Gas springs 136 L G B Gas springs Technical information Field of application New possibilities Compared to most other spring design characteristics, the gas spring principle is based on that of a flat spring characteristic, with a low force increase. The stroke velocity is slow and optional, with the ability to lock the piston rod in the required position. The gas spring gives the designer the choice of several solutions in many areas. The main characteristic of the gas spring is its flat spring principle, slow extension velocity and low weight in relation to the force applied. Force SUSPA gas springs can be used for balancing, unloading or as a safety trigger in many designs. The gas spring is easy to apply and it takes a minimum amount of effort to mount it. Some typical applications are: covers, doors or hoods for vehicles such as cars and agricultural and foresty machines, ventilating apertures, drawing tables, chairs, beds, windows, tools etc. Heavy items can with the help of a gas spring be lifted or lowered by hand easily. If there is a need for forces to be applied outside the standard range, there is a way of supplying this requirement. For a good installation, where the spring is working under good conditions, considerable more load oscillations can be achieved without any marked force reduction. t /sec) 5 F2 F1 stroke FR F3 s (mm) F4 quick The gas spring gives a counter force in the same direction as a compression spring and consists of a tube, filled with nitrogen gas. The work is accomplished by a sectional piston, connecting both sides with each other, and a piston rod which is compressed into the tube. During the stroke, the gas is compressed and hereby an increased counter force results. By filling the tube to the required pressure, a pre-load (Fo) is obtained, without any particular pre-loading device. The gas spring contains a certain amount of oil for the lubrication of the seal, guide and piston rod. The oil also dampens and reduces the velocity prior to full extension / compression, creating a smooth, controlled motion. By varying the oil quantity, the rate of extension can be modified. The extension velocity is controlled by the valve system of the gas spring. The gas springs in our stock catalogue have normal extension- and compression velocity and dampening. By request, gas springs with other velocities and dampening can be delivered. The tube body is manufactured from steel and painted black in colour RAL9005. Information about the spring force and a warning text, not to open the spring, are printed on each spring. The piston rod is hard chrome plated steel. Maximum allowed working temperature is +80°C (110°C during max. 1 hour without movement). Minimum temperature is -25°C. The initial temperature for the spring force is 20°C. With each change of ± 1°C, the force changes accordingly by 0,34%. A spring which works in -25°C, gives a force that is 15,3% lower than its nominal force. F1 Dampening At vertical installation with a maximal rotation angle of 60° and the piston rod pointing down, the best dampening for the longest life is obtained. If the spring works with a very large rotation angle (as in a trunk hood), it is recommended to install the spring with the piston rod pointing up.
