Mayor
P.O. Box 1562
Houston, Texas 77251-1562
February 8, 2014
Greetings:
As Mayor of Houston, I congratulate the Houston Hispanic Forum on its 30th
anniversary and on the occasion of its 28th Annual Career and Education Day.
Since 1986, the Houston Hispanic Forum’s Career and Education Day has served
as a great opportunity for students and their parents to meet with college
representatives and learn about careers, financial aid and the college admission
process. The event attracts thousands of students, parents and educators and is
supported in partnership with many school districts in the greater Houston region.
I commend those who have worked with the Houston Hispanic Forum to emphasize
the importance of higher education for all students in the Houston area and for making
the 28th Annual Career and Education Day possible.
Best wishes for a successful event.
Sincerely,
Annise D. Parker
Mayor

The 2014 TG College Admissions and Financial Aid Information Plaza is designed to give you information and counseling services specific to your situation. We designed a plan to walk you through the critical steps in the college admission and financial aid processes and help you reach your goal of enrollment in a college or university of your choice.
Classes will be held at the top of each hour as follows:
10:00 AM – 10:50 AM
11:00 AM – 11:50 AM
NOON – 12:50 PM
Get Ready! Prepare for College (Recommended for 6th to 11th graders), Room 350 C
What do you know about the college-going process? If someone offered you a million dollars to tell them the steps
they needed to take to prepare for college, would you win the money? This session will focus on the basics of college
preparation: terminology, recommended coursework, choosing a college and major, getting involved while in middle and
high school and building a resume. When you are prepared for college, you win!
Get Set! Apply to College (Recommended for high school students), Room 340 B
All high school students and parents are strongly encouraged to attend this session. Learn how to prepare for the
college application process from expert panel members representing community colleges and public/private colleges
and universities. Save time by determining how to maximize your opportunities when selecting a college. This session
will cover admission basics, including the college admissions timeline and process, standardized admission tests (ACT/
SAT) and essay writing tips. The panel members will provide critical information and answer questions about college
admissions.
Get Set! Apply for Financial Aid, Room 340 A
(Recommended for parents and students of all ages. It’s never too early to learn about financial aid!)
Are you worried that you might not have enough money to pay for college? Come to this interactive session and learn
how you can apply for financial aid. In this session, you will learn about how to get started to be considered for the
various types of financial aid, including grants, college work-study, need-based loans, and scholarships.
GO! Life as a College Student and What You Can Expect (Recommended for 11th and 12th graders), Room 350 F
What is life like for a student at a college or university? Learn more about how to prepare for the transition from high
school to a college or university. This session will cover the change in academic responsibilities, basics about course
scheduling/academic calendar, life on a college campus, and the importance of keeping an academic/social life balance.
Information will also be provided about the resources that colleges and universities offer students so that they may be
successful during their college career. Come to this session to learn more about college/university life and get answers to
your questions.
One-on-One Help: Meet With a Financial or Admissions Counselor (Pre-Lab), Room 350 A/D
Not sure whether you meet the requirements to get financial aid? Do you have specific questions about how to get into
college? Come meet with a financial aid or admissions counselor to get answers to your questions. Counselors will

admissions process.
