DOORDARSHAN ARCHIVES
Doordarshan is India's Public Service Broadcaster dedicated to the Conservation
and Propagation of Indian cultural heritage apart from empowering the citizens by
way of providing them information on a variety of subjects.
Started on 15th September, 1959 at Delhi, it now has 67 Studio Centre 11 Regional
Language Channels (Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi,
Kashir, Oriya, Bangla and DD-North East) two Terrestrial Net works (DD-National &
DD-News) apart from four National Channels (DD-India, DD-Bharati, DD-Sports and
DD-Urdu). It caters to more than 90% of the Indian Population through 1400
transmitters. DD is also available on Face Book, You Tube and Twitter.
Doordarshan Archives was started in 2003 with a new approach to meet the
challenges of Audio Visual Digital World by creating a very high quality database of
the video assets .
DD-Archives is involved in cleaning of tapes, dubbing, digital restoration,
preservation, digitisation of the content, creation of Meta-data for easy access of
archived programmes, cleaning of tapes and finally preserving the digitised content
in file format through the MAM. The files are saved in LTO-4. The Domain and
Language Experts create the meta-tags for easy accessibility of the archived
programmes.
Digitization is done @50 Mbps and save it into media storage, which is the LTO4
cartridge. Each Digital Linear Tape can store 800 GB of native data. The archiving
system at DD is a fully scalable system that can store up to 200 thousands hours. The

system manages all the cartridges on bar coding.
The digitised programmes available with Doordarshan are categorised into 38
subjects, which are :-Animation & Puppetry, Ballet, Children, Craft, Dance Drama,
Dance Series, Documentary Series, Environment & Ecology ,Events, Fair & Festival,
Fine Arts, Folk Dance & Music, Game Show, Health, Historical Place, Indian Classical
Dance, Interview & Conversation, Jugalbandi Light Music, Literature & Poetry
Reading, Music Series, North Indian Instrumental, North Indian Vocal, OB, Orchestra,
Personality, Science & Technology, Serial, South Indian Instrumental, South Indian
Vocal, Sports, Telefilm, Theatre, Drama & Play, Travel, Unclassified, Variety
Entertainment, Visit, Western Music & Dance. As of now DD-Archives has 20,000 hrs
of digitised content out of which 2300 hrs are in file format.We also have 3211 Black &
White and 2533 Colour photographs that have been digitised.
DD-Archives is also involved in bringing out DVD's / CD's & A-CD's on varied
subjects available with it. It has been instrumental in releasing 79 DVD's, 39 VCD's
and 39 A-CD's.
Doordrashan plans to set-up state of the art Archives in four regional centres apart
from the Central archives at Delhi. The four Zonal archives are being set up in
Chennai (South Zone), Kolkata (Eastern Zone), Mumbai (Western Zone ) and
Guwahati (North-Eastern Zone).
