BNSU Raises Alarm On Discrepancy
In Seamen's Provident Fund Interest Rate
The Bhartiya Navik Sena Union
(BNSU) has brought to light an
alarming discrepancy in the interest
rates paid under the Seamen's
Provident Fund scheme.
Interestingly pointed out in a BNSU
letter to the P.F. Commissioner,
Mumbai, is that the current interest
rate of 7.5% paid by the Seamen's
Provident Fund office is
disturbingly less by a whole 1%
than the 8.5% being paid by the
Employment Provident Fund
scheme.The question that BNSU
General Secretary Mr. Suresh
Salaskar has raised is “Why hold

“Discriminatory towards Indian

requested the P.F. Commissioner to
take up this matter urgently and

Sub: - Rate of interest on Provident Fund for the Indian seafarers.
Dear Sir,
It has been learnt that the rate of interest on the Provident Fund paid by Seamen's
Provident Fund office is less than Employment Provident Fund office. It has been
notice that the rate of interest is being paid under the Seamen's Provident Fund is as
projected below That means it is still less than the Employment Provident Fund which
is @ 8.5%.
As you are aware that the Indian seafarers play important role for getting maximum
foreign exchange to our country, as well they are also ambassador when they are
sailing on board different ships and visiting different countries we would like to know that
why such a discrimination is being made.
On behalf of all Indian seafarers “Bhartiya Navik Sena Union” request you to take
up this matter with your higher authorities and increase rate of interest on Seamen's
Provident Fund.
At BNSU we prove ……
“ Our Actions Speak Louder Than Words “
Hope you will take up the matter on urgent basis and do your best for the increase in
the rate of interest for the seamen.
Awaiting for your earliest reply.

Our union is in this field since last 7 years. More than 10,000 seafarers are
our members. As such we know the educational, practical experience and
capacity of the seamen. If we had been called before any circular is brought
out, we could have contributed our suggestion to be incorporated in such
circular.
With specific reference to subject circular, we say that there are persons
who have been issued purser CDC & got experience on board sailing more
than 18 months and have acquired practical experience. Such personnel
should be automatically issued deck / engine watch keeping certificate as for
such person no more training is necessary.
We therefore request you to amend and modify the subject circular taking
into consideration our aforesaid suggestion.

In the past 10 years, Indian Shipping industry has rapidly established goodwill in
international shipping industry. But the stoppage of issuing Indian CDC to ITI Fitters,
Electricians and Welders has put a break on the progress of Indian shipping industry
which has created unemployment and wasting of talent of the skilled personnel.
We therefore request you to restart issue of Indian CDC to ITI Fitters, Electricians

We are sure you would recognise the importance of shipping industry and shall take
action to put Indian shipping industry once again on international market.

Sub: - Delay in renewal of passport of Indian Seafarers.
Sir,
As you are aware that Passport is mandatory document for the seafarers sailing
onboard any Merchant Navy Ships. It is been brought to our notice by our reliable
members that the present system for renewal of passport by passport office takes
minimum 1 months time, which is very inconvenient to the seafarers join immediately
and do not get sufficient time for renewal as they have to visit the passport office several
times for checking the status
We state that fast renewal system which takes less than 15 days for renewal of the
Passport should be adopted for the Indian Seafarers. Seafarers are the persons who
bring maximum foreign exchange for our country and enrich our economy and therefore
it is necessary in national interest to give them the best support needed.
We Bhartiya Navik Sena Union, the Trade Union serving for the betterment of the
seafarers request you to take our views into consideration and arrange to adopt new
system of renewal Indian seafarers to renew their passport in less than 15 days period.
Thanking you,
Yours faithfully,
