Director’s Annual Report
2012/2013
We kicked off our fiscal year on August 17, by presenting 1964 The Tribute
Beatles group at Long Center for Performing Arts. Thanks to our sponsors and
the leadership of Nancy Stone, it was a “fab” success, raising over $17,000 for the
museum! On September 15, Chair-ity concluded with a live auction of chairs in
the East Gallery, netting a total of $27,659, thanks to committee “Chair Person” Elizabeth Lockrey.
Thanks to generous gifts by David Fan, Hung Fan, Vicky Black and Frances MacDonald, we had a
grand opening celebration for the Manya Fan Art Education Center, attended by local and state dignitaries, on October 20. Led by Sue Carr, we entered the second year of our partnership with Oakland High
School, providing art classes weekly with over 20 volunteer art educators. Without our partnership these
students would not be exposed to the fine arts or creative expression.
Our fall 2012, exhibition featured Navajo Rugs and Pueblo Pottery from two private collections. Near
the end of the exhibition something wonderful happened. Mike and Mary Lou Hasegawa decided to
donate their entire 89-piece collection of contemporary Native American pottery to the Art Museum.
The Hasegawa Collection contains several works from each of 20 pueblos and we are grateful for their
generosity.
Our winter Celebration of Haitian Art was the fifth consecutive partnership with the Purdue University
Black Cultural Center and was one of the most exciting exhibits of Haitian culture and history that has
been presented to our community. In February, we held the fourth annual Heart of Art fund-raising event
at the Lafayette Country Club and raised a record net income of $51,625 with 218 in attendance! In addition $2,750 was donated to our new Education Endowment at the Community Foundation of Greater
Lafayette and it was matched 25% by the foundation.
We are happy to have added Michael Crowthers to our staff as the Curator of Collections Exhibitions
and Education in February. He has become an invaluable asset to our studio arts programs, our permanent collection and has raised the bar for our exhibits. Michael is a wonderful advocate and representative
for the Art Museum, which has been reinforced by positive comments from all of our affiliated groups.
We were proud to have the opportunity to exhibit the ‘Round the Fountain Art Fair Collection: 40th
Anniversary collection of art during the month of May. Then, thanks to the creative ideas of Linda
Vanderkolk, we presented Visions of Community, in which all citizens were invited to exhibit an 8 X 10
image for exhibition in our galleries. Over 700 people responded and we had a special event to celebrate
“Visions” at the Black Cultural Center in June.
We are fortunate to have our landscaping improved with grants from the Community Foundation
and Tipmont REMC. But the most important contribution is the Greater Lafayette Master Gardeners
decision to adopt our museum and care for our grounds. I give special thanks to Elizabeth Lockrey and
Candace Larsen for making this happen. The greatest gift to our museum is the gift of time and we are
thankful for the many of you who devote your lives to fine arts education and appreciation.

ANNUAL REPORT 2012-2013 |
President’s Annual Report 2012/2013
During the 2012-2013 year, our board of directors performed at a high level
from a governance standpoint. Their actions were both thoughtful and strategic. The board worked well with our dedicated museum staff, which welcomed
Michael Crowthers as our new Curator of Collections Education and Education. Also, the boards of the museum and the museum’s Foundation have begun
to collaborate on such matters as fund-raising. Together, all three of these
accomplishments have created an environment that should result in increased
volunteerism at the museum for years to come!
We continued to engage our members and potential new members through
creative and enjoyable events over the past year. In February, our Heart of Art
dinner and silent/live auction was sold out! The generosity of the members and guests present that
evening resulted in net revenue of $51,625, which will benefit the museum. A large part of the success
of this event year after year is the seasoned and dedicated volunteers who plan and execute the event.
Our hats go off to them!
During the spring, the Art League’s fashion show was once again a packed event and raised $12,054,
which will be used by this dedicated group of women volunteers as they continue to support the Art
Museum by acting as docents and providing hospitality support at each of our exhibit openings.
In the early part of the summer our Visions of Community Event held at the Purdue University
Black Cultural Center (BCC) was very successful. Not only did BCC provide a nice backdrop from
which to display the art work of so many of our community members, it also raised the awareness level
of our members and guests who, I think, walked away from the event realizing just what a cultural gem
the BCC is for our community.
We concluded the summer with our Bourbon & BBQ event held in cooperation with the Lafayette
Symphony Orchestra and the Tippecanoe County Historical Association. This event was also a sellout!
The event was designed to be an awareness event and potential members outnumbered members at the
event as they all milled about the Moses Fowler House dining on barbecue and enjoying a small-batch
bourbon tasting with spirits donated by the Jim Beam Co.
A bus trip (2 sold out motor coaches) to Chicago to tour the Art Institute of Chicago and Susanin’s
Auction House in September capped a successful year of special events!
Our board voted to renew our support of Oakland High School and its art curriculum. The lives of
so many students who might not otherwise have exposure to art continue to be positively impacted
through this partnership and the efforts of Sue Carr.
On December 31, 2013 the Agency Endowment Matching Campaign offered by the Community
Foundation of Greater Lafayette will conclude. As of this writing, the museum has raised $24,469,
which will be placed in an endowment for the future benefit of our museum.
Our members, volunteers, donors and staff are all to be thanked for making this a memorable and
fun-filled year!
Respectfully submitted,
Jeffrey W. Love

our recently adopted funds disbursement policy, the Foundation distributed $43,
431 to the Art Museum during fiscal year 2012/2013. Our entire Board is pleased
that the dream so many years ago of a vibrant Foundation, filled with the living
gifts of so many, that provides for a sustainable income to the Museum has been
fulfilled.
2013 marked two significant milestones concerning how the Foundation relates
to the Museum. An effort spearheaded by Alberta Barker has led the formation
of a combined, Museum board and Foundation board, Advancement Committee. As the footprint of the organizations grow in our community, and beyond,
we felt that it was critical to ensure that all of our efforts in fund-raising were well
coordinated and were consistent with the overall objectives of both “entities”.
Along with the coordinated fund-raising effort, our Board felt that it was important to revisit the technical construction of the Foundation as an entity. Simply
put, the Foundation while always having exclusively supported the Museum, was
not legally required to do so. After may long hours of research and planning by
Renee Congdon, two special meetings of the board, and a vigorous debate it was
proposed that our IRS tax status be changed. We were a “public charity” and the
proposal to become a 501c-3, 509(a)(3) “supporting organization” would mean
that we can only provide financial support the Art Museum. The Board felt that
this was always the intention of the founders of the organization, and on July 24,
the board voted unanimously to make that change. Renee has formed a task force
to update the Foundation by-laws so they are in compliance with IRS rules.
I want to thank the board members for actively participating in board and committee meetings and for focusing on improving our Foundation.

Education Report
2012-2013 With the Manya Fan Education Center reconstruction, guilds, classes, and tours continued to improve and grow. Richard Hamrlik assembled all the rolling storage units, which now allows
each faculty member to have their own storage. The new space is an aesthetic experience for all!
Education Committee-Members are Jane Boswell, Sue Carr, Meg Ellis, Carol Purdy, Cheryl Rosenthal, Bridget Santon, Renee Thomas, Kathy Trout and Linda Vanderkolk. Michael Crowthers and
Kendall Smith participate as staff members. Recently we adopted a mission statement for the Manya
Fan Education Center and it is: “The mission of the Manya Fan Art Education Center is to enrich the
quality of life through exemplary instruction in art production, history, criticism aesthetics and museum
experiences.”
Faculty- Lorie Amick, Elizabeth Beeson, Jane and Jeff Boswell, Ron Burgess, Sue Perry, Boyd Smith
Jennifer Reitmeyer, Bridget Santon, Judy Titche and James Werner. This group continued to implement the Faculty Policies and Procedures Handbook provided by Jane Boswell and they all helped to
promote more advertising and regular use of banners to announce classes. In addition a subcommittee
formed to organize student and guild work for scheduled MFEC gallery exhibits. Several students
have been featured with one-man/woman showcases. Currently 28 classes are being offered. IUPUI
will offer three Continuing Education courses at the museum for their Community Learning Network.
Guilds- Tuesday Painters, coordinated by Robert Lempke, the Fabric Guild coordinated by Helen Radavich, and Photography Guild coordinated by Alex Buntin. A Life Drawing guild is being planned.
Oakland High School collaboration: For the third year Sue Carr provided her expertise as a volunteer Art Educator/Liaison for LSC’s Oakland High School. The objective was to provide art experiences for the 65 students and 29 volunteers who were involved during the 2012-2013 school year. Sue
worked with the school faculty, Education Committee members, volunteer art teachers and artists to
make art an integral part of science, mathematics, and the humanities programs at Oakland. Thirteen
students were enrolled in Art for credit classes during this past year and tours of AMGL Exhibitions
were planned for all students. As part of our Community Partnership, the Art Museum of Greater
Lafayette also used the OHS art classrooms for museum studio classes when needed. The studio is
equipped by the generosity of many community groups and businesses. In addition, many “StudiOHS”
events were held during the school year for all students. Funding was through grants from Target
Corporation and Kiwanis Foundation.
Scheduled tours included a variety of groups from Purdue; Bauer Center, Hanna Center, YWCA
Camp, Young Professionals, Westminster Village, schools (preschoolers, home schoolers, parochial and
public ) Most tour groups participated in related activities in the studios as well as the exhibits in the
galleries, all planned by Meg Ellis and Cheryl Rosenthal. Many tours included entering the Visions of
Community exhibit and on June 29 activities on the lawn between the Art Museum and TCHA after
the Box Parade were directed.
Education Committee members are planning a docent call-out and training session as we continue to
make the museum accessible to all.

Art Partners: Sharon Theobald led the Art Partners with art enrichment sessions throughout the year
including talks on all the museum exhibitions, special presentations on art by curators and gallery directors, as well as research on art and artists. The Art Partners led tours of the exhibits at the museum and
traveled to museums and artist studios for art education extension programs. Many Art Partners help with
tours and they are Kathryn Clark, Sue Carr, Jan Ditto, Peggy Housley, Therese Lynch, Inge Maresh, Meg
Ellis, Josette Rolley, Cheryl Rosenthal, Ann Sputh, Jo Thomas, Susan Chavers, Kathy Trout, and Linda
Vanderkolk. The Art Partners Program is free and open to all museum members.

Exhibitions Committee Annual Report
The Exhibitions Committee had a busy year organizing nine exhibitions in our main galleries, four special exhibitions in
the Shook Room, four new exhibits for the Weil Gallery permanent collection area and three in the Connie and Richard
Grace Foyer. Several exhibitions included an educational program made up of gallery talks and/or workshops on the area
of interest featured in the exhibition. These exhibitions are listed below with a few details of their content.
May 18 – September 12, 2012 East Gallery
THE BROWN COUNTY ART GUILD: JURIED EXHIBITION
The Brown County Art Guild is made up of over 50 contemporary artist members creating some of the very finest artwork in the Midwest. The
exhibition, juried by Robert and Ellen Haan, featured 45 works selected from guild members entries. These works represented the best of these
artists’ work and covered topics from landscape paintings to figure paintings. Sponsored by: Brown County Art Guild Inc. Gallery of fine Arts
May 18 – September 12, 2012 East and Weil Galleries, plus Dick and Connie Grace Foyer
CHAIR-ITY: WILD AND CRAZY CHAIRS
This fundraising event invited community artists and organizations to create decorated and/or altered chairs for an exhibition and auction to
benefit Art Museum programs. Artists used paint, mosaic, decoupage, fabric and numerous other approaches on a new or used chair, recliner,
highchair, wheelchair or bench. The resulting over 100 chairs made for a spectacular exhibit and a significant fundraising result from numerous sponsors and individuals who purchased the finished chairs. In addition to the exhibit of crazy chairs, there was an invitational show of
works of art by area artists, with “chair” themes, installed “above the chair rail” in the galleries. Sponsored by: La Z Boy and Henriott Group
May 18 – September 12, 2012 Mickey Shook Gallery
THE CLAY’S THE THING: AN INVITATIONAL EXHIBIT BY MUSEUM POTTERY STUDENTS
Works of clay from numerous students and teachers Jeff and Jane Boswell were on display throughout the Shook Gallery. This exhibit gave
viewers an idea of the variety of objects that can be made of clay and the outstanding talents of students in the Art Museums’ pottery classes.
Why not consider joining this group by enrolling in one of the beginning, intermediate or advanced classes.
September 28 – December 18, 2012 East Gallery
NAVAJO RUGS AND PUEBLO POTS: FROM THE COMPTON AND HASEGAWA COLLECTIONS
Jean and Dale Compton’s contemporary hand-woven Native American rugs are truly works of art produced by native Navajo weavers of the
Southwestern United States. The rugs in this exhibition were collected for over 50 years and displayed a wide range of colors and patterns.
Mike and Mary Lou Hasegawa’s pottery collection started about 20 years ago. The exhibit included pieces from all 19 pueblos in New Mexico
and one in Arizona. The pottery was handmade by well known 20th and 21st century potters, using traditional methods and materials. The
museum was pleased to receive this collection as a gift from the Hasegawa’s at the end of the exhibit. The works now reside in the Art Museum’s permanent collection. Works from these two collectors gave our community an opportunity to become familiar with these outstanding
art forms from the Southwest.

VISIONS: FOUR INDIANA PAINTERS
Paintings by renowned Indiana contemporary artists, Ken Bucklew, Joel Knapp, David Slonim and Jerry Smith created a powerful image of
the current art of Indiana.
With limitations, due to a spinal cord injury in 1975 resulting in total paralysis, Ken Bucklew went on to be a successful commercial artist,
college instructor and the all time winner of the Indiana Water- fowl and Game Bird Stamp competitions. His paintings are mostly scenes
from his native area of southern Indiana and are in collections around the country.
Joel Knapp is a devoted plein air and studio painter, who feels that the essence of a place can best be captured by experiencing it directly. His award- winning oil paintings have been displayed at the Hoosier Salon and numerous other art shows and paint-outs and are a permanent part of corporate and private collections throughout the U.S. and Europe.
David Slonim is an artist and children’s author/ illustrator. His oil paintings are interpretations of nature observed, remembered and often re-imagined. He earned a bachelor’s degree in illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design. Between freelance commercial illustration jobs, he began to paint in oils.
Crawfordsville artist, Jerry Smith, finds inspiration for his paintings traveling back roads of Indiana or the Maine coast. A graduate of Indiana State University, he is a lifelong Indiana resident and self-taught artist.
September 28, 2012 – March 17, 2013 Weil Gallery
FACELIFTS-THE ART OF THE CONSERVATOR: WORKS FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION CONSERVED BY BARRY BAUMANN
Over the past several years Barry Bauman, a nationally recognized professional conservator from Chicago, restored 33 works in our Permanent Collection to their original luster with no charge for his labors. The exhibit of these works was intended as a special recognition to him
for his generosity and to educate our community regarding the importance of conservation as part of an excellent art collection. His gallery
talk “ Discoveries in the Conservation of Paintings”, was one of the most riveting and enjoyable given at the Art Museum in recent years.
January 11 – March 17, 2013 East and McDonald Galleries
A CELEBRATION OF HAITIAN ART: WORKS FROM THE WATERLOO CENTER OF THE ARTS COLLECTION
Despite their nation’s history of political upheaval, the artists of Haiti flourish and create vibrant works of art. This exhibit, selected from the
extensive collection of the Waterloo Center for the Arts in Iowa, presented highly stylized, visually stimulating and thought provoking works
depicting scenes of Haitian labor, life, celebration, mythology, beliefs and practices. Bucolic, mystic and surreal themes were the subjects of
paintings, pierced steel or wooden sculptures and sequined flags. Sponsored by: Purdue University Black Cultural Center and IU Health

FABRICS: A TRIBUTE TO MANYA FAN
A special exhibition of fabric works from the Art Museum Fabric Guild was on display to pay tribute to Manya Fan, the Guilds first President. Works included those from current Guild members as well as several by Manya Fan. The opening of this exhibit accompanied the
dedication of the Manya Fan Education Center, made possible by a monetary gift from her children.

ALLA PRIMA PORTRAITS: FACES OF OUR COMMUNITY BY JAMES WERNER
A collection of about 50 oil portraits on 18” x 24” panels was assembled by James Warner over the summer. Community members were
invited to his studio for live portraits that were completed in one sitting of 1-2 hours. This “Alla Prima” style of painting resulted in a colorful
display that covered the walls of the Mickey Shook Room for the entire summer. Several demonstration paintings were done by the artist at
meetings of Art Museum organizations and invited groups.

seen art form to the Museum. A second part of the exhibit, “Wrest in Peace” featured video of a performance she presented
in Japan featuring live male and female models covered with wet clay arm wrestling to a standstill and still life pictures of
large presentations of her wet clay techniques to express conflict and emotion through this media.

ANNUAL REPORT 2012-2013 | 25
Collections Committee Report
Exciting new categories and collecting opportunities have been added to the permanent collections as
a result of recent gifts. Eighty-nine pieces of Southwest pottery representing 20 New Mexico Pueblos
and Navajo and Hopi peoples of Arizona were the gifts of Michael and Mary Lou Hasegawa. They were
featured in the exhibition Navajo Rugs and Pueblo Pots last fall. Thirty-seven Stone carvings by the Inuit
peoples above the Canadian Arctic Circle were the gifts of Albert Ewell. These will be shown in a Weil
Gallery exhibit beginning in January 2014. Another important addition to the collection was the oil painting, Forest Landscape, by John Wesley
Hardrick, gift of Bill and Sharon Theobald. This joins another work in the Museum’s collection by this
African American artist who studied with Otto Stark and William Forsyth and exhibited with William
Edward Scott. William and Mary Nordyke of Albuquerque, New Mexico presented an untitled oil painting by Jacob
Cox to the Museum. It is the first work by this artist in the collection and as such is an important
acquisition because Cox was one of the earliest Indiana painters of note, recognized for his landscapes
and portraits, particularly those of several of Indiana’s governors.
A delightful contemporary work, Chalk Drawing, by David Slonim was purchased for the Museum by the
Art League and joins a growing number of significant works presented to the collection by this valuable
Museum support group.
Conservation continues to be a concern of the collections committee. Four works were taken to Chicago
conservator, Barry Bauman, were restored and returned along with four works that were delivered to him
earlier. These were Swirling Waters, by Samuel Birch; Mountains, by Maurice Braun; Woman Spinning,
by Robert Grafton; Ramona’s Wedding Place, by O.L. Foster; Lake Michigan, by Otto Stark; Landscape
with Sheep, by Barton Hayes; Untitled, by Gayle Porter Haskins; and Autumn Scene, by Sister Rufinia. These works were exhibited, along with twenty-seven other works in Facelifts: the Art of Conservator, Barry
Bauman in Weil Gallery from September 28, 2012 through May 31, 2013. Seven more works from the
collection are currently being restored.
Drawings from the permanent collection opened in Weil Gallery June 14 and continues. Grace Foyer offers a place to display recent acquisitions. Works shown this year were Hardrick’s Forest
Landscape, Cox’s untitled oil, two works by Arne Kvaalen, Lily Pond With Curly Dock and McKinly Place,
and Larry Spears’ Wall Pods. This year the committee has focused on assessing and refining the collection. After a careful review
of the museum’s paintings, a small number have been identified as possible candidates for deaccession. These will be thoroughly researched and discussed by the committee members before presentation to the
board for approval. This is a process not undertaken lightly and will be an ongoing process for the next
several years.
