Living Information
“Let’s take the city bus around the town!”
If you want to see a little more of Naka Ward or are wondering how to get to a certain place
in the ward, then the bus is probably the most convenient option for you. With all the hills
in the ward, riding the bus makes getting from A to B really easy. Why not try to make your
daily life and sightseeing even more convenient by getting to know about the bus services?
In Yokohama City there are city-run and privately-run buses. Here, we introduce the
services of the city-run buses.
◆How to ride the bus
Display of bus destination
The destination and route of the bus is clearly displayed on the front and rear of the bus
and on the side, just to the right of the entrance. Each bus also has a number. Although
the route displayed on the side doesn’t show all bus stops, it is easy just to ask the bus
driver if the bus is going to where you want to go (please try and do this in Japanese).
Also, once you are on the bus the name of the next stop appears at the front of the bus by
the driver’s seat, making it easier for you to know when to get off. Getting on the bus
City buses are used on a pre-payment basis, with passengers getting on at the front exit and
getting off at the center exit. Please line up at the bus stop. Many bus stops are served by
more than one bus line, so make sure you don’t mistakenly get on the wrong bus.
Fare
Flat fare, Adults: ¥210, Children: ¥110 (On certain lines the fare is calculated by distance)
Payment of fare
Place your fare in the fare box by the driver’s seat. Payment can be made in coins or with a

Grand Port Opening Exhibition
The Art of the Period of the Opening of
the Port of Yokohama From Tokugawa Era to Meiji
This fascinating exhibition reveals how art in Japan developed from the
end of the Edo period through to the beginning of the Meiji era in the
mid to late 19th century, a time when Japan was creating itself as a
modern nation state amidst a huge wave of political change following
the opening of the ports of Japan, including Yokohama. The
significance and roles of patrons of arts and culture, the creation and
expansion of new forms of artistic expression, the development of
cultural policies and artistic transformation, and further, the
characteristics of arts and culture at the time of the emergence of
modern Japan will be highlighted clearly.
Date and Time: Sep. 19 (Sat.) to Nov. 23 (Mon.),
10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., Fridays until 8:00 p.m.
(admission until 30 min. before closing)

¥1,000 yen note. ¥5,000 and ¥10,000 notes are not acceptable. You can also use a prepaid bus
card, or the PASMO and Suica cards that are also used for the trains. Using a card makes it
more convenient and you do not need to count out your fare in coins. Please tell the driver if
you require a child fare or if you are paying for two or more people at once.
Getting off the bus
When the name of the bus stop you want to get off at is announced, press one of the buttons
closest to your seat. Get up from your seat once the bus has come to a complete stop.
Other points
To ensure your safety, please do not walk around the bus while it is in motion. If there are
no seats available, please hold onto the hand rail or straps provided. There are priority
seats located at the front of the bus. Please give these seats to elderly persons or persons
with limited mobility.
◆Bus stops
There are probably some people who want to know where the
bus stops are located, but are unable to read the Japanese
signs. In this case, you will find the “Naka-ku Ward Map”
published by the ward a useful reference guide as it lists all the
place names and bus stops in the ward in English. The map
was published at the end of January 2007 and there may be
some areas that have changed since then, but it is still a
valuable source of reference.

Enjoy walking your dog by keeping a close eye on him always!
Don’t forget the rules of etiquette and safety for dogs!
Increasing reports of unleashed dogs in parks!
Your dog might be your best friend and you might think it is safe to walk him off the leash.
However, once a dog is off the leash it is virtually impossible to control. Unleashed dogs can
cause serious accidents by biting unsuspecting people. It is also possible that large dogs may be
able to push over small children and elderly persons, causing them to fall. In a big city, a dog can
sometimes be frightened by a big noise and suddenly rush out, which may lead to an accident.
A leash is a safety tether linking owner and dog. Never keep your dog unleashed!
Please remember that parks are not toilets for dogs!
Owners need to be diligent about cleaning up after their dogs and taking it back home for
disposal. Please do not bury your dog’s mess outside as it may create odors and also cause plants
to die. It is also important to be responsible for your dog’s urine. It is a good idea to always take
a water bottle to rinse off the area where your dog has urinated. Why not start training your dog to go to the toilet at home before going out?
A park is a place of relaxation for everybody.
Allowing dogs to be unleashed in public places is prohibited under “Yokohama City Animal
Protection and Management Regulations.” In addition, the “Yokohama City Parks Regulations”
stipulate the prohibition of acts which are considered likely to cause danger and acts that cause

public nuisance. In other cities, some parks have been made
off-limits to dogs due to recurring problems.
Are you holding the leash properly?
Do you let your dog run on ahead and decide where to go? It should
be the owner who is the leader, who decides where to go and sets the
pace; and dogs should follow their owner’s lead. Leash length is also
important. Be careful not to extend the leash too far, maintaining an
appropriate length to keep the dog safe and secure. Never let a dog
off its leash in a public place. Owners should closely supervise their
dog when it needs to exercise. * If you keep a dog, you need to register it!
Dog owners are legally obligated to register their pets and ensure that a
rabies vaccination is administered. Registration only needs to be
completed once and a rabies vaccination should be obtained annually.
If you move house or your dog dies, you should report the details.

Naka Ward Town News October 1, 2009 3
For the future of a “Green Town Yokohama”
-- Levy of “Yokohama Green Tax” launched from FY2009 -The total amount of greenery cover has been on a continuously decreasing trend, with
approximately 100 hectares of forests lost every year. Once this greenery is lost, recovery is
difficult to achieve. Preservation of greenery is therefore an urgent and pressing issue.
The City of Yokohama has set up the Yokohama “Increase the Green” Plan, aiming to put a
stop to the loss of greenery in the city and preserve green spaces for the next generation. The
levy of a Yokohama Green Tax has been launched from this fiscal year to secure a solid
financial foundation for the promotion of various measures. We hope that every citizen will
understand the aims of these efforts and give their cooperation.
- Tax system, tax rate and implementation period
Individuals: ¥900 per year is added to the per capita levy for residential tax (for the period
from FY2009 to FY2013). Some exemptions may be provided for this per capita levy in the
case that income falls below a determined threshold.
Companies: An amount equivalent to 9% of the average per capita residential tax is added.
(for the period from the business year starting from April 1, 2009 to March 31, 2014)
For the first two years of the period, companies that are not liable for corporate inhabitant
tax are exempted.
- The Yokohama Green Tax will be used for:
・ Preservation of farmland and forests by acquisition
・ Promotion of greening plans
・ Upgrading the quality of green spaces through improved maintenance plans
・ Promotion of citizens’ participation

The First Indian International School in Yokohama has opened!
The India International School in Japan (IISJ), Yokohama campus is located on
the third floor of a building that once housed the now closed Kirigaoka-dai-san
Elementary School in Midori-ku.
IISJ is a nonprofit organization that works to offer education to children of Indian
residents from kindergarten to senior high school level. Through its curriculum
based on the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) of New Delhi, India,
children can receive an appropriate education that will enable them to adapt
themselves to life in India when they are relocated to their home country. IISJ
opened the Yokohama campus in April, 2009, starting out with 14 kindergarteners
and four elementary school students. IISJ expects to double or even triple the
number of students at Yokohama next year.
The school is located in a quiet residential area surrounded by greenery, and
according to Mrs. Jain, the school director, it provides an ideal location for
children’s education. Children come from various parts of Yokohama and other
neighboring cities, including Hachioji. IISJ operates a school bus that picks up
children at points close to their homes if they live within the catchment area for the
bus service, and also picks up and drops off at Nakayama and other stations.
Classes for kindergarten start at 9:00 a.m. and end at 2:00 p.m. Snack time is at
10:30 a.m. with children bringing their own snacks from home. Following snack
time, the music class begins. Kindergarten and elementary pupils move to another
classroom together and have a really good time all singing together. It is
impressive to see the thoughtfully developed educational curriculum in operation
as it gives children the opportunity to learn about social manners, behavior and
consideration to others through play.
It is also amazing to hear 3-year-old Japanese children chattering in perfectly
pronounced English. It is easy to imagine these little children growing up to be
truly international and sophisticated citizens.

Naka Ward Town News October 1, 2009

23 (Mon.),

card, or the PASMO and Suica cards that are also used for the trains.
