BOB’S TWO BITS
President’s message
The new calendar year is speeding by! Our club
has already had two board meetings and two
official club functions. Can you name them? If you
can, I say you are staying involved. If not, you are
missing out on a lot of fun. Most recently we had a
function entitled “The Amazing Race”. It was
masterfully coordinated by Dave Natali and Nancy
Robins. What a blast!! Although the number of
members who participated was limited, smiles and
laughs abounded for those who did. You can read
all the details about it in the accompanying pages
of this newsletter. The other recently completed
function was the installation of club officers’ dinner,
which was held at the Claim Jumper Restaurant in
Huntington Beach. That event was highlighted in
the clubs February newsletter and was another fun
get together! Since we don’t want you to feel left
out, at our recent Board of Directors’ meeting we
have been finalizing some new club events. I want
to bring to your attention our next upcoming “don’t
miss” opportunity. We will be having a club dinner
on March 10th at Citrus Café (Redhill and Edinger
Roads) in Tustin. The dinner will begin at 5:00 p.m.
Lynne Rupp has made the arrangements and we
should be able to order off the restaurant’s regular
(delicious) menu. Also, please feel free to drive
your classic cars, as we will be providing a car
guard to assure our Thunderbirds are safe and

sound. Now, turn the pages of this newsletter to
the calendar section (page 10). Check out the
fantastic events lurking on the horizon. WOW…
“Fun, fun, fun and daddy isn’t going to take our
Tbird away”! There is something for everyone. So,
mark your calendars and set a personal goal for
yourself to get involved the year. You will be happy
you did!!
Thanks for reading this edition or YOUR “BirdsEye-View Newsletter” and let’s make this year a
fabulous one for our “Thunderbird Circle” car and
social club.

Editorial
A New Year normally means new resolutions and sometimes new
changelings and even new things. This year will be nothing different than in
the past. I have made my New Year’s resolutions and have already broken
them. But your club has not. We told you we wanted you to see your club in
a different light. So your officers have put together what we consider some
very good outings and meetings for the coming year.
All you have to do is go to page 10 to see what we have proposed for our
outing and enjoyment. Some of the dates are still open, but we will be filling
in the blanks later on and with your help we may even add a few. We
always include items of interest for you, so if you choose to partake of them
you can.
Additionally, we have revamped our website. Our new webmaster has
completely re-did its look and added a little pizazz. If you go to the website
and click on the “Recent Tours” you will be taken to a new page that has a
list at the top of our past tours and outing. The most current or the last one
will be in the middle of the page. Make sure your speakers are on and the
volume is turned up, then click on it, sit back and enjoy the show.
So just go to www.thunderbirdcircle.com

by Chris Pond
In the January newsletter I gave a little introduction
about how I came to own my project ’57 Tbird but
the story has just begun…
Our
Tbird
found itself
making
its
first trip to
the
West
Coast
in
August, just
about
the
time that I
finished my
MBA
from
Pepperdine. I was wondering what I would do with
all the free time now that my nights and weekends
were not going to be spent in class or group
meetings. Before I could get bored the Tbird arrived
at my doorstep thanks to an enclosed car hauler. In
fact, our ’57 got to make the trip out West with a
1930’s Mercedes that Jay Leno had just purchased.
We thought it was fine company indeed for the old
“Personal Car”. It wasn’t too long before I started to
dive in and see what I was faced with to get our Bird
back on the road.
For two reasons I started the restoration work with
repairing the floors.
The first reason
was because it
would afford me
some good practice
using the welder on
areas that wouldn’t
be seen. The other
reason
was
because I wanted to
make sure the body
was
properly
secured
to
the
frame before I got it
running and driving because I knew I would want to
drive it (of course). I think the car was parked on an
incline because the passenger side rocker panel
and floors were as holey as Swiss cheese but the
driver side was mostly solid. It appears the floor
braces started to trap water and rusted the inner
rocker panel, floor braces, and floor boards directly
above the braces. The good news was the rust was
only on the flat portions of the floor so I could avoid
a full floor pan patch and make my own out of
some 18 gauge sheet metal.
It was quite a sight to have a work light under the
car and not be able to see the light shine through
the floor. I guess I like to find pleasure in the small
things! Once the floors were all in place I moved on
to cutting out the
old floor braces and
welding in some
new
ones
I
purchased
from
Larry’s Thunderbird.
They were a single
piece design but
needed
a
little
attention with the
hammer and dolly
before installation.
With the inner rocker out of the car the floor braces
slid
into
place with
relative
ease.
I
drilled
some ¼”
holes so I
could
rosette
weld the
braces to
the
now
repaired
floor pans. It was quite a treat to get in the car with
the new braces installed and the body bolted to the
frame. The floor didn’t budge when I sat and stood
on it so I guess I did a pretty good job! Again,
pleasure in small things I suppose. Keep up with
the latest progress at:

(aka Mystery Tour)
Some members were quicker than others to
figure out the answer (The Atlantic Charter) and
when they answered it correctly, they got their
next clue.
by David Natali
It was a cool and crisp Saturday morning when
the members descended upon Carl’s Jr. in
Tustin to begin the Amazing Race.
What a sight to see the little birds in the parking
lot awaiting the start of the race. At 9:15 the
racers opened their first clue and were “off and
running” to the Great Park in Irvine. There they
encountered Nancy Robins and their first
detour, needing to
answer
the
question,
“what
happened
on
August 14, 1941?”
The Great Park
has a walkway
which has an
historical timeline
noting many important milestones in our history.
Their next destination was Fashion Island in
Newport Beach with the assignment to find the
wind chime mural, created in 1967. Now the
techies in the race
quickly goggled the
artwork to discover it
was near Robinsons
Department
Store.
One
problem,
Robinsons
left
Fashion Island years
ago, so unless they
remembered where it
one was, they were
left to their own
hunting skills to find
the mural.
With
Stephanie
Williamson
and
Glenn
Still
dispensing the clues,
the racers managed to find them.
Once they found it, their next clue had them
taking the Balboa Ferry from Balboa Island to
Balboa Peninsula.

would find our club President Bob Gaebel with a
detour and clue.
continued from page 5
Now if you have to
ask what is with the
red tape between
the cars is for, it is
obvious you were
not there.
Just
suffice to say,
DON’T ASK.
Now that they were on Balboa Peninsula, they
had to find Mr. Balboa’s Barbershop.
Mr. Balboa is the late Wayne Moses, one of our
long standing members in the club. Many of the
members used to get their haircut there and the
barbershop is still run by Wayne’s wife Linda
and her companion Tony. Our club Secretary
Lynne Rupp was there to work the clue box.
With no time for a shave and a haircut, the
racers were now headed to Laguna Hills Mall to
find their next clue. Somewhere in the mall they
The detour had them finding Ruby’s Diner and
determining
the number of
airplanes
hanging from
the track in the
ceiling.
Once they had
that answer (8
airplanes), it was
on
to
Fuddruckers and
the finish line.
The order of
finish was Jon
Tabasim and his
son
Jordan,
Chris and Katie Pond, and Denny and Katie
Pike (all in the non-early bird category), then
followed by Ed and Irene Zaleski, Tom and
Joyce Peluso, and Ron Barnett. After a great
lunch at Fuddruckers, the gas card prizes were
given to John Tabasim and the Zaleski’s.

Once we had the formalities out of the way,
who came in first,
second etc., etc., we
than had a great lunch
at Fuddruckers. As
you can see in the
following pictures, we
all had a great time
discussing the trials
and tribulations of the
day’s race.
Our club will be doing what we do best; we are
going to have another wonderful dinner party.
This one was planned by our very own Lynne
Rupp. She has selected a fantastic location. This
dinner is at the Citrus Café, 1481 Tustin Ave.
Irvine. Citrus Café is a bustling neighbourhood
restaurant
in
the
commercial
district of Tustin at the corner of Redhill and
Edinger. Our planned start time is 5:00PM
We will have a room to ourselves and will be able
to order off the menu. The Citrus Cafe has great
choices of appetizers, burgers, sandwiches,
pizza, salads, pasta and entrées. Wine and beer
is also available for purchase.
A car guard will be provided, so bring your
Thunderbirds. There is plenty of parking.
R.S.V.P. by Wednesday, March 8th to Lynne
Rupp. For more information go to their website
at: www.citruscafe.com. For more information
contact Lynne at 714-572-9647 or email her at
[email protected].
Now is the time of year we all need to get ready
for that spring clean and what better way than to
start by gathering up all those old parts you don’t
need any longer and box them up. Rather than
giving them away, how about you bring them to
the next FORD swap meet. Yes you heard me
correctly; we will be participating in the great ALL
FORD parts swap meet.
May 12th, 7:00AM to 2:00PM
3855 E. La Palma Ave, Anaheim
So until next time
race fans! Enjoy
your Thunderbirds
and we will see you
at the next Great
Race or Mystery
Tour or whatever.
