The discovery forum is a condensed version of SASBO Leadership Summit. Track One “How to Earn Straight C’s on Your Report Card.” Now that everything is digital, mobile, and social, it is essential that you think outside the box, outside the book, and outside the classroom, when it comes to teaching and learning. Starting with ourselves as learners as well as leaders, you can model the rich, community-driven experiences that you want for your students. Then you can see that being a “C” student is not such a bad thing in the context of inspiring students to create, communicate, collaborate and think critically. Then you will go “Back to the Future” and work in collaborative teams. You will put your creativity and teamwork skills to the test as you build life-size hovercrafts that you will race at the end of the session. No tools required. Having fun is mandatory. Next it is “Storytelling for the YouTube Generation.” Everyone has a camera in their pocket and easy access to video tools that rival professional movie studios. How do you use these powerful technologies in the classroom and in your work? In this session, you will explore a series of several different YouTube videos and genres. You will analyze the original video and break down what exactly is so appealing about it and how you can use simple technologies to replicate those ideas. Then you will take your hovercraft experience viral as you work together to create digital stories for the world to see. Click here for speakers bios. 6 SASBO Discovery Forum Thursday, April 16, 2015 8:45 am – 4:00 pm Track Three “Lean Six Sigma for Schools: Play and Learn Discovery Forum.” Play and discover how using Lean Six Sigma Process Improvements can drive efficiency in a school system’s administrative department. By the end of this fun filled track you will have a detailed understanding of: 1) What is Lean Six Sigma; 2) Variation and Operational/Organizational Wastes and how these negatively impact process performance; 3) Basic Lean Six Sigma approaches and tools to eliminate and reduce Variation and Operational/Organizational Wastes in order to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of administrative processes. Actual case studies from school districts will be used and how the districts overcame the challenges the districts faced. You will experience a variety of hands on activities which demonstrate the lean process. Leave the track with skills to transform your office as well as your school district. Track Four – Note Track is Full Please select another track. “Excel and Word Survival Skills.” Spend the day boning up on your excel and word skills. This is not your typical computer class. You will walk away with skills to make your job easier. The track will start with “Excel 2013 Data Manipulation.” Bring your laptop with Microsoft Excel installed and for a quick review of basic Excel skills. Then you jump into the magic of advanced data features built into Excel. The session will include a review of the new features in the Excel interface introduced with Office 2013 then move on to a review of basic Excel icons and creating worksheets with good database design. Topics will include: working with data in Excel (Database features), sorting and filtering, building subtotals, and creating PivotTables and Pivot Charts. All features included in the track are available in Excel 2007, Excel 2010 and Excel 2013. Microsoft Excel courseware is included with this track. After mastering Excel you will move on to “Word 2013 Survival Skills.” You will explore the formatting features (and pitfalls) available in Microsoft Word. With each release, Microsoft Word becomes more sophisticated, making it more difficult to sit down and type a simple letter, create an envelope, save and print. This track will teach you to simplify the complexities of Microsoft Word, enabling you to be more productive with word processing. This session will begin with a review of the new features in the Word 2013 interface. Then you will learn how to navigate the many built-in features of Word that make word processing a challenge; heading styles, Normal template, default fonts and styles, automatic bullets and numbering, indents, page setup options and tables. Bring your laptop with Microsoft Word installed and pick up some great tricks and tips. All features included in the track are available in Word 2007, Word 2010 and Word 2013. Microsoft Word courseware is included with this workshop. When registering note the version of Excel and Word that will be installed on your laptop. You will receive training manuals to take with you based on the version you use. Note this track is limited to 25 participants in order to provide time for skill building exercises and Q & A. Start your morning off with “Toxic Waste in the Workplace.” Often the workplace can be the most unpleasant and often toxic environment. Each person’s arrival brings with it the history of that person, the beliefs and behaviors of the individual and the events that may have occurred in that person’s life the night before. Many employees feel the need to have power over others, not be pleasant to work with, and have the desire to make life difficult for fellow co-workers. Certain days have more toxins than others. This session will examine: Defining toxins. Examining personal toxins. Understanding toxic environments. Discovering the toxic wasters. Learning to work toxic co-workers such as: Backstabber, Gossip, Self-Righteous and Perfect One. Understanding why bad behavior is prohibited. Developing a game plan to make everyone vital to the team. Then you will journey back into the 70’s to solve a case of a crime hit by the mob and “Solve a Cold Case Murder Team Building Communication Project.” You will through small group interaction, work together as an Investigative Team with the most recently coordinated evidence to assist you in solving the case.
