As citizens, we honor the service, commitment and sometimes the ultimate sacrifice of the men and women who serve our country. The Our Heroes’ Tree® program provides a forum for libraries to erect heroes’ trees to recognize citizens who have served our nation in times of peace and conflict. Our Heroes’ Tree will stand in the lobby of the Seymour Library at Crothersville and at Medora in November and will be decorated with ornaments from anyone in the community. The national Our Heroes’ Tree® project was created in 2005 by Stephanie Pickup and Marlene Lee. Make or purchase your ornament and put your soldier’s, sailor’s, airman’s or marine’s name, picture or other mementos on it. Fill out a slip of ownership so you can pick up the ornament in December. Supplies for making simple ornaments will be available near the tree. A drop-in Create an The Our Heroes’ Tree® Ornament program is held at the Seymour Library on Saturday, November 2. Supplies for simple ornaments will be located inside the Kidz Korner doors. Please help us honor our military personnel by making an ornament in honor of a loved one or friend. Yesterday Today @ Your Library Some cling tightly to their memories of the libraries of their childhood. Long gone are small dark rooms and ceiling high book stacks. Today our libraries are full of light and activity. On any day you will find families hustling in and out of the library to take care of urgent needs for movies or music, while others are quietly checking the shelves for a hidden treasure to read. People are found meeting at tables where they can discuss social service issues or print out business reports. Crowds of young people meet to have fun. The library is bustling to fulfill its mission of serving the people who support it. The Seymour Library Christmas tree will be decorated by the Sakura Helpng Hands this year. Don’t miss seeing it this December! Yesterday/Today Cont. from Front Many programs fill the library calendar at http://myjclibrary.org. These are either library programs given free or at low cost to our customers, or the meetings of area organizations or businesses. Meeting rooms can be reserved when library programs are not on the schedule. Stop by your friendly library service desk or call any of the three locations: Seymour—522-3412 ext. 1243, Crothersville—793-2927, or Medora—966-2278. Signing up for library programs is already easy. For most programs, just go online to http://myjclibrary.org/events and reserve places for yourself or your family at the programs of your choice. You can also call any one of the three library locations to register, or stop by a service desk at any of those locations. If you are looking for quiet at the Seymour Library, try the Quiet Study Room next to the Computer Lab. Tutoring rooms are available and can often be used for study when the rooms are not needed for tutoring. In addition to items you can take out from the library, there are many online resources and in-library print items made freely available to library cardholders. Customers with downloadable devices enjoy a multitude of ebooks and music obtained through the library. Researchers at Indiana University conducted a 2008 economic-impact analysis of the state’s public libraries and reported a return of $2.38 to the community for each dollar of investment. In a recent study by the University of Minnesota, a sampling of public libraries across the nation shows the return on a dollar of investment averages $4.22. (Minnesota public libraries’ return on investment: Consulting report. (2011). Duluth, MN: UMD Labovitz School of Business Economics.) Fill your winter months with time in your Jackson County Public Library or online at http://myjclibrary.org and enjoy the benefits of your tax dollars. 4 Kidz Programs ARTS & CRAFTS PRESCHOOL CRAFTS Wednesdays, 10:30 am November 6, 13, 20 & 27 December 4 Open to ages 3-5 years CHRISTMAS IN A BAG Saturdays, November 2 OR 16 10 am OR 2 pm Sponsored by the Friends of the Library Open to all An adult must accompany children. The Friends of the Jackson County Public Library hope you and yours had a glorious time at Oktoberfest while your car was parked in the library parking lot to benefit the library. Board members of the Friends want to thank those who devoted many hours to helping us this past quarter by organizing boxes and books or “manning” the book sales and the Oktoberfest parking lot. Thank you one and all! Friends has a stellar book sale planned for the first weekend in November, November 1, 2 and 3 at the Seymour Library. The library’s meeting room will contain tables and tables of used books, just waiting for your perusal! Hardback books cost $1. Children’s books and paperbacks are priced at Friends Corner cont. 50 cents. DVDs will be yours for only $2, and there will be other items at budget friendly prices. As usual, Friday afternoon is reserved for members of FOL only. All are invited to join the Friends of the Library at any time. The regular book sale room will be opened as well. We also have a highly popular “Sunday bag special.” Regular shopping begins at 10 am Saturday. Come to the sale, and go home with a literary treasure (or two). There are carts of Friends' materials for purchase at the Crothersville and Medora libraries. Friends agreed to “pretty up” the landscapes of the libraries by supplying them with a variety of mums. For rainy days, we added to the lobbies of Seymour, Crothersville, and Medora libraries umbrella bag “depot stations” to keep the insides of the libraries dry. Friends is funding $300 for upcoming library programs, but the largest expenditure is for a second spinning book rack for the Book Nook. We hope this gives you a wider choice of reading material. Lastly, the Board once again thanks those of you who donate those materials. Because of your generosity, we have the funds to improve our libraries. See you at the Big Book Sale in November and at the regular Book Cellar from 10 am to 1 pm on Saturday, December 7! (9:30 start for Friends members) Big Fall Sale Friday, November 1 4 to 5:30 pm (Friends members only) Saturday, November 2 10 am to 1 pm Sunday, November 3 2 to 4 pm ($3 bag) Seymour Library Meeting Room 6 The next book sale is 2013 Summer Reading Program Final Results Top readers were Grace Eubank, Top Adult Reader; Mika Campbell and Madison Auleman, Top Youth Readers; and Stephanie Lewis, Top Teen Reader. 2,237 people of all ages participated in this year’s “Dig Into Reading” summer reading program. 1,407 children and adults finished the program by reading 50 books or 500 minutes. Participants in our first online program earned one point for every book read or for every 10 minutes of reading time. This summer’s total was 124,505.5 points. The top readers received an engraved maple book clock and will be recognized on November 30, at the Jackson County Public Library Night during the Seymour vs. Martinsville boys’ varsity basketball game.
