VOCATIONAL
EDUCATION AND
TRAINING (VET/TAFE)
Vocational Education and Training
(VET) is a great way to get a head
start in the career you want to
pursue. VET provides a stepping
stone into the workplace or a
pathway to further study. It caters
to a range of skill and knowledge
bases, from certificate to advanced
diploma qualifications and, because
of this, VET can help you start a new
career, assist you in learning new
skills or improve your skills in your
current industry.
ONLINE, FLEXIBLE AND
EXTERNAL TRAINING
South Metropolitan TAFE offers a
variety of online and flexible study
options. Study can be conducted
completely online and off-campus, or
a mixture of off and on-campus. The
benefit of online study is the ability to
study whenever is most convenient
for you – your time, your place,
your pace.
South Metropolitan TAFE is the
largest provider of apprenticeship
training in Western Australia. We
deliver apprenticeship training across
a huge range of industries.
Apprenticeships and traineeships
provide you with paid work while
you learn all aspects of a trade
or industry. They involve planned
learning over a period agreed by
you, your employer and South
Metropolitan TAFE. A large number
of apprenticeships and traineeships
are also available to part-time
workers.
To find out more about an
apprenticeship, contact an Australian
Apprenticeship Support Network
Provider on 13 38 73 or call South
Metropolitan TAFE on 1800 001 001.
South Metropolitan TAFE is one of the
largest providers of VET in Schools
(VETiS) programs in Western Australia
and works collaboratively with
government and non-government
secondary schools to develop a
broad range of programs suitable
for students in Years 10, 11 and
12. VETiS programs enable school
students to gain knowledge and skills
relevant to industry and employment
while studying towards their
secondary graduation. On successful
completion of their VETiS program
and secondary studies, students
receive their WA Certificate of
Education (WACE) as well as units of
competency or an entire qualification
from a nationally recognised Industry
Training Package.
South Metropolitan TAFE offers
VETiS programs in partnership with
schools and through school based
traineeships and school based
apprenticeships. Parents interested in
VETiS pathways should discuss their

YOUR CHOICE
The selection criteria model
gives points for:
1. Qualification pathways
2. Work experience/employment
3. Secondary education/skill
development
Note:
TAFE Admissions entry processes
are subject to change in 2017.
Students can access the latest and
most detailed Information, including

and addressing selection criteria,
on the Training WA website (www.

GENERAL
INFORMATION FOR
STUDENTS
COURSE GUIDE 2017
ENTRANCE
REQUIREMENTS
8
Each qualification (other than access
and bridging courses) has a set of
entrance requirements, which are
designed to ensure all those who
gain entry to a course have the
competencies or skills and abilities
required to effectively participate in
the program.
SOU T H M ET R OPOLIT AN T AF E
Entrance requirements differ based
on the complexity of a qualification
and are currently expressed
as generic competencies OR a
prerequisite competency-based
qualification (i.e. a lower level
qualification, such as requiring
completion of a certificate III before
applying for a certificate IV course).
The generic competencies are
communication skills (reading,
writing, speaking and listening)
and maths skills. Some courses
will only require competency in
communication skills; other courses
will require competency in both
communication and maths skills.
(Many courses will have no maths
skills requirement).
SELECTION CRITERIA
Each course has a limited number of
places. Selection criteria are used to
rank eligible applicants when there
are more applicants than places
available in a course. For the majority
of courses, applicants need only to
provide documentary evidence that
they meet the entrance requirements.
However, some of the more popular
(competitive) courses will require
applicants to address selection
criteria.
UNIQUE STUDENT
IDENTIFIER (USI)
ALL students undertaking nationally
recognised Vocational Education and
Training (VET) will need to have a
Unique Student Identifier (USI). This
is a number unique to each student
and will be used to collect and
access all their training records in the
one place. Students will be required
to provide their USI when enrolling
at South Metropolitan TAFE. Further
information on USI’s including how to
apply, visit www.usi.gov.au or one of
our Customer Service Centres.
DUTY OF CARE –
MINORS
The school leaving age is 17
years. This means that all young
people must be either in training or
employed in their 16th or 17th year.
If you choose to study at South
Metropolitan TAFE it is policy that
the college will record attendance in
every class and the duty of care team
has a responsibility to notify your
parent/guardian of any absences. If
this is not an option for you then you
will need to talk to the duty of care
coordinator at South Metropolitan
TAFE about whether or not you may
be eligible to apply for independent
minor status.
CAREER
PLANNING
South Metropolitan TAFE provides a free
service to ensure prospective and current
students receive the best opportunities
for success in the workplace and in their
future careers.
We can assist with career planning,
career pathways and course selection
and will provide advice on: university
pathways, retraining, applications,
entrance requirements and selection
processes, recognition of prior learning,
apprenticeships and traineeships,
industry skills shortage needs and
changing or withdrawing from a course.
We are also able to assist current
students with job search techniques,
resumes and employment related queries.

Learning at school, TAFE or university
isn’t the only way people gain skills
and knowledge. Many highly-skilled
people have gained and developed
their skills through different
pathways such as paid employment,
community work, volunteering and
taking part in informal training.
Do you already have some of the
skills and knowledge related to the
course you’re interested in? If so, you
may be a candidate for a Recognition
of Prior Learning (RPL) assessment.
The RPL process involves a preassessment interview to see if you
have skills and knowledge relevant
to current industry standards. You
will then be given the opportunity to
work with an RPL assessor to identify
what evidence you have, or can
demonstrate, and whether it meets
the industry standards.
You might find you have all the
skills for a qualification, or the
assessor might recommend some
further training to help you gain
a qualification. Please note fees
apply for both the pre-assessment
interview and RPL assessments.

call us on 1800 001 001.

SOUTH METROPOLITAN
TAFE REALISES THAT
HELPING YOUR CHILD
DECIDE WHICH OPTION
TO TAKE WHEN IT
COMES TO FURTHER
EDUCATION CAN BE
DAUNTING.
Where to start?
Students are more likely to choose
a career which suits them if they
understand their own likes and
dislikes. As a parent, you can help
your child develop self-awareness
by discussing these simple ideas
with them.
Remember, skills they use at school,
at work, at home, in the community
and on the sporting field are all
relevant.
Most tertiary education courses will
require a pass mark in English or its
equivalent. Many will also require a
pass in maths, South Metropolitan TAFE
recommends that English and math
based courses be completed by those
students hoping to continue into
further education.
Encourage your child to keep their
options open when selecting their
subjects for further study and remind
them to take their time.
Practical steps for parents
Below are some steps you can take to
help your child succeed in the changing
world of education, work and training.
• Talk to school staff about their
performance, strengths and abilities
• Ensure there is a balance between
study, work, rest and play
• Provide time and space for homework
• Set tasks around the home to
encourage responsible work habits
• Encourage participation in voluntary,
casual or part-time work so skills and
work practices can be learned
• Encourage your child to keep their
options open; the wider the range for
consideration, the more likely they are
to find one that works for them
• Interview friends, family or neighbours
in occupations of interest
• Go to career expos and open days.
15
SOU T H M ET R OPOLIT AN T AF E
• Ask your child what they have
and have not enjoyed learning,
and why
• Support your child when they
want to try new things and
expand their horizons
• Pursue new interests together
to reinforce the importance of
learning at all ages
• Help your child get to know what
they are good at
• Help your child to investigate jobs
that relate to their interests.
