among staff, management and GC. President also
touched on the Club’s vision and mission statement
in which he hoped that everyone can work towards
fulfilling it. He urged staff to continue providing
excellent service to members.
President
then
called
upon GM to share with
the staff the Club’s plans
to improve revenue. GM
sought the cooperation and
support from the staff to
carry out those plans. The
session ended with light
refreshments and a mingling

In The Spotlight
This column features some of the current issues and developments in the Club. We would like to take this
opportunity to share these with you. Have any feedback to relate to us? Email us at [email protected].
Atrium Café Renovation
Good news! The Atrium Café, one of our most
patronised outlets, will be undergoing a facelift.
Members can look forward to a brighter and more
modern looking outlet. Renovations will start around
mid-August till around mid-September 2014. Exact
dates will be announced on the website and on our
notice boards. During the renovation period, the
regular a la carte menu will not be available at the
café as well as the Coffee Deli, however we will have
hawker stalls at the Main Lobby offering simple local
dishes.
Vertical Garden
at Club Entrance
Have you seen this
special vertical garden?
We have beautified
our main entrance with
plants on both walls
leading into the Main
Clubhouse.
Supervision of Children
We would like to remind members that children under
12 years old should be accompanied by their parents
or authorised child minder while in the Club as stated
in Clause 4.3 of the Club’s Bye-Laws. Please ensure
your children are properly supervised while using the
Club’s facilities.
Penalties for Late and Non-return of
Games and Controllers at The Hangout
To ensure that all members have a chance to play the
X-box and PlayStation games, the play duration is
restricted to 1 hour. There is a timer
to help remind members to return
the games on time. Penalties will
be imposed for late or non-return
of the games and controllers.
No Barefoot and
Swimwear in Lobby
Please be reminded that
swimwear and being barefoot is
disallowed in the Main Lobby.
If you would like to make a
transaction at the Reception
counter for example, please put on
a t-shirt and shorts or a swimrobe
and footwear before proceeding to
the Lobby. This rule also applies
to kids.
Leaving Bags at Coffee
Deli Tables
We urge members to refrain from
leaving your bags on the tables at
Coffee Deli as such actions deprive
other members a place to dine.
Monkey Business
This section outlines some acts of mischief that have happened in the Club and was reported to us
by members.
•
All the showers in the Male Changing Room were turned on to the hottest temperature setting
and were left on, with all the cubicle doors closed.
•
Urinating in the steam bath and sauna causing the entire place to smell, resulting in a major
clean up.
We urge members to refrain from such behaviour and supervise their children while in the Club. We will consider taking
disciplinary action on any member or guest that misbehaves or breaks any Club rules.

from 4.86. The overall weighted average score for all
dimensions for 2014 is 5.08, and this translates to
an MSI of 72.6. (5.08 out of a maximum score of 7,
converted to an index of 100), as compared to MSI
of 72.7 (5.09 out of score of 7) last year. This is the
first time we had not registered an increase in MSI
since our survey began in 2011. We will work harder
towards improving the Club’s service level in the
coming year.
There has been an increase in the percentage of
respondents finding out about Club's events and

Prepare for the BIGGEST AND TOUGHEST CHALLENGE yet! Our
Spartan Challenge will push your limits and ignite the warrior in you.
Grab your friends and family and be taken back to 300BC in Ancient
Greece, where you will be thrust into a war that has been raging for
decades. A total of 4 teams comprising adults and children will be
formed to compete in various exciting challenges!
The story thus far …
During the Battle of Thermopylae, King Leonidas and his 300 Spartans
were defeated by the Persians at the Hot Gates while trying to allow the
rest of the Greek army to escape. A few remaining survivors including
King Leonidas have been captured by the Persians. To honour the fallen
Spartans and to seek a team of strong and brave warriors to rescue their
fellow men, a Spartan Challenge will be held. Contestants will be split
into teams to compete in the challenge. Your strength, endurance, agility,
intelligence and speed will be put to the test.
Think you are a Spartan? Sign up and prove it!

Enter the extravagant world of Moulin Rouge!
The House of Moulin Rouge (French for Red Mill), a cabaret in Paris was founded in 1889 and is best
known as the birthplace of the can-can dance, originally introduced by the courtesans who operated
from the house. Early shows were flamboyant, inspired by the circus and this influenced their musical
and dance entertainment. The can-can dance evolved into an art form of its own and led to the
introduction of cabarets across Europe. Experience the romance of Moulin Rouge first-hand,
at our Countdown party this year.
