From Chairman’s Desk
Dear friends,
We have a long-standing heritage of commitment to excellence, leadership and innovation. These
are the attributes that have served us well through more than 50 years of growth, and they will
continue to serve us in the future. We believe that success of an organisation lies in its ability to
produce quality products very efficiently on a sustained basis. We have always been constantly
striving to surpass our own standards of excellence, when it comes to quality, efficiency and
technology leadership.
It is the people who work for the company that makes a company great. Our success is derived
not only from the drive of our employees and the strength of our system, but also from their
commitment and dedication, which enable us to provide our customers with best quality products
and services. We are pleased to have you as part of Ramco family. Every person's job is important,
not only to their own success, but also to the success of entire organisation. I encourage you to
look at your job objectively for opportunities to cut wastage, to improve quality and to enhance
efficiency.
One thing with which people readily associate the name Ramco is ‘ethics’. It takes a life-long
practice even for an individual to earn this reputation, and all it takes is just one small blemish to
wipe away such reputation built over a lifetime. That being the case with an individual person, you
know what it takes for a corporate group to earn the reputation of being a ‘company of ethics and
integrity’. We owe this to our strong and steadfast allegiance to the values of ethics and integrity,
which we have imbibed from our revered Founder. I urge you all to not only stay rooted in practising
these values, but also to inculcate them among the young people who come into Ramco family.
Focused on long term growth, I ask you to pay attention to the vital factors of cost efficiency
and customer focus that can help us forge a strong future. I welcome your ideas and suggestions
for making continuous improvement.
I hope that new employees who have joined Ramco in the recent past find their work enjoyable
and that our employees make all newcomers feel welcome. I encourage you to get to know other
Ramco people throughout the organization. Let’s continue to create a working environment that
gives employees the opportunity to develop their best selves and to do their best work.
Wishing you and your family members Happy Deepavali!

Message from our CEO
Dear Colleagues,
As we march on with our journey of facing new challenges and creating newer milestones, we have been
steadfastly learning new lessons from the challenges and adapting to the environmental changes. We
continue to have uncertainties in the business environment and we are yet to cross tougher days. In the
current scenario, where uncertainty has become the new certainty, we need to chart our road-map that
can accommodate multiple approaches to deal with uncertainties.
What has been of immense help in handling this challenge of complexity and uncertainty is our effective
use of information systems and our innovative ideas in all the operating fields. We have been making the
best use of Information Technology for several years now that we are now recognised for exemplifying
the highest level of excellence in information technology.
At a time when our Hon’ble Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi has launched “Digital India” movement
to transform our country into digital empowered society, we, at Ramco, are really proud to be a part of
this nation-building movement. We have made innovative efforts in harnessing IT for bringing transparency
and responsiveness in our systems and processes. We have ushered in new technologies like mobile and
cloud based applications to deliver business value and enable growth. Our efforts are now widely
recognised and we have been conferred with the CIO100 Award for fourth time by the IDG (International
Data Group) and we are also now admitted in to their exclusive “CIO Hall of Fame”.
As we move forward, I would like to draw your attention to current situation where our capacity
utilization is still hovering around sixty percent of our installed capacity. While we should make all out
efforts to boost the demand for our products, it is imperative that we stay focused on key issues like
enhancing the equipment efficiency, improving business processes, reducing the idle running of
equipments, energy conservation etc. We are in a very decisive stage and we cannot afford to take things
as a matter of routine. So in order to achieve better results, we are required to stringently explore all
possibilities for improvement and strive towards better performance.
Our entire team is expected to be cost conscious, quality sensitive and to display accountability,
transparency and integrity in our professional as well as personal life. As we go about our daily work, I
urge to set aggressive goals in the above areas and then work towards achieving them with tenacity and
enthusiasm.
I wish you all the very best.

Dr Kalam: Epitome Of Simplicity
S.Muthukrishnan, Administrator - Education
It was 5th September 2006, Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi was crowded by a group of
teachers and their family members from all over India. The teachers had come to
receive the Natiional Award from their President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. More than
250 teachers had been selected from all over India for their outstanding contribution
to education. Every teacher was proud to be receiving the Award from a great
personality like Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. I am proud to say that I was also one among
them. Previous day when the rehearsal was conducted, we were strictly told not to
shake hand with the President and not to enter into any conversation with him.
There was absolute silence as the President entered. After a brief introduction, the
President started to deliver his speech. Though he had a note prepared for the occasion,
he did not read but made an extempore speech befitting the occasion. He gave us Ten
Commandments to be followed and congratulated us all. He said that our service to
student community did not end with the Award, but it should make a new beginning.
There was a thunderous applause at the end of his speech.
When the Awards were distributed, he shook hands with every teacher and asked a
few questions to everyone connected to teaching. We were surprised by his simplicity.
Before the meeting concluded, he came to the mike and extended a personal invitation
to us all to attend a High Tea that evening, arranged in Rashtrapathy Bhavan. I could
listen to a teacher from U.P, who sat next to me, saying that we are fortunate to have
such a President who was not only cordial, but also who respected teachers. Indeed
we could perceive that he really honoured us.

Ramco Bhandham Story Of
Om Sakthi Marketing ‘Ramesh’
By
Ramesh Barath, Sr, DGM,
Brand Management
125 years ago, in the year 1889 to be precise, when
Madras Presidency was being ruled by the Queen of
England, a textile retail firm by the name of C.N.Ethirajan
& Co. came up in Godown Street, Broadway, Madras.
Little would Shri Natesa Chettiar have imagined at that
time that he was sowing the seeds for a business house
that would become synonymous with reliability and
credibility. He ventured overseas and his operations
covered Malaysia, Singapore and Ceylone as well. Shri
Natesa Chettiar was none other than the maternal great
grandfather of Subramanian alias Ramesh of M/s. Sri Om
Sakthi Cement Marketing, one of our biggest cement
dealers of today.
A.B.Selvanatham Chettiar, the paternal Grand Father
of Ramesh was the founder of Cement Business in 1936
from a humble beginning from the home town of
TIRUVALLUR. His experience with cement had started
way back in 1936 when he imported cement from
England in 100 Kg Dabbas called ‘Peepas’.
Ramesh recalls with pride how his maternal grandfather
Shri N.Vedachalam Chettiar, S/o Natesa Chettiar was a
philanthropic landlord of his times and was instrumental
22 Ramco Bhandham

in starting business with RAMCO with cement from R R Nagar in
1967.
1976 saw the beginning of cement decontrol and by 1982 the
decontrol was complete. It was in that year Ramesh entered the
family business along with his maternal uncle Shri Arumugam,
and started opening branches in Madras, in the name of Sri Om
Sakthi Agencies.
The important date etched in Ramesh’s memory is 16th January
1982. On that day Ramesh, all of 17 years, sat all night on the
platform in Salt Quarters grappling with receipt of 1400 MT of
cement, with not even a delivery note book in hand. Having only
seen his father retailing cement till then, Ramesh was literally
shaken up by this onslaught. His vision suddenly expanded and
made him realise that large scale operations alone can create a
mega impact.
Two decades prior to Ramesh’s entry into the business, in the
year 1962, his father Shri Shanmugam had started opening
branches all over Chengalpet district from Villiwakkam to
Arakonam. He went on a blitzkrieg and opened a total of 33
branches to cover the complete stretch, so much so that he would
stop at every railway station, take orders for cement and collect
cash every day. In 1967, he started Anushun Traders (Anusuya is
the name of Ramesh’s mother) and opened 7 more branches
between 1967 and 1973. Shri Shanmugam then used to sell
cement at Rs.6 per bag!
From 1973 to 1986, Ramco Cement was not available in Madras.
With the company commencing operations of the new plant with
the latest technology at Jayanthipuram, Ramesh started getting
back supplies of Ramco Cement. He recalls with pride how his
firm was the earliest to take up cement marketing instead of just
distribution or rationing. He is ably assisted by his wife S.Prema,
brother Palani alias Babu, and a team of dedicated and loyal
people in his efforts.
Hard work and strong family business foundation have enabled
the group lead by Ramesh and his uncle to grow in size and stature
and eventually diversify into unchartered territories and
businesses including School Education, Land Banking, Steel,
Finance, Civil Construction, etc..
The group today boasts of an annual turnover of over Rs.600
crores and Ramesh’s vision is to “take Coal to New Castle” by
establishing an Institute for Higher Education in New Jersey, USA,
by 2022-23.

Health Tips
Benefits of Copper Vessel
Dr. Vishnu Mohan J – Medical Officer, Alathiyur Unit.
In this modern world where we have UV filters and
RO purifiers to purify water, the concept of drinking
water stored in a copper vessel might sound oldfashioned. However, this age-old practice referenced
in ancient texts of Ayurveda is now supported by
several scientific studies.Storing water in a copper
vessel creates a natural purification process. It can kill
all the microorganisms (molds, fungi, algae and
bacteria) present in the water that could be harmful
to the body and make the water perfectly fit for
drinking. In addition, water stored in a copper vessel,
preferably overnight or at least for four hours,
acquires a certain quality from the copper. Copper is
an essential trace mineral that is vital to human
health. It has antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticarcinogenic and anti-inflammatory properties. It also
helps neutralize toxins. Drinking 2 to 3 glasses of
water that has been stored in a copper vessel is
another easy way to supply your body with enough
copper. According to Ayurveda, drinking copperenriched water first thing in the morning on an empty
stomach helps balance all three doshas (Kapha, Vata
and Pitta). This also ensures proper functioning of
different organs and several metabolic processes.
5. Promotes Healthy Skin
1. Prevents Water-Borne Diseases
 Do not use a coarse scrub to wash the inside of
the vessel. It might scrape away copper from the
vessel.
2. Keeps the Digestive System Healthy
3. Aids Weight Loss
28 Ramco Bhandham
4. Boosts Heart Health
6. Beats Anemia
7. Slows Down Aging
8. Stimulates Your Brain
9.Fights Inflammation
10. Regulates Thyroid Gland
Additional Tips
 Pour 2 to 3 glasses of water into the copper vessel,
cover and leave it overnight or for at least 6 to 7
hours at room temperature. Then, drink this water
throughout the day.
 Do not refrigerate the water and avoid drinking it
in excess. Just 3 glasses of this water is enough to
reap the health benefits. Though rare, excess
copper may lead to copper toxicity.
 Over time, the copper vessel oxidizes, so you need
to clean it from time to time. To clean the vessel,
use lime or lemon juice or a small piece of
tamarind as a cleanser. The acidic property of
lemon and tamarind will make the vessel
completely clean.
