West sets
house record at
Lakeview
Cliff West repeatedly crushed the
pocket Dec. 20 for a career-high 868 series and established a new house record
at Lakeview Bowling Center. It was also
his first career 800 series.
“I keep telling everyone I got my
Christmas gift early,” West said. “I
didn’t think I’d ever do it (roll an 800
series). Rarely do I have a night without
any hiccups.”
West went on his strike rampage using a Brunswick Ringer ball in the Friday Men’s League. The right-hander
registered 33 out of a possible 36 strikes
for three games. West fired games of
300, 299 and 269 for three award scores
(perfect game, 11-in-a-row and 800 series) in one night.
West’s 868 series beat Ed Batruch’s
house record by one pin. West’s previous career-high was a 788 series. The
37-year-old from West Monroe rolled
his all-time high series on lanes 1-2.

usually dry out but they played well for
me.”
West started drawing the attention of
league bowlers at the end of game 2. He had 23 strikes in a row before he left a 10-pin on
his last ball for a 299. His perfect game was his third career.
“I almost left the 7-10 but the 7-pin fell over,” West said.
West ignored his nerves and finished strong for his first 800.
“I tried not to think too far ahead and stayed focused on what I was doing,” he said. “I
tend to get too excited when I’m bowling well and I didn’t want to do that or get out of my
rhythm.”
West chose a ring for his award. His 868 is the top series in the city so far this season.

In other highlights, Bob Piraino had the

Youker takes home Y BT title
East Syracuse Minoa eighth-grader Haley Youker
won her division Dec. 15 at the Youth Bowlers Tour
Western New York Region event held Dewey Gardens
in Rochester. The left-handed Youker placed first in the
handicap division. It was her first YBT title.
Qualifying consisted of a four-game block with the
top 24 scores advancing to the next round. The top 24
bowl another three games and the top four qualify for

the stepladder finals. Three divisions are offered: handicap, scratch and classic.
Joey Clavelli, of Oswego, finished tied for
third in the scratch division. Jordan Kensinger, of Weedsport, finished tied for third
in the handicap division.
The YBT Western New York Region includes Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse and the
Southern Tier. The YBT holds 16 events
around the state for the 2013-14 season in-
cluding Junior Gold Qualifiers, YBT coordinator Jack Moran said.
The events draw between 80 to 120 junior
players depending on tournament location,
Moran added.
The YBT started in the early 1980s as
a way for junior bowlers to compete for
scholarship money. Points are awarded to
players based on their respective tournament finishes.

Past, present and
future of the sport
that means
so much to me
by Richard “Trap” Trapnell
Ladies Classic
bowlers display
holiday spirit
I applaud all the bowlers who have won championships and all the individuals
who are members of the Syracuse Hall of Fame because they deserve it. Bowlers
who will someday enter the Hall of Fame or win a major championship are a part
of a different generation of bowlers. This does not mean they are not accomplished bowlers as back in the day. It just means they compete in a different era.
Today’s bowlers still have to perform and perfect their game on today’s tournament conditions not easy house patterns. The trouble with that is it may be harder
to find those types of tournaments in this area and the state in this day and age.
I look at the high school level and youth travel leagues of today and wonder
if they could bring this game back to being a sport. Without the young bowlers
advancing to adult leagues and tournaments, where will the game be?
This game can bring new friends and great memories into your life as it has
mine. I never take them for granted. Congratulate them for high scores no matter what your skill level. A sincere handshake or a pat on the back doesn’t cost
anything.
Please remember to keep bowling, no matter what caliber bowler you are. Strive
to improve by practicing instead of keeping your handicap as high as possible.
Remember that practice may not make you perfect but it can make you better. The
better you are at something the more you’ll want to do it.
Maybe that is has hurt bowling, less than half of today’s bowlers want to get
better through practice. Let’s try to bring the dignity back into bowling. Join a
league, practice to get better and enjoy the sport. If you want or need help with
your game there are many places and people to help starting with your favorite
pro shop.
Good luck and good bowling to all that love this sport as much as I do and
always have.

Pin-Breaking News
from the Youth Desk
by Seline Weiskopff, Association Manager
A very special thank you to junior bowlers Kenny Kopp and John-Luke Bounfiglio who
donated their old bowling balls for other youth bowlers to use. Also thank you to Teddy Melnyk for your donation as well. This program continues to grow and I currently have several
balls available so if any youth needs a ball please contact me at [email protected].
It’s been a great season so far. Even though youth numbers are down, I see lots of young
talent coming up! Each week I’m impressed and inspired as I watch these kids bowl. They all
deserve a big congrats for their efforts.
If you need an entry form, any info on the upcoming tournaments or balls please contact
me at: [email protected]
Good luck and good bowling!
