KASKASKIA VALLEY A.B.A.T.E. OF ILLINOIS, INC. MARCH 2010 VOLUME 3 ISSUE 11 THE VALLEY NEWS LUCK OF THE IRISH TO YA FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK Greetings, It is with regret that I write you this month. When asked to take the nomination for President I was honored and I had the time to dedicate to the position. Soon after, personal changes in my life have taken my time and I will soon be relocating to TN. (A beautiful state, but a helmet state) KASKASKIA VALLEY A.B.A.T.E. OF ILLINOIS, INC. OFFICER INFORMATION PRESIDENT - DAVE ZAPP [email protected] 618-599-6434 VICE-PRESIDENT - TROY DAUGHERTY [email protected] 618-292-3005 These changes leave me no choice but to turn over the helm of President to Troy; who, along with the rest of the board, has been doing the work anyway. Keep fighting for your motorcycle rights and I hope to see you on the road. If you’re ever in TN, give me a call. 205 Ridgeview Reserve Dr Mt Juliet, TN 37122 618-599-6434 Stay Safe Out There, Dave TREASURER & MEMBERSHIP JULIE RENTH [email protected] 618-322-0254 2010 MARBLESTOPS SECRETARY & PUBLIC RELATIONS NEWSLETTER RENAE BAUER [email protected] 618-780-2381 RUSH IN 2 JOLLY’S KRETZER’S GRILL & BAR BAREFOOTIN SALOON MAINSTREET MILLSIDE POPLAR PLACE DALE’S HARLEY DAVIDSON JERRY’S POLE BARN TJ’S IN OKAWVILLE ACTIVITIES TROY DAUGHERTY [email protected] 618-292-3005 LEGISLATIVE EDDIE (BUD) BRYAN [email protected] 618-780-4499 SAFETY & EDUCATION MARY SCHULTZ [email protected] 618-335-1068 STATE BOARD OF DIRECTORS SW REGIONS REPRESENTATIVE ROBERT DODSON [email protected] 618-972-3698 SEARGENT AT ARMS GARRY SCHULTZ [email protected] 618-322-9929 TICKET MASTER & PRODUCTS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED ATTENTION ADVERTISERS NEW THIS YEAR ADVERTISERS MONTHLY SPOTLIGHT ONE FULL PAGE AD………. NOW We have seen a couple good days to ride and for everyone who rode pass the Pawn Shop on their bikes you was number one each and every time you rode by. March 20th is our Trivia Night at the Moose in Nashville. I have fliers at the Pawn Shop to help spread the word. May 1st is our Spring Ride sponsored by Holzhauer’s Pro Motor Sports in Nashville. They are giving a $1,000 Gift Certificate to the winner. The gift certificate can be redeemed at either Holzhauer’s Pro Motor Sports in Nashville or at St. Charles Harley Davidson Store in St. Charles, MO. The ride will end at Holzhauer’s Pro Motor Sports where they are providing a band for us. We will need lots of member volunteers at each of these events to help. I’m hoping for 100+ bikes at Spring Ride so a lot of help will be needed. Also, we need more help with advertisers so we have more stops on our rides this year. $50 gives them a business card ad in the newsletter for a whole year. Stops can be anywhere, not just bars. Any questions or suggestions are appreciated. Troy Cell 618-292-3005 EMAIL : [email protected] STATE CALENDAR OF EVENTS 2010 RIDE ITINERARY MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THESE UPCOMING EVENTS. On February 10, 2010, both of Senator Donne Trotter’s Mandatory Helmet Bills (SB2535 & SB2536) were assigned to Senate Public Health Committee. That was the same committee that passed Senator Trotter’s Mandatory Helmet Bill last year. SB2535 would require all riders under 18 years of age to wear a federally approved helmet when operating or being a passenger on a motorcycle. SB2536 would require all riders, regardless of age, to wear a federally approved helmet. You can call them at their district offices listed above or by any other effective means. You may even want to send colored post cards (I recommend orange.) to them. Another helmet bill: On February 10, 2010, Senator Ira Silvertein’s SB2627 was also assigned to the Senate Public Health Committee. This bill applies to bicycle riders and passengers. SB2627 would require small passengers to be fastened into their seats and to wear helmets. A.B.A.T.E. opposes bicycle helmet bills because they interfere with parental care of children and because such legislation is a step toward requiring helmets on motorized bicycles (i.e., motorcycles). Again, please contact the Senate Public Health Committee members listed above and urge them not to pass SB2627. Legislative Agenda: On February 27th, A.B.A.T.E. Board of Directors will be asked to approve the tentative Legislative Agenda that has been mailed twice to all chapters. I urge all Board Reps to be ready to vote on the agenda on the 27 th. If you need another copy, please let me know and I will e-mail it to you. Legislative Day: 11 March 2010 in Springfield, IL – please be there if you can. Thank you to the members that help me keep abreast of new bills and actions on bills. The General Assembly website has a tool that is supposed to monitor bills or areas of law; however, I just cannot get it to work. Until I do, I rely heavily on personally reviewing all the bills on our watch list but I especially count on members who advise me of things that are happening at the Federal and State levels. Now, if only someone would show me how to work that @#%$! Website… George Tinkham A.B.A.T.E. I’m dreaming of a White Valentines Day…WOW this weather is awesome. Soon, very soon, we’ll be riding and all will be right with the world. We had a nice turn out at our last meeting. We welcomed a new member, Mr. Chuck Lane SR. We also were honored to have Mr. Bob Myers in attendance. Tickets are still available for the Cultural Society’s 2009 Harley Davidson Crossbones giveaway. For tickets please call me at 618-780-2381. Congratulations to Mr. Bob Dodson for receiving a Perfect Attendance Award at the B.O.D Meetings for 2009. We are so proud of him. We also received a Certificate of Appreciation for a $160 donation we made to the State. MAIN STREET SALOON 310 LOUIS STREET * BECKEMEYER, IL 62215 618-227-8607 OPEN 11 AM – 2 AM * TUESDAY – SUNDAY Mr. Myers explained that since our region made money on the Marble Books last year they were able to return money back to the chapters for the purpose of promoting motorcycle safety. This enabled the chapters in our region to make donations back to the state. Our Chapter donated $500 to the Legislative Branch where Troy Daugherty presented the check at the State Seminar. Members from our chapter attended the seminar and had a great time. We made several great contacts with fellow motorcycle chapters and met many nice people. The Seminars were well organized and contained excellent information regarding the offices that we serve. For me not having a lot of motorcycle knowledge it showcased why we do what we do. We encouraged everyone to attend next years’ Seminar. Also, congrats go out to all the A.B.A.T.E. Chapters who were recognized at and who attended the State Seminar; we all have a common goal and interest. Everyone did a great job! 618-244-4116 WWW.DALES-HD.COM Let Those Who Ride Decide We reminded members that on February 28th the State has asked us to help sell raffle tickets at the Swap Meet in Springfield. The Swap Meet is from 10 am – 4pm. Mary Schultz, Safety and Education Coordinator for our Chapter, created a Facebook Page for our Chapter. Check out all our upcoming events and find out what’s really going on in the Southwest Region. Go to www.facebook.com either login or create an account, once you have the account set up, at the top of the page you will see a white search bar, enter Kaskaskia Valley A.B.AT.E. of Illinois, Inc., and press enter, then add us as a friend. Feel free to post information about upcoming rides or events from your chapters, invite your members to join. Marble Books will be available at our March meeting at a cost of $10.00 each, if you have questions, please call Bob Dodson. Our Chapter voted to become a Gold Sponsor at the Meeting of the Minds in Peoria. Bud reminded us that we have four bills in committee right now regarding helmets, Trotter Senate Bill 2535 and 2536 and House Bill 5029 and 5031. See page 6 for more information on these Bills.
