The BBBS Quarterly VOLUME 4, ISSUE 4 OCT — DEC, 2015 OCTOBER Armada Hockey Games The Beaconsfield Oldtimers’ Hockey Association (BOHA) have been able to donate 4 tickets to each game on October 2nd and 3rd. BOHA has also provided us tickets for our November activity - Thank you so much BOHA!! Meet &Greet Our next get-together for all approved volunteers AND alumni members will be on Tuesday, October 6th from 6:30pm until 8:30pm. We will meet at Le Manoir in Pointe-Claire. Bring a friend or two! Come join us for some appetizers and a pint and stay connected. Please confirm with Cathy at 514-538-6100 ext.33 or at [email protected] Apple Store Workshop The Apple store in Fairview is hosting a fabulous “Make a movie” workshop!! The actual workshop is on Sunday, October 18th from 9am until noon and the following Sunday, October 25th, is the Movie Festival, from 9am until 11am, where we show the movies we made to parents and peers. Please confirm with Cathy at 514-538-6100 ext.33 [email protected] October Activity - Halloween Party!! Come party with us on Friday, October 30th, from 6:00pm until 9:00pm! This year’s theme is a mystery night is “Who stole the Halloween candy?” Come in a costume and you have a chance to win a tablet!! Best of luck and warmest wishes to Caitlin Cuggy, who has left to pursue new challenges. Felicia is a great addition to our team with her sunny smile and her endless cheerfulness and energy and we are lucky to have her. West Island Communty Shares Walk The annual WICS walk takes place October 8th from 11:30am until 1:00pm. BBBS staff always attends to show our support for this amazing organization, who is also one of our biggest sponsors! Bowling Cards are in! Every year, our National Office sends us Big and Little bowling passes! They can be redeemed each month and offer a free game of bowling. Please contact either your caseworker or Cathy if you have not received you pass. Along with the pass, you will receive a list of the locations that presently accept these cards. Dreams Take Flight Dreams Take Fight is a non-profit organization made up of volunteers from Air Canada. Each year, they organize the trip of a lifetime to Disney. We have once again been lucky enough to send 5 children to Disney World for the day on November 4th!! Christmas Baskets Work for Christmas Baskets will begin this month. Every year, BBBS depends on many companies whose employees go above and beyond, providing us with gifts and food. If you are in need of a Christmas basket, please feel free to contact Cathy. Black Jackets for sale BBBS is by selling some really useful 3-season jackets donated by the Beaconsfield Mens’ Hockey Association (BOHA). It’s a great deal! They are unisex , 3-season windbreaker jackets selling for $10 each. Different sizes available (adult sizes only). Contact Cathy if you are interested in purchasing some! CIBC Scholarship—prep reminder: Every February, grade 10 students (matched kids only) are eligible to apply for a CIBC scholarship. The appilcations should be available sometime in November and would be due around the end of January. The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage grade 10 students involved in a mentoring program to pursue postsecondary education. This scholarship is valued up to $38,000.00. Applicants are selected based on: community involvement and extra-curricular activities (part-time jobs, volunteer activities, involvement in sports, clubs, family responsibilities), academic potential and individual needs and aspirations. Even if you are not in grade 10 yet, you can still participate in as many activities as you can so that you can one day be eligible. “Win a Tablet” Contest We are holding a contest for kids to win one of two tablets. You need to write an essay of 250 words about what you like about having a Big Brother/Sister or why you would like to have one. The deadline to hand in the essay is Friday, November 27th. You may either e-mail it or send it by mail. All contact info is on the last page of this newsletter. Please put it to the attention of Cathy Kudzman. The winners will be randomly picked at our annual Christmas party on December 5th. If you have an questions, please contact Cathy. We want to hear from the families and volunteers of the BBBSWI community. :) Volume 4, Issue 4 Page 3 RE-CAP (JULY, AUGUST SEPTEMBER 2015) JULY Canada Day Parade in Pierrefonds BBBS took part in the city of Pierrefonds Canada Day parade. Despite the rain, we had an awesome time. A couple of our Littles showed up, along with mom and a Big Brother, to walk with us—thank you for coming out! Meet &Greet The July Meet & Greet was held at the Black Lion Pub in Beaconsfield. Thank you to those who joined us. July Activity - Alouettes Football Game BBBS cheered on the Alouettes football team Friday, July 3rd at the Molson Percival Stadium. The game was great and we are very thankful to the Alouettes for donating these tickets to us! Bike Donations The employees at Covidien and Medtronic left us speechless after not only donating so many beautiful, brand new bikes for our kids but also taking the time to actually assemble the bikes themselves and add a personal note to each child, signed by the “builders” of the bike! These events took place on June 11th and 12th. The children were so happy! Old Navy On July 31st, Old Navy once again invited a few teens for a job shadowing day at their store. The teens were taught how to dress up the manniquins, fold clothes, operate the cash, among other things! We would like to say a big THANK YOU to Old Navy for this opportunity! AUGUST Baie D’Urfé Vintage Vehicle Expo 2015 - On August 2nd, BBBS participated in this exceptional event. We gratefully accepted a generous donation of $750 from the Sauvetage Baie D’Urfé. August Activity—We had suggested that matches/kids in waiting attend our big Ribfest fundraiser. Many of you showed up over the course of the weekend, it was great to see you!! Ribfest 2015 What a huge success! Thanks to all who came out to have some amazing ribs and support us. We raised $30,000 to continue our programs!! We are already planning for Ribfest 2016. Hope to see you next year! SEPTEMBER September 3rd: Alouettes game The folks from the Alouettes are always thinking of us! They have been outstanding lately and have been donating tickets for so many games! Alouettes—Sept. 20th Yet another great football game at the Molson Stadium! Sept. activity: VRRA (Vintage Road Race Association) BBBS spent an afternoon watching bike races and touring the pit. We had a really nice tour of the motorcycle pit by racer and organizer Dominic. He was extremely knowledgeable and kindly introduced us to some drivers and let the kids sit on some bikes! Fran on Montreal Billboard on MAtv for an interview Our director Francesca recently did an interview on MAtv! It aired on September 22nd. Some of our staff walked in this enormous parade downtown to support Centraide, who each year, supports BBBSWI. Without Centraide, we could not exist!
