The Municipality of Lunenburg recognizes and will help to meet
the needs of people who have special needs. Staff will help
identify leisure needs by exploring the individual’s interest,
leisure involvement, awareness, skills, and available leisure
time. Barriers such as transportation, equipment, accessibility,
volunteer support time, fees, attitudes, and information will
be identified. Supports including resources, activity sampling
and equipment loan may be easily identified and provided.
By becoming more aware of and accessing supports, people
who have disabilities have greater recreation options available
to them. Anyone interested in discussing the possibilities may
contact Trudy Payne at 541-1333.

PARKS AND TRAILS
Fabulous Fall at Municipal Parks!
The MARC has miles of walking trails, ponds, fields, ball
diamonds, BMX park, mountain bike trails, playground, picnic
areas and a lovely view of the LaHave River. You can be active
or find a quiet spot to read a book. Indoor facilities are also
available for bookings. There are great rooms for parties and
meetings. The park is open 8:00 am to dusk year round.
Miller Point Peace Park has easy walking trails nestled in
towering pines along the shores of the LaHave River. Bring a
picnic lunch and enjoy river views. The park is open 8:00 am
to dusk year round. Gates close late fall for the winter months.
Another great place to hike is through the Indian Path
Common, along the Fish Peddler Road near Riverport. These
trails are more of a challenge as footpaths without a gravel
surface, and are enjoyed year round.
It may be too cool for a swim, but Mushamush Beach Park
is a lovely spot to visit in the fall. Take a leisurely stroll in the
sand or sit and look out over the water. Mushamush is open
8:00 am to dusk until late October. Gate closes in the fall for
the winter months.
At Indian Falls Park the water is cascading over the 20
foot rock falls. The maple, oak and poplar trees are changing
colors. Residents are encouraged to visit the park and enjoy the
seasonal changes. Bring a picnic lunch or just sit on the bench
and enjoy a beautiful autumn day. A short trail is now available
to view the falls from below.
Another nice spot for a visit is the United Communities
Marine Park in Vogler’s Cove. Enjoy this beautiful coastal area
from the shore or put in your kayak for a leisurely paddle.
Park seasonal closure dates vary for each park.
Visit our two new water access points at Church Lake, #331
Newburne Road, and Wiles Lake Park ,#3270 Hwy 325,
Wileville. Petite Riviere Park, located by the bridge in Petite
Riviere, is also a nice spot for a leisurely picnic or to put in a
small watercraft.
Please call 541-1343 for specific closure dates and facility
bookings or visit our website at www.modl.ca
Pine Grove Outdoor Park (POPA)
72 Charlie Lane, Pine Grove
Come enjoy the concrete pad, swings, walking trail, gazebo,
ramps for trail bikes, fire pit, and playground. Privy available
on site. POPA’s volunteers have worked diligently to provide
this park. Please help keep the site clean and maintained. Your
ongoing cooperation and support is appreciated. Volunteers
are welcome to join the Association to manage the park. Please
contact Sandra Statton at 543-4362 or [email protected]
for more information or to make a donation.
Lunenburg County Mountain Bike Association
(LCMBA) is a non-profit organization with the goal to create
local mountain biking opportunities for riders of all ages and
skill levels. The group has been creating multi-use single track
trail throughout the upper portion of the MARC property in
Dayspring. Three trails are open for use:
Serpentine trail (beginner level) is accessed off of Home Run
near Milkshake. The Granite Express and Feather and Iron
trails are intermediate and accessed off Cliff Hanger, very near
the Home Run/Cliff Hanger intersection. With the support of MODL, NS Health & Wellness and other
grants, the association has opened a new Mountain Bike
Skills Park, located off the ballfields parking lot. $10 annual
LCMBA memberships are available at local bike shops with all
proceeds funding trail initiatives. Volunteer trail builders are
welcome! For more information about LCMBA, check us out
on Facebook at www.facebook.com/lcmba or email lcmba1@

Disc Golf at the MARC
– NEW AND IMPROVED!
The MARC is now equipped with a complete 9-hole disc
golf – the first completed course on the South Shore! This
course is your classic “city park” style disc golf course. All
the baskets are placed in friendly locations to minimize
the amount of lost discs and unpleasant stances, and is
an enjoyable, simple to play course. The course is marked
with tee off signs (9 red tees for amateur and 9 blue tees
for experienced) and a map of the course is located on
the back of the kiosk near the parking lot. Discs are also
available for loan by contacting Tissy at 541-1336. See
page 6 for Grand Opening event!

PERSONAL INTEREST
MODL | www.modl.ca | 541-1343
Creative Non-Fiction
We read non-fiction daily in magazines, newspapers,
biographies, personal essays, history, travel writing, food
writing, memoirs and so on. Even so, many people ask “What,
exactly, is creative non-fiction?” It is a hybrid form combining
literary style and factual material. It can be playful, evocative,
and imaginative, while at the same time, it can communicate
factual information. We will work in a safe, supportive, and
positive environment. The course will help participants write
creative non-fiction in their own unique voices, and will work
well for beginners and experienced writers alike.
Instructor Biography: Beth Munroe is an experienced
writer and teacher. Her poetry and short fiction have been
published in literary magazines and her documentaries have
been broadcast on CBC Radio. Beth has won several writing
prizes, among them The Governor General’s Michener Medal
for Excellence in Fine Arts: Creative Writing. Beth is comfortable
teaching writers at all stages of the creative process from
beginners to advanced.

Neighbours Helping Neighbours Initiative
Consider adopting a senior or someone with a disability by
taking part it the “Rake it Forward” and/or “Stack it
Forward” campaigns. Help them with raking leaves and
stacking firewood. These activities present an obstacle and
burden that endangers the lives of seniors and prevents our
seniors and disabled from getting the care and support that
their lives depend on. Seniors that take on these tasks on
their own put themselves at serious risk that can result in
bone breaking falls, heart attack and strokes. A little act of
kindness this fall could save a life. How powerful is that?
Volunteer as an individual, family, business or school to help
people who really need it.
If you are a senior or someone with a disability and have
no one to help you, please register with Flourish Well
Being Society by calling 543-1727. Not all requests can be
supported.

IN THE COMMUNITY
A Year of Awesomeness on the South Shore
Each month, people answer two simple questions telling us how

to make their idea become a reality.
What’s your idea for making the South Shore a more awesome place?
