WELCOME
Our 10th birthday celebrations culminate on
Saturday 17th September in a free screening of
Grease on Saffron Walden Common. Do join us
as we say thank you to our community for sharing
our love of cinema over the last ten years.
Actor Jo Hartley has been very supportive of Saffron
Screen and we are delighted to invite her back on
Friday 30th September for a Q&A after our screening
of David Brent: Life on the Road. We are also
working with Support 4 Sight for a fundraising
screening of the immersive and fascinating Notes
on Blindness, as well as welcoming local director
Heather Millard to a screening of the documentary
Yarn about the joyous uses of wool in art and craft.
We are looking forward to a number of topclass blockbusters, with Ghostbusters, Star Trek
Beyond, Jason Bourne, David Brent and Bridget
Jones’s Baby, as well as a great selection of
films for youngsters of all ages, including Finding
Dory, Pete’s Dragon, Swallows and Amazons
and Asterix & Obelix. For those who love the
Special Events, the autumn season from the
Royal Opera House, RSC and National Theatre
is looking strong, and there is a fabulous array
of foreign language films on Monday nights.
See you at the cinema, at a Pop-up event
or on the Common!

GHOSTBUSTERS (12A)
Fri 2nd & Sat 3rd 8pm Sun 4th & Sun 18th 5pm
DIRECTOR Paul Feig
CAST Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones
SCREEN TEST Feig teams up with his Bridesmaids stars in this highly entertaining
reboot of the ghostbusting franchise. The special effects department goes into overdrive as
Manhattan suffers a ghostly invasion. A team of three scientists (and one subway worker)
answer the call and radiate their own nuclear-powered, Amazonian brand of good humour.
(2016 USA 116 mins)
STAR TREK BEYOND (12A)
Sat 3rd 3pm Sun 4th 8pm Sun 11th 5pm Fri 7th Oct 8pm
DIRECTOR Justin Lin
CAST Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg
SCREEN TEST Captain Kirk must reunite the Enterprise crew, stranded across a hostile
planet with no means of communication, in order to face a new alien threat (in the form of
Idris Elba). An exciting and thoroughly enjoyable sequel that celebrates 50 years of Star Trek
with a dizzying carnival of wisecracks, fisticuffs, explosions, chases and truly eye-popping
effects. Who could ask for more?

when his latest acorn-hoarding escapade – this time in outer space! – sets off a chain of
world-ending cosmic events. Back on Earth Sid, Manny, Diego and friends must find a way
to survive the end of the Ice Age. With gorgeous new location designs and a huge cast of
returning and new creatures, there’s more than enough to keep young fans entertained.

DIRECTOR Paul Greengrass
CAST Matt Damon, Alicia Vikander, Tommy Lee Jones, Riz Ahmed
SCREEN TEST Years ago, CIA-trained killer Jason Bourne dismantled the Treadstone
programme and brought those in charge to justice, before disappearing. Now he’s back,
memory intact and none too pleased with his treatment – especially when he discovers a
hitman has been hired to eliminate him. Damon returns to his most iconic role in this latest
instalment of the action thriller series with plenty of white-knuckle excitement and deathdefying stunts.

VOICES Ellen DeGeneres, Albert Brooks, Ty Burrell, Diane Keaton
SCREEN TEST In this much-anticipated follow-up to Finding Nemo, sweet but forgetful
blue tang fish Dory goes in search of the family she was separated from as a child. All
the old characters are back as well as some great new aquatic friends including a grumpy
octopus and a beluga whale. Visually dazzling, exciting and very funny, this is sure to
enthral all Pixar fans, young and old.

MEN & CHICKEN (Mænd & høns) (15)
Mon 12th 8pm
DIRECTOR Anders Thomas Jensen
CAST Mads Mikkelsen, David Dencik, Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Søren Malling
SCREEN TEST Elias (Mikkelsen, shedding his usual debonair charm) and his brother
Gabriel go in search of their biological father, travelling to the remote and unusual Island of
Ork, where they are invited to take part in various bawdy, extreme activities. This is absurdist
black comedy at its darkest, yet writer/director Jensen uses it to explore the concepts of
identity, belonging and love. Hilariously outrageous. (2015 Den/Ger 102 mins Subtitled)
THE CARER (15)
Fri 16th & Sat 17th 8pm
DIRECTOR Gianfranco Rosi
SCREEN TEST Winner of the Golden Bear for Documentary at Berlin, Rosi’s timely new
film is set on the Sicilian island of Lampedusa, a first landfall for thousands of migrants
arriving from Africa and the Middle East. During a year-long stay, Rosi witnesses several
search and rescue operations for the boatloads of fleeing refugees, whilst at the same time
documenting the lives of the islanders themselves and, in particular, 12-year-old Samuele.
With an emphasis on quiet observation, this film gives an astonishing insight into the deeply
human tragedy of the refugee crisis.
(2016 It/Fr 114 mins Subtitled)
DIRECTOR János Edelényi
CAST Brian Cox, Anna Chancellor, Emilia Fox, Coco König
SCREEN TEST In this warm-hearted comedy drama, an ageing Shakespearean actor
struggles with his physical deterioration while his mental faculties remain as sharp as ever.
After he has alienated previous caregivers, his daughter forces a new companion on him,
a Hungarian refugee who has acting aspirations of her own. The relationship between the
central characters is beautifully realised and Cox delivers a magnificent performance as the
frustrated and gloriously grumpy thespian.

BORN TO BE BLUE (15)
Sun 18th 8pm
DIRECTOR Robert Budreau
CAST Ethan Hawke, Carmen Ejogo, Callum Rennie, Janet-Laine Green
SCREEN TEST Hawke gives a memorable performance as legendary trumpeter Chet
Baker, ‘the James Dean of jazz’. Budreau reimagines a key moment in Baker’s life in the
1960s as the musician attempts a comeback, spurred on by a passionate romance with
a new flame (Ejogo). Blending fact with fiction, this free-flowing biopic unfolds with the
stylistic brio of great jazz.

NOTES ON BLINDNESS (U)
Mon 19th 8pm
DIRECTOR Pete Middleton, James Spinney
SCREEN TEST After losing his sight in 1983, John Hull knew that if he did not try to
understand his blindness it would destroy him. He started keeping audio diaries to record
his observations on his new perspective on sensory experience. In this elegant and deeply
affecting documentary, his original recordings are combined with compelling cinematic reenactments and textured sound design to tell a story of loss, rebirth and transformation. An
extraordinary and evocative examination of one man’s journey into ‘a world beyond sight’.

CAST Bryce Dallas Howard, Karl Urban, Robert Redford, Oakes Fegley
SCREEN TEST Mr Meacham (Redford) delights local children with his tales of the fierce
dragon that resides deep in the woods. To his forest ranger daughter Grace, these stories are
little more than tall tales until she meets Pete, a mysterious 10-year-old who claims to live
in the woods with a giant green dragon named Elliott ... Grace sets out to determine the
truth in this thrilling family adventure.

Danish academic Georgette (Moore). But things still don’t go to plan and Maggie forms a

hilariously painful humour.

joyful nostalgic kids’ adventure. It is set over an idyllic summer holiday and the four Walker

DIRECTOR George Amponsah
SCREEN TEST On 4 August 2011 the Metropolitan Police carried out a ‘hard stop’
– halting a vehicle travelling at speed – and minutes later 29-year-old Mark Duggan
was shot by an armed police officer. This incident ignited a series of events that led to
the most incendiary riots in recent memory. Amponsah’s fascinating and humanising
documentary follows two of Duggan’s childhood friends, exploring a section of society largely
unrepresented by the mainstream media, capturing their history, alienation and attempts to
build a future. A timely and vital investigation beyond the headlines. (2015 UK 85 mins)

where she meets Carole, a feminist teacher. A relationship blossoms – a political awakening
for Delphine and a sexual awakening for Carole. However, following a family illness the pair
find themselves back on Delphine’s parents’ farm, facing the question of how best to reveal
their love to her family. A sensitive and moving story of love set against a background of
tumultuous social change.

where Romans will settle and conquer the villagers with their more ‘civilised’ ways. Enter
Asterix and Obelix who, armed with magic acorns and potions, begin to thwart Caesar’s

Allan Pascal (Dornan), who specialises in child psychology. Determined to uncover the truth of
Louis’ bizarre existence, Pascal is drawn into both the child’s life and that of his fragile mother

artists – working in Iceland, Poland, Japan, Sweden, Canada and Cuba – are a delightful

cooking, virility and assembling a flat-pack bookcase! Their petty competitiveness brings
deep-seated insecurities to the fore as the challenges become increasingly absurd. Winner of

SCREEN TEST Almodóvar has adapted three inter-related short stories by Alice Munro
into an intriguing and reflective film that centres on middle-aged teacher Julieta confronting
estrangement from her adult daughter. An eloquent and richly resonant film in which the director
returns to his great subject, the emotional terrain and interior lives of women. A satisfying
female-focused drama about yearning, memory and loss delivered in classic Almodóvar style
with an intoxicating palette of colour and textures.

THE BEATLES: EIGHT DAYS A WEEK –
THE TOURING YEARS (cert tbc)
Sun 23rd 8pm
DIRECTOR Ron Howard
SCREEN TEST Featuring rare and exclusive footage, this documentary is based on
the first part of The Beatles’ career, from the Cavern Club in 1962 to their last concert at
Candlestick Park in San Francisco in 1966 – the period in which they toured and achieved
international recognition. Howard’s film explores the inner workings of the band – how they
made decisions, created their music, built their collective career and became an extraordinary
worldwide phenomenon.

THE CHILDHOOD OF A LEADER (12A)
Mon 24th 8pm
DIRECTOR Brady Corbet
CAST Liam Cunningham, Bérénice Bejo, Robert Pattinson, Tom Sweet
SCREEN TEST Set in France in the aftermath of the Great War, the film follows a young
angelic-looking delinquent and the futile attempts to discipline him of his constantly
distracted parents – his American diplomat father, forever away working on the Treaty of
Versailles, and his melancholic, isolated mother. All the while, the unsettling possibility of
a further fall for Europe and the resultant rise of fascism looms ominously over the film.
An immensely atmospheric film, enigmatic and evocative and powered by a magnificent
orchestral score by Scott Walker.

HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE (12A)
Tues 25th 8pm Weds 26th 3pm & 8pm
DIRECTOR Matt Ross
CAST Viggo Mortensen, George MacKay, Samantha Isler, Annalise Basso
SCREEN TEST Having raised his six children off-grid in the Pacific Northwest wilderness
for a decade, an idealistic father (a charismatic performance from Mortensen) is forced to
re-engage with the modern world when tragedy strikes. Their unusual upbringing has left
the children unprepared for the world they encounter. A delightful mix of offbeat comedy
and poignant drama, reminiscent of Little Miss Sunshine in its study of a supposedly
dysfunctional family finding its way.
(2016 USA 118 mins)
DIRECTOR Taika Waititi
CAST Sam Neill, Julian Dennison, Rima Te Wiata, Rachel House
SCREEN TEST A brilliant and funny odd-couple road-trip story which won the audience
award at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. Rap-loving troublesome teen Ricky
and gnarly, gruff loner Hec (Dennison and Neill are both wonderful) end up being chased
by police deep into the New Zealand bush. Forced to bury their differences and work
together to survive, the duo form a firm bond. A compassionate, engaging and often laughout-loud comedy.

with a seemingly ordinary grey tabby but then – crash, bang – he is transformed into the
said cat by the mysterious store owner (Walken), who informs him that he has a week to
learn to be a good dad or live out the rest of his days as the cute, furry and increasingly
furious feline, Mr Fuzzypants. Plenty of laughs as Spacey struggles to cope.

Saffron Walden, Essex, CB11 4JF
DIRECTOR Jack Clayton
CAST Deborah Kerr, Michael Redgrave, Martin Stephens, Pamela Franklin
SCREEN TEST A chilling, effectively understated adaptation of Henry James’s The Turn
of the Screw, in which a prim, possibly repressed Victorian governess (Kerr on peak form)
arrives at a bleak mansion to take care of two young seemingly angelic children. But she
starts to suspect her young wards are somehow possessed by the spirits of the dead. With
atmospheric camerawork, this is an eerie and spine-chilling film – the near-perfect ghost
story for Halloween.
