From Your Regional Coordinator…
Happy Fall Everyone,
I’m feeling very busy. I’ve got to get my garden to bed and get ready for the upcoming
season… and pack for Molly’s Danube River Cruise. Yep, I did it again. It was so
much fun last year I’m doing it again.
Unfortunately, this means I will miss attending this year’s Holiday Party. I am a
member of Mini Misfits, so I worked on the project and planning for the event. I hope
you enjoy the project as much as I do. Thank you to Sue Ann and the Misfits. By the
way Sue and her club have a display at the Damascus Heritage Museum. A lot of work
went into this exhibit and it is definitely worth a trip or two. The theme will change
after Halloween to show more Christmas displays. Joe Rodriguez, one of our members,
video-taped the display and put it on YouTube. It is about a twenty minute video. If
you want a virtual tour, go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fExHTJBPf4.
Good show. Thank you, Joe!!
Stacy and MMU have volunteered to host next year’s Holiday Party. Thank you so
much. She showed me what they are planning as a project and it is “Super Cute.” I
know it is early, but… speaking of volunteering, I welcome volunteers! I would be
grateful for any help you may wish to offer. Just let me know what you have in mind.
I’d also welcome club reports. It does not have to be elaborate, just an introduction, a
line or two whatever. Brag a little about what your club is doing. Inspire us. Thanks!!
The NAME Convention was as awesome as ever. The highlight for me was getting on
stage with some of the 2017 committee at the Banquet on Saturday evening. Of course
we dressed up like clowns and giggled our way through the information. We got lots of
positive feedback about our performance and many promised to attend the convention.
Carol House won and totally earned Ambassadors’ Award this year. In addition to
being on the committee for Virginia State Day and the Southern Virginia Welcome
Committee, she organized our gala gift basket for the convention. Unfortunately, I did
not receive any information on how our basket did; but it sure did look fabulous. Thank
you, Carol, and everyone for your contributions.
Kudos to Laurie Sisson for her article in Miniature Collector, December 2015, page 37,

From your Maryland State Rep…
Summer and the National Convention in Indianapolis was great fun, even
though one of the two workshops I had signed up for was canceled. I earned a
Gold Star for accepting items for the garage sale. There was plenty of time to
visit with old friends and, of course, make some new ones, as the atmosphere of
the convention this year was very friendly and accepting.
September was Molly Cromwell's Tyson's Corner Show. This year for the children's workshop, there was
a wizard's table complete with books on magic and anatomy, a hat to make, a skull, and some crystals for
the older children. For the young ones, there was Oscar the Grouch in the trash can and a colorful pompom inchworm to put together. I would like to thank Molly for the opportunity to expose youngsters to
the wonderful world of miniatures.
Also in September, we worked on a doll house, but more about that later. Unfortunately October came
with NAME Day… and passed us by. Thanks to the terrible weather that flooded South Carolina, we
were unable to receive our NAME Day kits, so we had to postpone our event. It was sad for everyone.
For several years, the Friday Conundrums Miniature Club has refurbished and donated a doll house to an
ill or needy child. This year I learned that the Literacy Council of Carroll County had lost some of its
funding, so in an effort to reach out to the community, our group decided to donate this year's house to the
council for a raffle to raise money for to cover some of the operation expenses. The house was a sweet
four rooms plus attic, front opening structure, complete with furniture, an old woman and her dog! (See
the photos below) The winner was a single mom with a young daughter who had both wished and wished
really hard to win ~ proving that wishes really can come true! The Conundrums are now working on
another, much larger house, to donate to a worthy cause.
Hope to see many of you at the Christmas party!

The Peninsula Heritage Miniature Society had a bit of disappointment this
NAME Day because we were going to be getting together with the Virginia
Miniature Enthusiasts club. Due to coastal flooding the event was cancelled.
We are currently working on a vignette inspired by a local Girl Scout camp where some of our members
used to go camping. We are in the final stages of assembly and will shortly be donating it to the local Girl
Scouts. Our club will be getting together for a Thanksgiving dinner.

Carlotta Brewer Grinage
Carlotta Brewer Grinage of Suitland, Maryland, was called home to be with the Lord
on October 12, 2015. She was born in Norfolk, Virginia on January 29, 1949. She
was the third child of Marion and Oner Brewer. Carlotta's 36 year career with the
federal government allowed her to serve many agencies in a variety of positions in
the human resources arena.
We will all miss Carlotta's wonderful sense of humor and her beautiful smile. She always had a very
positive “can-do” spirit and was a wonderfully gifted artist. We are sad that she had to leave us so early
in her life.

NAME National Convention in E-1 in 2017!
We are now less than two years out to be prepared for the 2017 Convention, “Come to the Circus.”
Now the really intense work begins for all of the committee.
This past weekend, I spent Saturday and Sunday at the Great American Train Show in Timonium as a
representative of the Circus Model Builder’s Club (CMB). CMB had approximately 20-30 tables. The
club I belong to had a display of Train and Circus scenes in multiple scales and scenes. I was given two
tables to display circus items. My items were not related to the trains but more in line with how we
miniaturist work in vignettes. I am learning so much about the circus and its history. Some will be
helpful to our convention and some is just informational.
Unfortunately a valued member of our committee passed away this October. I am very sad to report that
Carlotta Grinage is no longer with us. She was chairperson of two of our committees. The two
committees are Houseparty Helper and Pre-Convention Workshops. If you are interested in being the
chairman of either of these committees please contact me at [email protected].

NEED TO DOWNSIZE? Consider this! . . . Welcome Back NAME Estate Auctions!
Hello! I'm Jennifer and I've been a member of NAME since 1997. I started out in the N2 region, but am
happily settled in E3 these days. And… I'm your shiny new NAME Estate Manager and Online
Auctioneer/Store Minder/Princess! (I made up some parts of this title.)
Well, actually, I just hope to be doing all that implies someday. Much of this is still just ideas and good
intentions. NAME has gifted me so much over the years; I really want to make this program successful
for us. Today, I'm definitely a newbie fresh on the job, and I have to admit that it is pretty hectic behind
the scenes here. I'm very excited to work on the Estate program, but what I don’t know about it could fill
an email box… and I’m sure it will! If you have an Estate question, tip, concern, or (most likely)
extravagant compliment, please email me at [email protected]. Thanks so much to everyone who
has already stepped up to help me. There's plenty of work ahead, but I am excited by the challenges. As
long as everyone keeps taking my panicky phone calls, please.
So, what am I doing? Well, I’ve been receiving and inventorying many generous donations. As fun as
organizing miniatures is, they weren’t actually donated to me, right? So, my next priority is the Estate
Auctions. It is so important to honor our donations. Let's get them back into the hands of adoring mini
enthusiasts!

something new to share. I hope this gives you some time! Class projects from conventions, club
meetings, club projects, won houseparty helpers or centerpieces… are all welcome... after all, our motto is
sharing them! Even if you exhibit the same item at Philadelphia Miniaturia or elsewhere, we welcome
your display. Our club will be doing the 2015 NAME Day “Window Shopping” so we hope you will
bring yours!
As we have done in the past, we provide a voucher to enter the show free for exhibiting. See the exhibit
form on page 6. You can check on our website at www.firststateminiclub.org for a copy of our postcard
with travel directions. Please email me at [email protected] or call at 302-654-8278 if you have

Back by popular demand..... Dollhouse Miniatures Exhibit!!!
Four years ago, the Mini Wonder Workers of Damascus, a 5-member club led by Sue Ann Ketchum,
exhibited their miniature roomboxes, vignettes, and scenes for a three-month period at the Damascus
Heritage Society Museum. They provided a sign-up sheet for visitors to see if there was enough interest
to start another club. Over 30 people signed up and came to the initial meeting. Sue has been mentoring
this new club for almost 4 years now. The members range in age from 10 - 89 years old and have a wide
variety of skill levels, and call themselves the Mini Misfits of Damascus.
The group made quite a few small projects during the first two years, however, during the third year, the
club members asked for a larger, ongoing project. Sue designed a garden shed with a landscaped base,
and the monthly projects were all related to the project. Several members finished their garden shed
project in time to be part of the club’s exhibit at the Damascus Heritage Society Museum. The exhibit
will be in place for four months, from October 7, 2015 – January 27, 2016.
Sponsored by the Damascus Library, the group meets one Saturday a month. In addition, club members
were recently given a cigar box, donated by Anita Fry of the Damascus Heritage Museum and have
created their own original miniature scenes. Some of these are already on display at the Museum, along
with lots of Fall holiday-related miniatures, and some other miniature items by individual club
members. Fall-themed miniatures will be in place until Thanksgiving weekend and then will be replaced
with Christmas-themed displays. The Damascus Heritage Museum is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays
from noon-4pm. Admission is free. It is located at 9701 Main Street, Damascus, MD 20872 in a
portable classroom behind the Damascus Library/Senior Center Building. There is a sign-up sheet in the
museum to start a new club that the Mini Misfits will mentor for a period of time. For group tours,

2015 "Wee Christmas at Kenmore"
A Wee Christmas at Kenmore
Dec 6-30 & Jan 8-10
Doll House Exhibition
Crowninshield Museum Building
Historic Kenmore
1201 Washington Ave.
Fredericksburg, VA 22401
Last year, The George Washington Foundation held
its first ever “Wee Christmas at Kenmore,” a
dollhouse and miniatures exhibit , and it was a huge
success! As a matter of fact, it was so well received
by our visitors, that not only are we planning to do
the exhibit again, I am reaching out to a broader
audience this year of miniatures enthusiasts to
hopefully be able to increase the size and variety of
our exhibit for this year.
A little background for you on our own Kenmore
dollhouse:
The George Washington Foundation owns an exact
miniature of Historic Kenmore, the colonial home
of Betty (George Washington’s sister) and her
husband, Fielding Lewis, furnished down to the
china on the table and paintings on the walls. The
house was a gift from Mrs. Florence S. White in
April 2000.
and a grand neighborhood it had! This Christmas
season we are reaching out to ask you to help us build
a neighborhood once again for our dollhouse!
I would certainly appreciate it if you would please
share this information with your clubs and friends.
Perhaps they have or know of someone who still has
their own beloved dollhouse, a room box, vignette or
other miniatures that they would like to share with
others. There is no theme and no item is “too
small.” I am attaching the guidelines for our exhibit
as well as a flyer that may be circulated. If you have
any questions or would like to contact me directly,
you can reach me at [email protected] or
540-370-0732 ext. 22
I would also like to invite you to visit our blog to
read and see a little more about the Kenmore
dollhouse and 2014 Wee Christmas at Kenmore:

Guidelines for Exhibitors
In our collections it is described as a wooden
dollhouse built by James Freytag in imitation of
Kenmore. The house has solid side walls and
removable front and back walls. Each room of
Kenmore is represented as the mansion was
interpreted in the 1980 ’s with a Dining Room,
Chamber, Drawing Room, Office, Upper and
Lower Passages, Children's Room, Mary
Washington's Room, Betty Lewis’ Room, and
Gentleman's Room. The roof, top floor and
ground floor detach from half of the basement that
is attached to the top of the table. The table has
folding legs, and the base is painted brown. The
cellar entrance is removable and so is the roof.
The house has electrical switches. A removable
portico fits on the rear of the house. Cornerstone
marked.
It is a beautiful piece that we have on display in our
museum building, but last fall we decided it has been
alone for far too long. We decided we wanted to
give it a “neighborhood” for the Christmas season ,
Exhibition dates: December 6-30, 2015 10:00 AM 4:00 PM & January 8-10, 2016 Twelfth Night
performances 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Registration: Send a digital image and brief
description by November 13, 2015, to Susan

Sunday, December 6th at 2:00 PM. Pick up dates:
Week of January 11, 2016 by appointment
Exhibit must be no larger than 3’x6’.
The George Washington Foundation will not be
responsible for damage to miniatures. To prevent or
minimize possible damage, exhibit will be monitored
and stanchions will be in place. Exhibitors will
receive two free passes to the miniature exhibit at
Historic Kenmore and the Gingerbread Contest and

Lilliput's Dollhouse Shop
The Dollhouse Shop in Richmond was purchased last October by Julie Silvester of LilliputsMinis. This
past June she moved it to a bigger, brighter location and renamed it Lilliput’s Dollhouse Shop. The store
gained several hundred square feet which allows her to offer a wide range of services, products and
classes.
Since taking over the shop, Julie has changed several store policies. For example, she offers a 10%
discount off all purchases every day for NAME members, military members, children, and those buying
for children. Her new return policy is basically “If you don’t like it, bring it back” becau se she never
wants anyone to regret a purchase. She also did away with room boxes that prevented customers from
truly looking at and holding the furniture. In their place she has created a “Wall of Bespaq” which is two
cubby-shelving units situated next to each other with each cubby being its own room. Every piece of
furniture she displays, whether adult collectibles or items suitable for children, is out of its box and
displayed on an open shelf or in a dollhouse on the fully landscaped and seasonally decorated Lilliput’s
Lane.
Julie has also increased the number of items and maker lines the store carries. She is now importing items
from England and Germany, which allows for a much greater selection in dolls, furniture and rugs. She
also increased the number of wallpapers the store offers from just about a dozen papers to almost 400.
Come see what is new and fall in love with miniatures all over again!

Mt Vernon Miniatures NAME Day Spooktacular!
An autumn chill filled the air as members and guests of the
Mt Vernon miniatures club arrived at the hauntingly
familiar John Marshall Library in Alexandria, VA, to
celebrate the 2015 NAME Day Spooktacular!
Enthusiasm fell upon us once again as members quickly set
up tables for workspaces, food, and scary exhibits. To our
delight, Window Shopping kits were distributed in festive
orange trick or treat shopping bags! Special thanks to
Pamn for her efforts organizing, packing, and distributing
the kits! Our industrious members quickly unpacked their
kits and lead the assembly of window framing, molding,
flooring, walls, and shelves according to detailed
instructions provided by cutter Jenny Yates. We look
forward to seeing the final creations!
Soon hunger came over us. Yummy snacks, deserts, and
beverages were enjoyed by all. The exhibit table included
creations from our Halloween challenge inspired by Pris
who shared skeletons with us last month.
Attendees included: Laurie S, Jane L, Pamn K, Jane
S, Leigh S, Julie A., Diane E., Annette H, Mindy C.,
