Rescue D.O.G. ...
Something to talk about!
With over 1,000 rescues they never looked back
By Kary Sanders
When the local Humane Society in Butler, Tennessee
suddenly closed down this year the residents were
left with no other option than animal control. With an
85% euthanasia rate these large numbers could break
any animal lover’s heart. Yet someone decided to do
something about it.
Melissa Gentry started Rescue D.O.G., animal rescue
in Mountain City. With her family by her side, Melissa
never looked back. "Mom and I both work every day at the
antique store in town and half the inventory in there is ours.
All the money we make goes directly into the rescue fund,
so we literally work for dogs and both live off of dad! I'd
spend my last penny on these dogs!" Melissa’s father is a
pastor at the local church and is very supportive of the
hard work his wife and daughter put into rescuing animals.
Without them, there would not be a second chance for
animals in the area.
When asked why she rescues dogs, Melissa replies,
”Some of the abuse we have seen has been horrific. It
breaks your heart to see it and makes you almost want to
stop because it emotionally drains you. This happens most
to my mom because she is so tender-hearted, but then she
sees another little one that needs help and that is why we
just can't ever quit, not till we know we have saved all we
possibly can. It all started with saving one life.”
Her hard work and dedication has paid off with over a
thousand rescues so far. Melissa not only saves animals in
Nancy, Melissa and Preacher Bud Gentry .
her own hometown but helps with fostering and
transports for Partners Canines out of Boone, NC. She is a
strong asset to both her community and the High
Country.
Donations can be made to Rescue Dog at Mountain
City Antiques, Janie’s Video, and Taylor Animal Clinic. All
proceeds to sales in booth #803 at the antique store go to
helping Melissa and her mother save more animals.
Donations can also be made via Paypal on their Petfinder
page. To believe in a new tomorrow for so many worthy
animals makes Melissa not only a hero but someone to be
talked about!
Melissa Gentry is a local animal lover and director of Rescue Dog
Animal Rescue, in Mountain City, Tennessee. Thank you for your help with
local shelter animals as well as your volunteer work for High Country
transports.

PETE is a gorgeous 3-year old male American Bulldog. He is
very social and enjoys the company of other dogs. Pete has a pure
white body, with the exception of his black eye! He has been in
foster care for several years and hopes he can find a home of his
own. He is a high energy dog and loves to play hard. He has also
had training as a search/narcotics dog with one of our local rescue
squad officers. He is neutered and UTD on shots and would do
great in a active home where he can continue his training.

2012 Euthansia Statistics Released … Don’t Shop, Adopt a shelter pet!
Statistics are from the 2012 FY Public Animal Shelter Report
http://www.ncagr.gov/vet/aws/Fix/index.htm NCDA&CS Veterinary Division of Animal Welfare
The 2012 NC Animal Shelter Euthanasia Statistics are
better for High Country shelters compared to 2011 statistics
(some shelters were at 93%+ in 2011), but some regions still
have very high euthanasia rates at shelters because of the
high number of incoming animals. Many times the lack of
space in animal shelters (and available cages/dog runs) is a
huge reason they have to euthanize so many. Shelters are
not required to hold owner surrender animals, puppies under
8 weeks old, or injured animals. Any animal picked up as
a stray is held for 3 days then put up for adoption or
euthanized depending on space available and if its deemed
an adoptable pet. Animals surrendered voluntarily do not
have any type of required holding period and may be euthanized on intake if no space is available in the shelter.
*Note: any shelter whether "no kill" status or not has to
euthanize animals. Shelters have to euthanize animals
that aren't adoptable, aggressive or feral. They also provide
humane euthanasia for local citizens that cannot afford their
vet bill to have a senior or injured pet put to sleep. "No Kill"
shelters do not euthanize adoptable animals but still have to
put animals to sleep for the reasons listed.
The good news is many shelters are contacting rescue
groups to receive help. All shelters struggle with space
issues and cannot hold dogs or cats longer than a few days
in many areas. Please consider adopting from an animal
shelter to save a life and encourage community members
and family to be responsible owners and to spay/neuter their
pets to reduce overpopulation issues. Contact us at [email protected] or (828) 773-9112 to find out
ways you can volunteer in your area to improve the lives of
cats and dogs that end up in shelters. Also make sure all
personal pets have an id tag or microchip in case they are
ever lost and end up in a animal shelter. 90% of lost animals
are never reclaimed because they do not have an ID tag.
