Since 1986, the Houston Hispanic Forum’s Career and Education Day has served as a great opportunity for students and their parents to meet with college representatives and learn about careers, financial aid and the college admission process. The event attracts thousands of students, parents and educators and is supported in partnership with many school districts in the greater Houston region. I commend those who have worked with the Houston Hispanic Forum to emphasize the importance of higher education for all students in the Houston area and for making the 28th Annual Career and Education Day possible. Medina, Attorney, Former Texas Supreme Court Justice Justice David Medina was born on Galveston Island and raised in Hitchcock, Texas. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Texas State University in 1980, earning academic honors as a member of the Dean’s list. Justice Medina later went on to earn his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from South Texas College of Law in Houston in 1989 while working full time for Cooper Industries, Inc. and the Traveler’s Insurance Company before that. Upon graduating from law school, Justice Medina became the first Cooper attorney to be hired directly after law school and was promoted to Counsel, Litigation. In that role, he was responsible for a docket that included environmental, product liability, toxic tort, real estate, insurance coverage and commercial litigation. At the same time, he also taught Advanced Civil Trial Advocacy as an Adjunct Professor at South Texas College of Law. In 1996, Governor George W. Bush appointed David to the 157th State District Court located in Harris County, Texas. He was later elected that November and became the first Republican Hispanic Justice elected in Harris County. He was later re-elected in 1998. In January of 2004, Justice Medina was appointed by Governor Rick Perry to serve as General Counsel to the Governor until he was later appointed to the Texas Supreme Court by Governor Perry. In November of 2006, Justice Medina was elected by Texas voters to a full six year term. He has the honor of being the first student from South Texas College of Law to serve as the Governor’s General Counsel and the Texas Supreme Court. Justice Medina also received National recognition in August 2010 when the Hispanic National Bar Association presented him with its prestigious National Latino Justice of the Year award. In his spare time, Justice Medina enjoys playing the drums, is an avid outdoorsman and remains active in martial arts competitions. In 2011, Justice Medina was inducted into the U.S. Martial Arts Hall of Fame. We designed a plan to walk you through the critical steps in the college admission and financial aid processes and help you reach your goal of enrollment in a college or university of your choice. Prepare for College (Recommended for 6th to 11th graders), Room 350 C What do you know about the college-going process? If someone offered you a million dollars to tell them the steps they needed to take to prepare for college, would you win the money? This session will focus on the basics of college preparation: terminology, recommended coursework, choosing a college and major, getting involved while in middle and high school and building a resume. When you are prepared for college, you win! Get Set! Apply to College (Recommended for high school students), Room 340 B All high school students and parents are strongly encouraged to attend this session. Learn how to prepare for the college application process from expert panel members representing community colleges and public/private colleges and universities. Save time by determining how to maximize your opportunities when selecting a college. This session will cover admission basics, including the college admissions timeline and process, standardized admission tests (ACT/ SAT) and essay writing tips. The panel members will provide critical information and answer questions about college admissions. Get Set! Apply for Financial Aid, Room 340 A (Recommended for parents and students of all ages. It’s never too early to learn about financial aid!) Are you worried that you might not have enough money to pay for college? Come to this interactive session and learn how you can apply for financial aid. In this session, you will learn about how to get started to be considered for the various types of financial aid, including grants, college work-study, need-based loans, and scholarships. GO! Life as a College Student and What You Can Expect (Recommended for 11th and 12th graders), Room 350 F What is life like for a student at a college or university? Learn more about how to prepare for the transition from high school to a college or university. This session will cover the change in academic responsibilities, basics about course scheduling/academic calendar, life on a college campus, and the importance of keeping an academic/social life balance. Information will also be provided about the resources that colleges and universities offer students so that they may be successful during their college career. Come to this session to learn more about college/university life and get answers to your questions. One-on-One Help: Meet With a Financial or Admissions Counselor (Pre-Lab), Room 350 A/D Not sure whether you meet the requirements to get financial aid? Do you have specific questions about how to get into college? Come meet with a financial aid or admissions counselor to get answers to your questions. Counselors will be available to guide you through any questions or concerns you might have concerning the college financial aid or admissions process. Computer Lab Available: Start Your Admissions and/or Financial Aid Application Today!, Room 350 B/E The computer lab is available to submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Also, if you have not yet applied to college, you can learn more about applying online via ApplyTexas and start the application process. The TASFA will also be available for those students who are not eligible for federal funding but may qualify for state financial aid. Does the college have a selective admission policy? (Must you have a minimum GPA or SAT/ACT score to be admitted?) 2. What is the average GPA of the entering freshman class? 3. Does the school have an early admission deadline? 4. Are there other admission deadlines? 5. How long will it take the school to process your admission application? 6. What’s the student population like? Traditional college-age or non-traditional? Do most students live on campus or off campus? From local/regional area or from across the country? Male/female ratio? 7. What extracurricular activities are available? 8. You want to live on-campus, how are roommates determined? What happens if you don’t get along with your roommate? 9. Is Internet access available in dorm rooms? How many computer labs are there on campus? Are they accessible 24 hours a day? 10. What are weekends like on campus? 11. Are there any financial aid applications or forms to submit in addition to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)? 12. What are the deadlines for financial aid applications? 13. Purchase airline tickets early to save you money. • Plan a budget. • If you are just now deciding that you want to attend college, it may not be too late for some schools. Contact the school you are interested in attending to find out what you need to do. • Set up an address/phone book for relatives and friends you want to keep in touch with. Include emergency numbers like doctors and insurance companies. • If you haven’t done so, make sure that you schedule and attend freshman orientation.
