NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (13-2) AT CAROLINA PANTHERS (7-8)
THIS
WEEK’S GAME
The Carolina Panthers close out their season at Bank of America
Stadium Sunday pitted against the NFL’s highest scoring team in the
New Orleans Saints after a scoringfest of their own against the New
York Giants last week. Carolina upended the Giants 41-9, eclipsing the
40-point mark for the first time since the final game of the 2005 regular
season.
The Saints have scored over 40 points four times this season,
providing the Carolina defense with yet another challenge after holding
both Minnesota and New York to a touchdown the last two weeks.
The Panthers are 13th in overall defense, showing steady
improvement throughout the season despite starting 14 different lineups
in the first 14 week of the season before starting the same unit back-toback in the last two games.
“We have finally been able to get some consistency on defense
and it has been reflected in our play,” says head coach John Fox.
The biggest change for the unit has come in takeaways where
the Panthers have recorded 17 in their last five games and 27 over the last
nine.
Familiar names once again played a role for Carolina against the Giants:
•
Julius Peppers recovered a fumble to go with a sack and four
tackles as he lifted his sack total to 10. 5 in reaching double digit sack
totals for the sixth time in eight seasons. His 81 sacks are a Panthers
team record and trail only Jason Taylor and Dwight Freeney in that
period.
•
Jon Beason had a team-high 13 tackles that included a sack and
a caused fumble to raise his season total to 156, leaving him only four
tackles shy of his team record set as a rookie in 2007.
•
Safety Chris Harris intercepted a pass to increase his season
total to three and his streak of creating a turnover to five straight games.
They were not alone as Charles Johnson and Tyler Brayton also
recorded sacks while Richard Marshall made his fourth interception of the
year to tie Chris Gamble for the team lead.
It was another strong performance by a defense that has allowed
just five touchdowns in the last five games, but could be facing its stiffest
test against the Saints, who are first in total yardage and points scored.
New Orleans will be the fourth straight top ten ranked offense the Panthers
have faced, following New England (2), Minnesota (9), and New York (6).
Continuity has also been a challenge on offense for the Panthers
who were already without quarterback Jake Delhomme as well as tackles
Jordan Gross and Jeff Otah and will now have to face the Saints without
wide receiver Steve Smith, who broke his arm against the Giants.
They also played last week without running back DeAngelo Williams,
but backfield mate Jonathan Stewart stepped up with a record setting
performance as he ran for a team record 206 yards and a touchdown on 28
carries. It was the first time a back had ever run for more than 200 yards
against New York in Giants Stadium, coming in the building’s finale.
With that effort, the Panthers are now the sixth team in the
League history to have a pair of 1,000 yard backs in the same backfield as
Williams has run 1,117 yards while Stewart has 1,008. Williams’ status
for the Saints game is up in the air, but unfortunately, that is not the case
for Smith.
His season is over after falling just short of a fifth consecutive
1,000-yard receiving season, leaving the Panthers deciding a new starter
opposite Muhsin Muhammad. Muhammad scored his first touchdown of
the season at New York and he and Smith are tied for the lead in career
touchdowns with 50 each.
Smith’s absence will also impact the options Matt Moore has at
quarterback, who will be making his eighth career start Sunday. In his last
two games, Moore has thrown for six touchdowns without an interception.
A positive for Carolina is that the Panthers will be starting the
same offensive line for the third week in a row after adjusting to the loss
of Gross and Otah at the tackles.
“There has been a lot of change, but the good news is that a
number of young players have stepped up and seized the opportunity,”
says Fox. “It is something we will have to do again.”

LAST MEETING
Superdome, November 8, 2009 - The New Orleans Saints
stopped the Panthers three times in the final three minutes
and scored on an Anthony Hargrove fumble recovery, late in
the fourth quarter dooming Carolina to a 30-20 loss. A game
that began with everything going in Carolina’s favor went
awry in the third quarter, when a pair of Saints touchdowns
were bracketed by a 19-play, 73-yard march that consumed
nine minutes and 47 seconds but yielded only a 25-yard
John Kasay field goal. Six plays later a 54-yard Drew Breesto-Robert Meachem touchdown created a 20-all deadlock
as the fourth quarter began. Carolina’s defense rebounded
in the final quarter, even after losing linebacker Thomas
Davis to a knee injury with 10:40 remaining. Carolina stifled
the Saints in the red zone with five minutes remaining, forcing end-zone incompletions on consecutive plays that led to
a 40-yard John Carney field goal and a 23-20 Saints lead.
One series later, the defense coaxed a three-and-out with
2:29 remaining, giving Carolina’s offense another chance.
But it could not capitalize. On their first possession with
a deficit, the Panthers used 11- and 19-yard passes from
Delhomme to Gary Barnidge and Tyrell Sutton to move into
New Orleans territory. But the drive stalled on consecutive
deep incompletions from the Saints 43, then died when
Delhomme was sacked by Will Smith on fourth-and-8.

HEAD COACHES
Panthers head coach john fox (70-57 regular season, 75-60
overall in Carolina) is in his eighth season with Carolina. Fox’s
75 victories since 2002 make him the winningest coach in franchise history. His career in Carolina is highlighted by a Super
Bowl appearance in 2003 and an NFC Championship appearance
in 2005. The four consecutive playoff road victories he notched
along the way tied the NFL record held by the Dallas Cowboys
under Tom Landry. Fox may be at his best, however, when faced
with adversity. In 2002, he took over a 1-15 squad and produced a
7-9 season, a six-game improvement in victories that marked the
second-best improvement by a rookie head coach in the NFL since
1978. In 2007, Fox led Carolina to seven wins, the most by a team
that started four different quarterbacks since 1988. Prior to coming
to Carolina, Fox spent five years as the New York Giants defensive
coordinator (1997-2001).
PAYTON
Saints head coach SEAN PAYTON (39-26 regular season, 40-27
overall) was named the 14th head coach in Saints history on
Jan. 18, 2006 and in his opening season led the Saints to the
NFC Championship Game for the first time in club history. A
unanimous choice for NFL coach of the year honors after also
guiding the team to a 10-6 record and the NFC south title following a dramatic roster overhaul. Considered one of the NFL’s
brightest offensive minds, the Saints have ranked among the
league’s most productive offenses each season since his arrival,
including finishing first in NFL in both 2008 and 2006 and ranking
fourth in 2007. He arrived in New Orleans following a three-year
stint with Dallas Cowboys, serving as the assistant coach/passing game coordinator in 2005 after spending his first two seasons
as assistant head coach/quarterbacks.

UNDRAFTED NOT UNWANTED
Carolina entered the preseason with 16 undrafted rookie free agents on the roster, but there was only one standing in the end –
offensive tackle Garry Williams from Kentucky. Williams was awarded a roster spot becoming only the third undrafted rookie to make the
team since head coach John Fox took the reins in 2002: That doesn’t mean undrafted rookies haven’t contributed. In 2004, Carolina had
five undrafted rookies appear in at least one contest, but Kemp Rasmussen (2002) and Quinton Teal (2007) and now Williams remain the
only undrafted rookies to make the final roster cutdown under Fox.

CAT SCRATCHES
FOR STARTERS
For the first time all season the Panthers did not have any
changes to their starting unit on defense. Carolina fielded the
same defensive starters after using 14 different starting lineups
in the first 14 games with 20 players making starts. This same
group of defenders also opened versus Tampa Bay (12/6/09)
in a base defense. Only four players - linebacker Jon Beason,
cornerback Chris Gamble, defensive tackle Damione Lewis,
and cornerback Richard Marshall - have started every game on
defense in 2009.
Offensively, Matt Moore started his fourth consecutive game
at quarterback for Jake Delhomme, who was placed on injured
reserve (12/24/09) with a broken finger on his right hand. Running
back Jonathan Stewart made his second start of the season in
place of DeAngelo Williams, who was inactive because of a
sprained ankle sustained versus Minnesota (12/20/09). Dante
Rosario started for the seventh time this year as Carolina began
in a two-tight end set..
KASAY KICKS MILESTONES
Kicker John Kasay Kicker John Kasay scored 11 points against
New York to move into ninth place all time in NFL history for
points scored with 1,720, bettering the 1,711 totaled by Nick
Lowery from 1978-1996. He connected on both of his field
attempts, converting from 38 and 28 yards, and all five of his
extra-point chances.
Kasay has been successful on 19-of-24 field-goal attempts and
29-of-30 extra-point opportunities for a team-leading 86 points
this season. In addition to ranking ninth in NFL history in scoring,
he stands seventh with 405 made field goals. He is the Panthers’
all-time leader with 1,379 points scored and 325 field goals..
LLOYD’S OF LONDON
Kickoff specialist Rhys Lloyd placed three of his eight kickoffs
in the end zone with two touchbacks, helping limit New York
to an average kickoff drive start of the 24-yard line. He has
reached the end zone on 41-of-67 kickoffs with 21 touchbacks
this season.
TOUGH SLATE
The 2009 Carolina Panthers Schedule featured eight games
against 2008 playoff teams. Philadelphia, Arizona, Miami, New
England, Minnesota, the New York Giants and Atlanta (twice)
all made the postseason a year ago. Using a formula based on
last season opponent winning percentage: the Carolina Panthers
2009 Schedule is ranked the second toughest in the NFL. Their
2009 opposition teams’ season record last year was 151-104-1
for a winning percentage of .592. The toughest schedule in the
NFL belongs to the Miami Dolphins, whose opposition winning
percentage was .594. The weakest schedule in the NFL belongs
to the Chicago Bears, whose opposition winning percentage was
.414.
THE MOORE THE MERRIER
Quarterback Matt Moore completed 15-of-20 passes for 171
yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions to produce
a 139.8 quarterback rating. He threw touchdown passes of 22
yards to wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad in the second quarter, two yards to tight end Jeff King in the fourth quarter and 27
yards to wide receiver Steve Smith in the fourth quarter.
Moore established career highs with a 75.0 completion percentage and 139.8 quarterback rating, bettering his previous
bests of a 70.4 completion percentage versus Seattle (12/16/07)
and 123.2 quarterback rating versus Minnesota (12/20/09). He
tied his career high of three touchdowns, previously achieved
versus Minnesota (12/20/09).
In six games with four starts this season, Moore has completed
71-of-115 passes for 891 yards and seven touchdowns with two
interceptions to produce a 98.9 quarterback rating.
In seven career starts, including the last three games of the
2007 season and Weeks 13-16 in 2009, Moore has posted a 5-2
record as a starter. Six of his seven starts have come against
teams with winning records with the exception being versus
Tampa Bay (12/6/09). In those seven starts, Moore has completed 114-of-182 passes for 1,392 yards and 10 touchdowns with
three interceptions to generate a 97.6 quarterback rating.

Carolina has 14 draft picks in the starting lineup, 15 if you count fullback Brad Hoover who was signed as an undrafted free agent,
and 33 total on the club. On offense quarterback Matt Moore and guard Keydrick Vincent weren’t drafted by the team, and defensively lineman Tyler Brayton, Hollis Thomas, Damione Lewis, linebacker Na’il Diggs and safety Chris Harris were not draft
picks.
MUHAMMAD CATCHES MILESTONE...
Wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad tied for the team lead with five catches for 39 yards to surpass 11,000 career receiving yards
in Week Five against the Washington Redskins. In his 14th NFL season, he ranks fifth among active wide receivers with 853 receptions
and 11,353 receiving yards and seventh with 62 receiving touchdowns. Muhammad ranks second on the club with 46 catches for 496
yards.
CLUB 100
Carolina has 12 players who have appeared in 100 or more contests in their career. John Kasay, Jason Baker, Jake Delhomme,
Brad Hoover, Na’il Diggs, Jordan Gross, Muhsin Muhammad, Steve Smith, Julius Peppers, Damione Lewis, Tyler Brayton,
Hollis Thomas.
GIVEAWAY/TAKEAWAY
Carolina forced four turnovers on interceptions by cornerback Richard Marshall and safety Chris Harris and fumble recoveries by linebacker James Anderson and defensive end Julius Peppers. The Panthers did not commit any turnovers to finish with
a plus-four turnover ratio. The four takeaways resulted in 10 points for Carolina. The Panthers have a plus-three turnover ratio this
season.
The Panthers, who began the game tied for fourth in the NFL in takeaways, have forced 34 turnovers on 21 interceptions and
13 fumbles this year. In the last nine games, Carolina has collected 27 takeaways and has a plus-17 turnover ratio after generating just
seven takeaways and having a negative-14 turnover ratio in the first six games.
Marshall picked off Giants quarterback Eli Manning in the second quarter when he stepped in front of a pass intended for
Giants wide receiver Steve Smith. Marshall is tied with cornerback Chris Gamble for the team lead with a career-high four interceptions this season.
Harris intercepted Manning in the fourth quarter on the Giants’ final possession to equal his career high of three interceptions,
previously achieved as a rookie with Chicago in 2005. It marked the fifth consecutive game that he created a turnover. Harris forced
a fumble at the New York Jets (11/29/09), recorded an interception versus Tampa Bay (12/6/09), caused a fumble at New England
(12/13/09), and recovered a fumble and picked off a pass versus Minnesota (12/20/09).
MOORE UNDER CENTER
Quarterback Matt Moore has started the last three contests for Carolina after dressing but not playing in 10 of the Panthers
first 11 games. Moore has compiled a 3-1 record as a starter, completing 61.7 percent of his passes (71-of-115) with seven touchdowns
and two interceptions. In seven career starts, including the last three games of the 2007 season and Weeks 13-16 in 2009, Moore has
compiled a 5-2 record as a starter. Five of his seven starts have come against teams that were leading their division at the time of the
game with the exception being versus Tampa Bay (12/6/09) and last week at New York. In his seven starts, Moore has completed 114of-182 passes for 1,392 yards and 10 touchdowns with three interceptions.

HOOOOOVER
Fullback Brad Hoover has played an instrumental blocking role in the Panthers rushing offense and is one of the key reasons
the unit is ranked third in the NFL. Hoover ranks among Panthers all-time leaders in games played with 151, eighth in games started
with 97 and yards rushing with 951. He ranks sixth all-time in receptions with 143. Hoover, who had only rushed four times for five yards
this season entering last week’s game in New York, carried nine times for 37 yards and one touchdown. It marked the most attempts
and yards he has had since having 24 carries and 99 yards versus San Diego (10/24/04). Hoover scored on a one-yard run in the fourth
quarter, his first rushing touchdown since a five-yarder versus Tampa Bay (11/13/06). He plowed his way to an 18-yard run in the third
quarter, the second-longest run of his career behind a 35-yard rumble versus Green Bay (11/27/00). Hoover joins Jonathan Stewart,
DeAngelo Williams and Fred Lane as the only rookies in franchise history to produce a 100-yard rushing game.
TIGHT ENDS MAKE CONTRIBUTION
The Carolina Panthers 2008 tight end trio of Jeff King, Dante Rosario and Gary Barnidge combined for a total 39 receptions in 2008.
Through 15 games in 2009 the trio has amassed 62 catches for 752 yards and five touchdowns. Starter Jeff King has been the model of
consistency starting 43 games over the past four seasons. King has collected 24 catches for 197 yards and three touchdowns in 2009.
Dante Rosario battled a knee injury earlier in the season, but leads the group with 26 receptions for 313 yards and two touchdowns. Of
his 50-career receptions, 34 (69.4 percent) have yielded a first down or touchdown. Gary Barnidge is averaging 20.2 yards per catch in
2009. He has posted 12 receptions for 242 yards with a long of 55 yards.

O-LINE IMPRESSIVE DESPITE ADVERSITY
Behind an offensive line featuring Travelle Wharton at left
tackle, Mackenzy Bernadeau at left guard, Ryan Kalil at center, Keydrick
Vincentat right guard and Geoff Schwartz at right tackle, the Panthers’
third-ranked rushing attack amassed 247 yards and two touchdowns on
46 attempts for an average of 5.4 yards per carry and gained 13 rushing
first downs against the New York Giants last week.
Carolina’s 247 yards rushing represented the fifth-most in
team history. The Panthers have compiled three of the five highest
single-game rushing totals in team history this season with 270 yards
at Arizona (11/1/09), 267 yards at Tampa Bay (10/18/09) and 247 yards
at the New York Giants (12/27/09). The team record for the most rushing yards in a game is 299 versus Tampa Bay (12/8/08).
The Panthers’ 46 rushing attempts marked the fourth most
in team history. Carolina has recorded two of the four highest singlegame totals for carries in team history this season with 48 at Tampa
Bay (10/18/09) and 46 at the New York Giants (12/27/09). The team
record for the most rushing attempts in a game is 52 at Atlanta
(12/24/06).
Carolina’s 13 rushing first downs equaled the third most in team history, previously accomplished four times - most recently at St. Louis
(9/9/07). The team record for the most rushing first downs in a game is
16 at Tampa Bay (10/18/09).
The Panthers are averaging 154.7 yards rushing per game and 4.8 yards
per rush this season, while gaining 2,320 rushing yards, scoring 17
rushing touchdowns and gaining 118 rushing first downs. The rushing
yards and rushing touchdowns rank as the second most in team history
behind the team records of 2,437 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2008,
and the rushing first downs match the most in team history - previously
accomplished in 2008.
noteworthy offensive line accomplishments in 2008
• Carolina finished the season third in the NFL in rushing offense with an average of
152.3 yards per game and second with an average of 4.8 yards per play.
Demonstrating Carolina’s depth
and flexibility along the offensive
line, here is how the Panthers
compared to the NFL average in
several statistical categories:
Rushing Yards Per Game

Sacks Allowed
31
• Helped set single-season team records with 2,437 rushing yards, an average of
4.84 rushing yards per attempt, 30 rushing touchdowns (first in the NFL) and 118
rushing first downs.
• Set a franchise record for fewest sacks allowed in a season with 20 and finished
eighth in the League in sacks per pass play with an average of 4.6 percent.
• Helped running back DeAngelo Williams eclipse the franchise single-season rushing mark with 1,515 yards and lead the NFL with 18 rushing touchdowns.
• Created running lanes for running back Jonathan Stewart to set a franchise record
for rushing yards and rushing touchdowns by a rookie with 836 and 10, respectively.
• Opened holes for Panthers running backs to produce a single-game franchise
record 299 rushing yards on Monday Night Football versus Tampa Bay (12/8),
eclipsing the previous mark of 264 rushing yards set less than a month earlier
versus Detroit (11/16).
• Helped Carolina rush for at least 100 yards in 14-of-16 games and for more than
200 yards in four games, totaling 299 yards on the ground versus Tampa Bay (12/8),
264 versus Detroit (11/16), 234 at New Orleans (12/28) and 205 versus Kansas City
(10/5). The Panthers compiled a record of 12-2 in games in which they rushed for
over 100 yards.
WILLIAMS AND STEWART = DOUBLE TROUBLE
DEANGELO WiLLIAMS BECOMES PANTHERS
ALL-TIME LEADING RUSHER (3,850) AND GOES OVER 1,000
Yards for the season
Running back Jonathan Stewart rushes into the record
books. Running back Jonathan Stewart set a team record
with 206 yards and one touchdown on 28 attempts against the
New York Giants, breaking the previous mark of 186 yards by
DeAngelo Williams versus
Tampa Bay (12/8/08). He
scored on a 29-yard scamper in the second quarter.
Stewart established singlegame highs for yards and
carries, surpassing his previous bests of 130 yards versus Detroit (11/16/08) and
26 attempts versus Tampa
Bay (12/6/09). He also produced a career-long 52-yard
run in the fourth quarter,
bettering his previous long
of 45 yards versus Atlanta
(11/15/09).
Stewart’s 206 rushing
yards represented the most
against the Giants in more
than 31 years since Terry
Miller with 206 for Buffalo
(11/26/78). He has produced
more than 100 yards rushing four times this season,
including in two consecutive
games and three of the last
four. Stewart also compiled
100-yard rushing efforts
with 110 yards and one
touchdown on 17 carries at
Tampa Bay (10/18/09), 120
yards and one touchdown on
26 attempts versus Tampa
Bay (12/6/09) and 109 yards
and one touchdown on 25
Williams and Stewart have combined for 2,125 yards and 16 TD’s
carries versus Minnesota
(12/20/09).
Running back DeAngelo Williams missed Sunday’s game
at New York with an ankle injury after rushing only six times
for 13 yards versus the Vikings (12/20). Williams eclipsed 1,000
yards rushing for the second
consecutive season by posting
a team-high 40 yards on 16 carries against the New York Jets
(11/29). He cracked the 1,000yard plateau in the first quarter
on a four-yard run. It marked the
fourth time in team history that
a player has surpassed 1,000
rushing yards in a season - previously achieved by Williams with
a team-record 1,515 yards in
2008, Stephen Davis with 1,444
in 2003 and Anthony Johnson
with 1,120 in 1996. Williams
leads the Panthers with 1,117
yards and seven touchdowns on
216 carries this season and is
third on the team with 29 receptions for 252 yards. Williams
ranks first in team history with
3,850 rushing yards, 30 rushing touchdowns and 15 games
with 100 or more rushing yards
and second with 754 rushing
attempts. It’s hard to believe
but DeAngelo Williams has only
started 29 games in his fouryear career. Williams has been
extremely productive in those
starts.
Here is a look at where
his accomplishments rank
through his first 25 starts:
•27 rushing touchdowns in his first 25 starts ties for
second among active running backs behind Clinton Portis (28,
Was.) and Michael Turner (27, Atl.)
• 19 runs of 20 yards or more in his first 25 starts rank fourth
among active running backs behind Adrian Peterson (29, Min.),
Clinton Portis (21, Was.), Chris Johnson (19, Tenn.).
The first (13th overall) of Carolina’s two first round selections
in the 2008 NFL Draft, running back Jonathan Stewart made an
immediate impact on a Panthers offense that would finish the season as one of the most productive in team history. Stewart finished
the season with team rookie rushing records of 836 yards and 10
touchdowns on 184 carries. He collected the first 100-yard rushing
game of his NFL career when he posted 130 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries in Week 11 versus Detroit (11/16/08). Stewart
produced his second 100-yard rushing game in his first appearance on Monday Night Football in a Week 14 matchup versus
Tampa Bay (12/8/08), producing 115 yards and two touchdowns
on 15 carries. WILLIAMS CONTINUES TO DELIVER
Running back DeAngelo Williams has been the catalyst behind a rushing offense that is ranked fourth in the NFL. Williams, who ranks sixth
in the NFL in rushing with 1,117 yards with a 5.2 yards per attempt average has recorded four 100-yard games in 2009, including 122 yards on just
13 attempts against Miami (11/19). He has now rushed for over 100 yards in four of the last seven games and has been complemented by Jonathan
Stewart, who has 1,008 yards and 10 touchdowns. The pair has propelled the Panthers to the third best running attack in the NFL with 154.7 yards per
game average. Since Williams took over the Panthers starting job at the beginning of the 2008 season he ranks second in rushing yards (2,632) behind
Adrian Peterson (2,995) ahead of Michael Turner (2,570). He ranks third in rushing TD (25) behind Maurice Jones-Drew (26) and Michael Turner (27).
He is tied for second in 100-yard games (12) with Michael Turner behind Adrian Peterson (13).

MILLENNIUM MEN
Jonathan Stewart eclipsed 1,000 rushing yards for the season with 1,008. He cracked the 1,000-yard plateau on a five-yard run in the
fourth quarter. It marked the fifth time in team history that a player has surpassed 1,000 rushing yards in a season - previously achieved
by Williams with 1,117 in 2009 and a team-record 1,515 in 2008, Stephen Davis with 1,444 in 2003 and Anthony Johnson with 1,120 in
1996.
Stewart has established career highs this season with 1,008 yards and 205 carries, surpassing his totals of 836 yards and 184 attempts
as a rookie in 2008. He leads the Panthers with nine rushing touchdowns this year and ranks second on the team in rushing yards behind
Williams, who has 1,117 yards.
Double Trouble: The Panthers became just the sixth team since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger to have two players with 1,000 rushing
yards in the same season - Williams with 1,117 and Stewart with 1,008.

BEASON ANCHORS MIDDLE
Middle linebacker Jon Beason, who earned his first Pro Bowl nomination in 2008, continues to build off the foundation he
laid last season by notching 156 tackles, three sacks, three interceptions, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble
and four passes defensed through the season’s 15 weeks. In 2008, Beason led the team for the second consecutive year
with 159 tackles and tied for the club lead with three interceptions. He surpassed the 200-career tackles mark in just his 20th
game with 10 versus Atlanta (9/28/08). His three interceptions were the most by a Panthers linebacker since Will Witherspoon
collected four during the 2004 season.

Beason’s two interceptions against the Buccaneers (12/6) marked the 17th time in team history that a player recorded two thefts in one
game. He stepped in front of a Josh Freeman pass at the goal line on Tampa Bay’s first possession of the second half for his first pick.
Following a Carolina turnover in the third quarter, Beason seized the momentum right back on the Buccaneers’ first play with his second
interception at the Panthers’ three-yard line. to win the award.
PEPPERS ADDS KICK TO DEFENSIVE LINE
Defensive end Julius Peppers has achored the Panthers defensive front in 2009, collecting 49 tackles, 10.5 sacks, 33
quarterback pressures, five forced fumbles, one interception for a touchdown and three passes defensed through 15
games. Peppers leads the team with 10.5 sacks this season and ranks as the Panthers’ all-time leader with 81.0. This represents the
sixth time in eight seasons that he has posted 10 or more sacks. Peppers recovered a fumble by Giants quarterback Eli Manning against
that tied him with Kevin Greene for second in team history for the most opponent fumble recoveries with seven. Peppers ranks as the
Panthers’ all-time leader with 29 forced fumbles. He posted his fifth-career interception in Arizona (11/1) picking off quarterback Kurt
Warner and returning it 13 yards for his third-career touchdown. It marked the Panthers first return for a touchdown this season and their
first interception return for a touchdown since cornerback Richard Marshall’s 73-yarder versus San Francisco (12/2/07).
Peppers previously scored on a 46-yard interception return versus Tampa Bay (11/28/04) and 60-yard fumble return at Atlanta
(12/18/04). He is tied with three others for second place in franchise history with two interception returns for touchdowns behind Mike
Minter’s team-record four. In his last five games, Peppers has corralled six sacks. He leads the team
with seven sacks this season and ranks as the Panthers all-time leader with 77.5 sacks and 27
forced fumbles.

GOOD GAMBLE
Cornerback Chris Gamble intercepted his fourth pass of the season and his third in four games when he picked off Patriots
quarterback Tom Brady in the first quarter at New England (12/13). Gamble’s three consecutive games with an interception equalled the
second-longest streak in team history, previously accomplished three times - most recently by Eric Davis in 1999. The team record for the
most consecutive games with an interception is six by Doug Evans in 2001.
Gamble leads the Panthers with four picks this season and ranks second in team history with 24 interceptions and 283 interception
return yards behind Davis with 25 interceptions and Mike Minter with 418 interception return yards. Carolina’s first-round draft choice in
2004, he has led or tied for the team lead in interceptions in four of his first five seasons in addition to ranking first this year.
SAFETY NET
Safety Chris Harris created a turnover for the fifth consecutive game when he intercepted Giants quarterback Eli Manning in the fourth
quarter on the Giants’ final possession. The theft equalled his career high of three interceptions, previously achieved as a rookie with
Chicago in 2005. Harris forced a fumble at the New York Jets (11/29/09), recorded an interception versus Tampa Bay (12/6/09), caused a
fumble at New England (12/13/09), and recovered a fumble and picked off a pass versus Minnesota (12/20/09).
Harris has a knack for taking the ball away. In 2007, he led the NFL and set a Panthers’ single-season record with eight forced fumbles.
In addition to the eight forced fumbles, Harris recovered three fumbles and posted one interception to play a role in eight of Carolina’s 30
takeaways. Safety Charles Godfrey has also gotten into the act. Godfrey has forced turnovers in three of the last four games after picking
off a pass against Tampa Bay (12/6), and forcing fumbles at New England (12/13) and against the Vikings (12/20).
A BAKER’S TREAT
Punter Jason Baker generated a gross average of 36.0 yards and net average of 36.0 yards with one inside the 20, no touchbacks and long of 37
yards on two punts. His gross average decreased to 44.3 yards and his net average remained at 36.1 yards with 21 punts inside the 20, four touchbacks, one block and long of 61 yards this season.
The nine-year pro was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week after generating a gross average of 44.8 yards and net average of 44.0 yards
with two punts inside the 20, no touchbacks and long of 52 yards on four punts versus the Washington Redskins (10/11).

The Sporting News magazine assembled a blue-ribbon voting panel of 106 experts including 27 Hall of Famers and past
and present Pro Bowlers, executives and coaches to compile a list of the 100 best players in the NFL. Four current Carolina
Panthers made the list.
• Defensive End Julius Peppers – No. 16
Franchise leader in sacks (80.0), forced fumbles (30) and blocked kicks (9).
• Wide Reciever Steve Smith – No. 24
Franchise leader in touchdowns (56) and 100-yard receiving games (32).
• Tackle Jordan Gross – No. 55
98 starts are most by an offensive lineman in club history.
• Linebacker Jon Beason – No. 81
First player in team history to lead the team in tackles his first two seasons.
Notably absent from the list was running back DeAngelo Williams who finished the 2008 season third in the NFL with 1,515 rushing
yards on 273 attempts and led the League with 18 rushing touchdowns. Williams has rushed for 1,117 yards and seven touchdowns
in the first 14 games of the 2009 season.
