My confidence has gone right down and I find it hard to just get out there! I like to read, and I go to the library to be around people sometimes. That’s where I picked up a LOOPS leaflet! I was nervous about the idea of calling and speaking to a stranger, and to be honest I wasn’t really sure what I was calling for! I didn’t know what kind of opportunities there could be, or what I wanted exactly. I confessed to the girl on the phone that I wasn’t very good at talking to people and that I felt a bit silly calling, and she was very encouraging! She told me that I was talking perfectly and that we had plenty of time to chat and come up with some ideas. We spoke about my family and friends and my life at present; I must say I felt like I was speaking to an old friend! We had a few laughs on the phone and it was really just what I needed. We came up with some things that I could do and she told me that she would phone me back the following week. I was filled with hope in the meantime and felt much more upbeat going about my things! GARDENING TIP WINDOW SILL PLANTS I told my son and my GP about my new pursuit! The nice girl called me back and told me about University of the 3rd Age or U3A, which is a hub of activities and learning opportunities for older people! I’m very excited to meet more folk like myself and to learn new things. I really can’t thank LOOPS enough for helping me. Thank you! Any vegetable, herb or flower seeds can be grown by scattering the seeds in a shallow dish on a bright window sill. Put a layer of compost in the dish and water lightly. Scatter seeds and cover again with compost. Place in a polythene bag and tie bag at top. When green shoots appear remove from bag and when plants have grown bigger, place into individual pots and continue to grow. - by Amelia our Friday Customer Service Volunteer Local Opportunities for Older People Phoneline Project Loops 20pp_A4_FINAL.indd 4 4 [email protected] 14/05/2015 14:46 Call or make an appointment for a Community Champion to visit you at your home! OVER 65 IN AUSTRALIA My name is Emily and I have been volunteering with the NW & SE LOOPs phone line project since the end of January, I study Social Sciences at Edinburgh Napier University and I have recently been accepted to take part in a student exchange to go to a university in Brisbane for a semester. I have been doing a lot of research into Australia and it sparked my interest to use the information and relate it to my volunteering work at LOOPs, so I have decided to look into the community of 65+ down under! Australia has the lowest population density in the whole world with just two people per sq. km. The total population is approximately 21,262,641 and approximately 2,687,114 are aged 65+. The vast majority of Australians live in cities which are near the coast (and beach!). In Australia you are not considered ‘older’ until you are 72, Australians believe that they are much fitter and healthier than previous generations, they feel that they no longer TIPS FOR USING YOUR have to ‘act their age’ and they do not intend to grow old in a similar way to their COMPUTER AND iPAD parents. MY TRIP TO INDIA IN 2015 My recent trip to Northern India was the first time I had ever visited this incredible country. For three weeks I travelled with a group of 16 , some of whom were very experienced already with the Indian customs and ways; others like me were novices. The trip began in New Delhi and we quickly realised that our coach driver had amazing spacial awareness, weaving their vehicles through the cars, tuk tuks, people, pigs, horses and even recumbant cows. India is a busy place but everybody seems to find time to find their spiritual side. We visited Hindu, Sikh and Jain temples as well as mosques. The most uplifting time was seeing the dawn over the Ganges at Varanasi. You can see why it is so holy to the pilgrims who gather there every day. We travelled on to Jhansi, Orcha, and then to Agra. Here the highlight was the Taj Mahal and, yes, we did get to sit and have our photos taken on the seat made famous by our own Princess Diana. Our next stop was to see the tigers in the Ranthambore National Park. We were very excited to see two cubs through the dense undergrowth. We also saw a wide variety of birds, deer, monkeys and crocodiles. In Jaipur we were able to relive our own ‘Exotic Marigold Hotel’ moment (the film is set here) when our coach nearly got a parking fine. At the A POEM Amber Palace we swapped our coach for an elephant to make our grand entrance. In THE THEORY OF RELATIVITY Nawalgarh we experienced the old world charm of the havelis, the beautiful painted homes of the wealthy spice traders - now Emigration sadly needing some TLC. We also learnt For a snail how to cook Indian food (rotis and dal) in a Pansies to potting shed welcoming guest house. Our adventure Seven hour trail continued with a trip to the beautiful town of Jaisalmer, whose walls shimmer like a Puffins on Staffa mirage out of the Thar desert. Then onward Mid July to Jodhpur before ending our journey in Atlantic by August Udaipur. This town is known as the ‘Pearl of Seven day fly Rajasthan’. The way it shimmers across the man-made lake is beautiful. India is truly a Zero to Twenty magical place. Whole life span Twenty to Eighty This only gives a snap-shot of my time there. Flash in the pan! I can’t wait to go back and explore more. - by Mary McCabe www.loopsprojects.org.uk Loops 20pp_A4_FINAL.indd 9 - by Barbara our Thursday Phoneline Volunteer 9 [email protected] 14/05/2015 14:46 Oot an’ aboot when over 65 DIETARY FIBRE Dietary fibre is a very important part of a healthy balanced diet. However, most of us do not consume enough of it. Although we are meant to get 18g each day, our average is just 14g. But why is fibre so important? (It’s not just to ‘keep us regular’!) Health benefits of a high fibre diet: • • • • • • • • • Keeps us regular Helps reduce cholesterol Lowers risk of heart disease, strokes, bowel cancer and diabetes Assists in removing waste from the body May help lower blood pressure Keeps us fuller for longer, helping us to maintain a healthy weight Produces vitamins K and B12, plus healthy fatty acids in the colon TIPS FOR INCREASING YOUR FIBRE Provides food for healthy gut bacteria Helps relieve diarrhoea, constipation and eases haemorrhoids What are good sources of fibre? All wholemeal/wholegrain foods, fruit and vegetables, oats, pulses, nuts and seeds. If suffering from constipation we should increase fruit, vegetable (and water) intakes and lower wholemeal/wholegrain foods. If experiencing diarrhoea we should do the opposite! Adults diagnosed with any type of bowel disorder should consult their GP about fibre intakes. Contact: [email protected] - by Chris Mantle, a Senior Food & Health Development Worker for Edinburgh Community Food Local Opportunities for Older People Phoneline Project Loops 20pp_A4_FINAL.indd 10 - Swap white bread, rice and pasta for tastier wholemeal alternatives - Eat more oat-based foods such as noadded-sugar porridge, muesli or oatcakes - Try to incorporate fibre into every meal - Go for whole fruit rather than fruit juice - Go for more highly nutritious and high fibre lentils, beans and other pulses - Try going ‘veggie’ a few days a week - Increase your fibre intake slowly to reduce the risk of bloating and stomach cramps - Drink plenty of water to help the passage of the fibre in the gut 10 [email protected] 14/05/2015 14:46 We can access lots of up-to-date information on what is going on in Edinburgh so give us a call! VIOLET’S STORY I saw a LOOPS poster when I was waiting to see my doctor. It certainly wasn’t something that I was expecting! I don’t get up to an awful lot and there’s not really much happening in my area, at least not for oldies like me! And that’s just what I was used to. I was intrigued about what ‘opportunities’ there could be for me, but to be truthful I was also a little apprehensive. I have a slight limp and I don’t feel very confident. I rang the number when I got home and spoke to the nice lady about me and my concerns. She was so helpful and suggested that maybe I should try to improve my confidence with walking. I thought it wasn’t such a bad idea! She went off and did some research and got back to me shortly after with some options. She told me about walking groups with Ageing Well and more activities with Edinburgh Leisure’s Get Up and Go. She said she could pass my contact details onto them and I said go ahead! They got in touch with me the next day and now I’m all set for my adventure! I’m feeling very excited! NORTH WEST CARERS CENTRE (NWCC) North West Carers Centre (NWCC) has been part of the furniture in the local area for nearly 20 years, and you might know us. NWCC supports Carers from the age of 5, and our oldest Carers are in their 90s! You might be a Carer who has used our services, or you might be one of the many people who don’t know that they are Carers. So what is a Carer? A Carer is anyone who cares, without pay, for a family member, neighbour or friend who cannot cope without this support. The person you support may have a disability or be ill, have age related conditions such as dementia or mental health needs. Caring is not restricted to helping someone with tasks like bathing and going to the toilet NEW Web map of services on www.edinburgh.gov.uk A Web Map interface containing older people’s services & activities will be publicly available on the CEC website, this has been a project in conjunction with EVOC. This will be supported on a user-friendly environment which allows users to find information by simply checking boxes. Tools such as ‘Find Address’ search engine will be present, the possibility of zoom in and out to a street level and also identifying each item on the map by just clicking on it. The purpose of this map is to help anyone who wants to get information of what is happening nearby for older people, volunteers, family, carers or social workers. Making the process of finding information and getting ‘out and about’ as simple as possible and links people 65+ into their local community. – Carers could be giving emotional support, supporting someone to deal with letters and bills, helping with medication, shopping – the list is extensive.
