SUMMER BLOWOUT
TEACHERS & KIDS EVENTS PLANNED
Teacher’s Camp
The first camp is June 19 through June
22nd. We are sorry but the camp is only
open to teachers who have never attended
another camp at Quilt N' Stitch. This is due
to the overwhelming response that we have
to the camp. We want to offer as much individual attention to each camper as possible.
The campers will learn to cut with a rotary
cutter, sew accurate quarter inch seams and
construct a rail fence quilt. We ask that you
come by to sign-up for camp and purchase
your supplies from us. The rail fence quilt
the camper will complete is approximately
46” x 60”. The class will also include ideas
for using the art of quilt making in your
classroom and helpful hints for success. We
hope to see you in camp.
The second teacher’s camp is July 17
through July 20th. This camp is open to
any one who has completed the rail fence
camp either this year or in previous years.
We will construct a mystery quilt in this session. The campers will have a choice of
three different fabric color ways. The campers will be assisted step by step in the construction of this quilt. The mystery is you
do not know what the quilt will look like
when you buy the fabric or as you construct
the quilt. The quilt pattern is revealed upon
completion.

Quilter
Debbie
McLemore is an
example of a
young lady who
wanted to learn to quilt, so she has taken two
quilting classes and is now on her third one!
Shown here is her second quilt which she
had quilted on the long arm quilting machine
here at Quilt ‘n Stitch and will now bind at
home. You can tell that she has found a
wonderful new hobby and is happy with it.
You, too, can join this new Quilt “Craze”
Check the schedule for the new classes.
A Letter from Christy
Hello Fellow Quilters,
Wow, there is so much going on this
quarter I don't know where to begin. I
guess I will start at the beginning with
a Bernina Educator coming to host a
Creative Jeans Party for a “try before
you buy” event. If you don't have a
new machine and would like to try
one, please sign up for this great
event!
The summers are always filled with
kids camps and teachers camps so be
sure to read about the all the fun
classes.
Open House has been a great success
so come April 25th from 4:30-6:30 P.
M. to meet the teachers and see all the
new classes that are being taught. The
Easter Bunny is scheduled to hide a
bunch of eggs throughout the store.
Every egg will have a surprise inside
so come in and enjoy the open house.
Everyone loves a good mystery so
this summer we will be offering a
mystery class taught by Sheila Gilbert
for everyone and Carolyn Boyd for the
teachers. Be sure to come and enjoy
this experience.
You may ask, "Do we have anything
new?" The answer is YES!!! We have
gotten in lots of new fabrics, books,
and embroidery supplies. The new
440QE with stitch regulator is the talk
of the town. It makes machine quilting FUN! Ask for a demo today.
I know Christmas is a long way off,
but the summer is the best time to
think of the gifts you may want to give
during the holidays. We are helping
you by having our annual event of
Christmas In July. This year we have
some great projects planned so make
sure you sign up now.
Happy Quilting,
Christy
Kid’s Camp
Quilt Camp (June 12th through
June 15th) The camper will complete a
quilt top using fabric line called Lazy Dayz,
big, bright, bold flowers. The campers will
construct a quilt top, enjoy story and snack
time, and make new friends during this funfilled week Campers will have a sewing
machine to sew on in camp. We will offer
two sessions of the camp this year (a morning and an afternoon session). Campers will
be limited to eight in each session. The first
eight campers paid will be admitted in
each session and others will be put on a
waiting list. Don’t wait too long to sign-up.
This camp is open to both boys and girls.
Purse Camp (July 11th and 12th)
Girls, this one is for you. We will use the
embroidery and sewing machines to create
a purse. We will also glitz to add sparkle to
your purse. This is a neat way to learn how
to make presents for friends and family.
Camp is limited to the first eight.
Pillow Camp (July 31st and Aug.
1st) All children love to surround themselves with things they make. In this class,
we will make a pillow cover for a travel pillow and a throw pillow. Boys and girls are
both welcome in this camp. Camp is limited to the first eight.

Ask about it today!!!
The BERNINA Stitch Regulator is revolutionizing
free-motion stitching techniques. The stress previously
associated with free-motion sewing has been alleviated with the addition of the BERNINA Stitch Regulator to select BERNINA sewing machines. Presently,
the BSR is standard on the BERNINA aurora 440 and
artista 730.
It is optional on the BERNINA artista 630 and 640
models. With the addition of a purchased upgrade kit,
the BERNINA artista 200 can also be part of the BSR
family of machines. The ease by which even the novice free-motion stitcher can achieve beautiful results is
leading to new exploration of this time-honored process.
Perfecting Your Free-motion Stitching
Basic Training
Attach BSR foot, lower feed dogs, thread machine,
activate needle stop down, alternately select Mode 1/
Mode 2.
Sink and then raise needle to bring bobbin thread to
top. Take a couple of stitches to secure, trim thread
ends.
With even speed, move fabric front to back to get feel
of the machine.
Practice using different motions: Zigzag, Blocks, U’s,
I’s, puzzle pieces
Painting by Number
Using a print fabric as a guide, “color in” print areas
using a thread color slightly contrasting the print to
draw attention to the stitching. Stitch direction should
follow the direction of the print. For example, when
stitching a leaf, stitching should feather out from the
center of the leaf at an angle, enhancing the shape.
Build up stitching slowly—less is more. Use multiple
shades of thread for a more realistic appearance.
Tip: Select a fabric with a large print to experiment
with thread painting by “following the lines”.
Tip: Thread paint on two layers of polyester organza
and Aqua Film to create “embroidered appliqués”.
Rocking Bobbin
Wind bobbin with heavier thread, insert into second
bobbin case, and adjust tension on bobbin case. Working from the wrong side of the fabric, stitch the desired free-motion pattern. To secure thread tails, use a
tapestry needle to pull bobbin thread to wrong side.
Tip: Be sure to keep a separate bobbin case specifically for bobbin-work. When loosening the tension,
hold the bobbin case over a container so that if the
screw falls out it will be caught.
Tip: Bobbin work is not just for free-motion work.
Use this same technique with the feed dogs up and
machine decorative stitches. Adjust the stitch settings
for more variety.
Special points of interest:
• Mode 1 with foot control
-Needle moves when foot control is pressed
-Allows a securing stitch
-Sews like home machine BUT with regular stitches
• Mode 1 without foot control

TEACHER FOR
SUMMER
Charlotte
Humphrey
Charlotte has
worked at Quilt ‘n
Stitch since 1997.
She loves quilting,
sewing, and embroidery. However, quilting is her “thing”! She
has designed two
beautiful quilt patterns, Stars Under Bali
Skies, and Bali Crossroads , and sold them
all over the U.S.
Charlotte loves teaching and has been
teaching classes here since she came to Quilt
‘n Stitch. She can help you understand any
sewing technique.
A doting grandmother, Charlotte has seven
grandchildren. Two teen-age grandsons and
their mother live with her. Another daughter lives in West Monroe and has two young
children (one, a new baby) whom Charlotte
keeps in the day time. The third daughter
and her children live in Texas, so you can
imagine that Charlotte tries to get there often.
A graduate of Auburn University in Home
Economics Education, Charlotte grew up in
Alabama. However, she has lived here for
many years, coming to Monroe with her
husband, deceased Rev. Mickey Humphrey.
Opal Cupples and Jessica Robertson
are our FABRICOLICS WINNERS this
quarter. They have each won 12 fat quarters
of their choice.
-Electric Needle
-Unplug foot control
-Use start/stop button and needle starts moving
-Allows a securing stitch
• Mode 2 with foot control
-Press foot control and move fabric to make needle
move up and down
-Use Securing function to lock stitches
Note: Presser foot Pressure is lowered to 1 when using both modes thereby allowing easier movement of
fabric under the foot.

Nationally Known Teachers
Speak Out
Below are sewing tips, special techniques,
testimonials, and inspirational ideas from
well-known teachers who love BERNINA.
They teach nationally and internationally,
spreading the word about their personal
choice of sewing machine, BERNINA.
GEORGIA BONESTEEL
Teacher and Author (www.georgiabonesteel.
com)
“There are several presser feet I use regularly
(Buttonhole Foot #3A, Darning Foot #9,
Clear Foot #34) that do not have thread slots
to allow the thread to be pulled to the back
under the foot. An easy solution: Before attaching the foot, simply slip the foot up onto
the needle (so the eye is below the foot), pull
the thread to the back, and then attach the
foot.”
“Making a mistake is the sincerest form of
creativity!”
“Remember: A task easily done leaves little
satisfaction! So never deny the time and energy spent on a sewing or quilting project –
you will be satisfied and proud upon completion.”
LINDA TUEFEL
Publisher and Author of KOOS Couture Collage: Inspiration & Techniques and Images
on Fabric (www.dragonthreads.com)
“I can’t do free-motion stitching well so I
love using the leather roller foot (#55) for
echo quilting! I put the edge of the foot on
the design with the needle close to the foot.
It’s easy to “trace” it and have perfect
stitches.”
CATHIE I. HOOVER
Teacher, Author, and BERNINA Fashion
Show participant
“BERNINA presser feet are engineered to do
specific tasks. Use the correct foot, following
the directions for that foot and your results
will A++!”
KAREN KAY BUCKLEY
Teacher, Author, Designer (www.
karenkaybuckley.com)
“One of my favorite features on the BERNINA machines is the optional magnifiers.
What an excellent feature – my work is so
much better because of this accessory!”
BOBBIE AUG
Author, Teacher, Certified Appraiser,
Quiltmaker, and Author of String Quilts With
Style, Vertical Quilts With Style, Charm
Quilts With Style, More Vertical Quilts With
Style, Vintage Quilts, Antique Quilts and
Textiles, The Calico Man from Schroeder
Publishing/AQS/Collector's Books
“When sewing on my BERNINA, I keep a
3" piece of 2-sided transparent tape on my
sewing table next to my machine. I put all
those little wispy pieces of thread that never
seem destined for the wastebasket, on the
tape. When the piece is covered, I peel it off
and throw it away and start over with a new
piece of tape.”
BONNIE LYN MCCAFFERY
Quilt Artist, Teacher, and Author of Portrait
Paintings: Painted Faces You Can Do and
designer of Digi Bobbe (www.
bonniemccaffery.com)
“When using invisible threads, use a fine
sewing machine needle such as a 70/10. Using a needle that is too large leaves a large
hole in the fabric. Because the invisible
thread is fine, it won’t fill the hole a large
needle makes.”
ALEX ANDERSON
Quiltmaker and Author (www.
alexandersonquilts.com)
“For a perfect ¼” seam, use Patchwork
Foot #37 along with the little indentation in
front of the right feed dog. Using this indentation as your guide will help ensure accuracy. Test: Sew two 1¼” wide strips together – should measure 2” when pressed
open.”

CLUBS
RED HAT
SEW’N SEWS CLUB
Sew’n Sews will have their last regular
gathering before the summer break on
Wednesday, May 17, at 10 A.M. at Quilt ‘n
Stitch. A fun stitching activity has been
planned to go along with our highlight of the
day, luncheon with dessert! For those of
you who meet our guideline of being 50 or
older, you are missing a great opportunity to
form new friendships or continue old ones
with this group. Laughing is the main
course at both the sew session and the
luncheon.— no rules, no agenda, just fun.
Come join us. For more information, call
Ann at 343-3759 or the store at 396-6020.
Around the World Club
Around the World Club dates are a little
off this quarter so check the dates on the calendar. We are busy learning the skill of paper
piecing. The members will also do fussy cutting techniques in the up-coming months as
we complete some wonderful kaleidoscope
squares using this method.
.
THIMBLEBERRIES CLUB
Thimbleberries meets on every third Saturday. We have a great group of girls! We are
currently working on two sampler quilts and
they are gorgeous! Also, we are working on
a nine-patch exchange. Someone wins a
bunch of nine-patches every month. Christy
and Rhonda have ordered new Thimbleberry
lines of fabric including the Christmas selections of both woven and flannel. They also
ordered the books to go with these lines of
fabric. So come and check out the new fabric
and join the fun!
CLUBS
BLOCK WATCHERS
CLUB
Block Watchers Club continues to meet
one Friday night a month. They are finishing
up their first quilt top, the Lemoyne Star.
The members have learned a lot about cutting
diamonds and sewing bias edges. They are
starting their second top in May. They have
decided to do a sampler using Eleanor Burns’
Egg Money Quilts as a reference. They are
well on their way to completing their goal of
three quilt tops this year. There is still time to
join this group and enjoy one Friday night a
month of sewing and fellowship with a wonderful group of ladies.
BERNINA CLUB
Bernina Club is meeting once a month
and members are enjoying many different
projects. The best part of Bernina Club is
the show and tell that members bring. So,
make an effort to bring show and tell in
April. Let’s all try to have something. Our
program will feature graduation and wedding gifts
In February, Linda Nelson graciously presented the baby bib made from a finger towels and t-shirt ribbing. In March, Rhonda
and Christy presented a software demo and a
completed project using cut-away designs
on t-shirts. We are busy planning new projects for the next few months.
In May, we will be featuring summer extras. Please note the date change of May 16
due to the creative jeans party.
The club does not meet in the summer
months but will resume in September.
Christy has promised a big blow-out in September but she is not telling us what. If you
have an idea for a club meeting, we would
love to hear from you.
FRIDAY/SATURDAY
SAMPLER CLUB
You will want to come to see all the new
fabrics, quilt kits, books, embroidery cards
and more at the Friday/Saturday Sampler
Club meetings which are held on the first Friday and Saturday of each month when they
fall in the same month. Friday’s meetings
are at 11 A.M. and Saturday’s at 10 A.M.
Don’t forget to bring your new Show and
Tell for everyone to see and to get your name
in the drawings. What a good time this is to
come to see the new things in the store, to
visit with friends, and to make all those selections of items that you want and need!
The Easter display in the Book Room gives you
ideas for sewing and gifting. The quilt is A Sweet
Bundle of Love. Easter embroidered items are
also displayed.

Papercrafting With Your Sewing
Machine
by Marlis Bennett, Bernina Educator
Sewing machine, paper, needles and
thread—a new playground! Before stitching
on paper, read these tips to make the process
smooth and easy.
As with any sewing project, make sure
your machine is clean, oiled and in good repair. Thread jams or pulls can wreck havoc
on a paper project, tearing away stitching and
leaving holes in the paper. Unlike working
on fabric, holes will not go away and will cry
out for creative embellishments.
You can sew on any type of paper. However, the weight of the paper will dictate that
stabilizer be used if either the paper is lightweight or the stitches are dense. Use a fusible
cut-away stabilizer or a temporary spray adhesive such as HRFive to position the stabilizer on the back of the paper as needed. Stabilizers are a paper’s best friend. Generally
speaking, a cut-away stabilizer is preferred
over a tear away stabilizer. There is a risk
that the tear away stabilizer will tear away
from your paper leaving you with a mess. A
good stabilizer to try is Poly-Mesh. It is light
enough to not add any weight to the back of
your work.
Needles come in a variety of sizes and
types. Use an appropriate needle for the
thread and paper that you intend to use.
Heavier paper and threads require the use of
larger needles, such as 90/14’s. Lightweight
paper and lighter threads can get by with
75/10’s. A general guideline should be that
the thread fills the hole created by the needle.
Used sewing needles can be used as long as
they are not bent and are free from burrs. Paper dulls needles quickly so be prepared to
change needles frequently.
Threads are a designer’s paint palette. Any
thread you would use for sewing can be used
when sewing on paper. The use of a heavier
thread adds more drama to your work. There
are many new variegated threads on the market and they create wonderful visual interest
on your project. A slightly reduced upper/
needle tension usually gives the best results.
Bobbin thread should be used in your bobbin
so as not to add more bulk to the back of
your work. Adjust your needle tension accordingly.
Most importantly—test before you sew!
Needle Tid-Bits for paper follow on page 10.

CLASS
DESCRIPTIONS
Due to the problem we are having with class cancellations at the last minute and no shows we are
going to have to start enforcing our store policy of
prepaying for classes. This is only fair to the people who have taken the time to prepare and reserve
time to teach the class. The policy states that you
must pay for a class before your name is put on the
list of class members. You may give us your credit
card number or pay by check. If you cancel four
days prior to the class, you will be given a refund.
If the store cancels the class, we will also give you a
refund.

Hi Emma, I am getting ready to embroider
on some really soft material called
Minkee......it is being used now for baby
blankets. Could you tell me what stabilizer to
use, and do I hoop the Minkee with the stabilizer together? Or do I adhere the stabilizer
to the wrong side of the Minkee first and then
hoop it? I am very confused about this and
need some advice on both the stabilizer and
the hooping method. Also how much stabilizer do I use? Thanks for any help you can
give me....Judy
Dear Judy,
I’ve sewn with Minkee quite a bit and I
love it. I have hooped the stabilizer and
Minkee together as one. I have also hooped
just the stabilizer, sprayed the top with temporary spray adhesive like HRFive and
placed the Minkee on it. Either way will
work fine. I’ve made several Minkee Pals.
These cute little animals are made ENTIRELY in the hoop! Just stitch, turn right
side out, and stuff. OESD has two packs
now – Minkee Pals 1 Design Pack 11936
and a brand new one, Minkee Pals 2 Design
Pack 12061.
I’ve also made several quilts, as well as
Christmas stockings. Always use a topping
such as Aqua Film to keep the stitches from
sinking into the pile fabric. Most of the
Aqua Film can be torn away so you don’t
have to dampen the fabric. For the backing
stabilizer, I’ve used PolyMesh Cut Away for
most things. I’ve also used Heavy Weight
Cut Away for more stitch-intensive designs.
Another example from 3/09/06 is the following:
Dear Emma, I have a hint I use for jump
stitches between eyes, as I agree with the person who wrote your question for hint of the
week on it being hard to cut. I go into my
software (Bernina Artista Version 4) and
make the second eye to be stitched a separate
color, so the machine will automatically stop,
The very newest Artista embroidery cards/CDs
and sticks are shown below. In addition, there are
many other designs available to you. Be sure to
check out the wall in the Machine Room for all the
brochures on the many cards that are available.
Then, remember to look at the catalog of the
many designs that you can buy through Embroidery Take-out with the CD made right at Quilt’n
Stitch! OESD has a large variety of designs from
which you can pick and choose the 10 or 20 designs that you want to use for your CD for a very
reasonable price.
clip the thread, then wait for me to put on
new thread. I just lift the presser foot as if I
have changed colors, start again, and am able
to clip the beginning thread close as well before it does the second eye.
Roberta from San Diego
Dear Roberta,
Thanks for the hint! You can also do this
with Explorations Embroidery Software. If
you don't have software, then it is up to you
to decide if the tiny stitch is "worth" clipping.
If you do decide to clip, then try using an
Embroiderer's Wand (or a large tapestry needle.) Slide the tip of the wand under the
thread. This will lift the thread so that you
can clip just the tiny stitch. Sometimes I have
used the tip of the wand to "bury" that tiny
stitch under the surrounding stitches. This
can work OK if the threads are not too highly
contrasting in colors. The Embroiderer's
Wand is a handy little gadget that can also be
used to pull loops through to the back side of
the article. Just push the tip into the fabric
where the loop enters the fabric. Then twist
the wand as the textured end enters the fabric.
You will still want to remember to trim the
stitches on the back no shorter than onequarter to one-inch on the back.
Happy "Em"broidering,
Emma
