Dear Happenings,
Thank you for your continued support of the Purple
Stride Event (June 2012) to raise funds for pancreatic

Dear Happenings,
Wow! Did you get it wrong on the location for #3;

Dear Readers,
July is National Picnic Month, and I couldn’t
be more pleased. Thirty-one days to create
special outdoor memories for breakfast,
lunch or dinner!
As a child in the ‘70s, family picnics to either
Nay Aug, Lackawanna or Gouldsboro Parks
were treasured days. My stay-at-home mother would spend all day making the macaroni,
potato and coleslaw salads so that when my
father got home from work we’d be all set to
go. Sometimes my father would cook the
hamburgers and hotdogs on a little hibachi
grill that we’d bring, or sometimes he’d use
the charcoal ones provided at the park. I
adored our picnic basket, red-checkered

tablecloth and the relaxation of enjoying my
favorite foods in such peaceful and beautiful
settings.
I never outgrew my love for picnics, and fortunately when my husband and I were dating I converted him into a fan as well. One
summer we spent every Friday afternoon
exploring a different park; we’d bring our
bicycles, rent a boat or hike the trails. Each
picnic had a different theme and would
often incorporate both lunch and dinner.
This year, we plan to celebrate National
Picnic Month to the fullest. We’re hoping to
instill the same love of picnicking in our
young daughter; she already enjoys setting
the picnic table with our “real” picnic dishes
and silverware (no plastic or paper please)
and picking the fresh flowers for the center
piece.
One of our favorite ways to enjoy a picnic
is at the Wildflower Music Festival, held
each Saturday from July 7 through
August 18 on the grounds of the
Dorflinger-Suydam Wildlife
Sanctuary. See page 84 for details
on the festival’s 30th anniversary
year.

Around
Lake
Wallenpaupack
T
he Lenape Indians
named the area on the
border of Pike and
Wayne Counties
"Wallenpaupack," which means
"the stream of swift and slow
water." Lake Wallenpaupack is a
reservoir created in 1926 by PPL,
the Pennsylvania Power & Light
Company, for hydroelectric purposes. To create the lake, land
was purchased from landowners,
and a dam was constructed on
Wallenpaupack Creek. Lake
Wallenpaupack is the third
largest man-made lake in the
state and a center of recreation
where many enjoy boating,
swimming, fishing, ice-skating
and ice fishing. The 52-mile
wooded shoreline allows visitors
the opportunity to hike and view
wildlife. Fishermen enjoy the
wide variety of fish life in the
lake.
